This was an AMAZING venue for a small intimate wedding. Staff person that was there with us was very chill and very cooperative with my best friend who planned his whole wedding. **This review is only about BoxEights event rental. I have no knowledge of their photo studio rental*** Do not book an event here! The owners are unethical, and won't care when they break your contract by not delivering what they promised, and changing the space so that it no longer can fit your event. And you'll have little recourse if they do, because they don't have any assets to go after in small claims court. Plus their kitchen is super crappy & dirty, and definitely not where you want your guests' food to be prepared! Avoid at all costs!!! read more

First of all, when you call this place, make sure they have the date you are interested in. I called and someone told me the date was available and then it wasn't and then it was and in the end it wasn't. This should have been my first red flag. This place is just unprofessional and extremely overpriced. They seem to charge for every single detail and what ever they can get away with. To start the location rental is $3,500 for up to 150 guests standing or 120 guest seated on Saturdays. This is based on a 10 hour Rental Period. You or your vendors "CAN'T" come the night before to decorate or set up. With this price you think you wouldn't have to pay more but nope, they have many more ridiculous charges. For example: parking for your guest, security guards, on site manager (who doesn't manage anything), cleaning, trash hauling, recycling, etc. Really, at this price parking is "NOT" included? A venue without parking, how inconvenient (think twice before booking your event here). The security guards are a must but at $150 each for every 50 guest, after paying so much for the venue seems unfair. The site manager fee has got to be the most ridiculous of all the fees. I asked them what the site manager does and they seemed to want to avoid the question. Their response was "To have someone here to allow the vendors in." And just so you know, that's pretty much it. Don't give the site manager a floor plan or some sort of request because that's not what they are there for. She is only there to allow the vendors in to set up. With so many people living there you would think one of them would be kind enough to open the door but nope, that will cost you $250 aside of the $3,500 you already paid for the venue. I went here for a walk through and I was overwhelmed to see so many people live there. I felt like an intruder rather than a possible client. Also, the neighborhood is not so great. The building looks terrible from the outside. I felt like they didn't want to answer any questions or accommodate in any way. One of the guys even rolled his eyes as I asked questions about the place. It just seemed as though they wanted me to sign a contract and pay already without asking questions. The studio also had pictures which were inappropriate for family events and I was told they brought them down but I'm unaware as for how long. Seriously, if you're a bride you don't want to spend the first half of your wedding day decorating and making sure everything is in place for the reception. That is what you will be getting if you book your reception here. Think twice before booking your next event here. Once you have signed the contract and given a deposit you are pretty much stuck. read more

Oh my, what can I say and where do I start? I went to my friend's son's bday here this last weekend and I can tell you that I feel bad for my friends if they had to pay too dollars for this event (which I'm sure they did) in this crappy hell hole. Overall it's a fun party because of the vendors and the people, but everyone is talking about the 1)unfinished cleaning and preparation from the owner. 2) mound of trash in the front of the entrance that was never picked up 3) coordinator told us that she had to sweep for the owners because they didn't do it 4) coordinator said when vendors started coming in to set up, she smelled really strong weed smell. 5) a/c system was purposely set to the lowest air, people could have gotten heat exhaustion (I'm exaggerating a bit but it was hot in there) 6) wires hanging everywhere 7) apparently our friends were promised a clean organiZed venue , but this was not the case. They got duped .....empty promises. 8) there's an uninvited woman with her kid and a huge dog running around the place as if they have any rights to walk around a private party 9) last but not least, we saw the coordinator and she said she had tripped and fell in one of the leaf painting picture they had and cut her finger opened and had to leave the party to go to urgent care to get stitches. I'd say that coordinator is probably talking to her lawyer for a lawsuit. Could have been a really cool place with lots of potential, I'm assuming that's why my friends picked the place....it's just poor management---that's the owner's fault---and and the owner was apparently there, I heard he never apologized to my friends, and just left----Tsk tsk tsk read more

If you're looking for a nice place to get married. Where they will respect your event. And do what they say they're going to do and hold up their end of the agreement. This is not the place for you. Period I was told that the crap from the corners would be removed for my event and it wasn't. There was no sound at my event. Chad while nice - left for hours day of the event. And Peter (the owner) Don't get me started. Valet that I paid for - that they facilitated- was a hot mess. And didn't start until well after the event started. One star bc it's pretty and one star for Chad's attitude. While he doesn't honor his agreements his weak attempts do account for something and are appreciated. You were warned. read more

