Breed & Co is one of those true Austin staples I never get tired of. It's the kind of place you walk into for one thing and end up wandering around way longer than planned--in the best way. The garden center is always a highlight, and being an Ace Hardware means they somehow have every random item you didn't even know you needed. The sale table is dangerously good... I always end up grabbing something for "next year." The staff are consistently helpful without being pushy, which makes the whole experience easy and enjoyable. And yeah--the treats at the front are a nice bonus. Honestly, just a great, feel-good spot to get lost in for a bit. Hard not to walk out with the one thing you needed...so be warned!! read more

I was on a mad hunt for a particular plant pot that I had in my head. Sadly, Breed & Company didn't have it. But, that's ok because they had a ton of other stuff I didn't know I needed and bought. Think hardware store meets Bed, Bath, & Beyond (remember that place?). Gadgets as far as the eye can see. Tools as far as the eye can see. It's really a one-stop shop for household repairs, DIY, decorating, etc. Get your drywall, paint, brushes, and new home accessories all at once. I just really dig the old schooly vibes of this shop. The ambiance is totally throwing it out there. I think the pricing is fair and I found the service to be pleasant and informative. read more

What an interesting place. Came looking for a specific oil for an antique fan and while I didn't find that, Eric and Phill were great. Eric assisted me with trying to find said oil and then Phill was brought in for ordering online to have in store the following week. I initially thought this was an Ace Harware store which is part of it with the other part similar to a Williams Sonoma with kitchen, glasswear, candles, wrapping paper and much more. Spent about 30-45 min walking around. The great customer service for assisting with the item I needed gave a lot of value to the store along with the item matching the price seen online. Only area for opportunity is the outdoor garden area. Definitely has seen better days. The order did come in the following week and instead of the store calling on Wed/Thu, I called on Friday to confirm. Jeff hunted the item down and I was able to pickup on Saturday. I'll keep this place in mind for hardware store needs as well as decoration/small housewares. read more

Always impressed by with how Breed & Co stays constant with both price and service. I'm so grateful that a place like this exists so close to where I live, going inside of a Lowes or Home Depot is always so much work. The massive parking lot, insanely large store and massive number of customers is always such a turn for those bigger locations Not here, they have absolutely everything you need without the headache or hassle. How is it possible that I haven't written a review for this place?! Seriously...did mine get deleted? So weird. I love this place. I will say...there have been changes that are noticeable since the Breed family sold it, but overall, it's still got a unique and cool thing going. I jokingly say there are "his and hers" sides to it... tools and home fixing "stuff" one way and anything and everything shiny the other way. The paint mixing folks here are next level amazing. They also know more than the average person on the tool side. Just think of the idiots you deal with when you go into a big box store....not here. They actually know what they're doing. On the other side I can broadly say any kind of houseware you'd ever want...from gorgeous china to all the "dust collecting" items you can imagine. They also have really special or unique gifts. They also have a lawn and garden section. That is more of an afterthought...in my opinion. I wouldn't go here with a huge plan for buying plants. But, they can get you any type of garden implement, fertilizer or basic pesticide you might need. read more

They didn't have the product. That part was okay. But then i violated the Proj. 2025 code by mentioning that they'd sold me a crappy wheelbarrow with a tire that went flat sans any weight at all beyond air placed on it when not in use. As i told Mr. Mansplainer, i wasn't looking for a refund. Breed & Co used to be the kind of place that cared about the quality of products they sell. NOT ANY MORE. Years ago I used to live fairly near this business and would stop in from time to time, but it's been about 20 years since I've walked through the door. I was desperately in need of a particular wrench and they had it. I was also very pleasantly surprised that they actually sell craftsman tools here instead of that cheap Chinese crap that you find at Harbor freight. This is definitely an upscale hardware store, but it is a lot more than that. They have pretty much everything imaginable from air filters, house paint, power tools, fancy glassware, and even a gourmet candy case at the checkout. There's so much to see here that there's no way I could truly capture it all on film. If you have not been here, you really need to visit this "more than a hardware" store. The prices are a little higher than your average Home Depot, but then again, they are in the midst of a very dense urban area. I'll definitely be paying them more visits in the future. read more

