Poor quality sports uniforms when compared to other YMCAs. I watched my child's basketball team play other YMCA teams and it was very clear that the quality was bad, and the style choice was poor. I am not joining my child in any of their sports teams ever again as they don't care how their team is represented because they told me that they won't be changing their uniforms to match other YMCAs even after I shared a picture showing how the uniform looked on the kids. Nice and friendly staff! The facility includes a swimming pool, a great place to learn how to swim. The pool is heated so even though it's an outside pool once you are in the water (during the San Diego winter) all is well. They offer different classes for everyone from spin, turbo-kick, to Zumba. Personal training is also offered. The usual slew of exercise equipment is available but just come early if you want to use the treadmill since it's always busy. This place is perfect for parents with young children because day care is offered free of charge. So put it plainly there are no excuses. The "I didn't have a sitter" won't fly :) read more

Updating with an additional star because I've rededicated myself to this facility and am very impressed with the new staff since my last review. I will say though, the concept of Activ Trax is great. It's a mini personalized fitness accountability tracker program that is offered to members to help them choose proper machines and structured workouts for them based on an initial fitness test. Sounds great right? Well the system has annoying glitches, so I ditched my plan. Probably for the best since I enjoy spontaneity. Some of my fave staff members are TJ (who seriously has probably memorized 85% of the members' names) Daniel (cool yoga instructor)...Nanette (cool yoga instructor w/lots of positive energy)...Gladys (chill yet kick butt instructor)...and some others. They're ALL great, really! Kudos to the Y for picking great people. They're educated, charismatic and great representations. This place is great for the entire family. I hope they expand a bit more because they stay packed! read more

When I came in for a tour. All the equipment That is available made me excited to start up my workout routine again This is the 2nd time I try coming in for a workout and besides all the machines being used in every piece of equipment being used ,there are kids using up most of the machines and equipment ,leaving it unavailable for an adult to use Besides it being unsafe for kids to be on some of the machines and it also makes it pretty hard to be patient about a child taking up a machine I understand that a gets busy after work hours but it is very unfair to keep trying to come and work out and not have things available because a child is given the permission to use it read more

I love how clean this gym is. However. The people at the front need to step up there customer service. The last few times I went. It was terrible. Yeah I get it your in the front, but if you don't want to work then leave. Another reason why I gave 2 stars is because the pricing is ridiculous!!! Especially it being a family gym. It is obnoxious. I'm debating about canceling my membership, simply because my rates went up and nothing has changed. Why would you not install sanitary wipes in a facility generating revenue? The locker rooms are filthy, the rug looks disgusting, and it just doesn't smell clean. To clean the machines, you have to use sweat damped rags that everyone uses? That's pretty disgusting. The building is two stories. Lots of open gym equipment. I love that each treadmill has its own television. New facility means newer equipment. The instructor TJ is awesome! Free childcare while working out A+. Others gyms charge while this gym, gives you two hours of worry free gym time. All group classes are included in your fees. I really like that the families can all workout together, even in yoga or cardio classes. My daughters loved that idea. In door basketball courts. Free hiking club. The pool is nice and clean. The only downside is the parking lot. No open spaces at 6pm. If the parking lot situation is made bigger than I would give 5 stars. read more

I've been interested in this facility since it first opened a few years ago but never made the time to go in and check the place out. My wife and I finally visited the Border View YMCA for the first time yesterday afternoon. We toured the facility and found it to be more than adequate for our needs. They have a great pool, nice fitness equipment, and offer a number of free group classes that should help to motivate us to get off the couch and move a bit. They offer a family plan for $58.00 per month which allows two adults and all children under the age of 26 in the same household to use the facilities. That is a pretty good deal, but the best part is that as a military retiree they waive the enrollment fee ($50.00) and reduce the monthly fee by 20%. They also offer the same deal to active duty members. Additionally, there is a current promotion this month where they gave me a $50.00 voucher to use toward one of their numerous classes or for a personal trainer. I don't think you're going to get all that anywhere else for only $46.40 per month. And they offer financial assistance and free child care to those who need it, so there is no reason not to join if you're interested. I have an orientation appointment this morning and I'm super excited to finally get going on a fitness program. Thanks Border View YMCA! read more

This review is solely based on the youth sports and youth-sports staff. (I've never used their fitness facilities). My boys have been participating in the organized recreational basketball leagues for 3-4 years. There are usually 5-6 teams per age group. That means diversity in game play and practice. The practice and game schedules are completely reasonable (doable) for working parents and especially with the boys homework routine. Talk to the sports director Coach Ray. He's available to answer questions and will hook your kids to their favorite sport. At Borderview, there are options. There's importance to the physical and social benefits that come along with team sports, your kid will thank you for it. read more

