Really amazing inconvenient that there are multiple different schedules you can pick from, we do one of their TOPS PM programs and love that my kids get asleep every day and the mornings aren't as rushed. The only downside about the school is the lack of prioritization on outdoor play, starting in third grade. They cut out most recesses during the week and fourth grade up in most classroom that I'm aware of they do not go outside for recess, except for on Friday they only get little breaks in the classroom to socialize. My kids are busy playing club sports so that's one of the reasons we love the shorter day schedule so we make it work, but it would be incredible to still fit in one little outdoor recess every day, kids need to be outside! Will specifically mention Renee Powell who is an extremely talented and caring 1st grade teacher. I'm continually blown away when I'm in her classroom by her balance of classroom management while still being patient, loving and kind to the kids who need something and have comments and questions literally every 10 seconds. My daughter has struggled a bit to keep up with grade level standards and she has really gone above and beyond to give her the individual attention she needs and to partner with me on everything we can do to help her. My mom and sister emailed the principal about it over 10 times with no answer. We asked him why he hadn't done anything and he said, "It went into my junk automatically." Should I really believe the man who ran away from my mom after she said hi? No! No! I would never. These homophobic kids have bullied me for a whole year in front of teachers. After yelling "It's back!" and everyone gasping, the teacher got mad at my friend for winking. Other kids have thrown food at me, called me names, even called me slurs behind my back, and the teachers get mad at me for standing RIGHT BESIDE THE BENCHES during lunch. They also have gone against my IEP since I was a kid. They have been told REPEATEDLY that I have to have my work cut down and one of the teachers has followed that rule. The only exception to this awful school is my 5th grade teacher. I will not name him, but if you have been at this school for a long time, you must have heard of him. He was amazing, followed my IEP, ACTUALLY cared about people being unkind to other students, and let us all give constructive criticism about his teaching. I will conclude with this: The school once asked if they deserved the A+ award and everyone stayed silent.

They have up to date curriculums, free breakfast and lunch for every student, good sports available for all grade levels, after school clubs for older kids, and a fair choice of extra curricular activities, like: dance, music, pe, karate, ect. I love that the campus is fenced in. Teachers are nice and happy. Really great for the kids and push reading. They have excelled my kids even though they are at a more excelled level then their peers. They don't get lost in the class but encouraged with harder materials. The downfalls: bus transportation is not organized. Don't show up at stops on time. Sometimes an hour late. The drivers don't control the kids very well either. The campus looks run down. Playgrounds are small and no field. The cafeteria is outdoors. Very hot during the summer and very cold during the winter. The outdoor portion only works for two months out of the school year. The office does not answer their phones and when voicemails are left they do not return your calls. Hard to get a hold of on the phone. In person is fine.

Luckily, I found East Valley Academy not too far from my new home. That was four years ago and I have to say that I couldn't imagine my kids attending another school. This school offers what we all want for our children that public schools don't offer. It's small, yes, and that is a huge bonus. Kid to teacher ratio is outstanding! The two classes for all grades is another advantage over other schools. These kids learn together and help each other! They also devote more time to learning the basics. They do plays and take field trips often and they have holiday parties that you can even bake for! My son was reading after only two months in kindergarten and now is reading at a 6th grade level in 3rd grade. My daughter ranked top 3% in the nation for her math skills on the state test in 3rd grade and she just recently tested into Algebra 1 for 7th grade that she will obtain high school credit for! My daughter went to K and 1st grade at a public school in the Paradise Valley school district. We had problem after problem, such as bullying, and her 1st grade teacher lying to me and brushing off inconsistencies I noticed in my daughter's learning. She got A's, but I could tell she wasn't really learning much. My daughter is very smart but defiant. I was spending an extraordinary amount of time supplementing her education. I talked to other parents who had to do the same but seemed resigned to their fate. She didn't have a love of learning. However, during her last two years with East Valley Academy (EVA) everything has turned around. She learned more in the first two months than she did in the previous two years at her public school. EVA focuses on phonics based reading and Saxon math, not Common Core. They took her down to the building blocks of phonics she'd never learned and built her reading up from there. She went from a Kindergarten reading level to a 3rd grade reading level in her first year there (2nd grade). Her math became much more proficient as well, and she was doing well in every subject. Ms. Stoeppelmann also identified her ADD before I could. Both teachers were very responsive and thorough when giving feedback about her attention span, moods, organization, etc., while trying to find the right medication. This showed me how well they know each of their students. Most importantly for me, though, is that she now has a love of learning. I truly can't see her having this level of success at any other school. She has even scored high on more difficult tests than most high school students take. EVA has even positively affected our home life. I've always been an involved parent, but am no longer spending hours after school patching all the holes in learning that her last school was leaving, which led to many disagreements and friction between my daughter and myself. This school is small. Very small. Don't let that deter you. It operates similarly to a little red schoolhouse. It's not fancy, but the size allows for individual attention for each student in a way that the teachers can really get to know their learning styles and be able to work with them. Ms. Stoeppelmann and Mr. Ryan are excellent teachers, with years of experience, who have such finesse with conveying the information that the kids thoroughly learn it. That is crucial to me. The perks of this school are many. There is a sense of community among parents and kids, which also eliminates bullying. If something does arise it's easily resolved with the parents and teachers. This sense of community also opens the door for celebration of the different cultures of the students. The lunch break is longer so the kids have some real free time to recharge and focus better while in class. EVA also takes many field trips as well with plenty of parent chaperones. This school isn't the easy way out. My daughter works hard to get her good grades, and I've worked with her and the school to keep her success going. But for every bit of effort I put in, the teachers put in at least twice as much. Unlike the public school the dialogue between families and teachers is open. To me these are what make the difference between every other school and this one. EVA is there solely to teach kids and help them reach their potential. They care about these kids.

We have 2 boys at Islands and since day one at the front office, the two front office ladies Miss Brenda and Miss Shelley were super welcoming, nice and remembered our boys names. They even started tracking his height as the ultimate bonding moments. The building blocks teachers are always doing fun holiday meals and activities. They also have the best Halloween and Holiday Activities as well as events celebrating our Veterans and First Responders. A true class act with absolutely no negatives. Shouts out and GOLD STAMPS to Miss Orona, Castellano, Cockrum, Hunter, Gloria and Stephanie. As well as Miss Mckerchy who was an absolute angel for one of our boys. They all go above and beyond and should be greatly commended. GPS please recognize these outstanding teachers as they are truly making a positive difference and displaying excellence in education on many different levels.