Sadly, I didn't use this space. So my review is on customer service alone. Venue-hunting for my wedding has been *extremely* frustrating. I have contacted over 100 event spaces at this point. Much like all but one venue I've heard from so far, BOXeight had a rental feel that exceeded my entire wedding budget. HOWEVER. Thomas responded to my contact immediately. I emailed around midnight, and he replied around 8am in the morning. He responded clearly with all the helpful information I asked for, and directly based on the information I provided in my email to the venue. And, the very first thing he did was congratulate me on my engagement, then he thanked me for taking the time to contact the venue. SO many venues have been cold, unhelpful, unprofessional, or completely unresponsive to my inquiries. At this point, not being able to afford a space is old news & expected. But, getting a prompt & helpful reply, is rare & fantastic. Kudos to Thomas & BOXeight. Thanks for not wasting my time & treating me like a human! read more

I met my second wife here at some celebrity-filled gallery event function a friend invited me to. Then a few years later my daughter had her photos taken here during a photo shoot with this genius photographer named Dirk Mai. Also, there was a dog once. That was really exciting. I would give it 6 out of 5 stars but the option only goes to 5 so I just stuck with 5. It's definitely a 6/5 type of place, though. read more

Used this space as part of a photo shoot that I was the subject of, so I had no involvement whatsoever with booking this space or anything like that. The inside of this place is rad! Very cool venue--and there is an airstream trailer parked inside!! There is a kitchen and a back yard area with a stage as well. Appears to be a great place for lots of different types of events--art shows, photo shoots, parties, etc., although after reading the other reviews, I would certainly be more hesitant to book it. Reasonably quiet although on a busy street. I was there on a Saturday, so parking was not a big deal, but there is only street parking, so I imagine that during the week it is much tougher. Interesting area of town!! The outside of the building looks very rundown and doesn't really match the interior, but the high ceilings and exposed rafters along with the art work make up for it. read more

Came here for a wedding, and it was a cool spot. The neighborhood surrounding it was kind of sketch, but once I was inside I forgot where I was. This place is good for artsy/hipster types, which isn't usually me but was perfect for the wedding couple. The space is great, with an outdoor area with grass and a small stage. The wedding I went to had dinner inside and the bar/ceremony/dancing outside. Personally, I thought most of the artwork wasn't very good. Especially the picture of Marilyn Monroe with a weird saying and some paint smeared around selling for $35,000. Seriously? But I had never been to a wedding like this and thought it was very original and cool. read more

Threw an event here this past Friday and my experience was amazing. Above all, I was impressed with the fact that I did not have to outsource a single thing. We utilized their full-service salon and BOXeight provided us with a team of hair stylists and makeup artists to primp and pamper our guests! Black Banditz and NYX Cosmetics are one of BOXeight's many partners and we were provided with a ton of awesome makeup and hair products for gift bagging. BOXeight provided us with sound equipment via one of their contacts, and we had many artists perform and it sounded amazing! They set up a beautiful gifting suite, nail bar, open 21+ bar, soundstage, projector playing 80s girly movies, etc! They even brought in an awesome psychic to do tarot card readings for the attendees. I give BOXeight an A+ for sure. I can't wait to have my next event here. read more

I rented the space for a music video/photo shoot recently and I must say I was absolutely impressed! Not only was the staff/management helpful, but the space itself was beautiful, clean and very inviting. Between the large white wall and exposed brick wall we were able to do a lot creatively. They helped us configure lighting and props especially whenever we had some issues and allowed us to go over our time without charging us. i'd rate them ZERO for professionalism and customer service, but 3 1/2 stars for the venue itself--if you're looking for something hip and artsy-fartsy. we had our wedding reception here a few weeks back. although the venue is excatly what we wanted for our reception theme, dealing with the people who manage this place is extremely frustrating! we have been passed on from one person to the other, and the turn around time for them to respond to any of your inquiries or setting up a schedule for a walk-through takes forever, and when they do show up they will make you wait for 2 hrs with little notice. they have no sense whatsoever of what professionalism and customer service is all about. it's a total rip off. apart from paying $2400.00 for venue rental upfront, there is also a fee for having someone there during set-up ($250/day)--they tell you their personnel is there to assist with setting up, but he was competely useless. while we were setting up he even had scheduled a potential client to check out the place (to think we paid him for that day!) There is also clean-up fee of $500.00 and another $500 for parking. we also had to pay for valet services. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. read more

