There's plenty of seating inside, and outside, and it's seat yourself wherever you like. Our server was great, and provided us lunch menus in English. I also pulled up the 'drink' menu, and translated it into English (they have some fun beer snacks including bitterballen). I started with a tripel, and opted for the onion soup for lunch (and some bitterballen). The onion soup was very flavorful, with plenty of onions, and a nice piece of bread, with plenty of cheese on top. The bitterballen were very tasty, and exactly as I remember them - crispy on the outside with a meat mouse inside - delicious (particularly with a beer). We really enjoyed our stop here!

Well. We got married here. That might say enough. But lets begin at the beginning. This restaurant…read moreis situated in the idyllic town of Haarzuilens. It's quite like an open-aired museum: all the homes are retained in a sort of medieval style and the town wants to keep it this way. It's our own little Stars Hollow, for the Gilmore Girl fans out there. It's very near the castle (Ter Haar) and actually build in the same timespan. It used to be the gathering place for the town's leaders. Lots of history to the place for sure. The staff is very friendly and consistent. Some places have new staff all the time. 't Wapen has a senior staff that is always around and it's such a pleasure when they get to know you and remember you. The food is of good quality. They don't offer a lot of vegetarian options, but their pancakes rock and you will certainly get a bit portion of whatever you decide to order. It's a great place for families as well, old or young. For our wedding, we found out they used the upper part of the building for ceremonies and dinner parties (among others). We took a look in their ceremonial room and knight room and new it was the perfect place for our tiny, intimate wedding. We requested a completely vegetarian dinner menu (three courses with three options) and they altered a couple dishes to provide this for us. They accommodated our needs perfectly and we could leave everything to the experienced staff (they had more experience with weddings then we did, anyhow!) Overal the staff was so friendly and helpful and they made our big day into a wonderful, cozy and unforgettable pleasant experience. So yes, this place has a special place in our hearts. It might not be the best of reviews because, hey, not everyone plans to wed here, but I'd still love to share our experience. If you are in the neighborhood, add a walk through the castle's garden and the town and come here for lunch, dinner or a drink. On a beautiful spring day, I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

I think we were the first to arrive for dinner around five. We quickly settled on the option for a "carte blanche" chef's choice (four courses plus extras for 50 Euro). That sort of dinner is my post-night-flight ideal: Something exciting to keep everyone up late enough to ward off jet-lag, gladly entrusting many of the decisions to someone more awake. They suggested it would be reasonable to split that for two between our family of three, given the kid's smaller appetite, that was definitely the correct call. The meal was phenomenal, every dish was a beautiful blending of textures and flavors. They cleverly paired the dishes for each course. Everything looked perfect, starting with the food, but the whole dining area was a lovely space, including the view into the open kitchen. Even the flower arrangements around the dining room were strikingly beautiful. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. I enjoyed a beer from Utrecht's own Brouwerij Eleven to accompany my meal. Koenraad's selection of beer is smaller than their extensive wine list, but has a reasonable amount of variety. I didn't look at the wine list in detail, but the other parties present seemed pleased with their selections.
