On 4/21/2021 I stopped by BSCU Hollywood branch to get $5000 of my checking account and the teller asked me: why do I need it for? It is clear to me that what I do with my money is nobody business and that was my answer. Thereafter, she went to speak with Gregory, who is the teller supervisor, and he decided that was not reason for me to get my money so he denied the transaction. Since when we are living in an autocracy? I thought all these years we live in the United State of America, that we have constitutional rights? When I asked Gregory to speak with the branch manager, Gregory told me he was the manager. When, I called costumer service to complain about the situation, I found out he was a teller supervisor not a manager. Gregory, you are a pathetic little lair on a power trip! Apparently, BSCU has the arrogant policy to invite themselves into deciding what you can or you can't do with your money and if you provide them with the wrong answer, they punish you by depriving of your own money. Yesterday instead of walking with 5000 dollars, I walked out with a lot of more because I closed my accounts and took my business to another bank. Please, do not take my word for it, go to your nearest BSCU branch and ask to get 5000 dollars cash from your account, then tell them what you do with your money is not of their business. If they denied you of your own money, as they did to me, please close your account and take your business to a serious institution. Not matter how the teller, the teller supervisor, the customer service supervisor on the phone or Shanelle (one of the Davie branch managers, I spoke with) defended how good this policy has worked for "customers", still it is not their business what you do with your money. I didn't ask for a line of credit, I asked for my money. Money that I rightfully earned. BSCU you need to learn how to respect your customers privacy and their constitutional rights. So I attempted to transfer funds from my bank from another bank. After 4 days I called and questioned my deposit and I was never told that they needed anything from me. The rep said they need to confirm my info. He asked me questions not even related to my account and was told that I just needed to wait. The reason why I made the switch from big banks to Credit Unions is because I am so tired of getting charged a lot of fees and get no services in return. And after I many years of banking with them, I felt like I made the right choice. First of all, I get better interest rate with my money market account than the bank where I used to bank with. Savings account rates are better than most published rates with other banks. And also, when I applied for personal line of credit, the rates are lower than the banks I worked with. In terms of service, I say its better than the banks I worked with. I do not make transactions a lot in the branches a lot, but when I do I feel like they took good care of me. And with the ATM's, I get no services charges at all Publix locations, which is just about everywhere. Even if I do have to travel out of state, they are in the nationwide credit union network so I still get to do most of my transactions. This credit union might only be in Broward and Palm Beach county, but since I don't plan to move away anytime soon, I think I will keep banking with them. read more

This is honestly the worst bank in existence. Their bank policies are stuck in the 80s. It can take up to ten days for a deposit to clear. They charge overdraft fees for pending amounts. The app is not helpful. The people are rude. If you call customer service expect at least a thirty minute wait. If you go to a branch, expect people who do not care. After a little over a year with this bank, I am closing my account. From the beginning, it's been nothing but a headache. For example, after activating direct deposit and changing all of my information with my employer, they randomly closed the acct due to inactivity. I had to go to the branch and explain this. To the credit of the Coconut Creek branch staff, they were very helpful and assisted me. The issue is that this should never had happened. I sent the proper funds and set up the account. It is extremely unprofessional to just close an account without warning. Secondly, I have had it with this bank purposely delaying transactions so that your account overdraws and you have to pay a fee. Never had an issue with other banks but this bank fails to process purchases for several days seemingly without explanation and it doesn't even show as a pending charge. You make another purchase, thinking you have plenty of funds, then boom--here comes a transaction you made a week ago (not exaggerating). Customer service is terrible as well. I went to the FTL branch to explain I had a damaged debit card and showed that it was not lost or stolen. I asked if I could keep the card active until I could get a replacement because it was linked to all my online account. The teller quickly warned me before I could finish "It will be $10". Okay, but can you keep my current card active? "No." with no explanation. It's time to move on. I went to a credit union for a reason, if I want big bank attitude I will go back. Call the customer service and on hold 20 plus minutes to have the rep hang up/disconnect and not call back just after I verified my number. Messages via the app and emails go unanswered. Money is not safe. My savings account was debited all of its funds for various "fees" for inactiveness. They never even sent a notice. Went to branch and manager said he would work on it. I was charged 3 overdraft fees for three different transactions that I was trying to stop. I was not allowed to transfer money into the account to stop the overdraft fees and after calling customer service and being on hold for an hour, the representative told me that there was no way to prevent a transaction from going through. And no way to prevent it in the future. And I have to send an online request to get the three overdraft fees returned. After being on hold for an hour she sends me to the website. One of the transactions was $9 and I get charged $34 for it. I'm trying to close my account and she said she wouldn't do that either. Brightstar is a scam bank! read more

