I stopped into Callahan's for a random reason: because Webkinz are back? As an avid collector as a kid, I had to grab one to relive my childhood my parents raised me on. They had a pretty decent stock as elsewhere has been selling rapidly. There's a lot going on at Callahan's as that place is huge. The only issue I had while I was there was there was only one lady working the cash register and there was a good 5+ of us waiting in line at a certain point, and it was moving at a snail's pace. I wish I still had my potbelly piggy, Emma (she was my beloved pet in the 90s). This would be a spot for her to get kibble and other supplies. I like coming here because it's got that old school general store feel. You know, what it must have been like back in the days of cowboys, dirt roads, and small, one-horse towns. They have just about everything from western clothing to hay, hammers, seeds, household stuff, and more. I had been on the search for a specific style of plant pot for an urban garden project I was working on. I searched high & low looking for what I wanted and couldn't find it. That is, until I tried Callahan's. I went in on a whim, not really looking for said pot, but looking around in general. And to my surprise, there it was! The piece I had been looking for. The fluorescent store lighting reflected around it like a glorious and spectacular display, calling my name. "Buy me, Karla, buy me"...and that I did. Obviously, I left happy. Place has farm animals for sale like goats, chicks, rabbits, roosters, chickens. They get baby chicks in every Tues and Thurs. They also sell cowboy hats, boots, and western wear for men and women. There is a huge seed section and some plants outside before you walk in. There is also a home goods sections. My parents have been coming to Callahan's since the 80s and I try to go here when possible for gardening supplies because I want to support a small business, even though it's out of my way. When I went in before asking about grass seed and buying garden supplies, the person at the counter was really nice and walked me through options. This time, not so much. I need to buy a lot of things and chickens for a large garden and was going to buy it here, but they looked at me like I had three heads when I was asking to see a list of what they had available, when this is the only place to get some native types of grass without ordering it online. The customer service is just not great. I had henna on my hand from an event so maybe that was it. read more

I've been going to Callahans for years and I definitely recommend it for anyone. You don't have to be a farmer or only livestock. They have really cool retro style stoves, and fridge options, kitchen gadgets, housewares, clothing, and toys, and a nice hardware section. I loved this store. If I wasn't flying home the next day with carry on luggage I would have purchased a ton of stuff! I was killing some time while my husband napped at the hotel. I stopped in mainly to grab a toy/souvenir for my dog back home. This store had everything! The home decor was awesome and I wish I could have bought it all. There is a rooster just hanging out at the cash register. I also visited a couple animals that were out back for sale. If it was up to me, I would have left with a goat. Went to buy bale of alfalfa . There is a fresh stack of green bales . And there were 2 DRY YELLOW colored bale left from the old batch I guess . I requested if I could get a fresh green bale , I was told owners strictly instructed to sell the old ones first . I requested several times but denied for a fresher bale . I had no choice but to take the old bale because I was very tight on time. . In future I will not go there again . ( I buy any where $1000-$1500. Foe an Austin landmark; leaves much to be desired. Inventory for general store purchases, yet overpriced clothing attire/handbags and garden decor leaves you empty. Clearance applies more when it us under $40 and limited items on men's hats. I guess it is common to no longer get a simple greeting when a customer arrives (since so many other retail related choices throughout Central Texas; a simple "hello" is a simple verbal gesture that the customer chose your store and give you retail sales service). Even at the end of a transaction, a " thank you" would go a long way for repeat business. Whether or not the AC is not "perfect"; the discovery of items throughout the store is the reward. The years are wary on this place and all the geographic changes have added to lessen the appeal of going here again.once for all to venture; while it is still around. read more

