I just went to see Beauty and the Beast Saturday evening, and it was amazing!! The musical was surreal and close to the original animation. My husband and I both cried because it was sentimental of how we related to the actual animated film. My only advice would be to NOT take babies or children who aren't capable of sitting still and listening to the show. The first half of the show was interrupted by a couple allowing their baby and toddler to continue to whine and repeatedly ask for her mama. After a while, the dad finally left with his baby. Naturally, it was only after attracting some attention from others that the situation became evident. We adore babies/children; however, this was not the place for them. I blame the parents for being self-centered and ignoring their baby by allowing her to whine and waiting until almost the end of the first half of the show to excuse themselves out. I wish the staff would have noticed and stepped in. They're usually vocal when it comes to food or pictures and should also pay attention to whining babies. read more

Wow so I finally bought some last minute tickets to see Life of Pi! The show and cast was amazing. The venue is located downtown and if you go see an evening event you'll get treated to a beautiful backdrop of a towering skyline full of twinkling lights. Parking in the adjacent garage is $15. Next time I will get there at least an hour prior to get lower level parking. We arrived 15 minutes prior to show time and it took us at least 10 minutes to park and walk into the performance center. And we waited for 25 minutes just to get out of the parking garage when the show was over. Lesson learned. Everyone was dressed from casual (boo) to dressy/business casual (ladies in sundresses and some had heels or little sandals and men were in slacks and dress shirts or polo shirts and some men had suits or jackets or just a buttoned down collared shirt and khakis.) Personally, I dont like to go see a performance and see people in shorts and t shirts especially on a Saturday night performance, It runs the gamut in case you're wondering "how should I dress?" Intermission offered a full bar and snacks and candy. Tickets for our seating area were $128 pp next time I'll sit closer and pay more. Overall we had a fun time! read more

Shucked. The 2023 Tony award winner Broadway show. The troop is touring US, and this is their stop in Houston, for a short 1 week only. And..its a must watch for everyone. Comedy, story, mistakes, love, repentance, make-up and a happy ending..all the while learning a lot about corn! Cannot say more and be a spoiler, but I will say this....its worth Every penny you pay. It is simply hilarious. The crowd was resounding with laughter soo often. The songs are electrifying ! The energy they brought with their Voice was one important thing, but the lyrics, the synchronised steps, it was simply commendable ! (Audience clapped loudest for the 'independent' song.) Parking is in the adjoining building and its a huge area costing $15 per vehicle. To avoid rush, come atleast 30 min early. The show is in the Sarofim Hall of the Hobby center, which is a huge hall that has a seating capacity of 2650 ! ....compared to that the Zika Hall has a capacity of 500...the popularity of this show can be gauged right there. The balcony that overlooks the city hall (and all the Valet parking mess created downstairs....)is worth a 'selfie' with downtown in the background. There is enough food going around, ofcourse drinks too- both alcoholic and nonalcoholic. There was a seating area with tables where you get your food as self-service and seat yourself. As part of Shucked promotion, they have a tiny shop with mugs, cups, sweatshirts, Tshirts etc promoting the show as well. A fun Broadway show so close to home, a Tony award winner, a Thanksgiving treat indeed ! Mussst watch! We went and saw The Lion King... the staff was so great, no matter where we went they were so kind. The seats are a little small if you're a bigger person, but they're not horrible. There's really not a bad seat. Definitely recommend valet. The wait after the show for valet is worth not getting stuck in the parking garage for the same amount of time or longer. Every year, I fail because the notifications change--and this year it was just a random email with no time to prepare. Once again, I was stuck in the same seats due to poor communication. So lucky to live in a city that has access to touring Broadway shows. Most recently saw Six-The Musical. Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced, beheaded, survived. Great celebration of Girl Power in this energy packed nonstop musical without any intermissions. Over the years, our family has enjoyed so many great shows. Favorites include Wicked, Hamilton, the original Beauty and The Beast (world premiere before it went to Broadway), Bombay Dreams, The Lion King, The Book of Mormon and Hairspray. Season passes are available or purchase individual tickets. The theater is so comfortable and conveniently located in downtown Houston. Step out on the outside veranda during intermission to enjoy the lights during the holidays. Street parking is free after hours if you are lucky enough to find a space. I was most impressed with the quick and steady process to the restrooms during intermission. In and out in less than 15 minutes. Such a beautiful theatre! My girlfriends and I came to this location on March 2, 2022 to see my gf's favorite Broadway show of all time, Hamilton! When we arrived, we were amazed by how nice this theatre is! The outside was lit up beautifully! When we walk in, the inside is just as beautiful! The staff working was great! They got us through security with no issues! The ushers escorted us to our seats and over all, the atmosphere was amazing! I also appreciate that they were being careful with the pandemic and had all the safety protocols in place! We can't wait to come back in the future for more shows!! read more

