Probably the best dining experience I had in Amsterdam. Came here for my last night in Amsterdam and it was a great way to end my trip altogether. My friend and I pretty much did a three course meal here and it was one hell of a three course meal. We started our with Greetje's Big Beginning which included all 6 of their starters including Roulade of Spring Chicken, Pickled and Smoked Sea Bream Fillet, Mousse of Dutch Lady Blue Cheese, Bouillon of Dutch Beefsteak Tomatoes, Green Pea Soup (which I liked the best), and Crispy Sautéed Black Pudding. For the main course I got the Lamb (Greetje's favorite) which is a roasted fillet of lamb with green asparagus, green beans, potato gratin and its own gravy with heather honey. Very highly recommend this selection for your main. The course was then followed by the Greetje's Grand Finale which included all of their desserts on their menu. All of this came at the cost of €55 per person which is quite the deal. The service is phenomenal. They were very welcoming and made sure you watch your steps going up as some of the steps were taller than others. Very helpful recommendations were provided and recommendations on what to eat first when the Greetje's Big Beginning and the Greetje's Grand Finale came out added to the dining experience. Wonderful small quaint restaurant. Pretty quiet when I walked in. Service was pretty consistent. The wine list wasn't huge. The food was great. I had the lamp. It was served with potato gratin on the side. I think without the potatoes it would have been slightly dull. The soup I had was a green pea soup. It was delicious. Two thumbs up. Wonderful local restaurant that features fresh, local ingredients. No problem ordering in English. Bread was served with a spread comprised of pork belly fat and apple compote. Definitely different and surprisingly good. The dishes were light and delicious. I was surprised to find white asparagus as a choice for main dish and am glad I ordered it. The old-fashioned Dutch wallpaper was a nice touch. I haven't seen these in 30 years! Interesting that a bottle of beer (3.5 euros) costs less than a bottle of sparkling water (5 euros). Yum! Came here while on holiday in Europe after reading a brief description in my guide book. My companion made reservations online in the morning for dinner. We ended up having to walk quite a bit after getting off the tram but that was only because we walked passed the cross street by accident! It was a bit rainy, which made the commute a little difficult, and it ended up making us about half an hour late for our reservation. However, the restaurant wasn't full when we got there so we were able to be seated right away - great service! I got the anglerfish and this rose wine (ended up choosing one of the cheapest wines I could find) but it was SO GOOD! The fish was cooked perfectly and not fishy tasting at all but really fresh and ocean-y (if that makes sense). My companion ordered pork medallions which came with something called 'hot lightning' which was potatoes and apples and spices mashed together - really good. It's pretty fancy and expensive, but I didn't feel shy or embarrassed about being a tourist. Ambiance is really romantic and sweet and the wait staff is so friendly and helpful. read more

Food, service and price were all good. I had a 3 course set and each dish was good. The food is 'calorie dense' so bring an appetite as it was a heavy meal. If you're in the mood for traditional Dutch cooking, slightly modernized, I think you'll enjoy this place. The ingredients are high quality and you can taste it. *pork fat spread for bread. I ate this in Poland last month and the Dutch version is way better. I also thought the white asparagus were delicious and I now understand why these are so popular in this part of the world. I got mixed feelings about this Place. We shared the large starter platter and added the sandwiches with fois gras and the black pudding so we got small samplers of all the appetizers. Some like the soup and the sugarbread with fois gras was great while some of the fish treats really didnt taste much at all. My main was supposed to be "Chicken filé with saffron sauce and mashed potatoes". Since i dont like my food on a bone i was quite disappointed when the chicken was on the leg wich was not like described on the menu. The sauce was "ok" and the mash was really good. My girlfriend had the veal filé with a strange potatoe cake filled with with sausage from the netherlands and herbs. There really was more sausage then potatoe in that sidedish and was more like a dish on its own then working good with the filé. The steak and red wine sauce was fine though. With one bottle of wine, 2 beers and a shared dessert the check was 145 € exkl tip and i dont think it was worth it. With food thats only ok and the high prices i cant give Greetje more then 3 stars. read more