I have shopped as a professional for years at this location..but recently shopped in the Port Aransas location and realized just how nice the Port A store location staff is..and how rude and entitled the management in this Austin location are! I've experienced it for many years, and got used to it..until I experienced an Ace with heart..who actually cares about their clients! I simply tried to return an item from the store in Port A, here in Austin..and even verified I could when I purchased it in Port A. They Said yes..and that they are all owned under Ace. Unfortunately the Austin manager said NO we are not, and WE ARE BREED! Like they are better than an Ace. And was very Ryde about the situation. This to me a 5 star business owner for 20+ yrs, and I NEVER treat a client like that or I won't stay in business! Unfortunately this manager behaves as if he's untouched. Hence my review..he's not! I'm conclusion, I called the Ace in Port A..theybwere so nice and couldn't believe how Breed treated me! So much so they said just keep your reciept..and when you come back down to our island..we will be glad to take the item back (a $40 value) and even saved my info in their system. He even said you have the reciept that says Ace on it..it's not like you stole it! The manager in Austin didn't care 1%, hence why he's receiving a 1 star! I never treat a client like he treated me, and never will. He obviously needs to be let go as he's not a people person working in a customer service type job. Sad situation. I really love this hardware/housewares store. It's incredibly unique in that you can get your hardware, walk across the other side of the store and register for your wedding! They have stunning China and fine dining whether you are picking out your first set or your last. They have candles, scents, kitchen needs, and more. Their housewares department is not for the casual cook. This is definitely where I go to buy gifts or real staples for my kitchen because all of the items are so nice - which means it's not cheap! I love this store so much. I've purchased so many things over the years for friends, family, or myself. Each item in my home I still love. Weird customer service experience today. Asked an woman employee with short gray hair maybe in her late fifties to find something I didn't know the name of but described it. Shot me down real quick and wasn't very helpful. Seemed like she didn't want to help and gave off a very odd and rude vibe. The store was good though. Just not good customer service. Thursday, we saw this chime hanging at Breed. When we addressed it with some one who works there, they seemed surprised stating "you are right,that looks like a swastika" and took it down. Today, my girlfriend was there and it was still up. Again, she took it up to some one who works there and was told that they had a meeting this morning about it and they all decided that it is actually a Buddhist symbol and not a swastika. Another woman working there joined the conversation and reiterated that it is not a swastika. Woman #1 said she was going to put it back (noted that it was "beautiful"), and then woman #2 said "maybe we should just put it in the office instead.." This is indeed not a nazi swastika, but it can be mistaken for one. The second a costumer brought up similarities it should have been removed from the shelves out of fear of offending someone or being associated with the hatred signified by the nazi swastika. If people can mistake this for such an offensive symbol do not put it up in the first place. I'm posting this in horror of Breed's response when it was brought to their attention and the fact that they had a meeting this morning and decided that it is appropriate to sell. read more

Enjoy being interrupted by another older male customer while you are talking to the sales clerk, and have that sales clerk turn and talk to that guy instead, while you wait, invisible and patiently waiting for the men to be done talking. Have something that requires additional help? Enjoy being scolded as the sales clerk complains that he was just about to leave for home but now he has to help you. I used to go to Breed & Co almost exclusively (when possible). Generally, Ace stores have super helpful staff. Prices may be a bit higher but worth it. Here some staff are super helpful but many are not. I've called to ask about products and told they had it only to arrive and hear they haven't had it in weeks. Returns and Ace Rewards have always been a challenge. Last weekend I purchased a blade for my mower and grabbed the wrong size. When I returned it for a smaller blade I owed more money. Seemed odd so it questioned it. He just said it was the brand. When I got home I looked at my receipt and noticed they removed the coupon I used to buy it but the coupon was a straight $$ off any purchase (not subject to brand, price etc). Contacted the company a week ago and still no response I think I am done and will just head back to Lowes read more