When I heard that The Houston Symphony was paying tribute to the music of Whitney Houston, I knew I HAD to be there. I've been a dedicated fan of Whitney since I was 4yrs old. ***WARNING*** Before I go any further, I want to prevent someone from making the same mistake I did. I didn't look at the address on my TICKET, instead I looked up the address of the houston symphony and went there first.BIG MISTAKE. The houston symphony is holding all summer concerts at the Hobby Center. Go there instead or at least double check your ticket :- *** Due to my ENORMOUS mistake above, we ended up being late for the concert. Bummer. At the Hobby Center, the valet is $20 and self-parking is $15. We found street parking down the street and walked to the center. Unfortunately, it's a very sketchy part of town to be walking in. There are a lot of unsavory characters around especially underneath a nearby bridge. It's a little scary so be careful if you decide to walk. When we got inside the venue, security made us walk through a metal detector. They also check purses and do pat downs if necessary. I was very nervous (because we were 30mins late), that I would make us miss even more of the show by not being able to find our seats. But, the HC has no shortage of Ushers to help. One directed us to the elevator and our floor, one helped us when we got off on the wrong floor and another showed us to our seats, Inside the auditorium was spacious but not overwhelmingly big, the seats were comfy and the temperature was perfect and quite comfortable. The show was AMAZING. The symphony, main performer, and the backup singers were all INCREDIBLE. We unfortunately missed the most famous Whitney song but, we still had a great time. At the end of the evening, the doors open right onto the street and the lobby area was large enough so that there was no congestion. It was such a great evening and I can't wait to see another show at the Hobby! read more

I've been here a couple times to watch some awesome musicals: Hamilton, the first time around; and The Book of Mormon, the second time around. Parking situation: you can either do valet parking or park in the garage attached to the venue. Either way, it's going to cost you. I'm not sure how much they charge for valet parking but I believe garage parking will run you $15. Personally, I would rather park on the streets since I'm willing to walk the distance (street parking can be found probably around five to six blocks away, or if you're luck enough, within a couple of blocks), or park in one of the private lots a few blocks away and let me tell you why. Street parking is free after 6 pm so that obviously beats $15 parking. Private lot parking will probably cost around $10. Either option will let you in and out quickly vs. having to wait for valet to get your car or to get stuck inside the venue's garage trying to drive out which could take a while. The last time I was here, my friend parked in the garage, and I parked on the streets off of Travis and Walker. After the show ended, we decided to go grab some food at Mai's on Milam. He proceeded to his car in the garage and I walked to my car. Guess what? Even after walking the five blocks, I still beat my friend to Mai's by A LOT. That should tell you something about how long it took him to get out the garage. The venue: the theater is small enough that even if you're sitting at the very back of the theater, you'll still have a pretty good view of the stage. Lots of people do dress up when attending the theater (suits, dresses, etc) but there's not really a dress code. You can wear your polo and jeans and sneakers if you want. As long as you look presentable, you'll be given entry. The lines to the bars do get pretty long. But they do have several bars so you should find one with the shortest line. The two times I've been here, I notice that the bars all the way at the end of the venue usually have the shortest lines. During intermission, the line to the restroom gets really long. But the men's room line usually moves pretty quickly. The women's room line is a lot slower for obvious reasons. I would definitely come back whenever there are other Broadway shows that I'm interested in seeing. And by the way, guys, The Book of Mormon was REALLY good. Just remember that anything by Trey Parker and Matt Stone might be slightly (or a lot) offensive to some. read more

