Beautiful historical architecture, gardens, and landmarks marked our wanderings on an early Saturday morning. Bowling Green Park is one of the oldest public park's in New York City! It was established in 1733 and is located in New York City's Financial district! I was staying at the DoubleTree Hilton downtown in FiDi and it was only a few blocks away from my hotel! This park was originally designed for parade groups and evolved into a central gathering place. It was once featured as a popular place for European Lawn Games in the colonial era! Bowling Green is now one of the park's located in the Financial District that is surrounded by skyscrapers! It's also really close to the charging bull sculpture, battery park, and wall street! A lot of reviews mention the history of the park being the oldest NYC park established in 1773, etc. so I'll just comment on the layout and overall experience. This plaza is located between Broadway and Broadway, that's right--it's located where this famous avenue splits into two at the very base of Manhattan, directly north of the American Museum of the American Indian, also just north of Battery Park. At the north tip of the park the Charging Bull stands poised to rush, a bronze sculpture commonly associated with Wall Street (also nearby). Usually a couple lines of tourists form at all hours seeking a photo at the front and rear of this anatomically correct animal. The immediate grounds inside the fenced portion of the park is flanked by tall trees that provide a good amount of shade in warmer months. There are benches encircling the fountain where you can sit and enjoy your lunch and take in the fountain. Overall the park is well maintained. There are usually a handful of street vendors (halal food, hot dogs) parked nearby, though if you walk further east toward away from the water toward more office buildings, a wider variety of street food is usually available during weekday lunch hours. Easy to reach via public transit since Bowling Green subway station (4/5) and Whitehall Street (R/W) trains are on the same block. Public buses also stop nearby. Would not recommend driving as street parking can be difficult and garages expensive. read more

Bowling Green is NYC's oldest public park, and it's actually much older than the city - it once served as the council ground for Native American tribes (the National Museum of the American Indian is just across the street). It might be small, but it's a great place to take a breather from the crazy of the surrounding area (you don't feel like you're just paces from the lines of people waiting to get a photo with the charging bull statue!). There are a bunch of benches, a fountain, and some beautiful flowers. I stopped by last weekend for a few minutes of calm with my coffee and book. It was a treat. read more

But as I read up on it and realized how historical it is, I now have a greater appreciation for it. It is the oldest public park in New York City going back to 1733. The statue was pulled down after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Bowling Green Park has served many purposes over the past couple centuries. It was renovated in the 70's after years of neglect. Today it has a large fountain in the center and park benches around it to sit on. It is the oldest public park in all of Manhattan and the fence around it is the original from the 18th century. Prior to being a park, it was a cattle market in the 17th century and the location of the city's first public well. Yeah, the history of this area goes back. And yes, before the Colonies were here, this is rumored to have been the spot where Dutch Governor Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan for $24 worth of merchandise in 1626. Bowling Green is location right in front of the National Museum of the American Indian and right behind of the famous Wall Street Charging Bull. The park is centrally located in the Financial District. Many tourists are in the area on a daily basis. Surrounding bowling Green are many street vendors and it is close to a subway station. Super easy and accessible park. I came here in April 2022, so the flowers were not fully bloomed yet and the trees were looking a bit bare. I bet you in the summer time the park is beautiful. A lot of history is in and around this grassy area. Bowling Green is the oldest park in NYC. It's about as old as the city. Food carts and musicians are often around it. There's also many nearby attractions to check out. Bowling Green was literally the first park in the city. It looks like it's been here a long time. There's a few details on the city's website. It was a site that Native Americans used for their council grounds. The Dutch came in and took the land over. In 1626 it was the site where Manhattan was sold to Peter Minuit. The land was mostly vacant. In 1686 it was designated a public area. This casually researched information is your history lesson. I enjoy these older parks like Bowling Green. Not to be confused with BOLO Green (which is where the cops hang out) and YOLO Green (which you can only visit one time ever in your life). Cute little park which is so tiny that you might miss it if you take more than three steps across it. It's right in the middle of the financial downtown which is an area that doesn't have a lot of parking, and you have to go quite a long way to get to a really serious park as you know. There's little green space here, and it's a shame that it can't be a bit bigger. It's kept up quite immaculately but don't try to make a scene in this park because the cops around here are not messing around. read more

