Great vibe, quick service, simply delicious food. Popped in before 10am for a quick bite before my flight. Having spent a lot of time in Brooklyn I wanted to see what they had to offer. I was really impressed with the menu and operation. They had all sorts of New York classics on deck from pastrami sandwiches to lox bagels all with their own little twist. Very creative spot with awesome coffee (like most places in Melbourne). I ordered the Chicken and Waffles which literally came out in under 5 minutes while the place was relatively busy. Waffles were delicious, Chicken deboned thighs nice a crispy with a chipotle butter and fresh maple syrup. Fresh squeezed OJ was also refreshing. Next time I'd def get a pastrami or lox bagel and a coffee to go and eat as I walked through the alley ways of Melbourne. read more

A taste of Jewish 'Murica, right in Melbourne...sweet decor to boot. Came here a little bit too early on Sunday to order sandwiches ('DOH! I really wanted to try the Reuben,) but their breakfast menu seemed appetizing nonetheless. Come at 11am onwards for sandwiches. I ordered the Pastrami Hash and my gf ordered the Lox Latkes. I was a big fan of the pastrami hash and also enjoyed her lox latkes, though she wasn't as big of a fan since she's not really into heavy/rich food. Let me remind you, these meals are HEAVY...so be prepared. The flat white I ordered was pretty good too, but the standout was the Peanut Butter Hot Chocolatet served with a side of Reese's. There was just the right amount of waiting time as we looked through the menu and our waiter provided a very thorough service. The Benjamin is a great treat! What an amazing place!.. This is one of my most favourite cafes in Melbourne CBD.. Located on Spring St end of the city (crn Flinders St) this little sister cafe of the famously known Hardware Society. I have been here on numerous occasions, and each time LOVED IT. Interior is amazing, with a great big communal table, and small seating around, also outside tables. Amazing food, this place really get's it right when you hear the word BRUNCH. Shakshuka's are the must try on the menu. Halloumi & Salmon ones have been my top favourites. Full of flavour, and so so Tasty. Coffee to match, nice and smooth. Why did it take me so long to discover this magical piece of New York heaven in the heart of Melbourne's CBD? The coffee is fabulous - you also get a Hershey's chocolate with every coffee order. Makes me nostalgic for Brooklyn. The brunch - OMG! You can choose between an awesome range of bagels and quirkier options like pork hash with corn bread, poached eggs and broccoli which was my discovery of the day. Such a great brunch. Note - you will need a nap afterwards. The lunch menu looks scrumptious and I will be back to gorge on it - especially as it's just around the corner from work. As the name would suggest, Bowery to Williamsburg specialises in New York bagels... And boy do they do it well! With a wide range of sweet and savoury bagels to choose from, there is something for everyone! At $10 per serve, the bagel and schmear options are popular with endless combinations of different flavoured bagels and an even greater variety of schmears. My favourite is the sour cherry bagel with lemon vanilla and I was told this is a very popular combination so if you're having any difficulties choosing, go with this! Breakfast menu includes eggs and bagel options, as well as conventional brekkie options such as porridge and muesli. Fried eggs and bagel are good too if you're feeling savoury instead of sweet for brekkie. Savoury sandwiches are available (with option to add sides, think pickles and mac & cheese) for lunch with winning flavours such as meatballs and pastrami. There are heaps of other flavours which I have yet to try so will probably post another review when that happens (won't be long, rest assured!) They do good coffee here too which is always a plus for breakfast venues. Consistently good coffee and food. Very LES NY feel to the place, making it feel like you're having a mini break while in the middle of the CBD Their coffees come with a little Hershey's kisses, even their takeaways, so you can get a sweet little kick start to your day. Their speciality is bagels, where you pick your bagel type and shmear combination. My favourite, chocolate bagel with peanut butter shmear, seems to have vanished but their sour cherry with lemon vanilla shmear seems to making up for it. As an aside, the owners other venue was recently damaged by fire so they've opened up Bowery on weekends to ensure they've got enough work to keep their staff. read more

