Previous to meeting Brien, my wife and I bought a renovated home in Austin, TX. Unfortunately we were almost immediately told by the city that we needed a "Retroactive Remodel Permit." This basically means that we were responsible for all the unpermitted work done by the previous owner. The city shut off our power and we were not allowed to move in. I can't express the amount of confusion, distress, and anguish this situation caused. We were forced to move out of state (with our 3 children) to live with family. Over the next year we struggled to get through the city's slow and confusing permitting process which was compounded by the GC we had hired to do the work (who was similarly slow and non-communicative).