Dutch comfort food at it's best. Amazing local ingredients served in the traditional dutch style with an ambiance that is well worth the visit. We were lucky enough to go in the spring time so local asparagus were front and center. The white asparagus with sweetbreads were to die for and the veal rib eye was so tender and flavorful it was unbeatable. I am a huge fan of blood sausage so I would say go for it, unfortunately my father is not a huge fan so I was "forced" to eat the entire plate myself. We were both shocked by the service. While no one seemed to be over the age of 16, they were all very professional, laughed at all of my dad's bad jokes and gave great insight into each dish and what was the best that day. Right on a canal and decorated with old dutch chairs and wood that screams Amsterdam. I would recommend Greetje to anyone coming to Amsterdam and wants to try Dutch food at it's best (outside of french fries and mayo), or locals who want to eat delicious food. read more

My husband and I like dining out. A lot. When we travel, we always try to find the local favorites and try to avoid tourist traps because we want a more resident/neighborhood experience. We read great reviews about Greetje and were genuinely intrigued by what upscale/traditional Dutch food would be like. Perhaps we aren't familiar enough with traditional Dutch food or maybe we were expecting something different, but we weren't really blown away by the food. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, although it isn't our taste (it's more traditional than we were expecting). The menu was a little limited, but again, maybe it's just because we aren't well-educated on what authentic Dutch cuisine really is? The wait staff was very attentive and they were more than happy to explain unknown ingredients to us, so as a dining experience, it was pleasant. However, when factoring price and our enjoyment of the food into the consideration set, I think we would have rather eaten at Restaurant Gebr. Hartering again - it's right across the street and is more in line with our palette. read more

This restaurant was recommended by the manager of the unit my wife and I rented during our stay in Amsterdam as one of a small few that served seasonal Dutch cuisine. It was stunning from the bread with seasoned pork lard through to the coffee at the end. The wait staff were very knowledgeable on all aspects of the menu including the beverages and assisted us in making excellent decisions. I definitely recommend the "Big Beginning" which is a sampler of all the starters. A great way to prepare your taste buds for a main that is cooked to perfection. I had the veal cheeks with duck liver on a bed of pureed potato and parsnip. The veal was so tender it fell apart to the fork and the duck liver was rich and creamy. We were told because the menu is seasonal it changes about every six weeks. I urge you to try this restaurant, you won't be disappointed. read more

But I expected something different/better after reading the reviews here. I didn't have dinner here though I did have the opportunity to browse the menu. It's primarily a Dutch menu but creative and well presented with a nice variety of meats and fish. It's also a cozy little restaurant with an elegant yet comfortable decor. The service was warm and hospitable. Though I only had a drink here while awaiting friends to go to another place the staff made me feel welcome and offered me the house Frisen bread which I highly recommend. It was a dark sugary bread that was served with two spreads that were also lekker. I'll definitely be going back for dinner sometime. The atmosphere, the menu and the service were all worth five stars in my opinion. read more

What a lovely neighborhood restaurant! It's gezellig especially on a date or just a refined dining experience without being pretentious. All of the dishes we ordered were delicious, creative, and beautifully balanced. Most of the items on the menu were organic and I was there on a Saturday night. This is certainly a jewel of Amsterdam's restaurant offerings. Authentic Modern Dutch Cuisine! I dined here with colleagues and experienced some very nice food as well as service. The server does a great job introducing the menu as well as history of the restaurant. Greetje's atmosphere is modest, somewhat rustic yet elegant elements spread about. This is a great place to dine with friends, colleagues or a romantic night out. If you're in Amsterdam, place this in your Top 5 places to eat. Our group had a prefix menu set up: Fillet of Sea Halibut, a Dutch Roast or a Croquettes (vegetarian) entree. Our "Big Start" as they call it consists of a variety of items: Ox tail soup, creamy split pea soup, paté of wild duck, black pudding, foie gras, in-house baked breads and a few other items. The deserts were also served in a collection of variety. It's a fantastic meal and their wine selection is quite good. You won't be disappointed. read more

