A group of five of us visited Woburn Tuesday midday for a visit to the Runaway Train breakout room. As a group of first-timers, we were all a little anxious about what to expect. After a brief overview from our host, we were locked in our room to watch a short film which set up the challenge...we had an hour to stop a runaway train. Then we just stood there looking around, but once we got going, we were caught up in the fun. Every once in a while, our host would make an announcement into the room with a little prompt. At one point, when we tried multiple combinations to open a lock, we finally all agreed to ask for guidance. Just the tiniest hint was provided, which put us back on track again. Several times, we celebrated our victories with high fives, then when we stopped the runaway train with time to spare, we all hugged! However, the voice from afar taunted, "you're not done." We still had to unlock the train doors to save the passengers, which we approached in a panic. It turns out we had plenty of time, since we escaped with over 4 minutes to spare. The only difficulty was that some of the reading material was a little small, and for a group of women approaching middle-age, we had a hard time and had to share two pairs of readers among us! But what a fun, mentally stimulating hour we had. We're looking forward to trying another challenge again very soon! read more

Went in for the kidnapping esape room and ended up loving it so much we stayed to do another one. Had a lot of fun with my husband and I'm planning on coming back with my friends. Staff was also great! Super nice and helpful. read more

Went to Breakout Boston on 12/27/17 with my friend Abby to do our first ever escape room. Though we may not have successfully completed the room we started with, (we were so close), it gave us the determination and urge to want to escape from more rooms and so we did! We successfully completed 3/4 rooms in one day, with just the two of us. The adrenaline rush you get during your escape and after is crazy fun! The staff at Breakout Boston are genuinely some of the nicest and friendliest employees I've encountered in regards to any business. They truly care about their clients experiences and enjoy doing what they're doing. It is so hard to come across a business where employees are so engaging and optimistic and are fully enjoying their jobs. It goes without saying, Abby and I would highly recommend others check out Breakout Boston! They gave Abby and I such a fun filled day to remember and there's no doubt in my mind they'd give others one as well. Thanks to our game masters, Alex, Christopher, and Michael for a great day! We were a group of 8 today and did the Museum Heist breakout successfully. The nice thing is, unlike most other places, they will give you unlimited clues. That was probably why we made it out with 10 minutes to spare. Most places will just give you clues every 5 minutes but not more often. The puzzles were fun but a bit repetitive with lots of locks and a few keys. There were some elements that were really ingenious, but mostly we were just finding numbers or words that led to opening locks. Our gamemaster was not enthusiastic at all. It was clear the person didn't want to work there. At the end after we solved it, we were ushered out quickly to get our group photo and leave. So we had a mixed experience - it was a very fun group activity and getting out in time was very satisfying, but the somewhat uncreative puzzles and the attitude of the single staff was a downer. We noticed that the staff for another group was very enthusiastic so looks like your mileage will vary. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars. On the fence on this one... read more

My family of four (youngest was 16) had a great time doing "Museum Heist". There was a good variety of puzzles to solve and each of us was able to contribute something. Patrick, our gamemaster, was fantastic, providing just the right amount of help when we needed it. We definitely look forward to returning! read more

I recently tried Breakout for the first time, and I really enjoyed it. I have done a handful of rooms before, so I have a bit of experience. The only thing that was unusual about this room for me was being with a group of first-timers. We had a group of 5 and did Operation: Casino. Firstly, I'm not a huge fan of the debriefing videos. When I get in a room, I want to start searching instantly. That being said, I really liked the plot and it was incorporated well into the puzzles. The scenic was slightly better than good, but not dazzling. It makes me groan when I walk into a room with a lot of little things to keep track of, like chips and cards. There wasn't really a lot of direction with what to do with either in the very beginning so it was a little daunting and made for a slow start. The puzzles fell between tedious and amazing. There were a few puzzles where you had to do rather tedious math with no provided calculator or movable white board. These were not insurmountable issues but it just made solving these puzzles a little annoying. One more negative, one of my pet peeves is when you find the numbers that clearly go to a certain lock, but there is no direction to which order they go in. However, most of the puzzles were really fun, and there were a couple that were spectacular! Our GM Mike was excellent, only giving clues when needed and calm and collected. This came in handy during the end of the room where I may have gotten too invested, and was possibly yelling at him to "JUST GIVE US THE CODE" to a puzzle at the end on the more tedious/lack-off-direction side. Speaking of the employees, I really enjoyed everyone I met here, but it's sad for me when none of the employees have visited other escape rooms in the area and I have no one to nerd out with. Overall: totally solid room even for someone who has done a few before. The skeptical members of the group were all enjoying themselves by the end. I plan to be back for Museum Heist and possibly others depending on the scariness level :P read more

