I went through here in about an hour. It would take you much longer if you read everything on display. Lots of the stories on the timeline are fascinating. I thought it was well put together and should be thrilling for the alien enthusiasts. After checking out all the museum displays, there's a decent sized gift shop offering various types of merchandise. I got a cool fridge magnet as a souvenir for visiting this infamous museum. If you ever come to Roswell, whether you are into or believe in aliens, you have to visit the UFO Museum. It represents what Roswell is known for, and it's just an overall interesting experience with everything chronologically displayed nicely.

If you're not much of a reader, you don't get the benefit of the full value of the museum but still definitely interesting to check out for just 7 bucks. There are clean restrooms here and a fun simulation as well as an awesome gift shop carrying lots of alien themed items. One thing that was very interesting is the Research center. I believe it's free without admission ( they accept donations). You can go inside and it's essentially a library with UFO and paranormal themed books, as well as a separate room for sci fi books and another room with more incident reports and such to look at. It's pretty neat and I wish I had more time to sit and read a few of the interesting books they had. In short, this place is more fun for adults than for kiddos but if the kiddos can read it may be interesting for them.

If you park in the Shell gas station lot, you can walk up to it easily and get better photos than the ones I did. I was just in a hurry to get my daughter to her doctor's appointment in Roswell back on April 8, 2026. As you walk up to it, you'll see the plaques with historical and artistic information. This truly realistic sculpture was created by Vic Payne (dated March 24, 2007). It is the first in a series of three statues that tells the "Cattle Drive" story. The other two are scattered along downtown. I don't envy the trail boss, but I do respect him. Can you imagine putting up with the egos of all those cowboys/vaqueros AND the cattle? Both have the famous "Roswell" sign and our favorite part was right up on top, if you look closely at the cow graphic the one closest to the UFO is being sucked up by the flying saucer. North Side Sign: This one had a historical placard you can read and it's own designated small parking lot. This was the first one we went to and though its covered in graffiti and stickers we still found it charming. The South Side Sign: No placard and you have to go further down the freeway going south toward Carlsbad to see the small diorama with a crashed UFO and Rockwell style classic small town folk withe their broken down car. The life-sized sculptures are part of the History in Bronze collection and can be viewed by vehicle or foot along the Artesia Mural Trail. In particular, The Derrick Floor represents the discovery of oil and other fossil fuels. My dad was a long-time oilfield mechanic, so this depiction, the plaques, and the very deliberate design all hit home for me. This is very dangerous, yet, rewarding work. Three bronze sculptures here in the middle of Artesia's "Oil Pioneer Plaza" were dedicated on April…read more24, 2004 as part of the 80th anniversary of the first commercial oil well in southeastern New Mexico. The first, "Partners" depicts oilmen Mack Chase and Johnny Gray leaning on the hood of a ickup truck. The two local men went into the oil and gas business in 1972, and for 20 years ran a successful company making most of their business deals this way: no lawyers, and just a sun-baked truck hood desk. The second is "Woman's Intuition" and depicts Mary Yates sitting on a spool of cable, pointing to a spot on the ground. Her husband had drilled two dry wells, and the Yates' hired geologist refused to pick another. So Mary chose a spot and said, "Drill there." Her husband did, and struck oil on April 9, 1924, ushering in the Artesia oil boom. The third sculpture, "Derrick Floor," is a full-size 37-foot-high drilling rig created by artist Vic Payne. According to its plaque, the sculpture is meant to ennoble the workers "who take the risks and do the work to find, produce, and refine New Mexico oil and gas."
