In the past two years my wife has needed to go into a Rehab enter. The first time was two years ago…read moreafter she had back Surgery. They put her in a facility near where we lived. The facility was nice and seemed to be well equipped but seriously understaffed. It often took a half hour to an hour for an aid or nurse to respond to her call requests. Facility okay, staffing an issue. This time she after having fallen many times in our unit she was hospitalized, They decided to send her to a Rehab Center in Anne Arundel County. This place, though highly rated by Medicare was awful. It was a rather dingy facility in which you were immediately overwhelmed by the smell of urine and feces! It also took an hour or longer for anyone to respond to her calls, often she was told just to "go in your diaper" until we have time for you! The PT/OT facilities were bare-boned and she received barely more than 20 minutes of one or the other during weekdays. And on one of those days they had a group session instead of individual treatment where none of her Rehab needs were addressed! This place was so awful I found myself crying to myself, feeling guilty that she had to stay in this disgusting facility! I fought for and finally received the OK to transfer her to Lorien, Elkridge! I can only describe it as like going from the worst Motel 6 in the world to the Carlton-Ritz! Lorien Elkridge in a very welcoming, clean, well-equipped facility. And the staff, including the those working the front desk, are very welcoming, responsive, kind and caring!! She rarely waits more than 5 to10 minutes when she request assistance. They seem to be eager to get whatever she needs and often do the same for me. The nurse in charge, is on the ball and is willing to put up with my inquires of her medical treatment and requests from me to obtain specific treatments and/or mess (I will admit that my career with the FDA as an expert in both Medical Devices and Pharmaceuticals does give me an unique knowledge base.) She gets OT and PT every weekday, often for as long as an hour each! I can't rave enough about this facility and its staff. If you live near Elkridge you definitely would want to send your loved one her if they need rehab. Heck, even if you don't live near here, I would still recommend you check this facility out.

Beautiful facility but awful care…read more My grandmother was very neglected. She had the worst nacrotic bed sores I've ever seen and she never had any prior to going in. It looked like she was covered in bruises and we learned after she was admitted to the ER that it was the sign of severe dehydration. Staff would lie to us about what my grandmother was doing. They would say she was singing songs in the common areas, but she hadn't been able to do that for years. We would say they had the wrong person and they would insist. We heard a lot of things like that overtime. She also had a friend who couldn't remember names and faces but was able to move around perfectly well, talk to people & engage in activities. Her friend moved in and was dead within a month.

Coming from a one month stay in an understaffed and unqualified place you can imagine what a relief it is to us, to have our loved one in such a wonderful place. My mother was transferred from Northwest Hospital to Future Care Cherrywood on Monday, 9/28/15. The…read moreshiny brochure and the "sales" person who spoke with us during my mom's hospital stay left the impression that this would be a modern, attractive facility. Thinking back, I remember this lady admitting she had never been to this facility. Why hadn't the Regional Care Director for Future Care not visited one of their locations? I quickly found out why.... When I visited Future Care Cherrywoof that evening around 8:30 pm, the reality could not have been farther from the sales pitch. Walking into the small lobby area, I detected an unpleasant fishy smell. The front area had a shiny new-looking sign and some nice decorations, but beyond that point I could see that this place has not been renovated since the 80's. Everything was old, worn-out, and dirty. Chipped paint, dirt in every corner, unidentifiable deposits of what I hoped was food on the hallway floor. In my mom's room, the floor was very dirty, and the filter of the air conditioning unit was caked with dirt & dust. 30-year old furniture, no hangers in the wardrobe, on and on. My mom told me that fish was served for dinner--perhaps an explanation for the fishy smell. My mom was on oxygen at Northwest Hospital--a tube that hooked into a unit in the wall. Here, they roll a large suitcase-sized contraption up to the bed to provide the concentrated humidified O2. It made a loud bubbling noise that competed with the filthy, noisy air conditioning unit. I picked up the TV remote to move it and it was sticky & had bits of food on it! **Two days later, the remote was still dirty. Did I mention the suspicious deposits of some sort of food in the hallway in at least 3 places? The floor was old gray linoleum flecked with brown & black specks designed to hide dirt. Unfortunately, there was too much dirt to hide. That night, my mom was awakened by the sound of a naked man who had wandered into her room & was mumbling gibberish. She pressed the call bell, the responding staff member said something like "Hey you, naked again Mr. ??" Apparently this is a regular occurrence causing no concern. The night of 9/29/15, there were heavy rains in the area. My mom woke up sometime during the night, opened the door to the toilet room, and was greeted by a flooded floor and a steady drip of water coming through a completely soaked ceiling tile. She had noted previously that the ceiling tile was stained by an earlier leak. The nurse led her to the hallway shower room to use that toilet. The next morning, the water was mopped up & the ceiling tile was replaced. I wonder what sort of mold was up there after repeated leaks. Please understand that I didn't walk in with a magnifying glass on the hunt for specks of dirt. My observations were only things I noticed from brief glances. Also, my mom is easy to please and has never complained about the environment in hospitals where she has stayed in the past. The staff was friendly, but the nurse was obviously over-worked & exhausted looking. I can't imagine having to work in those conditions. An even more egregious fault of this facility is that they had none of my mom's medications on the evening she arrived, even though they had several hours notice of her arrival. My mom is on many medications for various life-threatening conditions. She was supposed to get two antibiotic doses each day, but they did not provide this until the next night--two missed doses of antibiotic?! She was also not given medications she needs for anxiety & insomnia and has gotten very little sleep as a result. I'm yanking my mother out of there as soon as I can find another place and reporting this place to the ombudsman and to Medicare. Is it honestly too much to ask for a clean, slightly modern facility that can provide patients with the correct medications in a timely manner? Northwest Hospital was like a four-star hotel in comparison. I asked her nurse to provide a list of what medications my mom was given up to that point. I was told that I would have to speak to the doctor about this because they did not have access to computers so could not print anything. The best she could do was look at her paper list of my mom's meds & compare it against the list I had of my mom's medications. I was not, however, given the requested information of what medications she had actually been given each day.

But I think what was most disappointing/concerning was the appearance of the lunch that was served to the patient. Appeared totally unappetizing and inedible.......really just a plate of maybe mashed sweet potato (?) or carrots(?) and potatos (?)....didn't appear to be any protein and some broken up crackers??!!! How is this acceptable? The two staff people I encountered during my 2 hour visit seemed very pleasant.

Noely asked detailed questions regarding my mom and her needs which was greatly appreciated. I was met with such warmth, kindness, and patience from the team. This facility is OUTSTANDING and the lobby mirrors a hotel. My sincerest apologies team. I could've saved you all time by advising that my mom required hemodialysis, but it was such a pleasure meeting the three wonderful ladies. I can tell that they are passionate about their work and care. Noely took the time to reach out to a sister facility that could accommodate my mom's needs and I am forever grateful. She gave me such reassurance which is invaluable for caregivers. I would encourage anyone in need of care for a loved one to come in and visit this facility.
