After eight or nine months of Miller being closed for renovations, my friend, and I went to see what they had done yesterday and have to say, I was disappointed. I can only assume that most of the renovations were behind the scenes in the theater itself because the outside left me wanting! Firstly, there were some nice improvements like trees. They did try to put in some plants, but I have to say that was the biggest disappointment. It looked like someone had just thrown some random plants around those trees in. It seemed like a very amateurish job. The second big disappointment was they have this huge Miller sculpture sign on the top of the hill where people sit to watch shows. People completely cover that hill during major events and that big monstrosity is only going to keep people from being able to see the show, not to mention that I'm sure some kids are going to try to climb that thing so it won't just be an obstruction, it will be a potential safety hazard. If they had to put it up at all,, they should've put it at the base of the hill on the back side. It will still be visible from Herman Park Drive. Other than those things I can't really see that much improvement. I love going to Miller! My one big suggestion is to take that sign off the hill before someone gets hurt. And there's probably going be a ton of complaints because of the obstruction of the view. read more

We had a chance to walk by this outdoor amphitheater while visiting Hermann Park. It has permanent seating under a large canopy, with a large grassy area in the back for people who want to sit on lawn chairs or just lay on mats while listening. There was no event happening at the time we passed by, but it was clear what a nice place it would be for an outdoor concert. My nephew was our guide and told us that he had recently had a night time picnic on the 4th with his friends, and had a wonderful time. The orchestra playing patriotic music, with large fireworks thundering in the sky, made for a great night. Making a note to come here if ever in Houston for the 4th of July. read more

I love coming here to get the tickets and to wait in line sometimes I get to meet some really wonderful people. The shows are typically free and they will put on a show that at will blow your mind! I saw the Baroque performance here with a cultural Asian twist. There was lots of dancing and it was epic for the entire family. I like to sit close to the stage and not on the hill. I was going to give this theatre 3 stars but pushed it up one because WOW did the singers bring their A game in the performance. Every number was on beat, tone and musicality was soothing to the ears, and the band was amazing. I was mesmerized by the pianists' fingers lol and drummers' rhythm. The kids warmed our hearts with their choreography and enthusiasm for the arts. The adult singers had so much personality and depth in their voices with strong stage presence. Stage and lighting producers were also on time and elevated the entire shebang. Bravo to everyone involved. Why not 5 stars then? 1. This was my first time attending a TUTS (Theater Under the Stars) production and when I walked to the info desk, three ladies were there helping one gentleman while completely ignoring me. The lady on the left looked me up and down without smiling and then quickly moved her eyes back to the man without saying not much a hello. The lady on the right also didn't really ushered me to come forward. When the man moved away from the desk, I ended up greeting the lady in the center and she gave me a lukewarm welcome and directed me where to get tickets. Surprisingly, the man earlier was still by the info desk and heard me then proceeded to give me an extra ticket. He was way more helpful than the actual workers lol. I just felt turned off by the three that were supposedly ambassadors for the TUTS team. Again, thank the singers for carrying my general experience lol. 2. Since there were no breaks between the long 2 hour performance, some members of the audience were getting rowdy-getting up from their seats and moving around, generally making a lot of noise that distracts from the performers. I would suggest having at least a 15 minute cut so everyone gets a chance to stretch their legs or take a breather. All in all, loved the performance!!! Minor details slightly irked me but will be back hoping that it's not a reoccurrence. Definitely love what TUTS has done for Houston's performing arts. They were also handing out free t-shirts which was a bonus. read more

I had a wonderful time at the Jazzy Sunday concert, the venue location was changed at the last minute due to anticipated rain, but it could not have worked out any better. Although it was very well attended, it did not feel overcrowded, there was plenty of room to stretch out and maybe get to know a new neighbor. Parking was a breeze, I was dreading the walk but it actually was very simple. I love that people came prepared with picnic baskets and anything else to make them comfortable , the atmosphere was lovely, it made you want to get up and dance in the fresh evening air. Theater in the open air is an amazing experience. The performances are of a high caliber, and the setting is equally impressive. The plays are sometimes a little less well-known than the big names, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still a great deal of fun. We came here with the family and truly enjoy our time here. I love this place and need to go back more! I have memories of Miller Outdoor Theatre as a kid but going back as an adult, it was even better! We went for one of their many free movies. We parked for free and easily across the street. We brought a cooler with snacks and water bottles and comfortably sat in our camping chairs. It was the perfect evening! We watched Beauty and the Beast animated movie and wished we had been to more of their free movies! I'm on the lookout for the next event I can make. What a gem this place is for all of Houston. I went this weekend to see Don Quixote. I've never been there so I didn't know what to expect. We only brought a blanket since we ate prior. The weather was beautiful since they were smart and I did it in the evening. We got there 10 minutes before which was a huge mistake. We ended up at the top of the hill. It was a huge turnout, people everywhere. So we couldn't see anything except the top of the curtains since it's on a downward slope. If you bring chairs you can see but no one behind you can. We took an Uber there since we thought traffic would be terrible and it was with the recent grads taking pictures. We only stayed 20 minutes before we left since we couldn't see unless we stood and then people behind us couldn't see. It's a lovely show but there's a lot of anxiety about seeing the show. But at least you can walk around the park. read more

