We enrolled at North Valley Christian Academy expecting a Christ-centered environment built on…read moretrust, transparency, and partnership with parents. Our experience was the complete opposite. Our primary concern is student privacy and administrative overreach. During our time at NVCA, we witnessed: * Private student conversations being overheard and later referenced by administrators * A lack of respect for parent involvement when our child was emotionally distressed * A troubling culture of surveillance and control rather than trust and care In addition to these issues, we raised multiple safeguarding and conduct concerns to administration that were never meaningfully addressed, including: * Coaches speaking to teenage girls in demeaning and derogatory ways * Inappropriate one-on-one conversations during athletic evaluations unrelated to performance * A coach refused to let our daugher leave a room for 10 minutes against her will and pleas for her parents * Requests for written policies governing athletics, discipline, and parental communication that were never provided The most alarming incident occurred after our daughter resigned from cheer due to how she was being treated. Principal Jason Mitchell hired someone to locate and secretly video record our minor child at a weekend club volleyball tournament -- off campus, outside of school hours, without our knowledge or consent. (Chris Schoenleb, Head of School denies this despite the email from Jason Mitchell being attached to this review and he was cc'd on the original email). This had nothing to do with safety, academics, or behavior. It was clearly used to justify a decision that had already been made. Our daughter had no disciplinary record, no probation, and was never warned her enrollment was at risk. Despite this, the school later discussed our family via email to all 800+ NVCA Families while refusing to identify any written policy we allegedly violated or responding to us. Since then, NVCA has implemented policies locking students' phones in Yondr bags throughout the school day, preventing private parent-child communication. Given our experience, this raises serious concerns about control versus care. Also, random drug testing is common and done without parental notification and consent by Jason Mitchell. We are sharing this so other parents -- especially those expecting integrity from a Christian school -- will ask questions, request written policies, and fully understand the culture they are placing their children into. Our family did not leave quietly because what happened should never happen to another child.

Kathy and Steve and all of the teachers are super supportive of the kids, both inside and out of the classroom. I've even seen them support their students at their Battle of the Bands concerts and also when they set up businesses at farmer's markets. I've seen them support students when they're interested in starting charity drives at school. They really listen to the kids' interests and support their learning through fun and engaging projects. They're not just a school. They're a community that helps these kids become their best selves both inside and out of the classroom. Montessori Day School is where I went to grade school. During my time there, we consistently scored…read morevery high on state and national academic tests. We were taught honesty, compassion, personal strength and accountability. I was lucky enough in 8th grade to score at a 12th grade reading level, and a 10th grade math level. My scores were *not* special compared with my fellow students. I don't have kids, but my friends went on to send their children to MDS and were quite happy they did. I have continued to maintain some contact with the community and staff over the years. (it was an important place to me) and though some of the the people and practices have changed to match the times, it's clear to me MDS has remained committed to those core Montessori values and continues to offer an excellent education. There is just one thing about the Montessori Method. To work well it needs parents who are willing to _actually parent_ their children and who are in a place to take an active role in their child's development, both in celebrating their successes and clearly perceiving where their child needs to put effort into growing and learning... because children are *always* growing and learning. Every moment of life is an educational one. Of note - There are a couple reviews here that feel as though the person in question more interested in having the MDS do the schooling, the parenting, everything. Children do best when parents are willing to put in the work with Montessori. Beats all other educational systems IMO!

My Kindergartener has far exceeded the expectations of that grade level in the schools I have taught. My kids love going to school and participating in the variety of after-school and summer programs. This school has a dedicated and highly trained staff with virtually no turn over or inconsistencies. You will be lucky if they have space as their enrollment grows due to word of mouth of their exceptional services. If you truly know education and what environments foster the personal and academic growth of children, you will not be disappointed in this school!

This year, Lookout Mountain opened their brand-new, state-of-the-art elementary school, ending the…read more40-year history of the previous building, which was long overdue for a face lift. This school is very unique and classy. The playground areas are much bigger and expansive than before and more areas for the children to play and get their daily exercise and fresh air. The parking lot is all re-designed with much more parking space and area for teachers and visitors coming to the school. If I have done one thing right in my life, it was choosing to move to Moon Valley in 1992 so my kids had the opportunity to attend Lookout Mountain!! Both of my children went to this school for K through 6th grade. Their experience was phenomenal. My wife was a former teacher who stayed home with our kids. Her experience with the teachers, the admin staff, the cross walk guards, the janitors, the volunteers and everyone associated with this school was great. Their classes, the dedication of the teachers and support staff for after school events and community functions were all great. My kids have tremendous memories and experiences all through their years at LM. I was very fortunate to get to be involved with the school in many ways and with my kids' fellow students through coaching them and seeing them daily around the community. These great kids are a reflection of their fantastic involved parents, their tremendous teachers and the people who work and volunteer at Lookout Mountain. This school is the cornerstone of the Moon Valley community and not because they have a very nice new building. It's the people that leave that building every day that make it what it is. Many of those people are volunteers who support this school like very few others. The community pride here permeates everything. I still live in the neighborhood and both of my kids have graduated from college. This school set the stage for them to get into very prestigious high schools and the universities of their choice with substantial scholarships. They both graduated at the top of their classes and are pursuing their dreams professionally. This school was the base for everything they have accomplished. I am hopeful my grand kids have an opportunity to go to Lookout Mountain. Many of our neighbors' kids go to Lookout Mountain and by all accounts its as good as it ever was. We are truly lucky to have this school in Moon Valley and I guess if I have to wait 10 minutes so one of the volunteers can get the information they might need, I will do it with a huge smile on my face.

Parents of girls, please be aware…read more In our experience, our daughter reported behavior by a teacher that made her uncomfortable and that we believed was inappropriate. We brought these concerns to the school administration. We were deeply disappointed by how the situation was handled. Shawn Bell did not take action in a way we felt protected our daughter or addressed similar concerns raised by other students. To our knowledge, the teacher remained employed at the time we withdrew our children. Because of this experience and the school's response, our family chose not to continue enrollment.

The Gettysburg and White House Dinner reenactment were fabulous! It's the 8th grade program that left a bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe it's the fact that Mrs. Kendrick the school principal retired and the school's feel changed. But I don't feel my son had any growth during the second year. I knew once Mr. Shappee left that there was no way my other son would go here. I saw major bullying at this school as well, among other issues. My son enjoyed seventh grade here, went to Costa Rica for 10 days which he will cherish forever but I really feel that PVUSD just isn't what it could be or has been in years past. Sad really.