If I lived my childhood dream of being a farmer based on playing Harvest Moon, Callahan's would be my primary source of resources needed for my farm animals. Outside of my dream, I come to Callahan's to buy bird pellets in bulk and a dog bone while I'm shopping. Once I'm done locating the wares I need, I go to the back to play with their rabbits and goats. The rabbits are absolutely adorable, and I'm glad to see that the tub they use for the rabbit isn't overcrowded. The chicks on the other hand are stuffed in a dark cage indoors. I can usually see like 50 chicks crammed into one dark cage. I see some chicks trampling over each other for the single water dish in each cage along with dead chicks lying in the cage for who knows how long. The poor brown female goat outside in a cage is always starving for attention, and loves being pet. I would love some attention too if I were constantly impregnated like her. Can't Callahan's get another female goat for breeding instead of using the same mama goat for years? Otherwise I'd still recommend Callahan's for their supplies. I love Callahan's for several reasons. It's like being in a time machine back to the 1940's where General Stores were the central social hub. We buy all our chickens here. My boys love raising them from babies and watching them grow into "Mama Chitch-chens". I buy a good bit of chemicals and fertilizer for work here. Mike is a wealth of information and can answer even the most obscure hypothetical question about chemical usage. Many times I've called him just to talk about a scenario whose answer is not covered under the regulations of my license and he has been correct every time. What an experience visiting Callahan's General Store. We happened to stop in on a Saturday afternoon. There was lovely live music playing. The store itself is stocked with everything you might need to run a most successful homestead operation. Even had a great selection of clothing, footwear (including cowboy boots) and hats! I love Callahan's. Owned by a wonderful family with longstanding roots in the Bastrop, Rockne, and Austin area. One of the family members works with the chicks and was fluent in both English and Spanish. He was very knowledgeable about the different breeds. Last time that I went, they had greatly improved the living conditions of the chicks. read more

I don't know what I'd do without Callahan's. They've been a supportive force in my life for the past four years. Everything you possibly need - they have it. They've helped us with our cat, with pet birds, with farm animals. They're really great folks. You feel cared for and respected with each visit. An example of this caring tendency came up recently when one of my chickens got an eye infection. They helped diagnose the issue over the phone, and when I came into the store led me around so that I could find all the necessary items - syringes, antibiotics, electrolytes. The whole team is knowledgeable and kind. The cherry on top of the whole experience at Callahan's is that their goods are very well priced - but in most instances you cant find a price comparison because they're the only folks who have the stuff you need! If your an outsider or a new comer, I would not RECOMMEND this place. They were very rude and unkind to me. I had never felt so unwelcome and no one was willing to help guide me to where I needed to go. They men in the back with the feed were so very rude. I recently got to visit Callahan's while on a visit to Texas from Florida, and man, what a welcome! My Aunt just knew I would love this spot and boy was she right. As soon as we got into the store, I was shocked at the wide variety of items and the HUGE store interior! We shopped around for a bit and I lucked up on an adorable Texas Passport that I'm certain was meant for kids but whatever! :-P After a bit of browsing, I was in for a special treat; a custom cowboy hat!!  Aunt Judy wanted to make sure that I came back to Florida with a bit of Texas and WOW, what a treat!! After trying on a few hats, we soon came to realize that my head + dreadlocks were NOT going to fit into a hat easily.  The sweet Cashier offered to measure my head/hair and we got the measurement of 7 5/8... and they primarily don't carry that size in the store!  If ever I wanted to shave my head, it was in that moment lol.  But my Aunt and I weren't deterred and continued searching until she came across a perfect, manilla Jason Aldean hat in my size, YEE-HAW!  We took the moment to have the hat steamed and custom fitted to ensure comfort, and she even let me pick out a new pink crystal band to replace the original hatband.  What a lucky chick I am!  After customizing my hat, we were so excited to see the animals!! (Aunt Judy's excitement is sooo contagious lol we were like little kids!!)  We followed the sounds (and scents) of the animals and we were in for a treat!  Along with the Chickens, Goats and Pigs that we saw, we got to see a bunch of ducklings and a Rooster that made sure we knew he was there!  Before we left the store, Aunt Judy spotted a black Cowboy and sweet-talked him into a picture with me, LOL! I'm so surprised that we didn't get kicked out due to simply being goofy, but I'm sure we left them with some smiles. :-) Can't wait to visit and get a pair of boots to match my hat! read more

