I discovered Brioch Doree for the first time in LAX terminal 4. I was waiting for a flight and got myself a sandwich - baguette with ham, brie and thinly sliced apple. Oh yeah baby. It was great.
Then a few years later I moved to Paris and while I tried to frequent unique and authentic places as much as possible, I couldn't resist the BD lure....
A friend came to visit me and I insisted on taking her for a toasty sandwich and their moelleux au chocolate (aka: heavenly little bit of perfection). We sat down, inhaled our sandwiches, then took a deep breath and dove into our moelleux (plural- I don't share dessert) and coffees. There were groans and sighs of appreciation, but no conversation. Then I came to my last bite, which I scooped up with my fork and raised it with a smile when it suddenly toppled off my fork, bounced off the table and onto the dirty, slimy, chain restaurant floor. My friend and I looked at each other for a brief moment and she just nodded. I reached under the table, picked up the little chocolate bite and popped it into my mouth, hair, grit and all. It was worth it.
The Piccadilly location is equally wonderful. Don't forget, it's a chain. And the people who work there would rather not. But get yourself a moelleux au chocolat for crying out loud! read more
