We moved up to Ojai from LA this year so our 5-year-old could go to school in person. There are a lot of options in Ojai, but something gave us a good feeling about Monica Ros. As soon as we chatted with the two Kindergarten teachers on zoom, my wife and I looked at each other like "What that real?" They are WAY smarter than anyone needs to be, way more articulate, thoughtful, warm, in love with their jobs, and dialed into this developmental stage. We don't know a lot else about what's happening at the school. But I can't imagine a stronger teaching team anywhere in Ojai or LA for that matter. I'm an educator myself (for college and high school). HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION. Seriously.

I'm an elementary teacher in another district, so I can tell you I'm critical about the quality of their education. We have been very happy with all of their teachers, some of the best I've ever known in my 20+ years as an educator. They were spot on in quickly identifying and remediating learning challenges with my child. My children love their school, they feel safe, happy and enthusiastic about learning. They have a strong PTA that has financed some excellent improvements such as technology, outdoor shaded picnic lunch patio, new play structures, and many enrichments. It is a small school, will good teacher to student ratios and ample support staff. The administration has made it their mission to care for the students from a "whole child" perspective, focusing on character, emotional and social development, physical and mental health, as well as top notch education. Stellar campus!

Principal had no clue about special needs kiddos and the teachers they put in place to teach our special needs kiddos has no idea what he's doing, no compassion, no understanding or excepting, just judgment across the board, suspending my child who has an IEP with a behavioral plan because he was butt hurt my child hit him.... WELCOME TO MY WORLD SIR! You signed up to be a teacher, no every child is one the college track but your job is to teach and nurture our children and you sir did none of that! You broke my child down, he hated school, everyday was a battle to get him up and ready because you made everyday miserable for him! It has been many years since I attended Summit Elementary, but I had a great time there. My 4th and…read more5th grade teachers (now retired) were amazing and inspirational educators. The playground has changed a lot, but it's still fun for all ages (my nice and nephew, 6 and 7, have a ball, as do I, at 24). The sign says no horses, no dogs, no fun, but people have been riding horses and walking dogs through here for as long as I can remember (when school isn't in session, obviously) and no one has ever had a problem with it. The grounds are also entirely fenced in, so as long as you check all four gates, you can let your dog run and play (supervised, of course) without fear. The playground features a soccer field surrounded by a track, but the gophers have rendered the track pretty dangers. Anything above a slow jog probably isn't safe. There is a basketball court, a handball court, tether ball, four square, a baseball diamond, swings, big toy - fun for all ages and interests. It's especially a great place to stop and have a break and a picnic if you're passing through Upper Ojai by car, bike, or horse.
