When…read moreordering tickets, the website said the jet boat was unavailable until August 21st and that a pontoon boat would be $29/person. Our tickets were $45/person on Aug 22 for the jet boat. The website showed that you could purchase up to 13 tickets for that day as well, so we booked it for 7 people. The views were great and the staff were very nice, specially the shuttle driver! However, that's about the only good I can say. For this being part of Adventure on the Gorge, a company that makes significant profit, I was extremely let down. Even though we paid for the jet boat, we learned from the boat captain that the jet boat was unavailable and that the available boats could only hold 6 and 5 people (total of 11). So, we ended up splitting our group into 6 on a very old pontoon boat, and our last 1 rode with another group on an old speedboat. The ride is advertised as great for all ages, which is such a lie. We took my grandparents, who are in their 80s, and while the ride was nice for them, nothing about this was accessible. We were told to only walk in the left side of the dock, and there were no handrails. AOTG should do better, especially considering how expensive these tickets were. I would give the view 5 stars, but the logistics and deception receive 1star.

We booked…read morethe venue from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a brunch reception and were told we could arrive an hour early to decorate. I had attended a wedding here years ago and remembered it being beautiful, so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, our experience was nothing like what we expected. We paid $4,044.80 for mediocrity and insolence. In April, I paid for the venue over the phone, yet we were never given a contract or even a receipt. During our reception, William "Bill" approached me and accused me of never paying. Imagine being accused of not paying for your wedding venue while your guests are still there. It was embarrassing, insulting, and completely avoidable. He only believed me after I pulled up my bank transaction and proved it. The lack of communication between Bill and the event coordinator, Allyson, was obvious from the start. They frequently contradicted each other, we were told things were included that weren't, and the result was unexpected charges and unnecessary stress on our wedding day. Trying to communicate with Allyson beforehand was like pulling teeth. It often took multiple attempts to get answers, and several of those answers turned out to be wrong. We were promised comfortable chairs for our photo booth...they never appeared. We were told the projector and microphone were available, only to find out they'd cost nearly $100 extra, despite barely working. The microphone was practically useless, and the projector had no sound. Instead of enjoying my reception, I spent nearly an hour troubleshooting their equipment. When we finally got the video to play, I had to hold my phone against the microphone because the projector couldn't produce audio. We also felt rushed from the moment the reception began. We had been told we could leave our decorations overnight, but before the reception even ended, staff repeatedly insisted everything be removed by 3:00 p.m., even telling us, "Well, we can't do anything until you get your stuff out of here." That was never what we had been told. Unfortunately, our guests noticed the staff's attitude before we did. Two guests even left early because of how they were treated. That's completely unacceptable for a venue charging thousands of dollars. We specifically asked staff not to clear our plates because we were greeting guests. They ignored us and threw away our meals anyway. I managed to eat one carrot, a bite of crab cake, and one bite of chicken and waffle before my plate disappeared. The food itself was equally disappointing. The chicken tenders were dry and tasted old, and the waffles reminded me of a budget motel breakfast--I'm talking Econolodge, not even Best Western. Guests received two tiny, stringy tenders, half a waffle, and a small salad. I had specifically requested the nuts be left out because of allergies, but they ignored that request. They at least warned guests the salad contained nuts (so people wouldn't die), but then had the audacity to tell some guests no one had informed them about allergies. Ironically, the only decent chicken tenders were the appetizer tray we paid extra for because we knew the kids would eat them. They were noticeably better than the entrée version...but of course, I never got one, and if I had, it probably would've been thrown away before I had the chance to eat it. The crab cakes were acceptable, but nowhere near worth almost $5 each. To top it off, once condiments ran out, they were never refilled. Our reception felt like an inconvenience to the people being paid to host it. Your wedding celebration is supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life. A venue should help reduce stress...not create it. Sadly, The Gaines Estate did exactly the opposite, and I cannot recommend it to anyone planning an event.

The staff are down…read moreto earth country folks, every day they clean the rooms and the housekeepers actually care and talk with you. The front desk staff are great as well. At check-in, me and my aunt wanted to switch rooms, because she needed 2 beds and she had a king reserved and I had a double queen reserved and I was by myself. The front desk agent said it was no problem and she put still made sure we were close to the rest of the family. (We were having a family reunion) also they placed all our rooms on the same floor. So we had the floor to us as a family. The 2 social areas on the floor were an added plus, great places to hang out as a group. The rooms are very well maintained and clean, the beds are firm with lots of pillows. All thou the sheets and blankets are a little thin. And the noise level is very quiet. Plus, the view from the balconies and the overlook of the New River is breathtaking. 10/10 for me, me and my whole family highly recommend this place for a great stay!

Our check was fast and friendly. With an excellent recommendation to a restaurant to top it off. Then after a wonderful night sleeping we woke to a great shower, & then downstairs to breakfast, which was a total experience, with fresh yogurt and pancakes that were made before our eyes. A special shoutout to Susan at the front desk her willingness to answer my questions and professionalism that can be appreciated so early in the day. Overall great experience. A great place for dog lovers to bring their furry family.

The elevators were out, two hallway tiles busted and needed replaced in the hallway, and the parking was not good at all. This location allows pickups with trailers to park there. In the three nights we were there a combined 30 plus spots were used/taken due to the trucks/trailors parking across parking lines. The parking lot is not that big, so when a few guests get to use more spaces because their vehicle needs more than 5 spots that is not fair to the rest of us

Taylor checked us in very fast and displayed exemplary customer service skills. My coworker checked us in and I was walking in as he was coming out, and she gave the extra effort to tell me where I was going. I appreciated her positive attitude and warm welcome after a very very long day of driving. I was shocked to have a large TV and a nice desk to work at. Shout out to Rodger for cleaning my room and leaving a personalized note. Just goes to show the staff actually care about this place. I would definitely recommend this place to any fellow travelers!

The are several charging ports in the room as well as a charging station in the lobby. You can get continental breakfast from 6am to 9am on weekdays and 7am to 10am on weekends. I would definitely stay here again!

Gas prices at the ExxonMobil station were reasonable, but half the pumps had problems ... such as the credit card reader didn't work or the pump was closed. All in all a nice stop for those trying to make time over the road. Try it ...

Public review for Designs by Barb and James in Oak Hill, WV…read more I was desperately searching for an excellent florist to design my Father's funeral standing spray and learned that Barb and her team were the absolute best in the area. Sadly, when I called, I was told that they do not deliver to the area where my Father's service is. It was too far from their shop. I asked to speak to Barb, the owner, and explained to her why this was so important to me and began pleading for her to do my design. She instantly agreed and offered to drive over an hour for the delivery to the funeral home with a delivery fee. I explained what I wanted and sent her photos of ideas and she and her team got to work. Their shop did this with only a two day notice. Barb texted me the attached photo tonight for approval of the completed design and I was overwhelmed with joy. She and her team created exactly what I wanted. The flower design couldn't be any more perfect. Barb, you and your team are incredibly talented.