I'm not much the theatre buff as I'd like to be -- and oh, how I love going to the theatre -- but I know what I like, and I know an entertaining, inspiring and jaw-dropping show when I see it. I had the opportunity of screening "Spring Awakening" this evening, and I have to say it was a spectacular show. (And I think I'm going to come back for a second viewing.) Broadway Across America did a fabulous and tasteful job pumping up the city for this stellar show. I can't tell you how many friends of mine were excited to catch this musical tonight and in the coming days. Broadway Across America brings Broadway to more than 40 different cities, thankfully including Houston. Shame on me for missing "The Lion King," "Avenue Q" and "The Color Purple," but I do look forward to catching the next few shows: "A Bronx Tale" (with -- in my opinion -- badboy older man hottie Chazz Palminteri), "Legally Blond" (in Austin), "Wicked" and "Avenue Q" (in Austin) and "The Wizard of Oz." YES! My favorite childhood movie! Look forward to taking my folks to that one -- as if I don't play that movie enough reminiscing with them at their home. Whoa. Now that I'm checking out Austin's page and bookmarking every show to buy tickets, I'm getting a little offended. But that's probably because most of these musicals already toured Houston and I just missed them. Blah. Tickets are reasonably priced at the mid 20s and higher, and seating at the Hobby Center leaves no bad seat in the house ... unless you happen to sit by a typical Texan madam with large hair. Parking can be done street side or in the lots along infront and behind the Hobby Center at $7 a vehicle. If you make any resolution this year, I'd say it'd be to get more involved in theatre companies in the city, either by becoming a member, or just relaxing and enjoying fabulous entertainment with your family. I ordered a season subscription on June 11th. I received my tickets on September 28th to find that one of the shows I selected, Griswold's Broadway Vacation, had been replaced by another show, without any prior notice of the change. I was not interested in seeing the new show so I contacted guest services and asked for a refund for that show. They responded and said that all sales were final. I replied back and said that I can understand that all sales are final on the shows that I selected and purchased. I should not have been randomly given a ticket to a show that I did not wish to see. They again snapped back and said all sales were final and they had a right to give me tickets to any show they felt I would enjoy. What?!?!? I purchased tickets to specific shows. What right do they have not to honor my purchase and to give me tickets to shows THEY feel I would enjoy??? I went back and forth for a few days and they continued to dismiss my concern and said they would not refund me. I wasn't asking for a refund for all the shows in my package, just the one that they replaced. They finally came back and said that they would release the ticket to the show I did not choose and give me a $32 credit. The ticket I paid for was $91.50. Again, this did not make sense. This nonsense with them continued for several days. I called to try to speak to someone and explained what happened. She said that it did not sound right and I should receive a refund. She said someone would call me the next day. No one ever called. It wasn't until I filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office for consumer fraud that they replied. Now they said that they would release my ticket and that I would have to pay an increased price for the other tickets since they were not a package subscription anymore. What?!?!??! This is getting even crazier. So now you are canceling the ticket, not refunding me AND charging me additional money...? It gets better... they then said I would lose my subscription "benefits" (Worthless benefits I wouldn't use anyway). I told them if they are canceling my subscription, then they needed to refund my $25 subscription fee they charged and the full $91.50, for the ticket to the show I did not select and were releasing. Their response was...guess...."all sales are final." So you are releasing my ticket I paid $91.50 for, canceling my subscription and not refunding me for any of it, but yet trying to charge me more money?!?!?! Make it make sense! I eventually had to call my bank and open up a fraud dispute. The bank investigated and sided in my favor. I received a FULL refund for $299.50. After this was done, I got an email the next day from TUTS guest services saying that they have made an exception and they would refund me my money, but that they have blocked my account from doing further business with them. Um...1. You did not do me a favor and make an exception. The BANK refunded me due to TUTS fraudulent activity. 2. The bank already blocked TUTS from continuing to charge my card, so I did not need TUTS to block my account, as it was already determined by ME that I would not be doing business with them based on their poor customer service and fraudulent activity. This was not my first poor experience with TUTS. Several years ago I had purchased a season subscription. My tickets did not arrive before my first show. I had ordered the tickets so many months in advance that the first show came and went and I had forgotten. I got an email asking how I enjoyed my show (as if they cared) and I contacted them and said that I missed the show because I never received my ticket. They told me it was MY fault (of course). I don't know why I even bothered trying to do business with them again. I hope these two bad experiences will be enough to deter you from doing business with these unprofessional crooks. There are sooooo many amazing local community theaters in Houston. Please support them rather than going to the overpriced shows at TUTS and risk having a horrible experience as I did. I would hate for anyone to have to deal with their poor customer service. It's a shame they are so corrupt. read more