The Hollywood Fl bank has to be the worst in everything from the waiting time to customer service. The manager told me that he is doing his job just fine after I pointed out that he had no idea how to treat customers with complaints. No apologies for the extra long wait times in the car service and the teller services, instead he suggested to use computer/apps/atms so as to not have contact with the lack of people services. After banking with them since 96 they didnt even have a picture ID on file! I need to change!! read more

Due to their system "error" this bank opened old closed accounts in good standings and reported false information to the credit bureaus, affecting thousand of clients credit scores. They do not assume any responsibility. I was in the middle of very important business and now my credit did not go back up the 150+ points it dropped. Rosita is awesome! Her level of customer service is by far some of the best I have ever experienced and I do not believe this is the first time I have encountered her. She is very professional and you get the sense she really wants to help. Five stars! Any company would be grateful to have such an incredible employee. In addition, Janice has been the most responsive representative at BSCU that I have ever met. Stay away from Brightstar Credit Union! They repossessed my car for 45 days of nonpayment even though they know my current finances. Luckily, on the same day of repossession, I paid off the entire loan but still did not get my car until 4 or 5 days later! I had to pay over $400 to get my car back. And on top ? of that, they still put me down as delinquent in my credit history yesterday 9/4/2022 while stating I paid it off at the same time. I paid off my complete balance 08/17/2022 and I still can't claim the title on my car yet because they hadn't update it until yesterday. The staff members are vindictive and have lousy customer service. They were anticipating I would not be able to pay my complete balance so they can sell my car! Upon opening the account, the person was very cold and robotic. Never called me by name just answered questions in a stiff manner. If you need to call which you do often because the whole thing is confusing even after you close, you have to listen to a long recording and then finally they give you the option of leaving a callback number. After waiting and the person finally calls they are generally very friendly and helpful but there is always something that you need to call back for and then the process starts again. If you wait on hold no one will answer the phone. Branches are not convenient or nearby and the whole process of getting funds is confusing and difficult. read more

As a teacher here in Broward County I am able to receive certain discounts. Bright Star offers competitive rates for CDs, auto loans, mortgages, etc, for its members. When we began searching for a new car the loan rate at the dealership was around 8% but through Bright Star we were able to get 4.74 %. The dealership was floored with our great rate. And I was also able to open an 11 month CD at 5.25 % with a minimum of $500. Their rates vary based on if you're a member and obviously your credit score. But most importantly, there's service. Jenny Menedez is the assistant branch manager and man she is fantastic. Phone calls were replied to in a very timely manner and the loan process was explained to me very very clearly. I'm a complete moron when it comes to financial speak. Jenny was very excited to find out we found our Prius so quickly and informed other employees of the new ride who in turn congratulated us. It was simply nice. Something that I feel is lost when it comes to dealing with a bank these days. You do not have to be a member to research their rates or even get a loan. I think you should do just that, research your rates. It's worth your time! I've been a member of Brightstar now a little over a year. They love to advertise free checking and low rates on mortgages and loans. If the level service BrightStar provides is what I have to do to get free checking than it's not worth it. Every time I have to go into a branch for anything, even to make a deposit or withdrawal I end up waiting twice as long as any other bank. I just went in today to a branch to get my pin number changed. There were 3 people behind the counter two on the floor and after 20 minutes of waiting no one could simply take my card and reset my pin. I'm considering keeping this account just to write checks out of because seriously if you have to have any interaction with this bank you'll soon see that it's just not worth the hassle. Also I've been given bad financial advice that's actually hurt my credit. Last year I wanted to convert a secured credit card to a regular credit card. I was told I would be approved and if anything it wouldn't hurt my credit score. Not only was I denied for the card it dropped my credit score having that inquiry on there. Seriously unless you have 100% perfect credit (and I've even heard horror stories from people that did) don't use this bank for anything other than writing checks from. From the second we meet her she was kind understanding and was able to help us deposit the funds into another credit union down the street that I must say was not pleasant at all. As soon as we can we will be opening accounts back at Bright Star . Also when my daughter attends college this fall in South Florida , she will be opening a account there as well. There is no accessible way to your account if you forget one piece of information. There's no way to reset the information either. Not a good set-up for housing someone's financial lifeline. Hold times are a nightmare. Sickening that they upgrade a site requiring Login with difficult to access information. Then, you have to start all over to get in. I've spent months trying to access my account here. Today, it has taken me all day and still no success. Hold times exceed 45 minutes and no automated system- how about considering entering the year 2021??? Awful experience! Do not do not open an account with these thief's! They keep posting a transaction and also leaving it as pending so they take the money out of the available balance then of something else posts to the account they charge you a courtesy fee for paying the vendor yet in all actuality you do have the money in your account. Don't do it!! Brightstar Credit Union is the worst credit union I have ever worked with, horrible customer service, horrible management and horrible policies. Whenever you make a phone call be prepared to wait at least 20-45 mins before anyone bothers to pick up the phone. The first of many unpleasant moment with Brightstar was when they put a lock on my debit/credit card twice for no reason at all, I hadn't went out of the state or made multiple purchases. When I called, waited 45 mins for someone to pick up the phone, no one was able to tell me why they put a fraud lock on my account and on top of that I had to wait 24 hrs before they removed it! Inconvenient does not even begin to explain it! I recently overdrafted on my account, bad I know but things happen anyway money I was expecting to come into the account was two days late. They charged me $102.00 for borrowing $25.60 that is 400% interest!! How is that legal? I have a total of 4 other accounts, 2 with another credit union and 2 with a traditional bank and they do not have this ridiculous policy. When I called to have the fees reversed I was passed around from person to person for over 4 days and the final answer was "We can't help you." What a crock of bull! I inquired back in June on how to protect myself from overdraft fees and was told "There is nothing you can do." I asked if I could put money in my savings account that they could pull from in case of emergencies and I was told no. Now I get, they don't want to help you, they would rather charge you 400% interest and pocket the money. I feel completely robbed! Last week I made a deposit to my account from a bank that I've used many times before in the past with no problem and the checks from those deposits were cashed within 3 or 4 days. This time I get a letter form them saying that they're holding my check for seven days cause they don't think the check any good. Even though BS Credit union has never had any problems in the past with these deposits. By the way, that seven days is now or will be 11 days and at this point I have a balance of $.07. Brightstar Credit Union is by far the worst establishment when rated on a customer satisfaction and efficiency scale. I had opened an account when I first began teaching because I was told that if I opened a checking account with direct deposit after 10 months I would have a $100 credit put into my savings account. The $100 was not worth the headache and hassle this bank bought to me for the past 3 years. A customer is slammed with ATM fees due to the fact BSCU has such few locations,... any request sent to them was always returned with "red-tape" huge delays in time,... checks were refunded in the incorrect amount,..... accounts could not be closed without making a deposit and having the difference mailed back to me via cashiers check..... I am not embellishing when I say that each time I had to deal with this company and it's employees I was confronted with ill-informed staff as well as ridiculous constraints on the way I managed MY OWN money. It's no wonder they literally have to pay people to join their bank. Finally, if you think credit union, lower rates, think again!!! Do some research and go with a bank that can support you and your monetary needs, and avoid this headache known as BSCU the best you can. Absolutely awful. read more