Old-fashioned hardware store in Austin. I cannot sing enough praise. Manager Mike donated 4 boxes of net lights to complete a civic service project when I explained to him what happened. This is after Ace Corporate told me (in over 1.5 hours of phone calls) that a fine print disclaimer online states Ace cannot be held responsible for incorrect product descriptions. (WHAT ??!!!) And, they did not seek to reward me in any way for bringing the wrong description to the attention of Ace Corporate. Several months ago I purchased enough Christmas net lights to cover some bushes based on "4 x 6" description on website. And, it had a jumper wire on each one. When I installed the week before Thanksgiving, I was significantly short for finishing project. I looked at small font on box. 4 foot x 4.75 foot. !!!!!! The time and energy spent on phone calls was all for naught. I phoned Breed Hardware, my friendly local Ace Hardware store. Manager Mike was genuinely sorry for what I'd gone through, which was in no way the fault of Breed Hardware. He offered to basically donate the boxes I needed to finish the project. Immediately, I'm writing this review. I'm so relieved. So happy. WHAT an old-fashioned hardware store. Thanks, Manager Mike and Breed Hardware. All the staff in the store were very helpful and patient. This Breed and Company had all three items I was searching for and staff even showed me where all the items were. It's an interesting layout. 2/3 of the store had a more industrial and practical feel but then you pass the northeast section of the store and feel like it could be a luxury soft goods store. Breed is a community institution. Can we talk about Phil in the hardware and fastener section? Phil, you are the reason I won't go anywhere else. This man can tell a 6mm screw pitch from a 1/4-20. You don't go to Breed to buy a screw, you go to Breed to shop "Phil's curated screw collection". As long as Breed keeps Phil around to sell me screws $0.32 at a time I will keep encouraging my wife to go in there and buy $100 dinner plates. It is up to us, the customers, to keep this place in business. Go there and buy something that makes you smile today. I come here whenever I can, even though there are three big-box hardware stores that are closer to me. The workers here are really helpful, very friendly, and have most of the things you would really ever need. Things I have purchased here: different varieties of linked chain sold by the foot, cargo straps, wood varnish, packing tape, painter's tape, tape dispensers, epoxy glue. Even though the selection is objectively smaller, I found exactly what I needed and it worked out great. One time I needed to buy a roll of R30 attic insulation, and they didn't have that. No space for it, they said. I laughed and proceeded to the big box store, but I'll always come back to Breed & Co when I can. read more

I've been coming here since like 2015 and I've enjoyed pretty much all my visits here. I enjoy browsing after I get what I need in the hardware section and I often ended up buying more than I intended because there's something new to find pretty often, especially when they put up their seasonal displays. I used to work at a cafe serving customers in my undergrad years and would get money tips basically just for being nice. The staff here are both nice and knowledgeable, and I hope they get paid well for what they do. At the very least i hope management sees this and gives credit where credit is due. Melanie in gardening, especially, has helped me with my plants, going as far as putting them in the container I bought along with my fern. There was another miss in gardening who helped me with my succulent and seemed to enjoy making my plant look pretty, so I appreciate the people who enjoy their work. It goes a long way in terms of adding to the customer experience. By the way, I am sorry to say I did not get the name of the employee I just mentioned. I've attached pictures of some of my purchases and I often get complimented for how I've set up my room, so I'm writing this review now to give some credit to Breed and Company. It also shows i actually buy stuff there, even though there are days when i just go there to eat their popcorn and browse. It really is nice to be able to get everything I need so close by. I'm also writing a review for 1-Up Repairs as it is places like these that make living so close to downtown great and add to the Austin experience. I know my neighbors in Hyde Park shop here regularly as well, so you know Breed and Company is the place where classy people get their everyday household needs. read more

Do not go in expecting to be treated like a regular ol customer ! They literally treat you like family here and the customer service is fast, easy, and helpful. The entire store is set up beautifully and is really organized ! I came in to buy duct clamps for my dryer and thought I'd spend an eternity finding it but before I had the chance to get overwhelmed I was helped out and directed to my item (this took about one minute at most). The plant/pottery section is amazing and you can find just about anything you could imagine you'd need for your hardware and appliance needs ! And although it is Covid times they are still smiling beneath their masks ! I highly recommend shopping here. read more

