This past year, I experienced an extremely traumatic family crisis that completely upended my world. For months, I struggled with severe anxiety, depression, and debilitating PTSD symptoms. Medication was only helping a little bit, and I didn't want to rely solely on it. I was looking for something that could provide more immediate and lasting relief, which led me to the Brain Wellness Center in San Ramon for TMS treatment. Before beginning treatment, I was in profound distress. I experienced intense visceral emotional reactions and PTSD symptoms that felt overwhelming. My trigger responses were debilitating and sometimes turned violent--I was throwing things, breaking things, and unable to control my rage. The emotional flooding was extreme, often leaving me gasping for air and doubled over in pain. I had strong urges to self-harm and uncontrollable impulses toward physical aggression, which I sometimes acted on. I couldn't engage in any therapeutic work--I couldn't even look at books about my type of trauma without becoming dysregulated. My mind was trapped in constant rumination and obsessive thoughts. The anxiety was so severe that I felt like I was losing myself. After completing 50 sessions of TMS, the transformation has been remarkable. I developed motivation for basic self-care like going to sleep early and taking vitamins--things that felt impossible before. When triggered now, I still feel anger surge through me, but I no longer have the urge to be physically aggressive. I can now engage in therapeutic work, reading books about my trauma and participating in therapy discussions. I still feel discomfort, but it's manageable--not the dysregulating panic I experienced before. I've learned to disengage and down-regulate when triggered. I'm calmer and better able to care for myself instead of drowning in obsessive thoughts. The compulsion toward physical aggression has dramatically decreased. My anxiety is much less intense--I can redirect my attention to self-care, and the upset no longer overwhelms me. Most importantly, I'm no longer on my knees or doubled over in emotional pain. I am able to walk toward healing. The doctors at Brain Wellness Center are truly exceptional. Both Dr. Hashemian and Dr. Palmer are deeply compassionate, excellent listeners, and incredibly knowledgeable--they've been doing this work for decades and are true experts. I felt confident I was in capable hands. What I appreciated most was their honest approach with no sales pressure. They truly want you to make the best choice for you, whether that means working with them or another TMS specialist. They were thorough in their assessments and committed to tracking progress systematically. Week by week, I could literally see the steady decline in my anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms through their comprehensive measurements. The most dramatic improvement was in my anxiety symptoms. I would say that I started feeling really noticeable relief from my symptoms after about 6 sessions. Next to the treatment's effectiveness, I was most impressed with the staff. After 12 years of struggling from severe social anxiety disorder and depression that kept him from going to traditional school or holding a job my son is starting his life at 24. I cannot begin to tell you the miracle this has been for him and our family. We tried everything from traditional medicine, supplements, diet, and lots and lots of therapy to no avail. My insurance approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and they are fairly conveniently located "behind" Santana Row. The therapy was for 30 days in a row and then the director decided to give me an additional week for free to solidify the results. Since then, they have followed up with me and done weekly GAD-7 and PHQ-9 questionnaires. My anxiety is GONE and my depression is almost gone. It seems weird having a giant magnet pulsating next to your head, making your cheek contract, but it WORKS. read more

I was new to this therapy and appreciate their exhaustive diagnostic tests and thorough review (many pdfs!) and recommendations for treatment. After completing 50 TMS sessions and 50 hours of audio training I can now hear the tones in speaking voices and have made significant improvements in left/right ear processing. Planning to continue more audio training to fully address the auditory issues. I came to the Brain Wellness Center in a very dark place, with my anxiety at an all-time high. Initially, I was skeptical about not needing medication to feel better, but this treatment has truly worked for me. I'll admit that by my 18th session, I still hadn't noticed any significant changes. However, after finishing my 23rd session, something shifted. The next day, dare I say it, was actually *good*! Slowly but surely, I started feeling happier and more social again. Before coming to the Brain Wellness Center I had been dealing with, well struggling with, what seemed like never ending depression. I just wanted to stay in bed all day everyday. Negative thoughts that often come with depression scared me into seeking TMS treatment. From the first appointment Dr. Hashemian and Dr. Krompier were knowledgeable, kind, and reassuring. Weekly checkins throughout the treatment with the Doctors as well. The treatment is quick but it is a commitment. 