PHOTO LINE?: My second time coming here. Chaotic this time everyone crowding around in no organized fashion. Last time I came there was a line and people took turns taking pictures for each other so things moved fast and you got an unobstructed photo. They need to bring back this structure! I decided not to fight through the crowd and didn't take another photo figuring the one I got last time was sufficient enough. You can take a pic in front of the bull by the face or by the butt with its balls. OTHER: Police car with two cops nearby, but they weren't monitoring anything. There was a guy climbing on top of the bull, and they just stood there behind the crowd chatting without saying anything. Guess if he falls he can't sue? Not sure. OVERALL: used to be higher stars for me, but now just A OK 3 stars due to the chaotic photo op compared to the organized line they had the first time I came. read more

CHARGING BULL That's my favorite part of the park. It's an iconic statue of Wall Street. If you want a solo picture with the bull, you should be there before 9am on the weekdays. Otherwise, he's a very busy bull and draws thousands of tourists a day. Things tourists do to the bull: -Climb on top and straddle the neck. I'm not sure how they do this because the bull is pretty slick and does not have a lot of good foot holds. -Grab his balls (yes, he has big ones) -Take pictures with his rear The rest of the park is also nice and a good place to eat your lunch when it's nice outside. There are tons of benches and places to sit and people watch. read more

Not really a park, as it is small, but more like a large garden with one huge big ass fountain smack in the middle of it. Terrific spot to sit and reflect, or to watch all the annoying tourists take funny pictures with the Wall Street Bull. Nicely manicured grounds and pretty well maintained. Just a really nice little park. It's the oldest park in NYC so it has some historic relevance. The surrounding buildings offer up some terrific architecture and statues to view. This is a small park steps away from the famous Charging Bull in FiDi. Out of towners seemed to come to take photos of it and then go on their way. So ironically, I think most visitors here are the locals taking a work break or escaping the summer heat. I'd suggest coming here for a rest after all the walking you've done before. This park is a green escape as it is surrounded by a concrete jungle. Also, it is a good meeting place so you can rest while you wait. read more

Quaint and only a few steps away from Wall Street's famous charging bull, this little teardrop shaped park offers quiet refuge from the tourist trap that ensnares dozens at any given moment. While you can still gawp at the tourists touching a certain mammal's genitalia in the park fully knowing that you once did that, too, the real centerpiece of the Bowling Green is a lovely fountain. There are lots of fountains in NYC, especially the parks, but the one here appears to serve a double purpose,helping to mute the excited voices of tourists just a few steps away. Lower Manhattan is tough to navigate for the uninitiated, so when you come across a park in your travels, do yourself a favor and sit and take a moment. The Bowling Green is also a historical site to see in its own right, brandishing the title of the oldest public park in NYC. And, it has it's hand in some American Revolution shenanigans for you history buffs. During that time there was a statue of ol' King George III, which was toppled by the Sons of Liberty after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. More history per square inch than anywhere in America. That should be the motto of Bowling Green, given it's only about 100 feet long. I used to live 2 blocks from here, and as a history buff, always felt overwhelmed by the place. It has been there since this place was called New Amsterdam, and the fencing surrounding the "park" is still original, the same fenching George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and other great Americans walked around in their day. There also used to be a statue of King George in the center of Bowling Green, approximately where the fountain is now. After a reading of the Declaration of Indepenence, however, angry Patriots tore down that statue and symbolically used the metal to make bullets with which to fight the oppressive British. Take THAT King George, you limey bastard!!! Gives you goosebumps just thinking about it. Bowling Green also contains the famous Bull sculture that has become synonymous with Wall Street over the years (see my profile for a lovely picture I took of said sculture after the blizzard of 2004). But did you know that the sculpture wasnt authorized by the city? Some guy built it in his loft and dropped it off in the middle of the night in front of the NYSE about 20 years ago. True story. It was later moved to Bowling Green where it resides today. And it's a tradition that if you have a job involving the stock market that you have to touch the bull for good luck if you walk past it. I'm not superstitious, but I always do this because I like the tradition, and because it's fun. You can often find tourists surrounding the bull waiting for a photo-op, many of who love to focus in on the bull's rather large balls. Another cool (and FREE) place to go in New York City! I came here because there was a HUGE BULL of COURSE!! You've probably seen tons of picture of it! And get this, even the back is anatomically correct. Snicker. Big balls! they say that you're supposed to rub them for good luck. This is a famous tourist spot, so when we got there there was tons of people waiting to get their picture taken. You kinda have to find your way in to take your picture. Being that I occasionally follow the stock market and my dad is an avid trader, I had to come down to Bowling Green and take a picture with the Raging Bull... and rub his nose... and grab his balls. Nice Little Park with a Mystery to Solve This is a small park - but, really, what park that doesn't rhyme with Pentral Sark in New York isn't? - but it is quite nice.  The metal fence provides a bit of separation from the hustle and bustle nearby, and the benches are quite nice for catching your breath or just relaxing for a while.  Speaking of that metal fence, one may notice that the taller posts appear to have all been cut shorter than they once were.  Hmmm.... I'm here every day since this is the subway station I use to get to and from work. It's a beautiful park and on Tuesdays and Thursdays there is a farmers market. It's also home to my worst nightmare aka Citibike. It's the oldest park in the city and that right there makes it a bit of a tourist trap, especially on nicer days. Luckily, the tourists mostly stay by the bull, rather than gathering around the subway station. I do feel bad for the bull, though. People are always groping the poor guy :( read more