HISPANICS BEWARE! The first time I went in there I fell in love with ALL of their Christmas stuff. I thought "imma come here more often!" But then I got a call from my mom and I answered the phone in Spanish and continued to speak to her in Spanish. While I was on the phone with my mom, I noticed that a worker began to follow me around the store. He pretended he was switching out price tags the entire time. I'm not stupid, I knew exactly what he was doing. I would have left if I didn't already have a few items picked out that I absolutely loved. Something has changed over the last few years. Breeds used to be the place to go, with helpful employees who would help you and explain why you needed what you needed. When I go there now, The atmosphere seems more tense and employees don't spend as much time with customers. I phoned one day to ask a question and the employee sounded like she couldn't wait to get me off the phone. If you ever wanted to know where one could purchase a $700 Jay Strongwater picture frame and a common garden hose under the same roof, consider this the answer. Long heralded by family and acquaintances as "the fancy hardware store near campus", Breed & Co. has long been ignored by yours truly, seeing as I wasn't quite sure even what a hardware store was until 2002. When they said "fancy", I wasn't sure if they meant that they sold bejeweled leaf blowers and only "top shelf" insect repellent, but this Christmas 2011, it all came full circle and their meaning is clear. Always on a push to shop local, I made an impromptu pilgrimage with Mom to have a gander and see if we couldn't find some last minute gifts and/or stocking stuffers. We began by perusing the frames to see if there were any suitable for a wedding portrait. A woman who worked there showed us the area and then left us to it; the perfect balance of helpful, not pushy. We didn't find the frame, but we found a whole bunch of fun, colorful red and white ceramics and dishes that would be perfect for Christmas. Also, we began to notice a theme of cute, UT Longhorn collectibles (e.g. crystal longhorns) that I imagine would be absolutely perfect gifts from parents to their new students when they came to visit. For my brother, we found a magnifying glass that would be a nice decoration for his desk. My next inquiry was into a small cheese cleaver, but I found a cute cheese knife set I wanted for myself, and they also had some small wooden spoons for a charcutarie platter similar to the ones we had seen at Vince Young Steakhouse; I bought them for when they create their own on the platter I'd already purchased for them. There were also an assortment of distressed, decorative tiles for a kitchen, and I found the last one with a colorful peacock motif. I couldn't help but roll my eyes when my mom instinctively asked if we could find one without a chip in it; I reminded her, like certain designer jeans that came pre-ripped, the chips were supposed to be there to give it character. We had a laugh. For the chef Breed is an absolute wonderland, with eye candy and bright colors in every direction, including the vast selection of Le Creuset cookware. Every kitchen gadget worth its salt from prep bowls and can openers, to waffle makers and your favorite Kitchen Aid mixers were all available to those blessed with the talent to work magic in the kitchen. It almost made me want to take up cooking. Almost. Their selection of knives was most impressive, although Neal and Lisa had already received their fair share of high end knives from the wedding, including a Japanese set that are so exclusive (and so mindbogglingly sharp), the instruction manual on how to clean, care, and utilize them made me believe they could probably fatally cut you by just looking at them. The home decor is where I felt transported to a little slice of Neiman Marcus. Think the aforementioned Jay Strongwater frames, Nambe vases, Lenox china, and a whole sparkling cornucopia of shiny baubles. If this is where your priorities lie, by all means...buy the premium goods from the local merchant. All Christmas decor was 30% off at the time (just a few days before Christmas), and my favorites were of course the ornaments by Christopher Radko (I already have a small collection I started while in college). I almost bought a purple gingerbread house one, but realized it clashed with everything on my tree. Maybe next year, if I redo the color scheme. I heard somewhere they offered a bridal registry, which hardly came as a surprise, as so much of what was offered seemed very wedding gift-y to me. Just to be nosy, I looked up some couples' registries under the name "Smith". Jesus, how many $150 Baccarat tumblers does one need? It seemed a little "War of the Roses", if you ask me. Greedy "Smiths", whoever they are. We finally stopped off at the chocolate counter, where I put together a box of extra large truffles that included milk chocolate, double dark chocolate, and espresso. Mom and I shamelessly devoured their version of a peanut butter cup right out front in the car. The woman assisting us even offered to wrap the box in a red bow, which was a cute touch. The guy checking us out appeared about as aware as the metal tools that they sell in the hardware part of the store, but he wasn't rude or anything. I noticed they offered gift wrap, something stores have begun to phase out these days. I found out later the truffles are actually the exact same as the ones at Big Top Candy Shop, as they utilize the same wholesaler. Either way, those are some damn good truffles. As far as our visit went, it was quite pleasant. I see a lot of people also had positive experiences with the "butcher side of Breed's" in the hardware departments, which was one aspect we skipped. All in all, I'd say it was a charming store, with charming items, with a charming premise. 5 Stars. read more

Was trying to get my car keys copied, but they also were chip keys. I called to see if they did that and they said "yes, we have someone who can do that. He works tomorrow." Great. I go in, ask for this man, he wasn't there. Some said lunch break, others said he just went home for the day. But apparently, no one other than him knew how to copy chip keys, so I left, It was this back snd forth of calling, showing up, and chip key guy not being there. At some point I didn't even know if he existed. This was all a while ago, but recently my boyfriend went in to try to get his chip keys copied, and again was told that there was only one person doing it but they weren't in that day. Seems like none of them know how to copy keys, so they just make up some rando who just so happens to be "off" when someone asks about him. Crazy. Maybe train more people?? read more