I've been here twice in the last year and had two completely different experiences. The first visit earned 5 stars which is why my husband and I returned to celebrate a special occasion dinner. This review is for our 2nd visit two days ago. The hostess took our coats, dropped them on top of the bar and said "don't worry, I'll hang these up". But when we returned for our coats after the meal, they could not find them at the coat check because they were still on the bar. So weird. We were seated by a window with a great view of the canal but we froze because of the draft. They didn't offer any specials and both of our meals were so under-cooked that we didn't think it was safe to eat. The waiter never brought us the drinks we ordered. He also warned my husband that the duck he ordered was 'wild and recently shot'. The duck breast my husband received had a large bloody clot and it was uncooked. Cutting into the meat released a large pool of blood on the plate. It was a little horrifying. We informed the waiter of the issues and there was no apology - instead they gave us 1 glass of wine on the house. I live in Amsterdam and I'm familiar with the overall low quality of Dutch service & Dutch food when compared to the US or the UK, but I was surprised at how awful our second visit was. read more

Impression; very touristy restaurant no real dutch experience ;( I am an open minded Muslim and For religious reasons I cannot eat pork, as soon as we got the menu we all highlighted clearly we don't eat pork or any pork products, at least on 4 different occasions just to make sure the non native English speaking waiter understands, I ordered the veal with mash and sausages, I was very curious about the sausages and asked the waiter if the sausages were pork, he insisted it wasn't and confirmed. As I went thru the meal my Christian friend was kind enough to try the sausage and he confirmed it was pork, I asked the waiter and then another waiter who ran to the kitchen because he wasn't sure and as it turned out my suspicion was correct it was pork! I was appalled to say the least, if the waiter can't speak English here in such a touristy restaurant where else will they speak English. My evening was ruined because of the arrogance and inconsideration of the restaurants untrained waiter. Finally overall impression this is a place for a tourist who is willing to pay 20 euros for soup, the true dutch experience is missed being so close to central station, it is also a very loud for large groups so U miss the peaceful atmosphere. read more

I went here after a long day at SAIL on the river IJ. After this long event my dad and I were really hungry so I thought it would be a good time to try Greetje. It's located on a smaller street right off of Prints Hendrikkade (if you walk down until you're in line with NEMO you'll see Peperstraat). We didn't have a reservation but there were a lot of no-shows so thankfully we were able to get a table. We ate outside but once the wind started to pick up the waiter brought us inside before it started raining. The interior is a very charming house, with the kitchen in the basement. The waiters, though very young, we're all very nice and attentive, continually asking if we needed anything else and if we're enjoying ourselves. My dad and I both ordered from their 3 course price fix. I had the meat starter, pork with potatoes entree and licorice creme bruille with ice cream. Overall it was a very nice dinner and beautifully presented but I feel like I had better food in cheaper places. My entree was a thick slice of pork with sauce and mashed potatoes with apple. It was really good but seemed a bit over priced. Either way I would go back and try something different, because looking around the dinning area it looked like there were more interesting plates for me to try. read more

Dutch food can be difficult to find in Amsterdam in a sea of Argentinian steak houses, sushi buffets, and English pubs. But Greetje presents modern Dutch cuisine that is unique, tasty and artfully presented. While I did not have an entree, I ordered the appetizer sampler for two, which included every starter from the menu. The set arrived in a tower with two plates, one with hot items and one with cold items. The hot items included mushroom with bread and a broth with mushrooms. Both were light yet flavorful and was a great way to start a meal. The top plate included 4 different items, and my two favorite included a mackeral brandade and a pork terrine. The chicken medallions were button-sized but with the fresh parsley and parsley oil, interesting. The bread here is amazing and it is served with two spreads, a red beet colored one and one made with pork fat, which was very tasty. Overall, it was a nice stop, with some very unique dishes that blends both traditional and modern Dutch cuisine. read more