I actually went at the same time as Hayley M. Though I echo many of her thoughts: In summary: The settings were great and there were excellent attentions to detail The GMs were super responsive and communication was clear throughout The puzzles were often very creatively done. I'm hardly a veteran of Escape rooms, but I thought they were innovative or at least very fresh. The style of puzzles were really great and appropriately challenging for college educated people. Everyone had moments where they felt they really contributed to the success of the group. Additionally, my high rating comes from how many experiences are present, the superb host/GM interactions, and the quality in comparison to other experiences in the area (Boston). Whereas the other puzzle in the Boston area that I experienced only included one room, that was not the case here (I won't say more than that!). On the con side: clues came too quickly, often times it was not clear what information went with which puzzle/padlock/etc. I do think that would be relatively easy to fix. Even a small purple dot on the lock and near the number would give you the ability to match number to number lock. You could then add an extra step (like actually figuring out the number combination) to make up for the time lost by not having to try every available lock. The biggest criticism for me is that there were bottlenecks where you couldn't advance until you finished one puzzle. In casino, without going into details, the puzzles were fun and actually did feel well themed, but you had to complete one before you could move on to the next, which left part of the group standing around much of the time. A few tweaks to make two different puzzles valid and playable basically at all times, would help that pacing. Even if the last puzzle at the end was a final bottle neck, that would be okay because it's the finisher. Overall, I couldn't really give a lower rating than four. I was excited throughout the experiences, I had a great time and I want other people to enjoy these rooms as well. Due to the relative quality and the fun I had, I'll give it a 5 for now, tentatively, though I may make it a 4 once more reviews come in. read more

Christopher explained everything perfectly before we went in and helped us when we were stuck in order to get out before the 60 minutes was up. My group finished Heist at 49:24, and Casino at 52:47. I'll start with the positives. Both GMs we had were wonderful. This company has clearly gone out of their way to place cameras, microphones, and speakers everywhere, and the GMs were very responsive to needs/questions. These rooms hosted two very creative puzzles I had not seen before. I don't want to spoil them, but if the owner were to message me privately, I have no problem with sharing more specific feedback =). The research and logical deduction set of puzzles (and premise) in Casino was really, really great, and I wish more games would have research puzzles like that. The Casino room also incorporated a lot of math, which might be a plus or a minus. My group was six historians, a salesperson, and a kindergarten teacher. We did not think the math was hard, but it was a lot. Now, for the bad. First, I thought that the GMs were much too quick to give clues, oftentimes when we weren't even struggling. I'm sure part of that is just to do with growing pains and getting situated. It's not a big deal, just something to keep in mind. My biggest criticism is that the puzzles were not holistically integrated into the plot, even the really creative puzzles that each room had. I really enjoyed the puzzles, but they didn't seem well placed in these stories. At the same time, WAY too many combination locks. This isn't 2015 anymore. We should not still have so many combination locks that every time we get a four digit combination, we have to try it in more than one place. That's lazy, to me. And the blacklights. I won't say anymore on this point, but two very creative puzzles, and the rest were very meh in my opinion. Also. The Casino puzzles were very linear. Players could only do so much at one time. I'm not a fan of that. The room bottle-necked, which broke the momentum at times. Boston is so weak on really great Escape Rooms. These are just okay. Significantly better than some, not terrible, but not amazing. I really enjoy Escape Rooms that cross with immersive theater. My favorite room to date--which my GM Kevin was actually very interested in--is Paradiso in New York. I understand that some people enjoy puzzles more than plot. I understand that live actors is expensive. I understand that the industry is still evolving. But whether live actors are pragmatic or not, Paradiso is an example of a game where the plot is important, and the puzzles are holistically incorporated into that plot. Every puzzle makes sense for where you are. That's where I would like to see most Escape Rooms go. And considering the lack of really great rooms in the Boston area, I think that Breakout Boston had a great opportunity, and, unfortunately, while these rooms were not bad, they did not live up to my expectations. read more