Wow... Just wow. Having been to new York every year for the past 10 years just for a quick holiday, I'd like to think I'm an expert when it comes to pastrami sandwiches and Mac n cheese. That being said this place definitely is one of top places to eat in Melbourne. I had the pastrami melt with a side of Mac n cheese along with pretzels and a pickle. The flavors of the sandwich were fantastic. My only negative would be that the meat didn't melt quite in your mouth. The way it does when you take bite out of a pastrami sandwich from Katz. The meat here was a little on the tougher side but overall the flavor made up for it. As for the Mac'n'cheese... Now that was perfection. Sharp cheese concoction had the right amount of macaroni vs cheese and a nice crunch on the top layer. They gave a good amount as well and just the right amount not to over power the sandwich. Well thought out dish. I can't forget to mention the best cappuccino I've had in a while. I got a strong capp and the milk looked like melted ice cream just as it should and the espresso wasn't burnt. Brilliant. I'd come back just for the coffee alone. Another added bonus is that its in another alleyway with a great Williamsburg feel to it. Delicious! I was looking for something to eat on a day in Melbourne and found this little gem so I went with my Dad for lunch after a long morning conference. I got the Ruben sandwich on rye which was deliciously filling, juicy and full of flavor. For a second there I thought I was in North America! Instant gratification! The young waitress was adorable, cute and eager to please full of smiles she told me it was great and not just because she worked there. All of a sudden I was distracted by the one and only CRONUT. I've now been here several times and it never disappoints. Lunch times have an amazing array of New York style sandwiches from pastrami on rye and smoked salmon bagels, to lox and meatballs and schmaltz. I love the pickle that comes with the sandwich and if you're really hungry you can get the combo with sides such as mac and cheese and pretzels. Another nice touch is the Hershey's that come with the meal or coffee. Their breakfast menu is also delicious with plenty of variety. I went back for sour cherry bagel with lemon curd schmear and best root and rye bagel with dill schmear which were packaged up for me by the very friendly staff so that I could enjoy them on Saturday morning and they were simply delicious. On my never ending quest to find the best Reuben/Pastrami on Rye, I stumbled upon Bowery To Williamsburg through a colleague who noticed it in one of Melbourne's hidden lane ways. Can't believe I never found this earlier. They are totally on point here which is immediately noticeable by the line out the door and 15 minute minimum wait. An eclectic New York Jewish Deli style menu, they have catered for the sweet and savory that common New Yorkers crave. Massive bagels with cream cheese and lox, marsh mellow brownies, pecan pie and chicken schmaltz sandwiches. Oy Vey! Trendy hipster staff with a fun and friendly attitude greet you at the door, whilst heavy set chefs stand side by side behind the glass kitchen to prepare the never ending feasts that fly out the door. Ordering the Reuben, I was blown away by the quality and quantity of pastrami, heavily smoked and juicy (the way it should be). A tasty pickle and a sprinkling of pretzels garnish this sandwich to top it off. The rye is lightly toasted and the Russian dressing meets the right proportions to cap off one satisfying meal. We also ordered a side of mac and cheese served in a tumbler jar, crispy on the top and gooey throughout. Great touch! The decor is reminiscent of a New York deli with all the trimmings one would expect, fused with trendy Melbourne cafe style furniture and coffee to die for. Cool vibe and nice dishes but the brisket was a big let down. Coffee is good and plenty of great brunch choices to choose from but the brooklyn vibe set high expectations on the brisket front, especially after being told it was smoked. The brisket still had its webbing between the muscle fibres, meaning it hadnt been cooked long enough for this connective tissue to break down. The lack of pink smoke ring and or any smoke flavour suggests an oven cook, not smoker. Addressing these flaws would ne worth a extra star read more

I was in Melbourne recently for the battle-station and deathstar convention and as you can imagine you get some pretty uptight dudes at these things. I just had to get out and sample some of Melbourne's finest. New York, being the place I would move to if I won the galactic lottery, I could hardly go past a place called Bowery to Williamsburg. I was really hoping for the chicken and waffles to recapture my Williamsburg Sweet Chick experience but it's wasn't to be, it was off the menu. I ended up having the waffles, bacon and maple syrup with whipped cinnamon and it was excellent! I can certainly recommend Bowery to Williamsburg for fans of American cuisine. To top it all off you get a Reeses cup with your coffee... best garnish ever. The only downside is you can't jump on the L train to Union Square. read more

Hidden in a sub subterranean basement off a little known laneway off Flinders Street/Lane is this hidden gem. Great service amazing bagels and waffles to die for. The southern fired chicken waffles with maple syrup, would have Frank Underwood from House of Cards making this his daily breakfast special. Oozing with flavor, southern fried chicken has a new home. Coffee was good but as I like extra hot, few places get the order right, so one star is deducted on an otherwise perfect venue. read more