So Sad. This place has so much potential! And I guess it depends on which "owner/partner" you get organizing your event. So many different and extreme reviews from this place makes it sound like you have more than one person running the place. Anyway, I attended a First Birthday party for my friend's son here and it was a disappointment. The location sounded amazing and my friends were really excited to have this event at BoxEight. So sad. Here's just a few things I saw as a guest: - The most upsetting was the loose electrical wires hanging from the ceiling about an arm's length high. Some were just tossed around the ceiling beams to get them higher up. At a CHILDREN'S PARTY! All it would take would be one balloon to hit them. :/ - A random extension cord hanging from the ceiling like a snake off a tree, - Metal pipes sticking out of random support beams: they were wrapped in red duct tape as if that would prevent anyone from getting hurt. - We were all hot and sticky. I'm sure that a place like this would have AC. The room got so uncomfortable for all 50 or so of us with kids running around and the sun heating up the room like a green house. - Random Metal Structures stacked up on each other and just pushed towards the walls in a very dangerous position. Looked like they were about to tumble over with one bump from a kid running by. - Very awkward and dirty artwork hanging from the ceiling and off the walls. Rust marks from where the AC unit above dripped water onto the art...so weird. Overall the party was fun cause my friend got some awesome vendors (cartoonists, face painters, amazing balloon artists, craps/blackjack table) and I managed to avoid getting electrocuted or passing out from heat exhaustion. *Plus why the photo of some chick on the swing? What's that selling? smh...If they could throw the wires up around the beams, why couldn't they do it with the swing? It just hung there in the way of some of the chairs. I don't get this thing. It makes not sense to the place at all whatsoever. read more

I was lucky enough to receive back the deposit in full in 2 installments- which I feel grateful to them to have gotten- thanks guys! All the current contacts were really professional when I communicated through phone and email, but I do want to be completely honest and say that timing and follow up could probably use some improvement. Normally I wouldn't mention this if it had just been once, but it still happened a couple of times after that was my initial problem with the venue in the first place. read more

We rented this place for 2 photo shoots, a big crew from Germany was here. The girls in charge where nice and everything was easy and went well. Then we got overcharged on parking spots and other "little" things plus another $150 overcharged on the final bill. We've been trying to get at least the $150 back for 2 1/2 months now, shouldn't be that hard you would think. The girl in charge does not work there anymore...too bad, it was a cool spot but I know I'm not going to rent it again. read more

Excellent space for a chic, modern wedding! We had our wedding there on Oct. 8th and it was fantastic. We liked the exposed brick, the unique open beam ceilings and the loft-like feeling. Tabitha is an amazing coordinator, and made sure every detail was in place. The studio can be changed in many ways, and they were so flexible to change art work on the walls, move furniture out, etc. Guests raved about the cool scene - even though the industrial location is kind of funky. We had a gorgeous wedding in the garden, and a fantastic reception inside - had a total of 91 guests plus staff and the space was just the right size. Relative to similar venues, the price was really good, even when paying to rent the parking lot next door to accommodate valet parking. BoxEight is not full service, so you do have to bring in your own rentals and catering, but that was not a problem. It was also easy to expand the kitchen that is already there to be enough to cook a fantastic sit down dinner for 100 people. read more

Incredible-- I'm diggin' it. was here last week for a music event and, I have to say, didn't understand what was up with all the previous bad reviews. Only when I started chatting with a pretty stranger that I understood the place had just switched partner owners. The new partner owner TOSSED this place upside down like a spring salad & turned it into a lush vibe-house with an elite-feel on the side. She arranged sofas, tables, art, a wine ice-block-- there was even a bouncy house for 'KidAults' outside-- so the entire space felt spacious yet 'salon' enough to hold a stimulating and intimate crowd. Props to BoxEight for providing creatives warm vibes on a chilly winter LA night. I can't wait to see what this place will bring to Downtown in the future :3 read more