This venue is absolutely beautiful! The performance y'all is gorgeous and there are very few bad seats. I was here to attend The Color Purple and I had box seats. My ticket stated I had an obstructed view but when I actually got to the theater the seats were perfect. The only obstruction was a speaker slightly blocking view of any actors located stage left. The prices were pricey but pretty average. The parking garage is close but can fill to capacity pretty quick. I suggest getting there early to ensure you get a spot. It is a 6 level garage with the first few levels reserved for valet. After the show it took over 30 minutes or so to get out of the garage due to traffic. Despite that I will definitely be back as I enjoy the arts! read more

This year, we decided to book season passes to Broadway at the Hobby Center. I will say that as far as getting in and out of the center and the over all ambiance this place has got it. I mean for anyone who has been to NYC to a broadway theater... Our version is better! They might have the clout but we've got the comfort and looks. I found the wine selection and price lacking, but there were plenty of spirits to allow me to forgive the rather poor attempt at cab that they served me, but all in all for a great date night, with flare, this package will be well worth the investment.... I will have to find a different place to review the productions... but the opener Cats was about the stupidest thing I ever sat through. read more

While I did not expect much from "Spring Awakening" I was plesently surprised. Broadway Across America is awesome because they bring this show and others to Houston... helping to make the art scene down here that much greater. I defiantly hope to make another show this season or next! With tickets starting in the $20-30 range I can actually afford to go. I defiantly recommend parking on the side streets for free rather than shelling out the money to park in the garage at the Hobby Center. It was GaGREAAATTTTTTTTT!!!! The Ga is silent! I came here in February for Cirque Dreams: illumination but came back again now for Wicked. This company brings great acts to Houston. It's nice to be able to have such great culture along with food, and many other things is such a diverse city. Wicked itself made for a wonderful "Broadway" experience. I had heard so much about this show and was wondering if it would live up to the hype. It did indeed and surpass it in every way possible. The most fun I've had in a LONG time. The show itself was comical in the dialog, the special effects were memorizing, but the thing that stood out the most was the set. It was so cool to see how the stage was transformed in between scenes with such intricate backgrounds. I want to come back for Billy Elliot or Mamma Mia! read more

Great venue! I've only ever been here when it comes to watching a theater show or Broadway show, and it's the perfect spot for it. It's nice for Theater under the stars, because when you look up, there are stars in the sky as if you were outside. There's a bar on pretty much every floor (except for first, when you walk in). There's plenty of room everywhere you go and the restrooms are typically clean. The parking garage can be crazy when leaving - I've always aimed to be one of the first to leave because if you wait too long and follow the crowd, there will be a line to form for the elevator and then the line to get out of the parking garage will be a while. Typical traffic situation when it comes to venues with large crowds! I need to see how much their valet service costs. read more

