Fruits, veggies, pastas, foie gras, rigglits, duck confit, meats, cheeses, confectioneries, canned goods, breads, wines, spirits, cookies, butter, creams, and the list goes on and on! Name an item, and there were at least 20 variations or varieties of that item! Brought back a suitcase of stuff! Was shopping for over 4 hours! Had coffee and lunch with wine while shopping. The experience was reminiscent of shopping at the huge Macy's department store on 5th Avenue in New York City, thanks to the dining options available while shopping. The North American section made me giggle. I grabbed some fancy French mustards and cookies to bring home for friends and family. Unsure if any locals actually come here or if it's ALL tourists. The layout was extremely confusing to me. Now, I'm sure there are some simply fantastic elements to this store that evaded me due to the sea of people inside. But, I think Erewhon had more going for it. Artistic, clean, bountiful displays of produce. More organization, better lighting, etc. I felt like I could actually see the products at Erewhon, whereas here I was fighting with a lot of noise.

I wanted nothing to do with the jars of foie gras or champagne, but I used one of the trunks to store craft supplies. 25+ years later and it still stores craft supplies. So, of course on my last trip back to Paris I had to finally stop back in as an adult who can appreciate things that little kid me would have just said "oh, neat" about. Spoiler alert: I still don't want anything to do with foie gras or champagne. This visit coincided with a belated birthday adventure after having a mini meltdown about getting old and missing home. Fauchon is the quintessential picture of Parisian chic. The store is elegantly simple, with clean lines and bold color. The cases have a huge variety of pastries and indulgent treats. And what they have to offer is so beautiful and so meticulous that you start to wonder how the tart or éclair that caught your eye isn't unaffordable. Yes, it's pricy for pastries in France when you consider Carrefour sells éclairs for like one Euro (and that cheap ass éclair is somehow better than 99% of éclairs in the US). When you compare it to the "gourmet" pastry scene in the US the prices aren't insane though. Would I make this my regular stop for pastries? No, but for special occasions or if you're visiting and want a beautiful experience this is absolutely worth the small indulgence. We selected an éclair with some bold graphics printed on it, two different macarons, a lemon tart (tarte aux citron), a chocolate moussey cakey piece of art, a slice of pâté en croûte, and some hot teas. Because of the artistic elements it was a less traditional texture for the éclair but the flavor was delicate and pleasant. The macarons were perfect, which I'm sure they always will be, and it's probably one of the reasons they do well as an edible souvenir. P.S. Americans, do NOT call them macaroons, those are completely different. The tart was the right amount of sour and sweet with great texture. I opted out of the chocolate and the pâté but included them in the photos so you can be jealous. The commentary on those can be summarized with, "OMG amazing." Oh, Paris, tu me manques. Je dois retourner tout de suite!

We had foie gras (their specialty) very delicious, escargot, smoked salmon salad, french onion soup, and plenty of baguette. Helpful servers speak English well, they were quite patient and friendly. We arrived 30 minutes before the kitchen closed, with several groups in front of us, but they kept us apprised of the situation and prepared a place for us outside as soon as it was available. We placed our order and the food arrived quickly; in the meantime several more diners came by and were seated for wine and desserts. It was fun for people-watching at such a late hour as many groups and couples were still out and about. While waiting to be seated, we had a chance to peruse the deli area with many varied terrines and foie gras, pickles, smoked salmon, caviar and wines. I wish I was more knowledgeable about their products, but I was amazed that my French from high school and college (40 years ago!) held up as well as it did!

The bar is full of Corsican wines, excellent sausage (some of the best), cheese. Pick your bottle from the shelf and pay a small corkage fee. Corsican whites are generally quite mineral, fresh and slightly salty (due to the island influence). They are a perfect match with sausage because the acid cuts through the fat nicely. They also have a range of wines by the glass but getting a bottle is far more social. The reds are juicy and spiced so again perfect with sausage. It's a non-debatable topic: you must get the mixed cheese and charcuterie plate. Its generous and so, so good. As I said above, it was some of the best sausage I had the whole time I was in France. And the whole shop smells of it too so it's impossible not to be hungry. Unless you are vegetarian- then maybe stick with the cheese.

By no means cheap, but worth EVERY penny. No menu, just take a table (if you're lucky) and you'll be asked if you want meat or cheese or mixed. You'll get a decent sized platter with bread and fig chutney for £8-10 per person, and you can order wine to go with it. They speak great English and also sell a small range of deli items, from chutneys to chocolates, bread and more. And all the cheese/meat you taste!
