Today the 8th of December my friends and I went for a ladies lunch in Poppy Fields's when we got there we were seated and happy. About 20 minutes had a passed and no one had taken our order , we completely understand they were busy and it wasn't an issue whatsoever, to save the lady coming out I said I would go inside and go to the till to put our order in as I walked in I was met with the lady who rudely said to mr go outside I'll take your order out there it's to busy, I said no problem but it was rude and aggressive and the tone she used made me feel uncomfortable and shook. Shortly after the same lady came out to take our order and as she was leaving she slammed the menus on the table next to us loudly and with force. A while later our food had arrived. As she was giving us our food she said and I quite "no pepper " I said that's me and proceeded to hand the plate she implied was with no peppers to my friend and my friend said "no sorry that's not mine" and I said "I thinks it's mine I got it with no peppers" she turned to me in the RUDEST manor and said "yes you will have to wait" I was shocked and uneasy my friend turned to her and said" you are being so rude " and she said rudely , cheeky and just so smart "I'm not being rude" "am I being rude " and we just could not believe that this happened we didn't even finish our food we left in shock. We went to the till to pay for our food and the lady was so sweet behind the counter she said "if you guys are ever in a rush on your lunch just let us know we can accommodate you" it wasn't that we were in a rush it was that she was so rude and we understand it's lunch hour, rush hour and it can be stressful but it really left us unhappy and made us not want to go back ever again. I put my arm around my boyfriend's neck and was smiling and telling him something when the owner came over to tell us it was "inappropriate" behaviour and it was not that kind of place and we should stop. This was deeply humiliating as neither of us are teenagers anymore, we were not even kissing, no one was paying us absolute any mind and it has never, ever happened to either of us before. But most galling is that we were about a third of the clientele in the place, and making us so uncomfortable as to leave for something so petty was unbelievably bad business. I have no idea what the management is thinking. Nothing like this has happened to me before or since, and I would advise against go to a place where the owners are so strict and hellbent on squashing any demonstration of happiness or affection, regardless of how bad it may be for business. It's mostly designed to be a place to take food and drinks to go but it does have a counter and stools at the window. I picked up a flat white and a small Portuguese sweet cream tart. The espresso coffee was delicious, and the flat white was really well made. The coffee, from a traditional Italian roaster, is actually a 50:50 Arabica/Robusta beans and it blew away my misconception that you can't make good coffee with Robusta beans. The tart was interesting; the sweet cream was like dense sweet custard, rich with egg yolks. I'm not crazy about custardy things (why did you buy it then?!) but still enjoyed it! My brother goes there often, in particular for their Reuben sandwich, and highly recommends their savory food (along with the coffee!). They have just been has been nominated for Best Café Award in the Restaurants Association of Ireland - congrats folks! I'm also giving them 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. They have a lot of healthy and vegetarian options and their food is made in-house, including condiments like chutneys, dressings and pickles. They source ingredients locally whenever possible; from either the green grocer next door or their own garden (the owners have a poly tunnel). They source their local cheese directly from makers or via Sheridan's and their bread is from a local artisan baker. They use free-range eggs, including some from hens belonging to a staff-member! Their coffee is from Portioli, and old family-run roaster from Milan. It's probably because Portioli are so old-school that they have nothing to say about their coffee sourcing practices and they also don't have any certifications (Organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, etc.) so it's hard to judge for sure. Coffee aside, Bull Lane deserves kudos for making the effort to be independent from Big Food and intensive agriculture. Interested in writing green star reviews? If so, contact me! The coffee is not bad either and it's quite spacious inside with a lot of seats as well as a downstairs area. This little cafe is super cute and had an abundance of options from smoothies and coffees, to baked goods and sandwiches. I got one of their specials - a baked falafel wrap, with tomato, onion, lettuce and tzatziki. It was incredibly good - I was so impressed! It was a very reasonable amount of food too, which I always appreciate. It was served with a small beet salad, which was really lovely. I enjoyed the whole meal immensely. The whole trip to Kilkenny was fantastic, and this was a very wonderful part of it!
