I explained to him that an expensive bottle of Moët & Chandon that we purchased had gone bad. Didn't know that was even possible - but it's true. I took the bottle and receipt to the store to let him know the bottle (and perhaps the case) were bad. I didn't ask for a free bottle, but perhaps a credit of some kind for future use - for BEER or mints or something that couldn't possibly go bad. Obviously, when buying fine champagne, I know I shouldn't have purchased it at a liquor store, but it's all that was needed for a special dinner and I didn't feel like going to the grocery store (where they lock up the Moët). I will never make that mistake again. Just sayin', don't give this rude merchant your money. There's plenty of liquor stores in the area.
