This is a gem of a place right next to the river. Try and imagine the prices you'd pay in London or…read moreKingston in similar proximity to the Thames and then look at the menu here - its so reasonable. The staff are really friendly and down to earth and the surroundings are fantastic, especially when the weathers good. There's loads on the menu from jacket spuds to breaded plaice so if your in a hurry or want a nice long lunch, both are catered for. They do a fantastic full English here too or if your feeling adventurous, I'd recommend the Loch Fyne Kippers. Its fully licensed here and they do serve a really nice South African Merlot for around £12 or of course you can just stick to the Harveys as it hasn't had more than 20 yards to travel!

Brasserie conjures pictures of a cool young couple enjoying a light lunch and a glass of wine, where as in reality you are far more likely to encounter old age pensioners nursing a cup of tea and a sarnie here! Not that there is anything wrong with this, I came here myself the other day and nursed a cup of tea and a slice of carrot cake! The tea was tea and the cake was pretty tasty although the frosting was overly sweetened. Other foods include sandwiches, bagettes, fish and chips, pie and chips etc etc. The food is apparently all homemade and looked reasonably tasty. Situated in a small shopping hall with a food hall, craft shops and gift retailers, there are also said to be good views over the river but we weren't able to see them from where we were sitting. They advertise free wifi but it wasn't working on our visit. Service was a little slow and a little surly. Overall, it's fine for a cake and a cuppa, but there are better options in Lewes if you require something a little more substantial.

Just to be clear about my scoring: One star removed for warm champagne and rubbery calamari, one star put back on for Charlie letting us know that he had some fillet steak, which wasn't on the menu. However, if you see the online menu (which must be the chain standard menu, it is not on the list). It must be a reduced menu in the restaurant due to Covid-19. The latter came about as my wife asked, why I wasn't having the rump steak cooked blue. I said I reserve that for fillet steak. That's when Charlie said he had some fillet. So, I had it cooked blue. My wife had the fillet steak too. Mine was cooked to perfection, and clearly a well aged piece of beef, as it was purple inside and no blood residue. For starters: Mine - Fried salt & pepper calamari, jalapeños, lime & Sriracha mayonnaise (though served with lemon not lime). Wife's - Salmon Carpaccio (not shown on the menu mentioned). Mains already mentioned. Sweet: Both had crème brûlée. Very big, wife couldn't finish hers, and I just managed mine. Wines: Champagne - Lanson Blanc de Blanc Main - Bottle of Malbec (Nieto Don Nicano) Sweet (me only) - Glass of Late Harvest Tokaji With my coffee - Hennessy XO Prior to the meal: Wife - Double Gin and Tonic (Fever Tree) Me - Double Famous Grouse and Ginger Ale See complete receipt. Charlie was the manager and an excellent host. We had a good rapport and a bit of banter. We will return some day, with the kids.....