20 minutes 5 days a week. It is not painful and I had very minimal side effects, occasionally tired after the session. Everyone in the office is kind and I noticed my mood slowly but surely improve week after week. I received a call from Ali Hashemian (I believe he is one of the owners) some time ago. He did not call out of concern for a dissatisfied customer, but to harass me into removing my review. He told me "If you don't take down your review, we will be forced to take legal action against you". I explained to him that yelp is for expressing one's opinions in the form of reviews, that I cannot be forced to change my opinion, and that I don't appreciate threats of legal suits based on removing my review off Yelp. After I explained this, his tone changed and he offered to refund my $325 if I would 'reconsider' my review. I told him if he wants to refund my money he is welcome to, but if he wants to change my review, he would need to change my opinion. I gave him my email address and said he was welcome to message me. After our call, I saw an email with the subject "TMS and your review", where he again offered a refund if it would resolve the concern. I can only assume the concern he was referring to was the negative review. He also included his business infomercial and some links to TMS in the email, though they weren't links to any scientific information such as trials, studies, or medical results. Instead, they seemed to be anecdotal online articles and blog posts promoting TMS for patients that are resistant to medication. In their policy, they state "We are contracted by most insurance plans to provide TMS for Medication-Resistant depression patients. Although TMS may be used to treat other conditions, such use will not be a covered benefit." I do not argue this, nor am I commenting on this, or making claims about TMS, or the science behind TMS. I'm not a doctor and wouldn't make medical claims. I can, however, report my personal experience. On my first (and only) visit to The Brain Wellness Center, when they marketed a $10,000+ TMS treatment plan for me, I do not remember them ever mentioning approvals or trials based on medication resistant people, though they do cover it in the fine print. When a doctor uses phrases like 'works like magic' rather than explaining the science behind it or the demographic it is approved for, run for the hills. Do I believe the way they marketed their treatment was unethical? Without a doubt, yes. Am I alone in feeling this way? No, not at all. Other yelpers have reported similar experiences. In fact, 4 of the last 7 reviews also gave a 1 star review. I have paid all outstanding bills and stand nothing to gain other than expressing my opinion honestly and candidly. In the 80 or so reviews I have written over more than a decade of being a yelper, the majority are either 4 or 5 stars. tl;dr: The Brain Wellness Center is wonderful for brain health. Finding BWC: Working in healthcare, we were familiar with TMS prior to finding the Brain Wellness Center. I did a ton of due diligence, dove into the research, called the Stanford Lab (SAINT study) the person on the line was kind enough to answer my questions (which I don't expect they often have the time for). They did recommend a clinic close to them called Acacia, not that I want to put a price on my loved one's care, but their starting is 25k for 5 full days of very intense sessions, which just wasn't in our time nor financial budget, not to mention our concerns about that modality's "sticking power" as indicated in recent papers. I called a few clinics, actually - I was okay with doing however long a drive was needed for the best care possible. I will say that the initial review of BWC's website was a bit overwhelming, not as polished as other clinic sites, but chock full of all the pertinent information needed. I called and was directed back to the website - I get it, if we all took up time to go over every question, they would get nothing done. The website, in the end, does have much of the information needed, more so than other clinics I found. The intro: We were in full crisis when we contacted Dr. Hashemian - depression and most acutely, suicidality. I was fully braced to get a salesperson pitch since the BWC website gave off some of those vibes. I was very, VERY pleasantly surprised by Dr. Hashemian's empathy, straightforwardness, and how he was able to identify, before we really explained in depth, the experience and behaviors we were seeing. Hard to explain, but he just got it. It was clearly not his first rodeo. While I can get granular clinically-speaking and live in healthcare acronyms and processes, I definitely prefer explanations translated to real world behavior. He is great at this and it really helped me with goal and expectation-setting. We had pre-researched the process, so knew the general idea: touch-base with him, then brain mapping/testing, then scheduling of appts after the testing interpretation. We also understood the costs, since our loved one is under 18 and does not take meds, we would be paying out of pocket. There are no surprises, all