This is a great photo opportunity spot if you're in the financial district of NYC. Bowling Green is supposed to be one of the first parks in NY too. This triangle is where Whitehall meets Broadway at a fork near Beaver Street about a 2 block walk from the NYSE. The closest subway station is Bowling Green on the 4, 5 If you're wanting to take a photo with the Charging Bull there is a make do line up where everybody just takes turns taking pictures. In spring, when the tulips and daffodils are blooming, this place is a peaceful little spot to retreat from the hustle and bustle of Broadway. Cool to see, but ridiculous to get a picture at. We went on one of the slower weekends to visit NYC during the summer (Labor day weekend) and the line was at least 45 minutes long both times I tried. Amazing how many people want a picture on the anal side of the statue too. Definitely worth sitting there watching people take those pictures. Get there super early or super late to not have to wait so long. I ended up buying a professionally done photo from a vendor in Central Park so I had a good one to take home without strangers crowding around the bull whom I didn't know. read more

We came to see the Bull and it's BALLS! I didn't even realize there was a park nearby. I've seen the Bull in a number of movies, so it was on my list of must see things...plus it was a FREE attraction. Anything free is worth seeing, plus acting like a child in sight of balls made the day extra fun. Lots and lots of tourists (including myself), but it got really annoying when people didn't have to common courtesy to wait their turn for pictures. All it takes in one sec people! What made our experience extra special was that there were a pair or NYPD's finest--I guess overseeing the area and making sure tourist don't step out into the street. Anywho, after taking pictures with the bull we were still a bit giddy and asked to take pictures with the two officers (one was very yummy). They asked us where we were from and when we said Hawaii, the cute one had 101 questions which kept us there an extra 20ish minutes. Very friendly guys. Made our day! read more

Lots of people walking pass or actually seating in benches enjoying the sensory...there's a mini water area...go make a wish! ...of course NYC is known for there amazing parks...this is just a small yet peacefully one...there's a few things to do at this area...lot of people come here to eat and sight see... I just pretty much walk pass it every time I run for the ferry... The area is pretty convent transportation wise...theres buses and trains also staten island ferry is close by ...The area is clean.. Visit Bowling Green now, it's in the heart of Wall Street. Charging Bull is a permanent sculpture and Fearless Girl is a temporary installation. Beautiful bronze statues, the bull was designed and cast after the 1987 stock market crash to represent the strength and power of the American people. Fearless Girl was installed on March 8, 2017 for international woman's day. Fearless Girl draws attention to the lack of women in leadership rolls on Wall Street and other large companies. The Fearless Girl plack reads "she makes a difference", and "know the power of women in leadership." Hopefully Fearless Girl will become a permanent sculpture on the Bowling Green in the heart of wall street. read more
