I highly recommend using a doula! Having another expert in the room to help advocate for your wishes while you can fully focus on labor was a huge help! My birth team was Jaymie and Tori, who were wonderful. They met with me in my home several weeks before delivery to go over my wishes & concerns as well as teaching us about what to expect, pain management options, how my husband can help. They even helped us with logistics, such as coming up with a plan to care for our dog and making sure we have a meal plan for postpartum. Jaymie was present during my delivery. She arrived at the hospital quickly and jumped in to support us right away. Not only did she advocate on my behalf while I stayed focused on my breathing, she also helped my husband and guide him in how to best support me during my (unplanned) unmedicated delivery. Quick Answer: Yes, get a doula! Long review: I'm about 3mo PP with my 2nd baby and recalling my experience with "Breath" makes me feel so grateful. My doula team was Meg & Hayley. And every step of the experience with them was more than I expected. -Before Birth they hold a group class. I guess it's more geared for 1st time parents. But nothing wrong with a refresher. It also helped to connect in person with the ladies since our first contact was via face time. I was planning a VBAC and my OB/GYN was not that supportive or rather didn't believed that I would be successful, but said "you can try". Meg & Hayley understood the concerns, but still were encouraging! Made me feel empowered to do what I wanted. Also a couple weeks before my due date We had an in-home visit to chat and get to know each other. -While in labor: They were quickly responsive by phone and text. Meg met us at the hospital and of course she helped with the laboring stuff but mostly I was able to relax and not worry about anything else but myself. I delivered at Sharp Grossmont, and being in the hospital there are a lot of alarms and noise going on. Having Meg there allowed me to wear noise canceling headphones listen to music and rest. Meanwhile Meg helped give my partner suggestions/directions and even communicated with the nursing staff on my behalf. Tori helped save our birth experience. As first time parents, we had planned for an unmedicated vaginal delivery. Our birth plan went up in flames over the course of 4 days but ultimately we were able to deliver vaginally which may not have been possible without Tori's support, guidance, and expertise! When my husband and I found out we were pregnant with our second baby, we were committed to having a much different birth and postpartum experience than we did with our first in 2020, which was challenging due to the pandemic and a traumatic birth. We talked to many doulas throughout San Diego but Breathe, Bitch (Haley in particular!) came highly recommended to us by a mutual friend. After the first consultation call, I knew it was the right fit. Haley has such a warm, kind, and welcoming demeanor. We didn't decide we were going to hire a Doula until 30 something weeks in but she was so great at ensuring that we still got a few sessions in before delivery and we're well prepared with a plan. This was incredibly helpful as first time parents despite having read all the books and taking all the classes, we still found ourselves in the moment day-of being so grateful to have someone there that we could turn to when the doctor was asking us how we wanted to proceed. The week leading up to going into active labor it was also such a relief to be able to text someone and ask if cramps I was feeling were contractions; she was always so great at keeping calm and guiding me through what to expect. I would 100% recommend this especially if the people you have in your life are mainly parents or others that haven't experienced pregnancy in the last few decades. We walked through our birth plan with her well in advance so that she could get a good sense of what we were comfortable with and this made a huge difference when we were at the hospital because when the doctors asked us if we wanted certain medication or not I could just look over at her and she could give me a subtle nod or headshake based off of what she knew we wanted to do. You wouldn't believe the kind of pressure you will feel when a doctor is trying to get you to do some thing and you're not sure if it's exactly what you want to do. Also I think one of the most helpful parts of the delivery process were the different positions she help put me in. I delivered at UCSD Jacob's Medical Center and everybody there was well trained and educated and very open to the different positions Haley and I wanted to try. Ultimately, one of the positions she suggested only required one push and the baby was out. I got an epidural which some people think really limits your mobility but Haley was on top of it, instructing my husband and the nurses on how to assist and getting in there herself!