costs are clearly indicated on the website and BWC's office crew are good at covering all of that again, if needed. I look forward to costs for TMS going down, but, in the meantime, we are very fortunate that we could afford it. The sessions: Read up on TMS, of course, but the hummingbird tapping on your head is a good analogy. There are different modalities depending on treatment plan, but that's the general idea. There was no pain, the seats are comfortable, one can watch a show on one's cell phone, watch tv, sit back and relax. The sessions are short, we did back to back for some due to scheduling with about 40+ mins in between (they'll have info on the spacing of appts). I would wait in the waiting room, I know some folks are dropped off and picked up after their session. The waiting room is not huge, but seats are cozy and, honestly, it was my one downtime moment of the day so I relaxed during sessions, too. Masks are required and I was happy for it as our hospital COVID numbers were rising during the time we were there (plus I wasn't interested in spreading viruses to the folks in that office who were helping save my loved one's life). The outcome: Please read further below to get past this next sentence. Some might not describe our outcome as a slam dunk in the way some folks describe their TMS outcomes (some folks go into full remission). Our family member has a presentation which makes outcomes of treatment hard to discern...but, as I mentioned, we had realistic expectation setting prior to starting. I believe this is important to try to do and understand. HOWEVER. Prior to TMS, our family member was crying every day, self-harming, wanting to die, verbalizing this daily. Immediately upon starting TMS, this stopped, which could be attributable to many variables, right? Except we also and nearly immediately noted positive shifts in behaviors, more engagement, less rumination. Even if our family member didn't recognize these changes, we very much did. It wasn't a slam dunk because our journey isn't over, but I deem TMS with BWC a success. Our follow-up brain mapping was helpful and useful for our decision-making process. It's quite likely our journey will include additional TMS sessions and these with the Brain Wellness Center. The team is lovely to work with and always helpful. When I say I am grateful for Dr. Hashemian, it's an understatement. He recognized the pain we were feeling, he spoke to that in a compassionate and actionable manner. From day one of talking with him, he gave hope and has not disappointed since. I am.surprised at the negative reviews that are posted. I finished my treatment at BW about a month ago. During the treatment I did not really feel a great deal of difference, but I was on medication from another doctor, that I was weaning myself off of. In the past when I had stopped my medication it was horrible. I just did not feel that I needed it anymore. I now am doing much better. I have had major depression for most of my adult life. I have clearer thinking, a better outlook. Friends who did not even know that I did this said I am calmer and more focused . The brain mapping was unbelievable, they could tell some of my behaviors just from the data from the brain mapping. Dr, H explained and sometimes re-explained things that I did not understand. The information from that I feel is invaluable. The staff were professional and very precise. Autumn, Myra, Daisy and I am so sorry I cannot recall the other lady I dealt with were all great. TMS is used for other conditions besides depression, and in the future, I will be returning to DR H to tackle those issues. I felt it was money well spent. read more

I went to about 8 weeks of treatment here everyday of the work week. My results were not where the doctors wanted them to be, so they switched sides of my head, then ended up treating both sides. Each week you meet with the doctors to assess your scores to see if you are improving. Each week you receive a message ahead of your appointment with the doctors that you must arrive (if in person) or sign-in (if remote) to your appointment 15 minutes before the scheduled time or your appointment may be cancelled. On average the doctors were at least 10 minutes late, which means you are waiting 25 minutes for them. Rarely did they apologize for being late. Then I was made to feel guilty because my symptoms were not improving. At our final meeting, one of the doctors said "you're not showing enough signs of improvement for insurance to authorize more treatments, so we are done here. Goodbye." Basically he made me feel like it was my fault I wasn't improving, then completely dismissed me when he realized they wouldn't be able to charge my insurance anymore. I was really disappointed in how the doctors handled themselves. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. read more