I'm supposed to be having a baby in like 2 weeks, so my husband and I went here recently for a last restaurant hurrah. At 53 euros per person for a tasting menu, it was a bit of a splurge. I'd say it's worth it if you're looking for something "fancy" and you're curious about traditional Dutch food. Eating out in Amsterdam is just expensive in general, so I honestly didn't side-eye the price at all, not for what we got. Bonus: they take credit cards! That's rare around here. Anyway, you get small portions of *all* appetizers and *all* desserts as part of the menu. You also get to pick from any of their main courses. It's an extra 4 euros per person to add their famous sugar bread + duck liver sandwich. We went ahead and did that. Our favorites: - Mustard soup - Pea soup rollade - Trout rilette - Frisian sugar bread sandwich with duck liver - Licorice creme brulee + ice cream - Dutch shrimp amuse-bouche - Black pudding with applesauce - Pear tart with caramel sauce - Groninger poffert (kind of reminds me flavor-wise of a scone) Both the appetizer and dessert tastings were just fabulous. Where things fell a bit short for me was with the main course. I had the pork loin. The mushrooms, mashed potatoes and duck liver sauce were delicious but it was served with several thick slices of pork. That much meat threw the balance off and was overwhelming. I would've been happy with just one piece of meat, and felt really guilty letting most of it to go to waste. Great service, awesomely kitchy decor, lovely location. Several of my favorite travel guides (Luxe and Timeout) and locals I spoke with endorse Greetje as a bastion of traditional Dutch cooking. It was simply too simple fare for me. The Frisian sweet bread (literally sweet slices of bread, not to be confused with offal sweetbreads) lightly spread with duck liver (okay so the feeling is offal) were divine. Maybe go to Greetje just to try this. Now that I think about it the Frisian onion soup was tasty too. As was the braised veal and mashed potatoes with leeks. We ordered the foie gras sandwich with apple compote and a reduced apple syrup, served on a delicious oat bread. It's one of THE best foie gras dishes we have ever eaten. I had the suckling pig pork chop...juicy, tender, thick cut, outstanding. My hub had the chicken thigh stew, everything that a homemade stew should be but better. The braised cabbage and parsnips on the side were outrageously tasty. We wanted dessert...but stuffed ourselves on the dinner. Hats off to the chef/proprietor. Excellent job! PS, helpful hint, they cannot get the heat off in the building. AC is running but wear layers so u can get cool. It's worth the warmth to eat such good food. It is really easy to find along the River and I was told it would be classic Dutch cuisine with a modern touch. We showed up early for our reservation and they took our jackets to an undisclosed location then sat us at a nice table upstairs. We were able to get wine rate away but did not receive a menu until a stern look was given toward a waitress. I don't mind being served a drink as soon as I am seated but menus are typically essential to the dining experience. Food was great. The stewed pork was perfect complement to the mash potatoes with Bacon and green beans cooking in, of course, bacon. Thankful my gf loves licorice because I wanted to spit the licorice ice cream and crem brûlée. What a dish!! I do recommend this place to all that come but I hope your wait staff is a little more attentive then mine were. read more

Came here with wife on Tuesday night. Got reservations over the phone an hour or two before arriving. Definitely need to reserve as they are fully booked. The restaurant has excellent service and their staff is super friendly. They are apt and able to answer and recommend suggestions. The place serves authentic Dutch foods and has a menu that allows its patrons to construct various ways of eating... - tasting menu which let's you try most of their appetizers, a subset of their entrees, and a sampling of their desserts. - you can get the combination appetizer which gives you a serving or all of their hot and cold plates plus their special appetizers. - you can get a sampling of their desserts - a la carte on everything. Would recommend doing the big beginning appetizer sampler plus extra for their restaurant special appetizers (Frisian sugarbread is a must, very tasty) Ordered the flounder and the braised beemster veal. The food was very nicely prepared and tastes very differently from the cuisines I've had thus far (perhaps this is true local Dutch cuisine).
