When my husband and I started seeing Dr Zhang, we were in our early 40s. We had done 3 failed IVFs and our western doctors told us we had a 0% chance of having our own child, and that our only chance was to do a donor egg. Six months after we began seeing Dr Zhang, we got pregnant naturally. Dr Zhang also helped to encourage labor, so our son was born at the birth center (no epidural, no pitocin -- it was an all-natural birth). I went to Dr Zhang after trying to conceive for 12 months. I learned that I had high fsh and this may have been causing the trouble with conceiving. I started seeing Dr Zhang and my reproductive endocrinologist (fertility doc) at the same time, and thank goodness, we conceived one month after starting treatments with Dr Zhang (had not yet received any treatment from the RE)! He helped us to avoid IVF or any other fertility procedures. I continued seeing him throughout the first trimester to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and several times after that for threatened miscarriages. I liked his personality. After a few visits we had a nice tempo of conversation. And frankly, I wouldn't care if he was terrible to me - we wouldn't have our beautiful daughter without him! I have Crohn's Disease, migraines, and PCOS. When I first started seeing Dr. Zhang several years ago, I was ill and in pain almost all the time, and had been for years - even while taking meds, following the SCD diet (which by the way, also helped my Crohns), regularly doing yoga, and generally living what any doctor (eastern or western) would consider a healthy lifestyle. I have been to other acupuncturists, but the first time I saw Dr. Zhang, I knew he was in a different league. He looked at my tongue and felt my pulses and asked me questions about my symptoms that were spot on, that no other doctor had ever asked me before. After the first treatment, my ever-present pain had subsided, and it stayed gone for several hours. After a few more treatments, even my most entrenched symptoms (bleeding, etc.) started to subside, and I started to get some energy back. I saw him frequently (every week to every couple weeks) in the beginning. It was expensive, but worth it - after every treatment, I felt more alive. After a few months, I didn't need to see him as often. These days, I rarely have problems. I have been completely off of medicine for my Crohns for 2 years. Even my colonoscopies are 95% clear (the inflammation used to be pervasive); my doctor is shocked at my success. I'm also off the daily migraine medicine that a neurologist had prescribed. I go see Dr. Zhang once a month to keep my health on track. If for some reason (often stress and overwork), I start to have pain or migraines, I go see him a couple times within a couple weeks, and I'm fixed up again. I know I'm making this sound like a miracle -- but frankly, it is. I'll say a couple other things: Dr. Zhang is extremely responsive to email. If you need a next-day appointment, you pretty much always get it. I live an hour and a half away, and have a very busy work schedule, but he has tons of availability and always makes it work. Other reviewers have commented that he is brusque, but this has not been my experience. He listens and answers my questions (if concisely). Compared to the many western doctors I have seen for my chronic conditions, he is the most effective medical practitioner I have ever been to. And compared to other acupuncturists -- well, there is no comparison. He is a master of the practice. read more

I have been doing acupuncture for a few years now and it really makes a difference. New to Boston area so found Dr. Zhang. In general he is ok, but so commercial. Barely spend 20 minutes with needles. Appointments feel rushed as he has a flow of patients that does not stop. In general treatments work as it is acupuncture, but it is way too expensive to spend less then 5 minutes with a doctor that does not even do muscle tests. read more

I suffer from unexplained infertility and after 3 unsuccessful IUI, 1 chemical pregnancy, and 1 failed embryo transfer I was desperate to try something new. Suspecting I might have a thin lining issue which my doctor doesn't seem to be concerned about, I decided to try acupuncture on top of taking omega3 and fertilecm supplements. I am not sure if it's the acupuncture or the combination of all 3 that had worked but my lining was at it's thickest after starting this regimen and I conceived on the very next transfer that I had. I am very grateful to have found Dr. Zhang as I was at a very low point right when I started seeing him especially after the repeated IUI/IVF failures. This is my first direct experience with acupuncture, but I am hoping that it is ultimately positive. Dr. Zhang smiles all the time, but he is brusque, and when I asked him what his diagnosis was, he initially told me that it was no use telling me, because I didn't know anything about traditional Chinese medicine. That was annoying, because a doctor is supposed to explain things to you and increase your knowledge. He did agree to tell me on my second visit, when I was able to inflect my question with a few key TCM terms. Our sessions are on the short side, slightly under half an hour each. Since I have no previous experience with acupuncture, and also because Dr. Zhang was recommended by my usual (Western-style) doctor, I am choosing to go with the flow and hope for the best. I wish he would improve his bedside manner, but I guess I'll just chalk it up to "atmosphere". If this all works out, I will add at least another star. read more