My son had depression and is on the Autism spectrum and an auditory processing problem. Dr. Hashmenian suggested TMS and Auditory processing training. What a blessing! The depression treatment was magical. First time in 30 years I don't need any medication to keep it under control. The staff took my online request and had everything organized so it was easy to give them my info and they got the treatment approved within an hour. So very grateful for TMS treatments, Dr. Hashemian and Dr. Krompier! The purpose of my review is to give hope and confidence to all who read this and who are suffering with Severe depression, like myself. My diagnosis was 17 yrs ago and was only offered prescription medications as treatment. The med's helped for a period of time but, with results came side effects too. The current episode was med. resistant and was the longest and disabling depressive episode to my history of this disease. We have been working with Dr. Hasmenian for over 3 years. He has given us very good council about our son who has APD and we have worked through the auditory training and have seen a significant difference in his hearing capabilities. My child was a patient many years ago. Ali has changed the company name. Here is an honest experience with him, My husband and I were very vulnerable at that time. We went to see Mr. Ali and our son was tested. He was diagnosed by them as having APD(auditory processing disorder) my son was tailored "music" to help his brain waves etc. I really don't know for sure if this helped my son. The attention and achievement center was the name of the business at that time. They did not accept private insurance and offered to give us the codes to seek reimbursement through our insurance. We spent over $10,000 in installments and they would have asked/collected more for continued testing and further treatment. I would caution parents out there and recommend you educate yourself getting to the bottom of whatever it is your child is struggling with. Whether its ADD, ADHD, APD....There are resources and alternatives when health insurance is relied upon. read more

I came to these people very depressed with anxiety.It really seemed like a real stretch that this could actually work.I mean magnets, electric shocks (Star Trek stuff).Well they strapped me to a chair and turned on the machine.A month layer I was 95 percent better. Went and saw Dr. Hashemian about three years ago. He had me take one test on a computer and then recommended over 10,000 dollars worth of brain scans. When I said I didn't have insurance, he attempted to pick up the phone and call my dad with my permission (I was 22 at the time). Took the test results to my doctor who I have seen for over 2 years and she said she didn't even recognize it. Said it was immoral for him to recommend such treatment after one simple test. Had testing done in Berkeley for a fraction of the price and was much more holistic. Dr. Hashemian is a businessperson before a doctor. He wants to make money and not actually help people. When I asked him if he knew of any doctors that took insurance he literally sneered at me and said no. Psychiatrists know huge networks of doctors and he surely did know someone. I am a 53 year old female. I had been suffering from depression for more than 20 years. I had gone to numerous psychiatries, psychotherapist and psychologists. I had been on many cocktails of medications. I had done every tests available to find out out why I was so depressed. I could not find any reason to be depressed. I was at the end of my rope. That is when I found the brain center in San Ramon. I made an appointment and went. Before I go I had no expectation. And thought this won't work either. The staff at the brain center were so kind, considered and helpful. They were very honest with me from the beginning. They never gave me false hope. They educated me about the science behind the technology. Everything made sense to me and I gave their program a try. I had to go there everyday for six weeks. I was never alone inside the room. It was a great atmosphere. I did not see any results until my 20th session. Suddenly I felt better I could c colors I started enjoying the nature. After reading the reviews I'm quite surprised because I had such a different experience. I first came here because my son was struggling with attention and focus issues. I was able to schedule a consultation right away. My son underwent assessments and was recommended neurofeedback and auditory processing treatment. I can't say enough good things about Brain Wellness Center and all their staff! Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable, and they were able to explain everything to me I'm simple layman's terms. They ran a brain map on me and Dr. Hashemian determined where things were going wrong in my brain and why it made focusing so hard. He recommended nuerofeedback, which basically retrains your brainwaves to stay in the correct pattern to stay focused. It took a couple weeks of treatments before I noticed a difference in my ability to focus, but after a few more weeks the changes were very apparent. Took my daughter here for testing for auditory processing disorder. Very impressed with the staff. Dr Hashemian was very professional and was very interested in helping our daughter. He didn't recommend having all the tests but only those necessary to help her. Very patient with the young ones and very nice to parents. I like that they give you a timeline for intervention and it's not indefinite. All the doctors are professionals with a lot of training.