It's a peculiar animal, this Breed & Co., at least in the sense that traditionally, the ying perhaps being the atypical hardware store, with more of what appears to be carefully handpicked building stuffs wrought with forethought, and the yang the more ornate, boutique gifts and more that find themselves arranged floor to ceiling (almost) on the other side. What seems to draw the two together (well, other than the fact that they're part of the same business) is an attention to detail: I was asked twice in the span of a couple of minutes wandering around the hardware side if I needed help, and not in an intrusive way. They seemed genuinely curious, genuinely eager to add a personal touch. That was nice. And on the boutique side, I was really impressed by the wide and creative array of goods here. I was on a specific quest on this day, and they didn't quite have what I needed at the price point I was after, so I had to take a proverbial powder and head on down the road. But I can totally see where the myriad five star reviews rain down: these guys work hard to be different...and just hopefully, original. read more

Absolutely wonderful service. I unfortunately waited until the last minute to purchase an anniversary gift for my wife only to discover that most stores do not maintain stock on the gift that I wanted. When I called Breed & Company, they were nice enough to take a description of what I was looking for, check their stock, and call me back to let me know that they had put aside two options for me. I came into the store a few hours later, saw that one of the options was exactly what I was looking for and considerably lower in price than I expected. To top if off, they were able to gift wrap the piece with gorgeous paper and a beautiful hand-tied bow for a super low price. I expected the gift wrap to cost about three times what they charged, and seeing the results I would have been happy to pay it. Overall, an excellent experience with the staff going above and beyond to provide wonderful service. read more

Current manager - arrogantly wrong. At first ring up of purchases, the total was 75% over what it should have been (sale items were rung up at full price even though I reminded casher that all were sale items at 75% off and he had been with me when I was loading up my basket). So the friendly cashier immediately asked for help from the manager who, item by item, rung me up again following the old receipt. While time consuming, I figured he couldn't figure out a faster way to do it and patiently waited. Still, at the final total, I was startled and suggested the total was still off. The manager said he was sure it was 100% correct, that maybe I hadn't considered taxes. I said that couldn't be correct and wanted to check the receipt before I left. He strode off to his office saying I was wrong. Nonetheless I reviewed the receipt at the cashier's station and found out where I was overcharged. Items I had told the manager I didn't want because, though they were in the sale location, they weren't included. He even took them back and relocated them away from the sale table, but still left the charges. The first cashier agreed and corrected it. I understand people make errors. It happens, particularly when so few excel in math. But for the manager to arrogantly walk off without exploring a possible issue having to do with overcharging - that's not cool at all. It was made worse when I was told through another person who shops there that if I ever showed up in his store again, I was to be kicked out immediately. I think this is because I dared to go back to tell him (quietly) about the mistake, just so he'd know one was indeed made and that maybe he should have "heard" rather than ignored me. This place is awesome! I needed a new transponder key for my truck. The Nissan dealership wanted about $150 to cut and program a new key, the locksmiths quoted $110-115. Robert cut and programmed the key for about $50. The store has a wide variety of hardware and home goods and more importantly wonderful customer service! Breed continues to amaze me with the best customer service ever. This time Sandra was extremely helpful with a Nesspresso dilema and may have saved our Christmas. Thanks again so much! read more

The Good: :: it's actually a hardware store (Ace Hardware) and a fancy store (Breed & Company). you can buy things you need like screws, nails, air filters, light bulbs, shower curtains, etc, and also shop for things like colanders, cutting boards, glasses, and such. nice to be able to one-stop shop :: cute outdoor selection of various plants and flowers :: the people that work there are very knowledgeable, albeit grumpy :: small but sufficient. they sell things you would actually use, like barbecue grills and accessories, mailboxes, mops, trash cans, pots and pans, wine bottle openers, etc. terrific!!! :: the location. it's tucked away off of 29th and guadalupe, and there is plenty of parking available :: the Breed & Company side offers very fancy gift wrapping for a small price The Bad: :: the Ace Hardware side is kind of tight to maneuver around. very very tight aisles. :: the Breed & Company side can be expensive The Ugly: :: none. Would I go back? Definitely. I no longer need to go to places like Home Depot or Lowe's since I've found Breed & Company. I love love love LOVE Breed and Company! You are a customer where customer service still exists - FABULOUS customer service! If you have an older house and think you'll never find a replacement for that thing-a-mi-jig - it's here! And oh my! They have to coolest stuff... it's like a toy joy for those that love to do home improvement and such. On one side is that, on the other is a world of goodies and ooh and ahhs.
