There is a small bureau de change on site for your immediate currency needs. There are four desks for customers to be seen at, all manned by really friendly staff. The uniforms are bright and go well against the white walls - makes you feel in the holiday mood. There is a range of brochures on the walls behind the staff members meaning you have to ask for a brochure, but these are given willingly without any pressure. The staff are really good at making you feel welcome and take an interest in your holiday requirements. I have always felt that they have brought my holiday to life before its even begun. It has its own little train station, yet it's a major hub for the whole nation, and I've only been here once but I definitely liked it. It is a major junction for Wiltshire though and has direct connections to Reading Taunton Penzance London-Paddington Cardiff Portsmouth Swindon Bristol (Temple Meads) Weymouth and London-Waterloo. It also has an amazing Station Cafe and could only score 5 stars.

It's all a far cry from former times: the station was opened in 1848, on a line from Chippenham, with services being extended to Warminster in 1851, Weymouth and Bath in 1857 and Salisbury in 1856. It continued as a country junction until 1900, when it was rebuilt in its present form as the first part of the new through route from London to Plymouth via Castle Cary. Through services began in 1906, and so began Westbury's golden age as a major junction station. It didn't last long: in 1933, a bypass line was built around the station to the south, for non-stop London-Plymouth expresses. The introduction of High Speed Trains in 1980s brought more decline, as the London-Paignton trains were routed via Bristol, the engine depot closed, staffing at the station was reduced, and the old platform one was closed. To-day, Westbury is expanding rapidly as a dormitory town for Bath and Bristol, and commuter traffic is increasing as a result, to some 300,000 passengers a year. There is an intermittent main-line service to London and Taunton, but the main services are the half-hourly Bristol-Portsmouth trains, and the two-hourly Weymouth service. Historically,…read moreFirst Great Western hasn't been very good on the customer satisfaction list, but in the recent years they have dramatically improved their services to near perfection. In my experience, they have never been late or cancelled and have almost always arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule (which is always handy so you can grab an unexpected cup of coffee!). The trains themselves are of a very high standard. Each seat is full length (unlike First Capital Connect) and the floor has carpet on it which is a pleasant luxury. There is no chewing gum stuck to the seats, or graffiti etched onto the tables. Everything is almost spotlessly clean. In fact sometimes I wonder if I am in First Class, it is that nice! There is quite a large buffet on most of the trains (most definitely the ones headed to London Paddington) which although isn't cheap, certainly is no more expensive than the stands at the train stations. Most, if not all of the staff are friendly and very helpful. One down side I would say is that I find it hard to open the doors as you have to reach outside the window and open them from the exterior of the train which (if you are on the short side like me) is pretty difficult. There is also a large gap from the train to most platforms which again is difficult especially if you have a lot of luggage. However, I have found on many occasions that the train staff rush to help you if you are struggling which I think is great. There are toilets on board and are almost always clean, however no toilet on a train is perfect really! On board travel magazines are provided free of charge and also an emergency exit information booklet is on every seat (it almost feels like an aeroplane!). A word of warning though - if your ticket is booked in advance you MUST get on that exact train which is stated on your ticket. If you miss it, or hop on an earlier train you are fined a lot of money. Also, I have heard that if you sit in a seat already reserved then a £20 fine is given to you. Price wise, First Great Western trains are very reasonable if booked in advance online through their website. A single from Bristol Temple Meads to Gatwick Airport off peak with a Young Persons Railcard is £7.60 which is very cheap for the distance travelled. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend First Great Western, primarily for the fast, cheap and reliable service.

There's not a great deal by way of amenities - no fancy waiting rooms, refreshments or toilet facilities. It's manned several hours a day for ticket sales and assistance, and there is a decent sized car park right next to it. Mainly used for commuting upline to nearby Bath and Bristol. It's pleasant enough and there's shops selling snacks within ten minutes wlaking distance so it's not out in the sticks or anything. Beware rush-hour though as it gets absolutely choc-a-block on the station around then!
