There really aren't enough Yelp stars in the world to adequately reflect the above-and-beyondness of JFPT. I am so lucky that this was the first and only physical therapy I ever experienced. Bad lower backs run in my family. I always did a lot of yoga and Pilates (and took a lot of Advil) for the pain, but at some point that wasn't working so well anymore. The day before New Year's Eve I felt some pain in my right leg. This rapidly worsened into two solid weeks of the worst pain I'd ever experienced. I guess I herniated a disc at L4/L5 and a nerve was getting chomped. Thank goodness I was referred to orthopedist Lisa Bartoli MD who sent me straight to Jeremy Ballabon at JFPT. Physical therapy turned out to be an unexpectedly and wildly affirming experience. The first person I spoke with was Idelsi, who I think is the practice manager, and who was patient and easygoing as she walked me through how JFPT works with my insurance. She made the whole process of getting started/set up easy and quick, which mattered a lot because I was in pain and because that stuff is always complicated and exhausting. Meanwhile, Jeremy is some kind of wizard I think. His ability to observe you walk or move or lie on a table or whatever and figure out what is going wrong in your body -- and then explain in totally understandable terms what he sees and how the work is going to help your specific issues -- and make sure you really FEEL the difference when you hit the right form so you know what to aim for when you practice -- is magical. Plus, he's super fun to work with (even if he is a Yankees fan). Four months later, I feel so strong, my posture is better, I stand and walk better, I sleep better, my couch is comfy again, and I feel like I can do any activity I want without worrying about my back. I have drastically fewer hours of back pain every week than I have had at any previous point in my adult life. And that would be more than enough in itself but all the work takes place in a beautiful, sun-filled studio where everyone prioritizes kindness and good humor without ever sacrificing seriousness of purpose. Every single person I have worked with at JFPT (or even just gabbed with) has been so lovely and given me a feeling of belonging. I've gotten unending affirmation and support. I never expected any of that! and I'm certain it has contributed to my rehab and recovery just as much as the physical conditioning. I'm so impressed. Nothing is ever this good. Thank goodness JFPT exists. Now that I am all healed up we are going to transition from physical therapy to personal training -- I feel so safe knowing this team has the knowledge to prevent me from hurting myself and will make sure I just keep getting stronger. read more

I was fitted for orthotics by James Fowler Physical Therapy, and they coordinated with their specialist Tamir Kfir. The orthotic inserts are supportive, and they're surprisingly easy to insert into sneakers for everyday city walking and gym training. They have helped to lessen the back and knee pain James and his team have been treating me for. I even use the orthotics in rollerskates, and it's easier to focus less on balance and just enjoy skating. They make my skates and shoes more comfortable, as if they were custom fit to me. I have noticed a difference in my stability, balance, and control that is helping me improve my skating and learn new skills. I don't skate without them now! read more

I had a back injury and double discectomy in 2002. After my surgery and my first relapse (2006), I tried other physical therapists without success. This office was able to teach me how to leave from their care and live in a way that would support my lower back day to day to avoid future relapses. Their treatments were also different from anything I'd received before. I was so impressed and am still, to this day, living an active life without pain. Super grateful. read more