If you have cityfolk visiting you, bring them here for an eye-opening experience. I came on a Saturday once and there was a live band playing music in the front. I went to Tomlinson's Pet Store to buy some duck pellets and was referred here. Inside the store they have 10-lb bags of "Capitol Feed and Mill" (Callahan's store brand) duck, chicken, rabbit food and supplements right next to the door on the north side of the entrance. Near that, in front of the checkout counters, are 50-lb bags of all sorts of organic chicken feed for different stages of development. The brand is Coyote Creek. Bird food I've bought here: - 10-lb bags of corn chops (cracked corn for the unusually cold nights) = $5.00 - 50-lb bag of corn chops = $8.85 - 10-lb bags of duck and goose pellets = $5.00 - 50-lb bag of duck and goose pellets = $12.15 - 5?- lb bag of crushed oyster shell (calcium for laying hens) = $1.25. - birdseed that runs from $0.85 - $1.00 per pound (If you get 50-lb bags, then it's cheaper.) They have a wide variety of stuff. There are different types of farming tools, bird houses, bulk birdseed bins, books about raising animals, medicine for sick rural animals, feed containers, fruit and vegetable seed packets, clothing, baby goats, roosters, pet food, etc... The bulk birdseed bins include: wild bird feed, finch feed, pigeon/dove feed, canary feed, millet, etc... Don't use the brown paper sacks provided by the store to carry your birdseed because the seams at the bottom are poorly-sealed and will leak birdseed. They do not provide markers and labels to write which kind of birdseed you got. The weigh scale is manual but easy to read. The cashier will also weigh it when she rings you up. A huge warehouse wraps around the north and east side of the store where the employees can load up your tractor-trailer, truck, or sedan with 50-lb bags of feed, bales of hay, etc... You just tell the cashier inside what you want, she'll ring up your order, you drive into the entrance in the middle of the store, wait at the stop sign, hand your receipt to the employee who tells you which number to drive to, pop open the trunk, and they'll throw your purchase into your car. The best room in Callahan's is the chick/rabbit/duckling room on the way to the dog food warehouse in the back. The lady who manages that room is a great person. read more

I have been curious to check out this place ever since moving to Austin a year ago. I pass by it ever time I am going to and from the airport. Finally one Saturday late afternoon I stopped in to check out exactly what this place was about. As I pulled in a live band was picking up, and the original food truck (a historic chuck wagon) was closing shop. It looks like Saturday afternoons are quite lively here. Upon entering the store we were immediately greeted by the store's mascot, Pinky (an adorable pet goat), and her friend. They were unfortunately crying out as their water was bone dry. We let a store clerk know, and they immediately refreshed the water bowl. There were also full grown chickens, the store owner mentioned they sell 300-400 chickens per week! The store has been around for sometime, and is family owned. The store is huge; a country feed store on steroids. They have a bit of everything, from unique gifts, to kitchen supplies, pet items, bullwhips, clothes, you name it they have it. if you need any Texas related items to bring your new home up to code, this is the place to get the giant stars or flags. The prices also seemed reasonable. For each section there seemed to be staff on hand to help you in that area. which is very nice, so you don't have to run around trying to find someone. The hat section at the back was impressive, a full collection of Stetson's. The guy mentioned that they have several large clearance sales throughout the year, and that we should come back during that time for some great sales. They also had a good sized boot area. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. As you walk towards the far left hand corner, the store gets a bit smellier and you will start to hear the sounds of little baby chicks. They also had rabbits, and baby ducks. The area is cramped, and while the owners seemed to have good intentions, the animals were in tight old rusty cages, which seemed to be leaking into the water troughs. Who knows when the water was changed, some of the water supply looked murkier than others. The lady also mentioned not to touch some of the rabbits as they were diseased, and mentioned something about free antibiotics with the purchase of the animals. The living conditions of the animals could probably use an upgrade. read more