I had been told before by Broward Schools employees to "don't deal with Brightstar", but I had to experience it myself. I was told misleading and deceptive information by Joyce Gaines at an on boarding event for Broward Schools. I called to verify the information, and the woman (don't know the name) who answered the phone verified some not all of the information. The representative, Devon, at the Hollywood location told me something totally different when it comes to loans. I am disgusted that I have been lied to by a marketing representative selling accounts at Broward Schools events! I did not open an account because if I am having this kind of problem initially, there is no telling what is coming up in the future!! Don't do it folks! read more

This process was horrible, and we were was promised things and none of them came true. Told loan officer (Gabby Carrera) about how the city appraised my house as a 3-2 and it is a 4-2, we called the city that day and got it changed, then was told by the loan officer (Gabby Carrera) sorry I already ran it, so then we would have to pay $325 to do a full appraisal if we wanted it done correctly, when all she had to do was run the original one again or she could have waited when we asked her to, which add another 3 weeks to the loan process. The guy who even came out to our house even confirmed with us that when he ran our information through the city's site, it was a 4-2. Ms. Gabby Carrera was ok using false information to run our loan, is it company policy to give out loans based on false information because she was more than happy to do so. We were promised a refund for that money when our house got the full appraised for more but we have never received it. Was told I could get a certain amount when we started this process, then it was changed to a lower amount, then changed again after the re-appraisal to another lower amount even though our house was worth $20,000 more.This was such a headache and time waster to save a few interest points and not get the amount we were told we would get, if they would have told us in the beginning what we would be getting we would have never used this company. We know it take 6-8 weeks to get a home equity loan but all the hoops we had to jump through were insane, and if we had not called Gabby Carrera literally every 3 days to see where we were in the process, it would have taken so much longer. At the very end Ms. Gabby Carrera was going to disperse the money to our credit card company without our permission and luckily we stopped her from doing this or it would have created another disaster. The online process was childish and painstaking. There are no branches where we live and we couldn't make a payment for the appraisals over the phone (are you kidding me it is 2017).