Breakfast and brunch gem tucked in an alley! Being our first time in Melbourne, the city has converted many of the laneways (aka alleys) in to mini streets with bars and restaurants. We found BW in the laneway and almost right past it as the sign is not very clear. They have a couple of outdoor benches while indoor had a large sharing table. The decor was very cool as they had pics and pieces hanging from the wall. Our server was a happy cheerful guy. We order eggs benny with smoked salmon and the waffle with Chantilly cream and berries. Eggs benny came out perfectly with their latkas while I think the winner was the waffle. Soft and freshly made while being drizzled in syrup, berries and cream - yum! The place seemed pretty popular as lots of people popped in to get their coffee. They also have some funky milkshakes and bagels which we have to come back to try. read more

I love an outfit that knows exactly what it is and does it extremely well. Bowery to Williamsburg definitely fits that category. They are a New York style bagel cafe and they nail it. Great styling, great food and amazing value. The coffee (from Padre) was perfect. I ordered two long blacks and a bagel and walked out with change from $15. That can be a bit of a rarity this end of town. The bagel + schmear combinations seem endless, it was really hard to choose. What it means is I am now hell-bent on trying them all, especially given that a bagel and a coffee is less than $10. On my first occasion I went with sour cherry and lemon curd to get a bit adventurous. My dining counterpart went plain and plain and was every bit as happy as I was. The lunch options are also extremely tempting. Think big, fat ruben sandwiches with a pickle and pretzels. Or mountains of great looking salads to break up the carb overload. Bowery to Williamsburg is a prime example of why I often cringe... I love a good rubin and decided that Melbourne has fantastic food and this restaurant had good reviews, I would give it a whirl. However, what I got was the saddest rubin EVER! The bread was pumpernickel where as a Rubin is on rye (which is not the same thing!). But this is not the reason for sadness... The reason for sadness is that the bread was not grilled, there was not even an attempt to toast the bread. This is NOT a rubin. This is a sad cold corned beef sandwich. Do not represent as a NY deli if you cannot get the basics right. I gave two stars because my tea was good and the service was attentive. read more

True to its name, a hop skip and a jump down Oliver's lane just off of Flinders, Bowery' is as close as you'll get to Williamsburg, NY without jumping on a plane. Wielding a striking resemblance to the hip back-alley cafes of the home of hipster-chic, the bowery to Williamsburg offers great bagels, one of the best reubens to be had in australia, and most importantly mac and cheese. They don't offer Mac and Cheese as a standalone dish, but a pro tip is that three sides will set you back a measly 15 dollars, and provide a serving ample for two or a hungry one. read more

Oh my gosh, the love in my heart for this place... First things first, this place is a proper brunch joint. Plan your visit accordingly (it's busiest 11am-Noon). Now the food: I went with two dining mates and we loaded up our order! Drinks: cold drip (overly hipster presentation, but my friend said it was good coffee, so I won't discourage it); flat white (top 3 I've had in Melbourne); Cuban Bloody Mary (hubs thought it was tasty, very heavy on the horseradish, probably could use a bit more worchestershire sauce, overall worth it) Mains: -the smargasboard of fish and bagel toppings (a veritable feast all on its own with beautifully smoked and cured fish, very creative flavored cream cheese, and fresh toppings for your (on the small side) bagel) -the Lechon Asada sandwich (gorgeous slow cooked pulled pork with zucchini and other delectables on a (sometimes soggy) bun--a big winner in my book) -the day's special of cornmeal waffle topped with seafood and sausage gumbo and fried eggs (this was to die for, i have nothing but love for their chef) Sides: bacon (Hello, America!!!! Streaky, cured, maybe smoked? bacony goodness from the land of the free); mac and cheese/pretzels/pickle (yes); latkes (serving is on the small side which surprised us because all the other portions were HUGE, and the latkes just were's anything to write home about--this was the one thing I wouldn't order again) This place is absolutely awesome. The idea behind the place hooked me in - always up for some great American style eats, and it ticks the 'cool Melbourne' box of being down a graffiti filled city lane-way, but unfortunately I wanted to like it more than I actually did. Everything was close to being great but was just that bit off - the peanut butter hot chocolate was bereft of heat by the time it got to me and I had to scull in back before it turned into an ice chocolate in the cool Melbourne morning air. I'm not a guy that sends things back to the kitchen (just complain about it here apparently), but I came close there. Likewise the Reuben sandwich was mostly tasty (and huge) but after one mouthful of inedible stringy fat I had to open it up and dissect the meat a little to make it more palatable. The cornbread side was again nice, but crumbly at the touch, and to be honest not very close to the true American stuff. My partner was onto more of a winner with her selections so I think maybe I just got out-menu'd here and would choose differently if I had my time again. As someone who loves visiting the big apple though, I certainly appreciate a little dose of it here in Melb-town, and nothing in my above quibbles would stop me from giving it a second go. read more