I was skeptical that this would be frustrating and not fun, but I was so very wrong. This was AWESOME. It's definitely better with more people, we had 5 in our group, and I think that's a perfect number. The clues are difficult to find, but it's so rewarding when you actually figure it out. I felt like Sherlock Holmes. The rooms are very cleverly set up, sometimes there are hidden rooms within your room that you have to open. The hour flew by. We did have to ask for more than a few hints, but I liked that the game masters would help let you know you're on the right track with something, but wouldn't outright tell you the answer. It was a great way to keep us on track, yet still made us feel like we were solving it ourselves (which is a lie because we needed a lot of clues...) The staff was super friendly and helpful. We left Breakout Games with a smile on all our faces. I really loved it! What a great concept. One thing to note, is its kinda hard to find. It's in the way back of the office park. It took us a little but to find it. But I guess, if you're going to solve the clues of the room, finding the actual building of Breakout Games should be the easy part. :) I look forward to doing another one of these in the future. read more

Amy was our game master . She gets a 5 out of 5 in my book. The experience was a lot of fun. My only two issues is that I feel that people should get a little more time to complete the puzzle (hence the 4 out of 5). My sister and I did the museum heist room which was really cool. I loved that this place allowed participants to get clues without deducing time off-For the price that we paid , it would have been annoying if they had done that. Finding the facility was a bit hard but not impossible ..if you really can't find it just give them a call (it's right next to Sono Bello) . Over all I highly recommend this particular facility! I've done Escape the Room twice in NYC and I have to say that this was the best experience by far. All of the staff was courteous, personable, kind and energetic. The room was updated and set up cleverly. Don't be discouraged by the location (since it may be a little confusing to find it since it's in a building complex). This was our first escape room and we had a blast!!! It was challenging but not frustrating. With all 8 of us, we didn't escape the Museum Heist :( but we all still had a blast and want to do another one. Also, TV was way too long that we couldn't hear the hints towards the end. Only down fall was it was pretty hard to find... We looked for Bella Corpo (which one of that staff kindly told me in the voicemail the day before) and it was right next to it. Definitely very tricky, but overall a super fun time with friends! I won't spoil anything, but I'll say this: DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP! We very nearly didn't make it because *somebody* in our group refused to let us ask for help, which cost us a lot of time. But the atmosphere is great, the rooms are much nicer than your standard fare, and the staff are all super nice -shoutout to Nacho, our super cool Game Meister!- and you can just tell there's a lot of love in that place. We've done puzzle-type places before, but really liked this one! I thought it would be frustrating, but it wasn't. Some of the other places either have things that are way too easy, or you feel like you hit a brick wall and made no progress at all. Our group of five ( we were the only ones in our group) ranged in age from 12 to 47. I wasn't sure we'd find something we all could enjoy, but we did. Someone else in our group had picked the room, and we were doing the museum one. I didn't have high expectations, but I was very pleasantly surprised. We all had a great time, and look forward to doing it again. The guide (Amanda I think?) was outstanding and made us feel like we were her only customer that day. She interacted with us and was ready to help if got stuck. So was very personable when we finished - we didn't feel like just a number. read more

Recently did the kidnapping situation with a few friends. Overall everything was amazing... the puzzles where challenging but not impossible, always interesting, and there where enough that you where in no danger of finishing within twenty minutes. Our GM, Peter, was also very nice and helpful and whenever we needed help was quick to offer us clues (including pointing out when we did extremely simple math wrong) without giving away the full extent of the puzzle. read more

The only reason I didn't give this 5 was I thought it was kind of pricey. We did the Runaway Train room. It was entertaining! A good combo of "physical" and mental challenges.
