Because of Escollera's popularity with tourists AND locals alike, it gets busy so have a few things in mind: (1) give your name+last name to the host inside (2) if you can grab a high-top outside, go for it and get a Starter bite while you wait, (3) someone will yell out your last name, then (4) you're in. Attention from all the servers is definitely here and each offered individual tid-bit on what we ordered. Dozen oysters (or "12 pieces") were meaty and juicy with the right amount of oyster liquor. What's more, I know the oysters hubs and I have been getting on the East Coast in the States are good- but these here in Spain's Southern Coast are mind-blowing. Horseradish and mignonette? They're obsolete in these parts. You will get Tabasco as an alternate (for hubs) and some individually-packaged red wine. It did just fine. Prawns were good but the Sardines were excellent with a slightly crunchy-garlicky exterior. The oysters took it a bit over from what we've experienced during our stay. But come to think of it, comparing the quality and straight-from-the-sea catch to the East Coast, they were worth the €54. Skip the juicy-flavored sangria and go for a red or white instead. In essence, it's all about the seafood here.

We had been given menus immediately, but no one returned to take our order. My boyfriend had to stand and walk to the entrance of the inside dining to get the attention of a waiter. Mind you, we saw 4 inside walking back and forth, but again, there were no guests. We ordered a hamburger (13,50€) and Borqueronies (11,50€), water, small beer and a wine. The food was served in decent time and in the meanwhile, another table of diners had sat down outside. The hamburger was dwarfed by the bun. It was 1/4 inch thick and 4 inches across, had a single tomato slice and a scrap of lettuce. It was charred black on the outside but red on the inside - telltale indications of going from freezer to grill without being thawed out. This was smaller than Burger King's child's burger (meal) for 5,99€. The boyfriend's Boqueronies were "ok," but nothing special. No one ever returned to check on our food or ask if we wanted drink refills. The table that had been outside near us moved inside and inside had now filled. The wait staff was rushing around inside serving those dining inside. After 45 minutes, my boyfriend went inside to get the attention of the waiter and ask for the bill. We complained that no one had returned to our table - ever. He gestured pointing to all the people now sitting inside and said he was busy with those guests. Ummm.... weren't we "guests" as well? Rude, unapologetic attitude. Bill was 36€. Not recommended and will never return.

The artichoke hearts were wonderful. We had grilled vegetables and fish (rape) and our friends had grilled octopus (pulpo) and a skewer of fish shrimp and veggies over a wonderful rice base, with the smallest rice I've ever seen. All excellent. Confusion reigned when we ordered desert as the waiter knew the word fruit but not sorbet and my husband ended up with fresh sliced fruit. He was happy with it. My order of lemon ice cream was not available but instead of telling me it was not available and letting me choose something else, he brought me something he thought I wanted, which I didn't. When I clarified that I was ordering chocolate and vanilla ice cream, he brought me a desert that was neither and told me it was the only ice cream they had. It didn't take like ice cream, it was vanilla and chocolate but wasn't creamy. When I asked another waiter about it, he said it was an Italian dessert. It was good. When they realized the confusion, they sent a complimentary bottle of limoncello and four chocolate covered ice cream bites. So all was well. The restaurant is not expensive by North American standards but is for this region of Spain. We had a magical night with our first views of Gibraltar and the African coastline at sunset. I would come back.

There is seating in the "patio" with a nice man made fireplace in cooler months. There is the main area with the bar and a long table. And there is the option to sit on the 'terrace,' which is a pedestrian street. Weather cooperating, we love to sit on the terrace and people watch. All areas are extremely clean and cheerful. Service is friendly and efficient without being pesty. When a table is reserved, it is yours from your reservation time to the remainder of the evening. They never try to hustle you along so that others (without a reservation) might be seated. American restaurants could learn from this. The menu has about 30 different tapas offerings as well as pinchos, tostas, and entrees. There is something for every appetite. There is always one or two tapas of the day, which change. I am not a seafood eater, so I am thankful that at least half the items offered are not from the sea. My boyfriend loves seafood, so there is plenty to satisfy his tastes, too. We really like to chose 2 to 3 tapas each and that is very filling. My favorites are "taco de manzana" and the chicken burrito, oh, and the mini lamb hamburgers! I guess I really don't have just one favorite! Everything is very fresh and tasty. Most of the tapas are 2€ and 3€. The tostas are 8€ and very filling. My favorite is tosta queso de cabra. Among larger items, my boyfriend really likes the shrimp brick. They will also accommodate an appetite and make it larger or smaller. I normally drink sparkling water or tea. My boyfriend is the wine drinker. They have an extensive wine offering and at least once a month will have a special event with wine pairings or a wine class. They have a full time sommelier who organizes these events. There is also a full bar. I will usually have an after dinner drink. The pours are generous! Our bill for the evening (2 people) is usually 20€-25€ for 6 tapas, a wine (or two), water and an after dinner drink. Highly recommended!

I think the most expensive was 3,70€ with most priced at 2,60€ or so. The weather has been a bit chilly, so we have sat inside rather than outside. It is very pleasant with upbeat music and stools. The restrooms are super clean. Service is absolutely excellent; friendly and efficient. We were never rushed and tapas would appear one after another instead of all at once. We feel they are genuinely happy you are here. The check has been between 18€ and 26€ for 6 tapas, 2x 0,0 beer and a sparkling water. There has not been a single time we have had to wait for a table.
