The first Bourke Street Bakery opened in 2004 and over the past seven years it's become a Sydney institution, with outlets now in Surry Hills, Potts Point, Alexandria and Marrickville. Luckily for the Marrickville locals, this spot isn't as ridiculously packed as the Surry Hills location, but it still draws a steady crowd most days of the week.
Serving up breakfast, lunch and coffee, the first thing you'll notice is how amazingly delicious everything looks. Well, either that or the drool that's filling your mouth. To the right you'll find racks full of fresh bread, including their specialty sourdoughs (mmm, hazelnut and raisin). Straight ahead you'll see shelves full of sweet and savoury treats. If you're feeding a group (or you're just feeling greedy), you can buy whole cakes like the pear and raspberry butter, flourless chocolate or carrot. Or buy individual treats in the form of tarts, muffins and pastries. (Okay, I'm drooling already.) You've probably heard about the famous pork and fennel sausage rolls... But if you've never tried one, do it. Now! Otherwise choose from a great selection of warm pies, sandwiches and thin-crust slices of pizza.
I pop in pretty much every weekend and I've never had a bad coffee yet. Waiting for takeaway always makes for great people-watching as kids get distracted by colouring-in duties and end up with chocolate smeared all over their faces... It's seriously that good. read more