Miller Outdoor Theater has always been a great place to go for concerts. The weather was Wonderful Friday for our Motown outing. We split up and sat where we could find a spot. Three of us sat on the hill in the middle. There were so many people. More than usual, maybe because people are glad to get out after the pandemic. We weren't bothered by mosquitoes or anything. Never got hot. It was a very nice night. The singers were okay but we were missing the SANGERS that usually get us up dancing and having a great time. No dancers to get us excited. I can't hold that against Miller Theater, but who ever put the concert together. I have Pulmonary issues and think my singing is like what I saw Friday. Don't get me wrong, there were about three, maybe four people that can really sing. They were with people that would really get the gong bell if I had one. Hopefully, next year for Motown, the singers will be better. Not anything like past Motown shows. Very light three stars. Very disappointed. :-( read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid but won't age myself. This theatre is one of a kind and you can beat free!! Arrive early and you can get ticketed seats or my favorite is sitting on the lawn. You will still need to arrive early for the lawn if you want to sit closer to the stage. Pick a spot, but be mindful, folding chairs are for one side of the stage while blankets are for the other. Don't forget to pack a picnic with drinks. You can bring a adult beverages. Remember to aways clean up after yourself. Shows range in interest so check the Miller Theatre schedule. Shows are always kid friend and pet friendly if you are on the hill. The experiences are state of the art and full of culture! Broadway, ballet, heritage/cultural music and dance festivals. So grateful our beautiful city of Houston offers such fantastic FREE events for the community! Take advantage and enjoy!!! read more

If you ever want to visit Houston, find a place in walking distance to this, and schedule it so you can see a Friday or Saturday show. I go here with my family regularly for bike/scooter/stroller rides while catching the beginning of the live show. I grab a $7-$8 adult beverage at the concession stand, and get gelato for my kids. This is my second favorite thing to do in Texas (kayaking near the bay bridge in Austin). Also, hotel Zaza is the hotel in walking distance. Also, this place has the most beautiful sunset in Houston that I've seen. Pro tip: most of the shows are streamed live so if you leave home early for the kids, you can watch the rest later. read more

Check out their website for their scheduled performances. This usually happens between late Spring - Fall. Pack your own food and drinks if you want any. 2. Price - this is totally free. If you want to sit on the chairs, come a few hours early to get the tickets. 3. Ambiance - this is mainly outdoors, but there is a covered area. You park in the same parking lot for the Houston Zoo. You sit on hilltop looking down on the stage. Bring something to sit on whether it's a blanket or lawn chair. People bring their dogs too, but make sure to leash them. 4. Fun - this can be a family fun activity for all ages. A good hang out spot, and quite romantic too. 5. Cleanliness - clean public restrooms. This is a local gem. Like most native Houstonians, some of my fondest childhood memories took place at Miller Outdoor Theatre: rolling down its monstrous hill during field trips to the Zoo and nearby museums; Mom pulling us out of school to attend the Cinco de Mayo festivities - and one particular year circa '92 (I was in the 3rd grade) I ran up to Mayor Bob Lanier in a crowd of people and he kindly signed my copy of the Chronicle. Fast forward some 20+ years and the memories keep a happenin'. Catching "A Midsummer Night's Dream" during the summer's Shakespeare Festival, Houston Ballet, Houston Opera, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and cultural performances like Bollywood musicals and Taiko drummers. And they have daytime performances on a weekly basis for the kiddies. Tips: *Bring the picnic baskets filled with goodies, bevs, blankets, BUG SPRAY, citronella candles *Bring on the booze, but no glass. *If you want reserved seating up by the stage, stop by MOT early and snag your free tickets. *Grass area: Lawn chairs MUST be seated stage left; blankets stage right. *Please don't talk during the show. It's rude. ***And as everyone else mentioned, all of these performance and festivities at MOT are FREE. If you want some good karma, make a monetary contribution to the non-profit online, via check or money order. And it's tax deductible.*** My one wish for MOT is to extend its season's schedule.
