We visited on June 9th in the late afternoon. I overheard a man in our hotel (elevator) telling his friend that they were going to Broadway Brewery because 'the food is amazing'. So when I spotted this place, and we were already debating what to eat, I thought, 'why not?'--and I was not disappointed. Going inside, it was very dark and cool. It struck me as fancy, and there was a stage off to the right for live music. There weren't many customers at the time, which I was grateful for--I have bad anxiety, so crowded places are difficult. The crew seemed to be preparing for the dinner crowd, so it took a couple minutes for someone to notice and seat us. The server was dressed smartly, and he seemed reserved while polite. I don't drink, but they had an extensive (and expensive) alcohol selection for those that do. Considering it is a brewery, the prices for food weren't bad! $30.37 total for our food and drinks--much cheaper than I had expected after I was handed the pretentious-looking, single-page menu. There weren't many choices on this tiny menu, but you won't be disappointed with your food! My husband ordered the Wagyu burger with the house chips (actual chips, not fries) and I ordered the Pulled Chicken Club with mashed potatoes ($12 for each meal). I'm a super picky eater, so I asked for a couple of changes and it wasn't a problem. The serving size was better than I'd expected, and the food was, just as that elevator guy had told his buddy, AMAZING. I've had some really good food, but this was like happiness in my mouth. I've never had food that made you happy with each bite (an amazing feat, considering my severe depression), but I was absolutely giddy from the flavor! I'd definitely eat here again! Stopped in for a sampling of Beers and food pairings. We also happened to have access to a brewery tour, which was well described, and the staff laughed and bantered with us the whole time. Sampled many items but I think the Trout Hush puppies might have been the sleeper great food of the night. You have to try them. Similar to other reviewers, I am also torn about this place. I love the atmosphere, the beer is good, the food is great, and the location is right on Broadway. The service has been great each time I have been there with a couple of exceptions. UNFORTUNATELY those exceptions happen to be owners or managers who almost ruined the evening for my friends and me. The 2 examples below are just FYI. I am not the only one to complain about similar issues here. Example 1: We were seated in a candle-lit corner having a girls' night out, chatting away, enjoying the ambiance when suddenly a giant flat screen snapped on above our heads throwing light and noise at us. We all turned to see what had happened and 20 feet away stood a man (whom we had seen behind the bar and at the host stand) with a remote control, watching a sports event. NO ONE ELSE was watching. We asked our server if the tv could be turned off, and he found this man wielding the remote and asked on our behalf. The guy was no longer watching the tv but still acted completely annoyed with us and turned off the screen. (Side note to business owners: NOT EVERY BAR AND RESTAURANT NEEDS FLAT SCREEN TELEVISIONS. GET OVER IT. PLEASE!) Example 2: On a different night, the same gentleman described in example 1 was floating around the restaurant. He was obviously drunk. He asked my friend what she thought of his place and then proceeded to harass her, saying rude, somewhat-sexual things to her. Not okay. So my ultimate verdict is that I like the place but there is an owner or manager who is ruining it for everyone. I have no clue what his name is and I don't care to describe or "out" him, but I hope he gets his attitude in check very soon. read more

Perhaps it is disingenuous to review a restaurant in which I haven't eaten, but I did try to eat here once in November '09. My friend and I arrived on a weekday evening early, around 5:30 pm, and were seated almost immediately. The bar looked full but there were at least four empty tables. We were ignored completely for over 10 minutes at which point we received waters from the hostess who sat us, ironically not the server who passed us numerous times while waiting on adjacent tables. There were at least three other servers, so I don't think they happened to be understaffed. Finally, we asked for menus and those did not arrive for over 10 minutes! After waiting another 15 minutes for someone to take our order, we just gave up and left. I would like to go back and give them another chance, but given the experiences others have had there, it seems likely the service has not improved. It is painfully obvious the management is inexperienced, but I hope they are not clueless. We did like how they renovated the space to a sleek and open environment, though I enjoyed Uprise Bakery's kitchy atmosphere when their restaurant was there. As others have commented, it was fairly loud, and unfashionably so as new restaurants go. As for the rating, if I could give 5 stars for the ideal and creative effort the owners are making to incorporate local and seasonal produce, which I respect very much, I would. But then, I wouldn't be rating the restaurant. So, it's just one star for now. Maybe I'll try again after more reviews are positive.... read more

You can taste the high quality cream and butter that make up this super unhealthy, orgasmic, magical dish. Honestly, I would be game to just drink the gravy and forgo the biscuits if that were socially acceptable. One qualm, they only have brunch on Sunday, but I guess that makes the gravy experience all the more special. Broadway Brewery, the name can be deceiving. While a good place for beer, it also is a consistently great place for food and cool, local art/photography displays. I have been a few times, and the experience continues to impress. The beer is solid, with something for most tastes. I'd recommend getting a flight if you have never been to help find your favorite. I like the Cream Ale and some of their seasonal beers best. Because it is a smaller brewery, they do occasionally run out of certain beers, but the servers always have good suggestions for another choice. The menu features a nice variety, with a lot of locally-sourced ingredients. Some of the best dishes I've had were the daily features. However, they have some great options on their standard menu. For appetizers, the Porter Dip or Poutine are crowd pleasers. Their salads are typically my go-to, my favorite being the arugula, beet and goat cheese salad (yum). I've also enjoyed their Smoked Pork sandwich. The service is typically friendly and prompt, and they know their stuff. On weekends and some weeknights, they have chill live music. And they always have local art or photography on the walls, which adds to the cool vibe of the place. Overall, always a positive experience in my book! read more