I've been meaning to review this YMCA for a while now. I recently moved to IB and had a few friends that had memberships at the Y and so I thought I'd give it a shot, I canceled my membership with 24 and went over to see what it was about. When I walked in I was very happy to feel the cleanliness of the environment. I was greeted by the front desk girls and waited my turn to be helped.. When I was given the run Down on what to expect the girl insured me that the group exercise classes were great and that I would love the turbo kickboxing classes... The very next day I show up for the class and was informed the the turbo instructor was no longer teaching At the Y... I was very disappointed but tried to find something else that would do... I tried the Zumba and it was not just bad it was Awful I tried the cycle it was very low impact and left a lot to be desired the only classes that were worth my time and probably the only reason I didn't turn and run was because of Dans body pump, hard core and his boot camp.. This man is talented and this location is very lucky to have this guy making a difference. He has passion and knows his stuff! So I gave it some time and me and my friends finally ask what the malfunction is and found out that the director quit and there trying to find a replacement. She continued to tell me that no one wants to work in the South Bay location... Really? I gave it two months no improvements and when I called to cancel my membership the girl never asked why or gave me any details what I should expect about the fact that if I ever want to join the YMCA else where I would have to pay the 75$ initiation fee again:-D all the way around thumbs down! I'm am so disappointed in this, I feel i am doing a great service to those who do there research before giving there money to a business who just doesn't care for you or your work out! P.S. Great gym with great staff. Especially the child watch. I go four or five times a week and the child watch is always great with my boy. My only complaint is that child watch is non existent on Sundays. They should keep it open at least until 1pm like it is on Saturdays. read more

I normally don't go to the YMCA, I'm more a 24hr Fitness guy. I do have to say this location is nice, the staff here are great they're welcoming and friendly. The facility is clean, the free weights section is kind of small, but it is manageable. They're are lots cardio machines if that is something your into. Overall this place has been good to me and I have no complaints. read more

The staff in the child watch are the BEST! There is one girl in particular (don't know her name) that is super sweet,she is very good with my 1 yr old who seems to have separation anxiety all of a sudden... a phase I am sure! I love this YMCA! Childwatch is INCREDIBLE! The employees know my children by their first names and are always interacting and playing with them when I come to pick them up. Clean gym, great classes. VERY EXPENSIVE! I pay $30 a month just to use the gym and thats with the income based price.

Court is good but is usually never free other than early morning or close to closing time. Pool is alright but feels like they use to much chlorine. Upstairs gym is alright. Not the greatest equipment but get the job done. Customer service is sometimes hit or miss. Sometimes employees will ignore people till they literally call up to them in their face. And usually on their phones. They never put out a consistent schedule for the basketball court. Might say it is free that day on paper but when you go in little kids are practicing. Looks like a good place for kids but for adults its not worth the hastle for the price. read more

The staff is great with the kids. They're all very young and patient. Definitely recommend this YMCA if you need a camp for school vacations. I do wish they hadn't removed the half day camp though, now the only offer a full day camp which is a little more pricey and I don't need to have my son there from 6:00am to 6:00pm. I've only been there twice because they have longer weekend hours than my local YMCA. Both times they have been out of disposable wipes to clean your machine. Instead they have a couple of spray bottles with dirty rags for people to use. I didn't even want to touch the rags with my bare hands. So unsanitary. Their machines are also covered in marks and dust. Drinking fountain was dirty. So there's no regular cleaning going on here. I never saw any trainers walking around... They must be downstairs in the lobby. I gave two stars because of the longer hours and a very kind staffer downstairs who filled my water bottle in the break room as I was leaving and alerted them to the fountain downstairs which didn't have enough water pressure to do anything but bubble over the mouth piece. The only reason I come here is because i live about 2 blocks away. I also go to LA fitness and compared to it and other gyms, this fitness facility is tiny. But, i know this is mostly because it's geared towards children programs so it's bigger on child care and children's sports and activities. I just wish the fitness area was a bit bigger and there was a lot more equipment and space between the equipment. It is always crowded and I have to often wait a while for a treadmill. Positive aspects are that the equipment they have is so new. Treadmills have cable tv to watch while running/walking and they also have pre-set workouts that challenge you whether you wanna do fat burning or conditioning, etc. i also love coming here for the group exercise classes. My biggest complaint would probably be that Zumba on tues/thurs at 8 pm is such a popular class and yet the instructor could do a lot better. I very rarely break a sweat with her class. The movements lack creativity and a lot of times the members look bored and uninterested. She plays the same songs class after class. I love the Saturday instructor so much more. I keep attending because its the only time i can make it to a Zumba class and i love Zumba. Just really wish the instructor would make class a little more upbeat and challenging. There is absolutely nothing to complain about with this facility. The staff is excellent and very helpful if you have any questions. The prices are reasonable and they even offer discounts based on your income when it comes to your monthly fee if you decide to become a member. My child has take 4 "seasons" of swim lessons with border view and after the 3rd "season" she knew how to swim (at age 4) She had a blast and as diffucult as she was to the instructors (she has ADHD) they were always very patient and stern with her. It was awesome and even wore her out a little bit. While I was pregnant with my 2nd child, I attended the zumba class and the aqua aerobics class and it helped me to regulate my weight and while performing light exercises that were safe for mommy and baby. Nice clean facility, nice friendly staff, heated pool, plenty of workout equipment, lots of activities. Overall a great place. read more

Adult Sports programs are awesome. Played in the basketball league and was an awesome experience. Don't have to worry about weekly ref fees since they're included in the registration fees. Unlike other leagues. I think Volleyball just started, may join that in the future. Front desk staff are friendly and always helpful.