Loved this place so happy we picked it for our wedding, it's not your typical wedding venue which is why we got it!! Rough on the outside urban chic on the inside a hidden gem in downtown just perfect for us and we didn't feel thousands of others had gotten married there before. Definetly a great space for an event! I would give it 5 stars if not for the fact that we dealt with 3 different people to assist us in the space of 2 months after Tabitha left (which we were never advised until i called as emails were left unanswered) and we had to be on top of it following up and making sure whoever we were dealing with at the time was on the same page as us, which most times I didnt think they were, it's an easy going place which can be a bonus on some things and not so much on others so be prepared they don't do weddings every weekend like other places. You have to bring pretty much everything in which is nice and can be personalized to your taste requires a bit more work on the couples side but worth all the stress and hassel in the end we had a blast and introduced some of our guests to a part of LA they had no idea of! read more

Im a celebrity fashion stylist and I've been doing photoshoots around Los Angeles for the last 10 years. BoxEight is one of my favorite Studios. you have access to shoot inside and outside. There's So many cool textures from different color photo backdrops to brick walls to flat concrete walls to trees hanging over the glass patio French doors. There was a very artsy feel to the place and my team all felt inspired here. Peter Gurnz is a very talented photographer, artist and inventor. The BoxEight team has really taken the studio to a whole new level and it looks better than ever with the new remodel and makeover. I would absolutely recommend this studio. read more

DO NOT - under any circumstances - plan your wedding here. Like many others on here we were sold a bill of goods for a wedding and they ended up completely failing to deliver on each and every count. What's more, they'll tell you the bad reviews were all the old employee's fault, that they've hired new people, and now its going to be different - it won't. That was what we were told, and within weeks of us signing up, the "new" guy was gone (to Dubai!) and we were told everything they promised us went with him. He was the problem, not them. Sure. Just like the last guy before him was responsible for alllll the other bad reviews. Don't fall for it. They cut off communication from us so hard we have to actually take them to court to get reimbursed money they promised to pay us and that we are owed per the wedding agreement. Totally bonkers. Anyway, please, please think very long and very hard before engaging them for any services whatsoever. Then don't do it. These reviews are not random disgruntled folks, high-maintenance brides and grooms, or picky artists. They are the norm, and par for the course for others I've talked to about using them. I would never let any one I knew do business with them, no matter how attractive the price or how much potential the space has. They are not trustworthy people and do not keep their word, period. Remember why we all refer to YELP. Before we rented this place I had concerns after reading other reviews. My experience runs parrell with others. I have no one to blame for this situation but myself after reading the reviews and still going thru with it. My review is based on my personal experience with renting the space for our wedding. I will rate it in a few different areas and explain why below. To sum it up the space is unique, they were accomadating, but the communication turned into a joke. With tip, the spot for the one day was well over $5000. They did allow us to go in the day before which was supposed to be an additional $1250, at no charge so that was much appreciated. We invited the studio manager and his friends to join in on EVERYTHING we did. Including rehersal dinner, drinks, the wedding dinner, and drinks all night. We wanted to have a good vibe and figured taking care of the guys that run the studio is a good place to start. They were helpful through out the process. Here is the issue: When we left the venue the night we rented it, the plan was for us to be there and tear it down starting at 8 because the studio had work that day at 12. This plan was discussed and implimented with the studio manager. The studio manager said he would be there about 12. We expected the cleaning crew but never was there a mention of the crew being there before us. The cleaning crew ended up coming at 6 and threw out EVERYTHING! The cleaning crew was order there at 6 by the owner but we were never told. Common sense would tell you to save the things from my wife and I's table like her bouquet, my boutinier, my grandfathers cufflinks, my wifes vail, and hankercheif, my brother speech, my father in-law's speech, the list goes on. They threw it all out. After numerous attempts over 2 days to find out where the garbage was I finally found out (no thanks to the manager) and dug through a 6 yard container for 3 hours. I retrieved half of the stuff that was missing. The black diamond cuff links never showed up, and I scrapped the barrel with a shovel. It's probably because they never actually made it in the garbage.. Hint. This situation was 100% aviodable if the studio manager could have been professional enough to tell us the following days schedule as opposed partying with us all night forgetting that he was actually paid to do a job. We would have been sure to take all of the things important to us that night. The owner was cool, but if it were his grandfathers cuff links (missing) and stuff that got thrown out he probably would have been a pain in the ass like me. They should stick to art and photo shoots. Enough useless people"work" there, its more like a hostile. Maybe they are real important in their industry and we are just a group of idiots to fill an open day on there schedule. Save your money Venue: Cool Professionalism: none read more
