I visited first thing, before even checking in, as I was famished from the long drive. I had a salad and soup, deliciously fresh and flavorful, and their fresh lemonade while I sat and enjoyed the quiet, the rustic scenery, free WiFi and artwork on white walls. Yes, and every day after I would lunch and buy two desserts: one for later and one for the following morning before I made it up the hill to Fishers' Dining Room for breakfast. And these are no ordinary desserts ~ Tunisian orange cake, for instance. The staff are so very helpful and attentive. And so many locals and regulars just being themselves ... there was a whale sighted on my last day and all had a go at the binocs by the windows. A true treasure in this otherwise rather barren stretch north from Trinity. And they started this summer with long hours Thu - Sat til 7:30 with a different type of cuisine every evening.

We arrived around 6 pm without a reso (oops!) they had a big bus tour coming in so looked like we were going to be out of luck but they offered take out, which was fair and kind! As we were looking at the menu they played with things a bit and were able to fit us in their cafe portion before a 730 reso. We soon realized that the co owner was taking care of us in this family run business. She was great at answering all of our questions and being SO attentive to our little girl. We started with the hummus and smoked salmon and it was incredible! Amazing flavor and all made from Scratch. For our mains we all shared the tuna poke and the braised brissket. Both dishes were some of the best we've had, ever but definitely the best meal of our time in Newfoundland. We also tried the Newfoundland martini made with NF tea and it was so good (and pretty too!) and all very fair priced too! The restaurant also has an inn which looked very nice as well. The whole place was clean, with a bright and modern feel while being very connected to the seaside feel of the area. 10 out of 10 would recommend!

We placed our order at the cashier (there is no table service) and we waited and waited and waited. After 15 minutes one of us went to the cashier and asked. We were told our sandwiches would be ready in 5 minutes. After waiting 30 minutes another one of us went to the cashier and asked. We were told that our order would be ready in 5 more minutes. After 45 minutes we asked again. We were rudely told that "I am only the person who takes orders. "I have no control of how food is prepared and delivered to the tables." We waited 1 hour 15 minutes. We were the only customers left in the restaurant. We asked again and was told the same thing: "I have no control of how food is prepared and delivered to the tables." She checked and was told it was still an open order even though there were no other orders. Finally between 80 minutes and 1.5 hours after we ordered, our three very simple sandwiches were brought to us. Non of the three orders required any cooking at all. They were only sandwiches. IF YOU WANT TO SPEND AN ENTIRE AFTERNOON SITTING WAITING FOR THREE SIMPLE SANDWICHES, THIS PLACE IS FINE FOR YOU.

The menu options were quite vast, and there were some special options available off the menu as well. I had the "Treasure Chest" to start, which was cod bites, calamari, scallops, and shrimp served in a bed of fries. This was probably the best part of the meal, as the portions were big and the seafood was relatively fresh. I also had a French Onion soup, which was unfortunately awful. Shredded melted cheese was simply not it. I shared mussels with my parents, which were some of the smallest I've ever seen. It was quite plain, it said olive oil and garlic was supposed to be included, but I barely saw it. Finally there was a crab au gratin on special, which I decided to order with onion rings on the side. Similar to the mussels, the crab was small and there was barely any meat on it. Service was also quite rushed. My family felt like they were trying to chase us out even though it wasn't completely full. Can't say this was a good experience overall sadly.

Here are my thoughts: The Gallery/Gift Shop has some nice local crafts and really nice local art to put on the wall. However, through a combination of "our walls are already full" and "this or that doesn't speak to me", I left with only a Newfoundland coin for my efforts. My advice is that if you're here, you should definitely take a look. Now the Restaurant, which is one of the few in Town. - We sat inside by the windows with a nice view. Outdoor seating was available, but on an evening like this, there were no takers. - The Dining room was attractive, comfortable, and felt like I was in my home town. - Our wait staff were friendly, welcoming, and very interactive about where we were from, local perspectives, and what things we could do in the area. - Our meal was very good. Over 3 glasses of shared white wine, I had the Chowder and a Caesar Salad, while Gayle chose the North Atlantic Scallops. When in Newfoundland, Seafood is what's for dinner.

The closest experience I can think of after spending a really nice weekend in Trinity was maybe Mendocino, but without the tourist hordes. The Twine Loft Restaurant was very charming, with stellar down home service, and delicious food options that the kitchen was happy to tweak. We both enjoyed the rustic modern dining room, the romantic ambiance, and the view of the water through the window. Our only regret here was that the weekend we were here was cold and foggy, so there was no real sit on the deck at sunset (or sunrise) option. Dinner was extra special at a fixed price of $65 plus beverages. Gayle chose the Moroccan Lamb Shank with Yogurt Mint Sauce (served with Lemon Herb Israeli Pearl Couscous and Roasted Vegetables), while I went for the Atlantic Salmon with Mango & Pickled Onion Salsa (served with lemon roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables). Everyone in Bonavista should be proud of this establishment, especially considering the magnificent…read morerestoration that has transformed this historic building. Kudos to the owner for the dedication, vision, and investment required to bring it back to life. My understanding is that the structure was originally built between 1840 and 1850 as a mercantile building on the harbor. After years of decline and near abandonment, it was relocated to its present site around 2001. The current owner has done an impressive job restoring the building while preserving its historic exterior character. Having worked in the construction industry for more than 40 years, I tend to notice the details. I looked carefully and could not find any aspect of the renovation that appeared neglected. From the foundation, roofing, and flooring to the HVAC, electrical systems, and interior finishes, the workmanship is first-class. It is a beautiful building and a tremendous asset to the community. Projects like this are all too rare in many parts of North America, where the usual solution is to tear down the old and build something new. There are notable exceptions--places like Ybor City in Tampa come to mind--but restorations of this quality are uncommon. Preserving a building's history while giving it new life adds character that simply cannot be replicated. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate during either of our visits, so we were unable to enjoy the outdoor patio areas. Newfoundland apparently wanted to remind us who is really in charge. Fortunately, the interior was every bit as inviting. The space is warm, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed, and we enjoyed relaxing at one of the high-top tables. We were told there is additional seating upstairs, although we never made it up there. I noticed one review pointing out that this is technically not a traditional microbrewery. That is perfectly fine with us. We have similar establishments in Florida where space limitations make on-site brewing impractical, so they showcase excellent beers from regional breweries instead. The concept works well here. The beer selection includes offerings from Bonavista Brewing, Landwash Brewery, Broomstick Brewing, Banished Brewing, Port Rexton Brewing, and Dildo Brewing. That sounds like a pretty respectable brewery lineup to me. The full bar is well stocked, the service was excellent during both visits, and the food was outstanding. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we returned for a second meal during our stay. We were fortunate enough to meet the head chef and came away convinced that the kitchen is in very capable hands. A true professional who clearly takes pride in his craft. The best restaurant and taproom in Bonavista? Absolutely, without hesitation. Visiting the area? Stop looking--you've found your place. Enjoy!