Today I enjoyed a Turkey Club and this was a delicious sandwich. The standout was the bacon though, since its crunchy smokey strips were bulging out the sides. The whole thing was bursting in fact, with the turkey quite delicious really. The lettuce, tomato, mayo and cheese finished it off nicely. The sourdough was lightly toasted and remained warm through the process of devouring it. My Turkey Club was washed down with an orange juice. Bowery was really humming today, the waitress serving was so bubbly and friendly, and the whole crew was moving with a positive vibe. Loved my lunchtime visit today, thanks. Absolutely amazing food. The flavors are wonderful. I had a fried chicken and waffles, with a maple chipotle sauce and greens.... every bite that touches your tastes bud is amazing. The previous day I had the wage burger, which was probably the most amazing burger I've ever had. Again the combination of flavors, textures, grilled Swiss chard on the burger was delightful. This dandy cafe is a step down into a basement off a cobble stone hidden alleyway. You can't see it from the main street, you got to follow the sound of diners. We visited around breakfast time, hoping to satisfy an eggs craving. The vibe here is most definitely American inspired, even the music was NYC reminiscent. The breakfast menu wasn't traditional, they had their own twist in every dish. Although I was able to order plain fried eggs on toast. In addition we went for the fried brioche, waffles and chocolate brownie. I enjoyed the brioche sans the bacon part. I still can't roll with that combination yet. I was appreciative they were able to fry me up some eggs despite it not being technically on the menu just because I requested it. Nothing really appealed to us from the savory menu, I was tempted to the try their infamous Reuben but too early for that. That'll be a next time choice if we return. The service was bright, perky and prompt. We got private seats straight away despite it being completely busy. This is a little nugget of New York tucked away in the back streets of Melbourne centre. The atmosphere could have come straight out of the lower east side of Manhattan and the only thing missing (thankfully) was the New York attitude. In contrast to the snappy cranky attitude you often get in the real Bowery, the staff here were courteous and on the spot with whatever you need. Expect some queues during peak times but the wait was not very long for us on a Sunday morning and certainly worth it. The menu was packed full of interesting options. Some familiar brunch stables and some unique combinations like the special of Mushroom bread pudding, Okra gumbo, shrimps, smoked sausage and poached eggs (which we had and loved!). Pretty good but not wow good. I came here almost purely for the reuben sandwich. I love reuben's. Corned beef, sauerkraut, russian dressing, rye bread. I mean honestly what's not to love? I saw a multitude of people having fantastic looking brunches, and everyone seemed to be ordering the peanut butter coffee, but I had just had my daily drop so didn't need any further caffeine. So I chose to go with the Reuben. Anyone who see's my ratings knows that price point comes into play for most of these things and that is the main place where B to W dropped a star for me. I thought 15 bucks was just a few too much for this sandwich. It was delicious but could have used a bit more salt as I thought the sauerkraut was a bit too overpowering for me. On weekday lunches the sandwiches are 13 dollars with a side coming to 17. I think that is probably the better price point as I really did think that 15 dollars for what came was a bit dear. read more

Tucked away American restaurant/cafe close to the Paris end of Collin's Street. Great value for money the portions are generous, well priced and tasty. The Reuben sandwich is a favourite of mine here. Also try the Shakshoushka eggs which were a great bruch option. Coffee Is good as well, so is the dessert. Have been wanting to visit for a while and was not let down! Bagels have to be my favourite breakfast choice and seeing the fried egg bagels I needed to get that! I had the eggplant fried egg bagel which came with an everything bagel, egg, breaded eggplant, melted cheese and tomato. Delicious and messy! My partner had the pulled pork hash. The bagel board was fine, but I wouldn't order it again, it's a lot of individual parts that are all OK on their own but don't add up to a reuben or bagel sandwich which you can order here. This place is amazing. I went her with my American girlfriend as she was a bit homesick. Both of us were very impressed with the food and service. We got there just before the lunch rush and shared a table outside. I ordered the Ruben sandwich with pretzels, pickle and Mac and cheese for 16.50. I struggled to finish the meal. I would dare to say it was the best sandwich I have ever eaten. I strongly recommend the Ruben. My girlfriend had a bagel and loved it. They cater for the biggest meat eater to vegetarians.
