The Sun Café Restaurant was the perfect venue. From a quick walk around in the rain, Lancaster looks to be a pretty little town with some narrow cobbled backstreet that reminded me of Edinburgh. The Sun is situated on one of these backstreet. The décor and ambience of speak of relaxed quality and of The Sun having put roots down a while ago. From the website, The Sun looks to be run by a very hands on chef-patron. From the outside, I found it very inviting, especially the detailing on the custom wrought metal. Inside, it is definitely a smart restaurant and I am guessing that the 'Café' in the name refers either to an earlier incarnation of this place or else serves to alert potential customers that The Sun also offers breakfast, lunch and coffee much more informally. Our evening played out beautifully - from 6.30pm, we enjoyed the peace of the place to ourselves for the first hour and after that it was just nicely busy for a weekday evening. With the food, I have to admit to not have been that hungry and also absorbed in my highly charismatic companion! My companion had some indulgent chocolate brownie dessert which seemed to hit the spot. The white wine was also pronounced satisfactory. Service was really good - our elegant blonde waitress made us feel at home but special. Rounding up with a tip, the bill came to £35 for one vegetarian main, one starter, one pudding and two glasses of wine. All in, The Sun is a great venue. Although not cheap, I felt our meal was really 'grandstanding' it for a special occasion, without breaking the bank. My companion tells me mains here are reasonably sized, although starters apparently can be on the small side. But whereas I might even grudge the cost of a Pizza Express meal, I didn't feel that at all here. If you live locally, the breakfast and lunch menus are totally different and priced much lower, so that is something The Sun can do for you on a budget! My home patch for dining out right now is Manchester. I've only tried a couple of Modern British/European restaurants that would compare to The Sun (Thomas in the Northern Quarter, Bistro West 156 in Didsbury, but for an all-round dining experience and imaginative vegetarian options, The Sun is definitely better IMO.

They were happy to reserve space for us and despite our group being pretty loud and even a little rowdy at times, the staff was all smiles and joking right alongside us. The owner, a delightfully smiley frenchman, came upstairs to personally serve some of the dishes. Each of us had ordered something different, plus a starter and a dessert, and there wasn't a single complaint out of anyone. They even brought us some party crackers, haha! I am pretty new in town but I hear from a lot of people that the brunch here is great and that the lunch specials are a good way to try out the menu without going broke. Saying that, I think the prices were really reasonable when we were there and I'd go back in a minute.

We hid from the rain this little cafe and ordered some excellent fry ups. Two of us had the standard English breakfast while Dan went for the large version which contained a serious amount of meat. I really enjoyed mine. The line up was scrambled egg (you get to choose you egg type), sausage, bacon, black pud, beans, tomato, mushrooms, hash brown and toast. My toast could have been more toasted (it was still pretty much bread) but everyone else's looked good so I think it was a blip. I had a latte too which was good. It's waitress service to order but they were not in any rush to come over so if you are hungry I'd suggest heading up to the counter.

It was actually recommended to my friends and I from the owner/operator of a kayaking company in Bowness-on-Windermere. He said he visits Homeground all the time. Anyway, the restaurant is located on a busy little main street full of restaurants and cute shops, which makes for great walking post-meal. Parking can be kind of a bitch. If you're lucky, you find something free on the street. If you're not, you find a nearby pay lot. The restaurant itself has that whole hipster/earthy vibe to it. Even the employees fit the look. It's open, it's woody, and the first thing you see when you walk in is the big coffee apparatus (listen, I don't drink coffee, I have no idea what those machines are called...) and the barista. Food is brought to your table and cleaned up for you. Our cashier was friendly, even when he was barraged with a ton of questions from a very picky eater in our bunch. He actually took the time to explain the process of poaching an egg to her, despite how busy he seemed. (FYI: If it says poached egg, you're getting a poached egg. This is not a "cook eggs to your liking" kind of place.) And when I asked him for recommendations on a sweet treat, he gladly shared his favorite. The menu is amazing (see photos), so I had a hard time choosing what I wanted. In the end, I ordered the Homeground Sarnie (not realizing it was a sandwich). This was a hell of a sandwich, loaded with everything from bacon and eggs (an add-on) to a weird (but delicious) fried hash brown patty. (Also, I'd like to say that I love how arugula is so widely used in the UK.) In addition to my sandwich, I ordered a scone with a side of butter and jam (when in Rome...). The scone had dried fruit, which added some additional sweetness; it was crusty on the outside, soft on the inside - yum! And because I'm a girl who loves to eat (and has a major sweet tooth), I also ordered one of the pastries on display. Unfortunately, no photo, but it was a blueberry frangipane bar with a lovely dollop of cream on top. I didn't eat this till much later, but it was tasty. I also had a few bites of my friend's Huevos Rancheros order and WOW - a definite recommend (although, make sure you're hungry, as this is a pretty big portion). Get the chorizo - it's fantastic. If I ever find myself in Windermere again, I'd definitely go back.
