This is a small mom and pop shop in El Paso, super close to the border. The neighborhood is very quiet and seems like this is a staple within the community. They have a variety of pasties and sweets you can choose from. We had a tres leche cake and a pineapple upside cake ( not pictured). During the week, I went there for a rosca de Reyes cake which the lady on the phone told me was in stock in the morning. When I got in El Paso, there has always been a debate on which bakery is better: Gussie's or Bowie. Both are very popular bakeries within the different sides of El Paso and it was something that I was very eager to visit. The first bakery that I visited was Gussie. It was a much nicer place and vibes, but when it comes to Bowie, this place stood out. The pastries here are much better, more options, and the price is better as well. My favorite is their cannoli and I would say that it is on par with the famous canoli place in Boston. Parking is a bit hard to find as you have to use street parking and it is usually full, but it is manageable. read more

I think this bakery is so well known and so established in El Paso that it doesn't even need my review... HERE IT IS ANYWAYS! I got out of work in the morning and was freezing I was craving something sweet and hot (or maybe just an excuse to get some comfy food), my coworkers told me about this bakery I know is well known in El Paso but I've never tried it before. It was a line outside at 8am once inside the place smelled delicious and though first my plan was to get only one piece of bread and tamales once I was there I couldn't stop ordering stuff; I had 2 empanadas (apple and pineapple) a chocolate donut, a concha and half dozen of tamales. As you can see the donut didn't survive the road, I was putting it in my mouth as I was driving home , the bread so soft and warm perfect! I'm not a huge fan of conchas I know they're like a Mexican bakery favorite but I just don't see the hype, well let me tell you THIS concha made me believe all my dreams can become true, there's something about the way they make their dough here that the final result is bread so soft and not too "panudo" as my mom would say meaning that it's too thick and dry. Tamales tamales I love tamales but honestly my moms are the best in the world....or so I thought this tamales are so fluffy so greasy (in the perfect way) and the filling is delicious usually when they sell tamales that's where they make their mistake but not Bowie, these tamales are so good I had to call my mom with tears in my face telling her that her tamales are no longer the best in the world. Tamales were fantastic! I'm not a tamale expert, but we were in El Paso for 24 hours. I had to give them a go. They were NOT bland, and the masa had a texture to them that made them feel "homemade" and not commercially produced. If you're in town visiting and stay in hotel row or in the middle of nowhere north of everything like I was, this tiny hole in the wall is pretty out of the way regardless of what Google Maps tells you. I wasn't the driver but I felt like we maneuvered through a lot of different streets to get there. Street parking only but that wasn't an issue. We parked very close to the entrance. There was a guy outside who only spoke Spanish and I didn't catch what he said so I could tell you why he was sitting there with a bunch of stuff... but he seemed very in earnest and nice. :) There was a mom and her daughters there in front of us so we only waited for maybe a few minutes on a week day afternoon. I t's a little intimidating to go in there if your Spanish isn't fluent. The lady who helped us did speak English but you could tell Spanish was her go-to. I asked her for half a dozen tamales (I don't know if there are different kinds or not because I only saw one type of bag in the frig behind the display) and a slice of the tres leches cake for my BF. It's pretty cheap. All that came to $12.85. Tamales are very good. BF said his abuelita makes the best but he was pretty impressed by these and said he'd go back (he's a native to EP) and get more. He also enjoyed the cake. He destroyed it even with lactose intolerance. Wish I'd taken pics but we were hell bent on getting that cake in the frig once we left and like I mentioned we stayed nowhere near Bowie. If I end up going back for business to the airport, I'm definitely going to hit this place up again! read more

This place is amazing! Go nowhere else! It is worth the drive, even from out of town! They have every delicatessen imaginable. I had driven and called bakeries (the day before) for a small cake I needed for a small surprise birthday party. NO ONE HAD ANY (all bakeries said they needed at least 2days advanced notice). I called Bowie Bakery (on the day of), and lo&behold, they had had exactly what I needed. I am from El Paso, but had been gone for over 20yrs and just out of desperation I remembered this bakery but didn't think they were still open?? It is a bit off the beaten path. My go-to place has always been Gussies but was willing to try something new. Hands down amazing. Pan dulce now has a new standard to live up to - the Bowie Standard. For a lifetime, I have snubbed all pan dulce that didn't come from my favorite panaderia Nuevo Leon in Chicago. Now that I've had Bowie, there is a new favorite.