We are relatively new long-distance runners, and we were training for our first marathon in spring 2017. We over-trained, and we had some injuries, and so we went to James Fowler Physical Therapy. His team became part of our Marathon team, in that they provided not only the therapy, but also the insights, knowledge, strategies, and support for our adventure. They were able to fix most of our physical issues and help us heal others over time with sound strengthening and stretching exercises. Their space is quite beautiful and has a very nice, professional yet relaxed atmosphere. We finished the marathon, and now we're training for our next one! There's so much noise and confusion online, admittedly it is not easy to evaluate who is indeed a skilled physical therapy practitioner. Having spent the past 16 months working with JFPT I've come to appreciate the level of care, the attention to detail, organization and kindness that is so present there. James takes a very personal interest in every patient, he spends time with you, listens, encourages and helps you get better. During my time at JFPT I have worked through two major injuries and James has helped every step of the way -- from the dark moments to the small physical victories which mean so much when you are healing. In 2007, riding my bike over by the Hudson River, I was hit and run by a taxi. After 2 surgeries, I had been in physical therapy at several local spots in the city. One famous for injured acrobats and HSS surgeons themselves. The other run by a good staff, but overbooked and busy. Eventually, I progressed to the point of being able to get around on my own with a cane. I recovered a good deal of stength and some agility, but I was still prone to pain and inflammation throughout my body. It could set me back. I practiced the protocols at home over time, but did not have the sense of wellbeing and stability I needed. Then, I fell, and needed two more surgeries. That's when I found Fowler. I learned how to walk, climb stairs, strengthen my core, and be profoundly directed, not just by the advanced training, but by the wholistic approach to movement, stretching, massage, the breath, and overall health, mental, physical, and spiritual. At Fowler, each staff member is just the best. Considerate, attentive, hopeful, realistic, and kind. The wonderful aspect is that when I lose my step, I can always go back. Everyone is welcome and then, welcomed back. The freedom to develop outside and in therapy go hand and hand. Not to rush. To pay attention to my skills, but also my feeling of confidence in my physical world. I will never be able to run because of my surgeries, but I don't have to run away from that or other physical issues I hold in my body. I have been going to James Fowler Physical Therapy for almost a year now( I won't go into details about my health issues since it's too personal & too long in a public forum). I'll get to the point. PT is about one hour session. It's been extremely helpful. I have noticed a positive difference in my body and my posture improvement as well. Manual therapy by Karen & Terry are excellent. Neuro-muscular re-education program is excellent. Linda, Laura, Meghan, Katy...Thank you ladies! Robert and Pedro are very helpful too w/ scheduling( thanks gentlemen)! I also like the fact that JFPT doesn't feel like a typical medical setting. As you know, most medical offices have harsh florescent lighting, but JFPT has a pleasant, soft lighting in their beautiful loft. I tore my rotator cuff in 2015. Four years, two steroid shots and four physical therapists later my shoulder is pain-free and I can move it through a full range-of-motion. After 22 sessions of physical therapy the view is quite different from when I first entered James Fowler PT anxious about the condition of my aching back. And wondering: would I be able to hike and enjoy the same physical capabilities as before. The answer came from Karen Wong, my Physical Therapist, who took me through my evaluation and treatment. Since the condition of my spine can't change, we started core training, strengthening the muscles that support the spine: abs, glutes and hip muscles among others. During the course of my treatment we covered: correct postures for sitting and standing, walking, squatting and lying in bed watching television. Additionally, every session included a complete set of exercises observed by my trainers/ movement specialists: Christian, Linda and Emily. This is the best physical therapy organization I have ever encountered. Prior to the weeks I have spent there re-learning and healing, I would have said that no such place could have existed. I was referred to James Fowler Physical Therapy by Dr. Nawabe at Hospital for Special Surgery, in order to better prepare myself for faster recovery after the surgery which we anticipated. Amazingly, at the 8 week followup session, I was told that, due to the positive impact of the therapy, I was no longer considered a candidate for surgery, and that I simply could continue and achieve the same or better result. The credit for this incredible new diagnosis belongs to each of the superlative people tasked with care and management in this space. It must be said that literally every single individual with whom I have engaged in this practice has been beyond helpful. My therapist, Christina Ramirez, has worked tirelessly to ensure the best result from our efforts, and has provided a program which has been nothing short of miraculous in its results. The trainers, e.g. Christian, Karen, Marissa, Zoë, et al, comprise a list of the most superbly competent and exceedingly mindful professionals one could possibly hope to enlist in the re-engineering of the body toward patterns of structural health. I have never had this kind of encouraging and clarifying attention focused on remedying my physical difficulties, minute by minute, repetition by repetition. Robert and the administrative and scheduling/processing personnel --especially Autumn-- are talented and organized in a manner unknown to virtually every medical-related facility in my experience. Access to online resources, useful email reminders, the changing facilities, the training area, the appropriate volume of unobtrusive music, the natural light, the seating area, the painless form submission process, excellent billing procedures, the well-designed training floor, fastidiously kept and up-to-date equipment, clean and comfortable manual therapy tables...I could go on and on. Having been subjected to the frustrations and inadequacies of the attention-deficit PT "factories" that are out there, I can say without reservation that James Fowler Physical Therapy is what physical therapy is meant to be, and that I am profoundly grateful to have received these wonderful people's care. read more
