I came to Brill after suffering a severe injury to my right elbow. The care I received was superlative. My orthopedist described my right radial head as "shattered" and warned me that return to normal range of motion was unlikely, even after extensive surgery. I walked into Brill physically and emotionally distraught - wondering how I would be able to care for my infant child or regain the ability to write, play my beloved piano, or even tie my own shoes. By my good fortune I was paired with Marta, who over the course of several months got me to a point that surprised even my orthopedist. She was aggressive and tough, but always remained attuned to my body and pain threshold. Her knowledge of my particular injury and the healing process was impressive and she gained my trust immediately. Most importantly, on days when I felt like my future was bleak (or just wanted to give up in frustration) she encouraged me to push through and assured me that progress would be made. Tough but compassionate, determined yet delightful, Marta is getting to me to places, both physically and emotionally, that I doubted I'd reach. Brill is a small practice and I can't imagine getting the same level of focused attention anywhere else (Marta often goes beyond my allotted time to make sure I am getting in all the exercises I need). It's also worth noting that the office is a pleasure to deal with from an administrative perspective and has been particularly helpful navigating complicated insurance issues. Eileen at the front desk is simply delightful and has gone out of her way to make my therapy run as smoothly as possible. I discovered Peggy Brill and Brill PT when a herniated disc in my neck pinched a nerve - for the second time in two years - causing weakness and excruciating pain in my arm, shoulders and neck area. My officemate got in touch with Peggy, who made a point of seeing me the very next day, even before I was able to see my regular doctor. From the beginning, it was apparent that I was in expert hands, which was super important to me as a high energy and very athletic older (I'm 52) individual. Peggy is extremely knowledgeable about the human body, and she quickly picked up my tricks and helped me understand the types of compromises my body was making. With Peggy's help, I was able to complete a marathon swim week in Sardinia and a 75-mile hilly gravel grinder bike race within a few months of injuring myself. She prevented me from running longer than I would have liked, but she was very clear with me that until the nerve fired more consistently in regular testing, I wasn't ready. 7 months after the injury, with lots of PT, daily light yoga and pilates, I began a 30-day running streak that involved completing a 20-minute run a day. After the first 30 days, that streak continued, and I ran daily for 65 days. As the distance has increased, I've stopped maintaining the streak, but I'm still running most days each week, and in a few weeks, I will do my first half marathon since the injury. Following a surfing injury in April 2013 that left my knee with a series of partial ligament tears, I was recommended Brill by a surfing buddy. I worked with Dr. Nicholas Rutigliano - then a newer addition to the team. It was nothing short of a life changing experience (in a good way :) Dr. Rutigliano went way beyond the call of duty, and other PT experiences I've had. Instead of just strengthening muscles around the injury, we went to the core of the reason my ligaments had weakened in the first place, the actual biomechanics of the way I walked! It was intimidating to have to reassess and reform something so basic as your gate when all you want to do is recover from the injury at hand, but I gritted my teeth and followed his (rigorous) course of therapy. It was a holistic, multi-faceted road to recovery - filled with various exercises, weight training, band workouts, swiss ball, swimming, stim, icing, acupuncture - but I was back in the water surfing in only 7 weeks, instead of the 12-15 weeks that the knee specialist suggested would be the absolute minimum (the specialist was amazed at the progress, not thinking it possible). Kudos Dr. Rutigliano and Brill; your methods, dedication and facilities put me on the road to recovery and lifelong attention and deeper appreciation for the body and necessary upkeep and strengthening. After a tear to my rotator cuff, which was diagnosed in December 2013, my orthopedist recommended physical therapy. Brill PT was one of the places on his list and luckily the one that I choose! While Brill gets high marks for its very pleasant facility, what really made it special for me was its professional, experienced and friendly group of therapists and staff. I had the pleasure to work with Andrew for the more than 5 months I was going to therapy for my shoulder injury. When I started working with Andrew, I couldn't raise my left arm and, needless to say, I was in a lot of pain. We both knew that this would be a somewhat lengthy process and I wouldn't be fixed overnight. Over time, however, my condition greatly improved and I was getting stronger and able to do more things that most people take for granted. This was in large part due to Andrew's expertise. He knew which of