I wouldn't say that I'm the biggest theater buff but I do love my musicals and this is the best place for it. This is right next to the aquarium, hard rock, the blue fish and all kinds of other places since it in downtown. The traffic can get pretty congested whenever there is a show so make sure that you get there early. If you would like to get there when the doors open get there at night. There are plenty of accommodations when you get inside. They have full bars and an area where you can eat. The selections are generally salads, pastas, paninis, and plantain chips. My favorite are the salads. You get to choose between a lunch or dinner size. The selection for toppings are too many to list. Plantain chips are delicious too. Around 7:30pm is when the shows start and opening nights land on Tuesdays. The bars do get packed before the show so come early. Also, no open drinks allowed in the theaters but the loophole is that they sell "sippy cups" that you can take your drinks into the theater. The productions are always so grand but so far my favorite musical I have seen is The Book of Mormon. My least favorite is......... And I will keep that to myself. They always have ushers there in order for you to find your seats. Fun fact: don't be that person that shows up late. They let you in but it always seems to be the person in the middle of the row. It's disruptive and rude. Plus I do not want your ass in my face while you say excuse me or sorry (even though I know you're not). So after a show, like any show, the traffic is atrocious. You might as just lay back and socialize. Or you can look rude and desperate excusing themselves right before the actors took their bows. This place is always accommodating and professional. Broadway Across America brought me two performances last year -- Catch Me If You Can and Les Miserables. I don't know whether to blame the Hobby Center for the Arts or BAA for Les Miserables but the technical crew was really off the mark. I could see house lights coming on and off as well as horrible sound mixing the entire first act. This is a big deal for theater buffs because we love the harrowing moments and songs that Jean Valjean and Fantine introduce the musical with. SO DISTRACTING! Catch Me If You Can. Broadway Across America seasin virgin! I had TUTS last year. They are both very good, just depend on the line-up which one I go with. They both perform at the Hobby Center, a great theatre. I have sat in several areas of the theatre and there is not really a bad section, though my favorite "spoiled" section is the mezzanine. The ligting, sound and productions are very good. They now allow you to bring snacks and drinks into the theatre. Even adult beverages if you purchase one of their adult sippie cups can be taken into the theatre. read more

I just finished my first season in Houston and New Orleans (simultaneously) and I was blown away. I've always loved theater, particularly Broadway and off Broadway, and was floored by how good the road shows are. Some of the shows actually have the original Broadway cast--like Young Frankenstein. As a season ticket holder, you get to go to all the shows and you get first dibs on tickets for special engagements. Wicked-tickets-first-row kind of dibs. No bribes or other "favors" need be exchanged. The only downside is that you have tickets to *every* show with a season ticket. I like going to every show, but I could tell that not everyone around me does. I ended up trading for tickets to Avenue Q in NOLA and was in the upper-crust-stodgy-old-money section. And let me tell you, they did not crack a smile for the whole performance! They were almost as funny as the puppets on stage. read more

Just over 2 years ago, I went to my first Broadway show in New York. It was an amazing experience, and I kept thinking about it, and wanting more! I actually made it back to New York one more time and got to catch yet another Broadway show, and it just confirmed that I was hooked! Since then, I've purchased season tickets to both Austin and Houston shows, and I have never left disappointed. I've seen Avenue Q, Spring Awakening (TWICE!), Spamalot, Grease, and the list goes on... and tomorrow I will be seeing Billy Elliott! The prices are reasonable - especially compared to what you would pay in New York. There are lots of dining establishments in the area to make a night of it as well! Please make sure you check out these shows! You will not be disappointed. :) read more

I liked the covered walkway in between the parking garage and the theater, and was relatively pleased with the amount of stalls in the women's restroom. I did not like how painfully bad the view the boxed seats offered (stay away from box eight), the three dollar upcharge to bring beverages into the theater for a souvenir sippy cup, nor the ticketing practice of having sold the majority of the seats before they were available online. In general, I think the venue in Austin is better. I wish Beautiful: the Carole King Story had toured there. read more

This is a very beautiful venue that is fairly easy to get around. We had great seats on the front of the back balcony and everything on stage was in view. From where I was sitting, it looked like the balcony/private booth seats on the side had a terrible and view. It was easy getting around the sound was great. We saw Book of Mormon when I went and it was my first time there. The only improvement could say would be necessary is maybe more options at the bar and a little more leg room where the seats are. read more

Doesn't get much better than BAA. I've seen many off broadway shows and they just don't compare. The talent that is show cased and the sets that are designed are amazing. I never leave a show disappointed. The only thing I'll knock on them about is the number of under studies that perform due to actors not being able to. Rarely is there ever a show that doesn't have a substitute. read more