After numerous failed cycles of IVF I decided to give acupuncture a try and came upon Dr Zhang. I found him to be very kind, caring and considerate and I have always found him to be focused on my needs. I am now happy to say that I am pregnant, and am convinced that the acupuncture sessions have played a part in this. If you are looking for results, then Dr. Zhang is the acupuncturist for you. After trying for about a year to get pregnant, I went to see Dr. Zhang and after one month of treatment - bam! Pregnant. He is a nice person too and not super chatty so if you're looking for a more serene environment and chit-chat might not be for you. I would recommend seeing Dr. Zhang for infertility issues. Dr. Zhang is awful as a doctor. He lacks communication skills and charges a lot of money. When I asked him on my last visit what the plan is for me and how I was doing he said "I was doing fine" and offered nothing else. When I asked him about the herbal medicine he wanted me to drink daily, he barley could tell me what the ingredients were and he told me to read the label - the problem is that he gave me an open reused bottle and filled the bottle with the herbs, so they were not in the original package. He has zero bedside manner. I've been to other accupunturists and he is the worst. I'm very disappointed that my MGH physicians recommended him and I plan on letting them know. read more

Have been seeing Dr. Zhang with my daughter for the treatment of Tourette's. After receiving no help from pediatric neurologist ( they offered meds) I decided to try acupuncture. As soon as the needles were placed her nonstop head twitching, facial grimacing and wrist rolling disappeared. I could not believe my eyes. She began treatments at age 7 and now 10 we visit the doctor for maintenance appointments when I start to see a tic. Acupuncture was a life saver for my daughter. I started going to Dr. Zhang to get acupuncture for my allergies (I had been on a daily allergy medicine for 5 years which totally dried me out - my hair, my skin - and it was becoming less and less effective in preventing my sinus headaches). Within the first 5 or 6 appointments I was able to stop taking my medicine completely and now it's been 3 years and I've never had to take anything again. I still see Dr. Zhang for an appt. every 2 or 3 weeks because I've found the acupuncture to be so incredibly good for stress and total body relaxation which I know I need. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Zhang's for over a year now and couldn't be happier with the results. I went to see him last summer for assistance with fertility and have been going routinely ever since. I was also seeing the MGH fertility center at the same time. After 3 months of unsuccessful IUI's, I developed a cyst on my ovary. My husband and I took a month off of treatment to allow the cyst to go down and I couldn't have been more disappointed (and now worried about the cyst!) With that said, that month I increased my visits from once to twice a week with Dr Zhang to shrink the cyst - conception was now on the back burner. Wouldn't you know that not only did my cyst go away, but I got pregnant that month! The doctors were shocked because the cyst could technically preclude pregnancy - it was truly a miracle which I credit in large part Dr Zhang. I now have a beautiful 3-month old baby boy. If you're a skeptic, don't bother going to see him because you won't see any tangible results - only over time will you see results if you stick with it. I didn't know what to expect when I started either, but I saw his success stories coming in and out of the office (many pregnant ladies!) If you can swing it financially, stick with it. Also check because many insurance companies with cover or subsidize acupuncture. And about his personality, you just have to give it time. . . he is very kind and funny and takes pride in his work. . . don't take your initial impression of him too seriously or personally. He is great at what he does and is the best in the area - I have done my research. His prices are also very fair and comparable for the area. Good luck! read more
