We've relied on them for the last 5 years and they keep getting better. They've got: Expert arborists who love trees passionately, organic treatments that are hard on pests and easy on everyone else, and the trucks and back-office systems to deliver it to your yard. For 5 years we've had BTP spray in Spring for Winter Moths--the "inchworms" that ate my Apple blossoms in April and savage Maples, Lindens, and Elms in May. Calling earlier got us sprayed earlier, when worms were smaller and easier to kill organically. Pre-paying in January at a discount also gets you earlier on the list. Do it. New trucks and diligent crews--often led by a top boss or arborist. In 2018, BTP came early to spray just my Apples in April (blossoms are vulnerable when it is too early to spray the other trees) and today came back to spray the Maples and Elm. This "custom" service--and having apples for the first time in years--is what inspired me to write it all out in a review. Better still, they also offer fall spray of Cedar oil that organically camouflages trees to make the egg-laying Winter Moth swarm not lay eggs in the first place. Thanks to Fall 2017 spraying, in 2018, most leaves emerged without the telltale "first bites", and then organic spraying did the rest. I might try and do repellant-only it worked so well. NOTE: another reviewer said, in 2012, as if it were a bad thing, "They didn't spray for Winter Moths until Spring". Actually, spraying at budding time is the only way to do organic toxins: Moth inchworms have to EAT the toxin, and the eggs evolved to hatch & eat as a bud starts opening-- that's a nerve-wracking phase, but exactly right. Starting in 2017, the Cedar REPELLANT is offered for November to disguise a tree and keep the mother moths from laying their eggs. There is nothing to be done between when eggs are laid (Thanksgiving) and when the buds have opened (Spring). In between the egg is dug-in and dormant. Timing is everything. read more

This was a few years ago - maybe 10 - in Somerville. A fairly large Norway Maple tight against a neighbor's house was hanging over an unusually attractive oak that my wife had favored, and we had managed for a while to clear branches with ropes and pole saw to give "head room" for the oak to grow into, but now we needed the maple taken down. A climber from Boston Tree came, bringing his mother who was visiting from her home in Australia; she and my wife sat on the back deck having tea while they watched this expert, his helper, and me get this tree down safely. One of the memorable times, so social, such expertise on their part, such fun working together. The little oak is a giant now, easily visible from the parking lot behind the Armory; when it was young it blazed with scarlet in the fall; one expert told us it was a "valuable tree". It might be one of Somerville's finest today. I am calling again to see about four awful maples (3 Norway) on a lot in Maynard. I'll find out if another adventure is in store. read more

I've never felt inclined to write a review on any company prior to my experience with Boston Tree Preservation, but it would be unjust of me to not share my experience in an attempt to try and warn others to choose a different route for their backyard needs. I initially reached out to this company because my neighbor had a tree sprayed for the pesky worms that made a mess on their patio this summer. I too, had been dealing with this issue for quite some time and was not aware of this (seemingly) easy solution. However, from my initial phone call to the service execution, I could not be any more disappointed with my experience with this company. For starters, the technician was late, had poor communication skills, and rushed me through the process while dismissing my concerns. They also pulled their truck onto my property, making a mess of my lawn. I was previously ensured that their hose was long enough to reach the back, without disrupting my garden. All in all, the damage that was done and the lack of concern, for the price tag, does not leave a good taste in my mouth. A quick google search gave me multiple other companies that I will be contacting and vetting next season, knowing what I know now. read more

I was very happy with the tree pruning they did for me but I also contracted with them to spray for Winter Moth and paid for the service in December but they blew me off and only showed up in the spring after I'd called and thus they were late and treated the tree after the worms had had a field day with my trees. read more

They have been maintaining everyone's trees on my block for years. Including spraying our hemlock for Woolly Adelgid... regularly. They recommended pruning away two of its 3 trunks. We were worried but the tree is now straight and stronger, two stories tall. I can't believe I bought it as a potted Xmas tree with a city of Somerville discount ten years back! I love how Boston Tree Preservation calls themselves Preservation rather than just a 'Tree Company.' They explain that they are deliberately emphasizing caring for the trees. When a tree needs to be cut they will do it, but until then they will keep them thriving. read more

We have used this company for several years and find them incredibly responsive and wise and helpful. During the storm last year, they responded quickly to trim a tree that was on our wires. They have kept woolly adelgids in control on our hemlocks and pruned trees and shrubs and dealt with the winter moth problem, successfully saving a lovely weeping cherry as well as numerous maples. Friendly, smart, careful, reliable. Timing for winter moth and wooly adelgids has been great. read more

These folks are great! Reasonably priced, very knowledgeable. I had one tree removed and ten trees pruned and the yard looks fantastic. They also showed up right when they said they would. They're trucks are powered by biodiesel, too. read more

An excellent group of professionals! Joe and his crew have been maintaining my lovely arbivorite hedge for years as well as beautifully pruning some other trees on occasion, so he was my first call this morning after last nights storm dropped a giant tree on my roof. He came right over to give an estimate and this afternoon they meticulously took apart the tree piece by piece, using one guy on a bucket truck suspended over my roof to support the weight, while they cut the tree apart from the top of the roof down. The wind was blowing like crazy but this team of 5 men worked in tandem to insure that my house didn't suffer any additional broken windows or further damage to the siding. I would call them tree engineers for the professional way they went about this. When they were done with the tree, they cleaned up the yard and patched a few holes in the grass. I would highly recommend Boston Tree Preservation to anyone. read more