my tight muscles to manipulate and to accompany that, he gave me appropriate exercises to work on (many of which I will continue to do on a regular basis for a long time to come). When knee pain was threatening to cancel my hiking trip to Morocco my Orthopedist gave me a prescription for PT 3 times a week. With my complicated work/travel/commuting schedule this seemed next to impossible until I discovered Brill Physical Therapy right down the hall from my office! They saw me that same day. Peggy Brill reassured me that they could help. After 3 weeks of treatment I was able to hike in the mountains with no problem at all. Once back from my trip I wanted to see if they could help chronic back pain that I've had for 40 years. I have been a patient of Brill Physical Therapy for quite some time. My most recent visit was due to a chronic knee problem. My therapist Nicholas Rutigliano was extremely helpful in my recovery. He first evaluated how I walked and noticed that each step I took, my alignment was quite off, which may have aggravated a lot of the tendons around my knee joints. Each session was hard work and there was no way to slack as Nick worked closely with me in strengthening my muscles, correcting my every move with each exercise and also loosening the muscles with intense rubdowns. Nick was patience enough to explain particular muscles and tendons and their functionality along with 3D images from his iPad. Who does this?? Even after my sessions were over, he was thoughtful enough to ask how I was doing and also allowed me to contact him anytime if I had more concerns and questions. Nick is professional, skillful and 100% AWESOME. Today, every time I walk, jog, run, squat or jump I am mindful of my form because I remember what Nick has taught me. Nearly 20 years ago a doctor referred me to Brill Physical Therapy for lower back pain and I've gone back a number of times since then mainly for pain related to sports injuries or aging. Peggy and her other physical therapists really know what they're doing. They are great at diagnosing problems and treating them. Typically, I've had severe pain in my shoulder or lower back and they are able to locate the source of the pain (usually it's actually coming from my neck or spine, not where I feel the pain) and with one treatment I walk out feeling much better -- a few more and I'm a new man. Peggy told me my lower back pain was because my core muscles (abdomen and back) were weak, and she gave me a bunch of exercises to do. She also has a book with an exercise program to strengthen your core. I really got into it -- my core got rock hard -- and I haven't had any lower back pain from weakness for years. One other big plus, they are super flexible: if you have to change an appointment -- even last minute -- they are very accommodating, and if you're in a lot of pain they'll fit you in when they're already booked up. Peggy Brill was recommended to me by an acupuncturist, who said several patients had had good results with her. I'd had a problem for at least fifteen years with chronically sprained ankles, and hadn't found lasting relief from other therapy programs, so I decided to try Peggy. Am I glad I did! Peggy has laser-like diagnostic skills. She immediately zeroed in on the problem--I could tell right away that she was spot on--and put me on a guided exercise program to address the situation. I saw improvement within a few weeks, and after a couple of months, the situation has fully resolved. No more ankle sprains!! After all these years, I can't believe it. Her hands-on work is marvelous, right on target and just the right amount of pressure. I started to see Andrew at Brill twice a week following an injury to my leg while running. Andrew and the entire staff are excellent at what they do. As my recovery progressed Andrew constantly monitored my situation and altered the treatments accordingly. If you are coming from work they have gym clothes you can change into for your treatment. Brill runs on time, I never had to wait to start my PT sessions. Peggy Brill is Brill-ant! She is the real deal when it comes to physical therapists. Peggy and her staff saved me after a recent neck injury. Even before the MRI, Peggy knew what she was dealing with and began the appropriate treatment. She takes her time and develops an individualized plan for your treatment. She then documents your plan so in the event she is not there, which is hardly ever, her staff can jump right in and treat you accordingly. Her second in command, Shelly is equally as brilliant. Peggy Brill designed a simple but effective set of daily exercises addressing my specific physical issues that have tremendously improved my comfort during the last months of pregnancy. Peggy. Is. Magic. I have been treated by Peggy since fall of 2014. The first time I went in my wrist had given out (repetitive stress from carrying boxes). I could not really grasp anything. With an ultra sound and gel she made that problem go away and it never came back! For my pre-arthritic neck and wrists she has been amazing about giving me exercises to do at home with varying levels of resistance bands, and I even have a daily alarm on my phone to do a "Brill Chicken" at 4:30 when I get out of work.
