I tried to find three things: shelter, a place to draw ideas in my sketchbook and a glorious last dessert item before I'd catch my plane back home to Berlin. I had a pleasant "Tisane fruitée et gourmande" 6-7,50€ (served in a tea kettle, that's 4-6 servings), and a Framboisier. "Framboisier: génoise amande, crème à la vanille de Madagascar, framboises, amandes caramélisées" Never having had a Framboisier, I had to google a couple if ingredients first. Roughly translated, it's a tiny raspberry cake made of a almond biscuit base, Madagascan vanilla cream, raspberries, caramelized almonds. It's about 10cm in diameter and costs 8,50€. Reading the description made me wonder if that price might be worth it. The second my fork cut through the cake, I thought "what is this sorcery?", the second my tongue tasted the creation, I thought "this is sorcery!" Whatever you read what the "génoise" is supposed to be, this one comes from a different level of heaven. I ate this cake as slow as I could, without making the very friendly waiters think there was something wrong with me or the cake. It was THAT good. Instead of drawing ideas into my sketchbook, I marveled about the gentle deliciousness of this cake. For 2 hours. The Framboisier was a worthy last dessert I savored before getting said plane. His first eponymous bakery is quite a sight to behold with its giant facade, glistening white interior and beautiful sweet confections displayed like untouchable jewels. In fact, it's the pristine perfection of everything here and the cold, calculated interior that gave me a chill when I first entered. I was determined, however, to bring something home for dessert for guests but when I saw how fragile and expensive the cakes were (cakes for 4-6 are about 30E) I opted for a Kougelhopf instead. Served with some vanilla ice cream, the sugar-and-almond-coated brioche was a light and lovely dessert, but nothing I'd run back to the bakery to experience again. Maybe it's all about Sebastien's other eye-pooping desserts, but with so many amazing bakeries on the block (e.g. Delmontel) I'm more inclined to go back to where the price/quality ratio is guaranteed.

The flavors on offer are written on the window, sweet on one side, and savory on the other. The selection is almost overwhelming, with each flavor combination looking better than the last. We came right at opening and there was no line, but people steadily came and went as we ate. I ordered a red fruit tart with rhubarb, and the spinach and smoked salmon quiche. Both slices were generous and the quiche was microwaved to heat it up. I found out that they do not have utensils, instead you pick up the slices and eat with your hands. The quiche was good but not stunning. Plenty of toppings and a generous portion. The pastry crust was, of course, better than the frozen crusts I use back home. A comforting meal but showstopper it was not. The fruit tart on the other hand, made me fall in love with fruits in new ways. The fruits and rhubarb were tart and flavorful, cooked with just enough sugar to soften them and make them jammy. This is the flavor fruit punch wishes it were! The crust held up to the weight of the fruits on top, and tasted very rich. The edges were caramelized with sugar, making this tart delicious from start to finish. If we didn't have major eating plans for the rest of the day, I may have gone back to purchase an additional slice (or two!). I definitely anticipate myself taking some time to try (and fail) to recreate this tart myself, what a gorgeous bite.
