Stop! If you are in the area do not miss this place if you like french pastries. It is easy to miss just off the highway but the bakery products are fantastic. We actually came on our way back to Halifax as the waitress, Rachel from Juniper restaurant in Chéticamp, told us about it. I had the best cinnamon roll I have had in my life with a flaky pastry and just the right combination of sugar and cinnamon. My wife had a delightful quiche and the coffee was good as well. It is take out only, although there are a couple of chairs and tables outside by the front. Seriously if you are anywhere near here and like bakery products this is a must stop! read more

A real and authentic French bakery. A huge selection of breads, sweets and buns. You won't find too many amazing bakeries in Nova Scotia, but this is definitely one of them and a must visit if you're on the south shore. While they do offer coffee, it's just drip style and nothing fancy. We stop here for sweet buns first and then head to The Barn for our coffee. If you're not fussy on coffee, this place will do. read more

All of their pastries and loaves are crafted using top quality ingredients, like organic flours and whole grains. They have some delightful specialty loaves featuring apricots or olives, and also dish out some staples like french baguettes and wholewheat . If you're a bread connoisseur, then the Boulangerie la Vendeenne is bound to get you salivating. If you see the line up at the Farmer's Market, count yourself in as one of the herd. This Bread IS as good as it gets! To top it all off, It get to us fresh here every thursday In Riverport , NS @ The Rose Bay general store. or at the Lunenburg farm market. Ive eaten Bread absolutely everywhere in the world , and I feel proud that our Local convenience store sells a great variety of their loaves. This is REAL Deal bread that puts anything else baked around these necks of the woods to shame. Try their Olive loaf, and sourdough.. Its Incredibly tasty and lasts a good few days on the counter before it dries out. Since we only get them once a week here,we freeze them fresh in a plastic bag, and thaw the day you want to use them at room temp. Absolutely amazing!! read more

I don't know how many times I walked right by Boulangerie La Vendeenne at the Seaport farmer's market, and ignored this bakery. Could it be the difficult name to pronounce? Or Could it be that Julien's is a few stands away? Either way, I'm glad I joined the long lineup today! I had a massive triangular-shaped pastry, filled with chocolate and custard ($3), and an "all-inclusive" croissant that had almond custard on top, chocolate and peach chunks inside ($3.50)! My oh my. Where have you been all my life? Personally I like their croissant better than Julien's. It's not as sweet and they don't have the sugary glaze that Julien's brushes on. By the time I got there most of their bread was gone. I'll be sure to try their bread next time. read more

*While the bakery is located in Mahone Bay, they sell their breads and pastries at the Halifax Farmer's Market every Saturday!** Those of us who stand in line for this market vendor every Saturday morning know what's up. We know that their brioche is fluffy and sweet, we know that their baguettes are crispy, with just the right amount of chewiness, and we know that their pastries are all filled with wonderful goodies. We also know that their croissants are superb, whether you prefer chocolate or otherwise. One of my favorite weekly traditions is buying a croissant here, a litre of apple cider upstairs, then taking them out to the patio and alternating bites of pastry and chugs of cider. Boulangerie La Vendéenne literally means "Bakery from the Vendée" (which is a location in the Pays-de-la-Loire region of France). As the story goes, the owner moved here from France and despaired of finding the perfect loaf of bread and decided to start making his own. The rest, as they say, is history. Boulangerie La Vendéenne has had terrific success in integrating themselves into various pieces of the whole food and organic market. Of course, you can find them at the Halifax Farmer's Market every Saturday, but maybe you didn't know the other places you can find their wares: Planet Organic, Home Grown Organic Foods, local jo's, Pete's Frootique and many other locations. Their bread is that perfect combination of crusty outside and soft inside. My kids often forego the breads and go straight to the palmiers and croissants - and who can blame them? I've heard a rumour that Boulangerie La Vendéenne may soon be closing up shop and heading for warmer shores. If that's the case, you'll want to do all you can to stock up before they are, sadly, no more. read more

I've never been to the actual bakery in Mahone Bay - all the bread that I've bought from La Vendeenne so far was from Pete's in downtown Halifax. They sell good bread but, and I almost feel sorry to say so given the five-star average so far, I always feel that it looks and smells better than it tastes. I've done a few side-by-side comparisons with the same bread from Julien's (for instance comparing the two bakeries' sourdough baguettes) and I always find that I prefer the bread from Julien's. To my taste the breads from La Vendeenne don't have enough crust, and the dough is a bit too bland. read more

Products that are always delivered fresh daily and yes, made with love. We just wanted to add a comment to one of the reviews to help clear up a rumour. Boulangerie la Vendéenne will not be closing it's doors, even though, yes, there may be a possibility of extended stays where the sun always shines. We use this bakery as the quality supplied by this business is consistently to our standards, and we do not compromise. Easy for me to pronounce? Nope. Great hours? Na ah? Super awesome bread? Yup. Love their square whole wheat bread. Probably my favourite overall bread. And their croissants? Lovely. I've also tried their mutligrain, olive and apricot breads, flan....the list goes on. I pick-up treats from this bakery at the Historic Farmers' Market, the Sea Port Market, and the Humani-T Cafe on Agricola St. All their breads and pasteries are excellent, I've eaten a lot of them. However, last week when I got a florentine cookie from the Historic Farmers' Market and it was soggy, like it was baked the day before. Subtract a star. read more