Eat your heart out Wal-Mart greeters! That was my experience a few days ago at Callahan's on 183. I was looking for one of those decorative windmills for the wife for an anniversary gift. You know the third year is galvanized out here in the country followed by something stuffed in the fourth year. Callahans had a few options with good prices; but I ended up finding exactly what I needed closer to home. If you need the following and are in the area Callahans is the place for you. Western wear, anything country kitchen, hardware, and ranch supplies. As for me, I'm contemplating employment here. That rocking chair has my name all over it. read more

WAY BACK MACHINE. Where can you go to buy bunnies, chickens, fruit trees, tools and just about everything you can think of. I went because I had a RAT I was trying to get rid of. They have all kinds of products but I had been trying to get rid of this rat for quite some time but it was eating (and I assume getting fat) on all the other products you find at the BIG BOX stores. The product says "one bar and it's over" and it was true to it's word. I live out of town and normally we order the brand of dog food that our dog will eat from Amazon but we wanted to support this feed store starting last fall. I buy in bulk so I haven't been to the store since February 2020 but I went there today and I noticed a prominent sign that said "do not touch the baby chicks" but didn't think anything about it since they always have goats or something up front. I walked in with my little dog and went right to the dog food and put it in a basket. I waited in line behind 1 person and even let someone go ahead of me because they were carrying a 50lb bag of dog food. Right after that the manager (I assume) made a scene and said "Sir, you aren't allowed in here without a mask!" I told him I didn't see a sign and he pointed to a small sign on the door opposite side of the baby chick sign. I said sorry but I don't have a mask since I live out of town where they are not required and I drove all this way to buy from your store. He said again loudly, "It is store policy to have a mask." Now he was just being rude. The man in front finished paying for his dog food and I went up to the counter and the manager waited right by me and watched me. I was very nice to the cashier and the expression from her eyes were like embarrassment (she was wearing a mask) and I paid and the manager followed me out. I felt like I was treated like a criminal when I was only in there for less than 10 minutes. I was in customer service for more than 15 years and if it were me I would have pulled a customer aside to inform them, not humiliate them in front of other customers. This has nothing to do with a mask policy. This is a customer service problem. Needless to say I will not be supporting this business in the future. read more

My dogs really like this store. So do my friends kids. For some reason, I always leave with a cool animal-themed toy or gameand some odd animal parts for the pups to chew. I use them for my bulk feed and bedding needs because the staff are friendly and helpful, the prices are good, and they have quality products. I love that I can get a whole bale of hay and 40 lb bags of bedding and rabbit food for much less than I can say any local pet stores or by mail and they even help me load it right into my vehicle. We use their horse stall pine bedding pellets for our cat and rabbit litter boxes and not only does it works great, but it's natural and compostable! read more

Callahans is a pretty good seed and feed supply store. They sell baby chickens and sometimes goats. Great place to visit if you're keeping chickens in the backyard. You can buy their feed here, but if you've got raccoons trying to eat your chickens, like I did, then you can get a live trap from Callahahans, too. Over the years, they've filled more of their shelf space with Chinese-made crap products, but they mostly still carry the legit goods. read more

The stuff you can get here is amazing, and the prices are usually pretty good. The employees are nice, and it's just one of those cool old-school places you don't see very often anymore. I came here to buy some new hens for my little farm. I have to admit, I felt bad for the animals in the pens, but would never say that to a rancher. Lol the goats and pigs didn't look happy, and the pigeons. Why the H are there pigeons in cages here? The chickens I bought were manhandled with a net and stuffed one on top of the other under a guys armpit while he caught the next. I have never heard a chicken scream like that.
