I am the proud father of a 2nd grader and two Kindergarten students at Brawerman. I am so grateful to have my children attend this school. The combination of academic standards and sense of community is second to none. The emphasis on compassion and kindness is seen across all aspects of the school: administrators, teachers, students, and support staff. After taking a tour, I could tell that the campus and amenities were top notch but it wasn't until we got to hear 6th graders speak first-hand about their experience at Brawerman that we were convinced this is the best place for our children to attend school. These 6th graders spoke with confidence and shared their experiences at Brawerman. They have a buddy system were older students are buddies and mentors to younger students, giving them all an opportunity to be mentors and mentees. I feel so lucky to have found this school for my two boys. Having attended a public school, I was blown away at how a school could teach children at such a high and thoughtful level. Brawerman East is truly a hidden gem. It keeps up with all the other bigger independent schools academically but also exceeds my expectations in focusing on social-emotional learning. Classes are small with lots of individual attention and your child is met where they are-whether extra help or an extra challenge. The teachers are young, high energy, and so creative in integrating their lessons across the curriculum. The parent community is warm and welcoming. We love that our children have a strong relationship with the clergy. Last year they had one on one discussions homelessness, cancer, and all the big life questions our kindergartener brought up. Before our family moved from NYC to Los Angeles, we hoped that we would be lucky enough to find a community of people, educators, and friends that we would feel as close to, and connected with, as our family and friends back East. Lucky... we found that... in Brawerman East. The faculty, teachers and administrators constantly impress us, the parents, with their professionalism, quality care of our children, and astute attention to the academic prowess of each child. Their academic approach includes promoting STEM, innovation, creative arts, and most importantly, teaching core values of kindness, respect, honesty, compassion, and giving to the community. These formative and foundational teachings are demonstrated when we our daughter shares a new song she learned, or tells us about a cool project that she did with younger grades. The fact that the school buddies up someone from 6th grade to look after a 1st grader is because at a young age, they are teaching community, compassion, and respect for all. On top of these invaluable lessons that kids learn on a constant basis, our daughter has formed incredible friendships, and my husband and I are so grateful to have reaped those benefits as well. This school also serves as a spiritual guide for our children, providing them with a solid, Jewish foundation, where they learn Hebrew, partake in weekly shabbat services, and learn about their heritage and religion to help them identify as a Jew. Growing up in Buenos Aires, I had the opportunity to attend a school that catered to our socio-emotional development and I credit it for shaping me into the person I am today. From the time my kids were born, I dreamt of them having the same type of education I was so fortunate to have, but was doubtful I would find a comparable school. But then I discovered Brawerman. From our initial school tour, I knew it was special when a group of kids running down the hallway stopped in their tracks to say, "hello". Now in our second year (kids in kinder and 1st grade), I can say with confidence that this school is everything I had hoped to find and more; fantastic academics, incredible teachers, and a caring, wonderful community. We moved to Los Angeles 6 years ago from New York City. Our biggest goal was to find a community where our children's academic and social growth could be fostered and where we could find open and welcoming families that could become lifelong friends. We found it all at Brawerman East. The education my children our receiving is outstanding. The educators are passionate about differentiation, providing each student with tools and tactics that work for them. The social emotional tools are immeasurable. This is a very special place, a gift for east side families. It is our daughter's fourth year and we are at constant awe of her social-emotional and academic growth. Unlike a lot of schools that pride themselves with embracing every child and his/ her style of learning, THIS is a place for all kids: every child is being captured and seen for their strengths as well as needs. It's developmental approach allows kids to LEARN HOW TO LEARN and as a result our daughter has grown to be an enthusiastic reader, scientist, artist, musician, etc. Without too much pressure of spelling tests and homework I can say that our child is already above grade level in many areas. Discussing my feelings about Brawerman has to start with gratitude. I had my eye on several other schools for my two boys, but my wife was a huge fan of Brawerman East from the very beginning. She connected to the school and was passionate about our boys attending, so when it came time to choose, it was a no brainer. Now, in our second year, I'm grateful everyday that we found such an incredible school, that goes far beyond its excellent academics. It has a nurturing environment, with extraordinary teachers, and prides itself on fostering socio-emotional growth. It does all of this while immersing its students in a culturally Jewish education. From the moment Covid began and schools were forced to close, they wasted no time in implementing an incredible virtual program. It was nothing short of amazing. Then, when the LA Heath Department began issuing wavers for K-2 students to return, once again, Brawerman was a step ahead and had already invested heavily in implementing an extraordinary protocol that was quickly approved, allowing our kids to return to campus safely. Finally, when my mother suffered a tragic fatal accident several months ago, the Brawerman community immediately rallied around us. As I said, I am thankful everyday that my wife pushed me to send our two boys to Brawerman. The school has already made such a huge difference in our lives. read more

Brawerman Elementary School is a very special place. You will not find a school with a closer, more supportive community of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff. Even the security guards are a special blend of friendly and firm that make you feel safe and never scared. From the small class size to the new facilities, Brawerman delivers an excellent K-6 education, with wonderful teachers who prepared the students to succeed in middle school. I was also impressed with the way they wove Tikkun Olam - "Repairing the World" - into not only the curriculum, but into the whole ethos of the school. Those activities provided amazing opportunities for student and parent participation, and helped us look at the world around us, and our role in it, differently. We feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to send our child to Brawerman East, and to experience their unique approach of warmth, academic rigor, and Jewish values. read more

This school has been much more enriching to all our lives--more than I ever expected from an elementary school--which makes me so happy we decided to send our boy there. Our son had gone to the ECC preschool and we were very impressed when we went on the tour of the elementary school but were still on the fence about sending two children through private school. All I can say is I am SO glad that we did. Our son who is in Kindergarten has made wonderful friends whose parents have become our friends. He loves going to school and playing and learning -- he is exactly where I want him to be in terms of a relationship with school : excited, curious, supported, and making strides at his own pace around literacy. I really value the ethos of the school, which is to teach at the level of the child and not hold them up to standards that are age based. By second grade, the window around literacy will show if the child needs more support, which eliminates all the anxiety and pressure kids feel around achieving benchmarks in these early literacy years. I also have the greatest respect for the teachers who are really passionate and love children. The class size is small, 8 boys and 8 girls which feels balanced and manageable. By extension, the community around the temple is extremely positive, inclusive, and provides another layer in our lives that is so special. Rabbi Joel has been wonderful in the way he holds space for the community to share in a present, honest way. Rabbi Aviva kicks off each day in song with her guitar and brings beautiful messages for the children to contemplate as they start their day. The after school programs are enriching and meaningful. I was not raised Jewish and I feel very much a part of the community as there are so many opportunities to share ideas, learn, and support our children as we make this journey together through elementary school. The only downside is that it only goes through sixth grade! I wish it continued until 8th grade. read more
