My car wouldn't start so a neighbor jump started it for me and recommended I take my car to Boys Under the Hood. I couldn't turn the engine off as it would not restart. The guy behind the counter told me there wasn't any time available until a week from then but if I was able to leave the car they would try to work it in within the next few days. I really needed my car but agreed to leave it and arranged for a friend to pick me up. While waiting to be picked up, I was told that someone there had looked at my car and all I needed was a battery. They then proceeded to install it. I was able to drive away with a new battery within an hour of arriving. I was so happy to be worked in after arriving without an appointment and was treated so kindly. These guys absolutely blew me away! Listen to this amazing story, and why you should definitely use them for your car needs when down in the Oak Island area. My favorite restaurant to go to when I'm down at the beach is Provisions in Southport. I had just finished an amazing dinner of steamed shrimp and onion rings and diet Coke, but decided to refrain from my usual follow-up of Flavas ice cream since I have been eating too much lately. With a smile on my face from that delicious meal, and proud of myself from resisting my waffle cone, I got into my car to head home for some diet ice cream. OMG!! The car would not start. I turned and turned and pumped and pumped and it would never turn over. It's Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. in Southport and I don't know a soul. I'm screwed! Thank God for my AAA membership which deserves a great review another time. They promptly responded, but told me the driver could not be there for another hour. Well, there was nothing I could do other than thank them, be patient and zoom right over to Flavas for a bunny tracks waffle cone! As I was licking my fingers from all the melted ice cream, I suddenly realized that I teach the next day at Elon in the afternoon and somehow I have got to get back to Greensboro tomorrow! Being proactive, I rented an Enterprise Rent-A-Car on-line which I could possibly get in time to make it to class but would literally have to turn around and go back to Oak Island to take care of my car. How in the world am I going to do this? Oi vay!!! Anyway, the tripleA tow guy came and we both agreed it made more sense to drop the car off somewhere with hopes that a mechanic might be able to look at it sometime this week. He recommended Boys under the Hood on Oak Island. I have seen them before but never used them. It was a cute name but I wondered if there was any substance beneath the catchy title. It was getting close to midnight as I dropped my car key and note in their overnight box,and the kind gentleman from Winnabow dropped me off at my house and I had the nerve to have a bowl of diet ice cream on top of everything else before I went to bed Boys under the Hood said they open at 8:00 so I got on my bike at 7:45 and rode over there. Only takes around 5-10 minutes I was somewhat surprised but delighted that as I rode up I noticed my car was no longer in the same place and that Boys under the Hood were busy at work. I inquired about my car and the guy tells me," Oh we already got her going when I sprayed her and she needs a such and such and it's going to cost such and such and the guy has already gone to look for the part and get back to me around 9:30. "Really? They already got it going? He's already looking for the part? It's not even 8:00 a.m. These guys are amazing. I had until 10:00 a.m. to know what the status of my Mercedes was because if it could not be done by 11:00 I would need to head over to Enterprise and rent the car and begin that nightmare. Well I'll be damned, but I called the place at 9:30 and this nice lady answers the phone and she tells me, " Oh yes Mr Sommers, your car is ready, total is $290 and you can pick it up whenever you like." I rode over there as fast as I could, stuck my bike in the back of my trunk, paid with my trusty Visa, thanked them, all and could not believe that I was on my way back to Greensboro with the car totally repaired by 10:00 a.m. These guys and gals not only saved me hours and days of unnecessary travel, but they relieved me of an incredible pressure from a potential logistic nightmare ;not to mention hundreds and hundreds of dollars of car rentals and gas and God knows what. They now have a customer for life and I hope they read this review because I do not feel I truly expressed my appreciation at the time of the repair. I was literally speechless! They had cars everywhere, and although very very, busy tuning cars, they were totally in tune to my need to get back to Greensboro to teach and made it such a pleasure and so easy. They were able to work my truck in (my boyfriend dropped me off) and much to my surprise they were able to plug it and called me in an hour and a half. Really impressive service! The Boys could not get me in quickly for an oil change and inspection, so I went elsewhere and got the work done in just a few hours.

Had a damaged side view mirror. Parts seemed to be available on line. Went to a competitor and asked if they would install the parts if I bought them. The answer was a flat "No." Went to the Boys, and a group of three came out to look at the car. I had the diagram that showed the replacements for the damaged parts. They agreed to order, only to find out the parts were on back order, with no projected delivery date. As the car could be driven and the mirror could be used, we decided to wait for the parts to become available. After a few weeks, having heard nothing, I stopped by to inquire on the status, and the person at the desk told me, within seconds, that the parts were still unavailable. I was impressed by the efficiency of the system that allowed for such a quick response. No, not a computer, just several "pending" repairs in a folder at the desk. I thanked the woman and headed home. A week or so later I got a call to tell me the parts were in and asked if I could bring the car in a certain day. I missed the call, and I assumed I had missed the window offered. When I stopped by, not the case. I wasn't driving that car, so I said we'd bring the car in around noon, and that was fine. They said it should be ready by the end of the day. We dropped off the car, then went off to do other things. Got the call that the car was ready, got there before closing, and all was good. Until it wasn't. The mirror glass wasn't securely attached. It vibrated, making images in it blurry, suggesting it might just fly off. As it turns out, the mirror glass is attached with some clips at the top and, yes, two-sided tape at the bottom. Apparently the two-sided tape wasn't holding. I took the car back, and the mechanic who had done the replacement came out and pressed the mirror glass more firmly onto the frame that holds it. It has been perfectly fine since. His reason that it wasn't firmly attached to begin with was concern that the glass might break, so he didn't press as hard. I get that. You might wonder why I gave 5 stars to a repair job that required a return visit. The answer is that these folks are a pleasure to deal with, they know what they are doing, and if there is an issue, they make it right. We had the option of just buying a new mirror assembly, for almost $400. The eventual repair was well under $300. If I need mechanical work done on one of our cars, these will be the folks that we go to first. read more

We were so far from home with a significant problem. They could have taken advantage of the situation and charged a fortune but they didn't. They were honest, kind and efficient. The worst place to take your car!! They had my car for 6 weeks said it was fixed and in 2 days broke down on the side of the road, so took it back said they fixed it again and after I got it home it wouldn't start again! So after 1000 and 7 weeks of having my car it's worse then it was when I took it to them! Do not recommend them at all unless you want your car messed up worse then when you dropped it off! And now I have to take it somewhere else because I will not take it back! read more

I discovered the Toyota dealership in Charlotte, NC had left the oil cap off of my car when I had an oil change before going on vacation to Oak Island. I brought my car here and got it cleaned up and assessed for any problems this caused. Also had them look at the car and advise on some things that the dealership said were absolutely needed, found that this was not so, dealership wanted 297.00 for. Great work, honest and fair. I would not hesitate to bring my car here again. My only complaint is that if I ever have car trouble,I would absolutely trust them here and I would have to drive 200 miles or so to get it done here (or have it towed YIKES!!!), but might even be worth that)! If you are on vacation and have car trouble here or if you are a local, I would highly recommend. Very nice folks and I would definitely trust them, which I think is huge when you are having repairs done to your car. Honesty and competency are so important, you will get it here...