Wow, what a great place for a bite and a couple beers. Definitely one of my new favorite spots in Columbia. The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting. Since you're on the lower level of a building, cell service (Verizon at least) is not the best, forcing you to put the phone down and converse with, you know, other people. I had a beet salad and four cheese pizza. Both top notch, made from scratch using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. My brother and his wife tried a buffalo burger and both of them had no complaints whatsoever. On to the brews. Everything I tried was great. From their signature APA to a less-hoppy pale ale to their fan-tas-tic hard apple cider. The cider is more dry and sour then sweet, so it's are very drinkable as a session. They also serve brunch on Saturdays and Sundays and often have live music. The next time I'm in town, I will be returning. read more

I feel it's important to weigh in because I haven't had a bad experience here in the 4-5 times I've been here. I haven't had bad service yet. I have to wait a little bit longer for food and service somtimes, but this place has been very popular and busy since it opened, so I would expect some delays. As some people have mentioned, it IS is a brand new restaurant, probably experiencing some growing pains. I am somewhat picky about beer, and I really like the beer here, especially the Nut Brown. Oh, Broadway Brewery, you were so promising when you first opened.... where did you go wrong? Let's begin with service. It's never been the high point. With the exception of a couple of stellar servers, most of the serving staff appear either uninterested or too inexperienced to know basic tenants of good customer service. But, like I said, service has never been the high point. In the beginning, the high point was always the food. That's why I kept going back. An affordable restaurant featuring high quality, locally sourced ingredients was just what Columbia needed. Unfortunately, the kitchen has been increasingly inconsistent. Makes me suspect they are having staffing problems in the back of the house, as well. The last few times I've eaten there, I leave feeling like I shouldn't have spent the money. Broadway Brewery is my favorite brunch place in Columbia. The biscuits with portabella mushroom gravy are amazing. The portions are large enough to split between two people. Brunch is only served on Sundays though, so it can get a little crowded. Get there early or expect a wait. If you get there after 1pm on Sunday, there is live bluegrass music. I put 4 stars instead of 5 because of my non-brunch experiences. One of the best things about Broadway Brewery is they try to cook with local in-season ingredients. Unfortunately, that also means their menu changes often and frequently a dish I loved last time I went was no longer on the menu next time. I am always able to find something good though. Their beer is fine, but not the best microbrew in town. BB can also be a little pricey. It's worth it for the quality of food they serve, but it's not a place you could grab lunch everyday. read more

Last night I ate at Broadway Brewery, and I was reminded just how much service can affect your experience. I dined with a group of 8, and we were there around 7:00 on a Friday. People seemed quite pleased with their food, and I know that I was- I had the veggie sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Now, lest you think that a veggie sandwich would be boring and bland, I will tell you that this sandwich was super flavorful. The sandwich had hummus and goat cheese in addition to some roasted vegetables that were still crisp enough to have some crunch. I would definitely order this sandwich again because it was quite filling but not heavy. For my side, I chose the Mac and cheese, and, while I also tried the Asian stir fry, I would definitely pick the Mac and cheese again. The Broadway Brewery has many house beers, but the prices for the house beers are not listed on the drink menu. Several of my friends drank cider instead of a house beer, and their drinks were more expensive than a house beer. In terms of service, I was really disappointed. While our server was initially so attentive that it felt like we were being peer pressured to order more and more drinks, after we got our food, she was not seen until we flagged her down to ask for the bill. We also asked her to walk us through some of the items on the menu (because, to the restaurant's credit, the dishes have a lot of complex ingredients), and she didn't really provide any guidance on the dishes. It kind of blew my mind that a restaurant that prides itself on cultivation of local ingredients and resources didn't train its servers to highlight those points. Additionally, there really was no attempt at any interaction besides transactional ones, which is subtle but goes a long way. Overall, I didn't have a great enough experience that I am beating down the doors to go back to Broadway Brewery, but I wouldn't turn it down. The food was really good. Also, the restaurant takes reservations on weekends! That's a good tip to keep handy. read more

Generally, when it comes to Columbia I have seen it all. A few tried and true places still impress me--but when I stumble on another place that really stands out. Well, color me shocked. I went to the "B Brew" for my Bachelorette Party and my localvore dinner really hit the spot. We had roasted potato sticks (since they don't own and won't purchase a deep-fryer, awesome!) and a slew of organic burgers made from Missouri grass-fed beef (and only $8!!) and lamb, as well as American organic Kobe. They were all served on glorious old-world style kaisers with local veggies. We toasted with a (again) local pear cider that was truly delightful, even as a non-cider drinker. I noticed they specialized in high-gravity local beers, but didn't partake myself. Go. Go, go, go. Now. You can scout out their specials later. read more

Not a fan. Went here on a Sunday morning with two friends to have brunch. The selection wasn't great and we all got an angry vibe from a manager who was roaming the dining area. We all had the pecan pancakes and they were just average - nothing special and not particularly good. Our pancakes arrived without butter, so we requested it. The server seemed genuinely surprised by the request. She brought us frozen butter that was hard as a rock. I also had a side order of bacon that was flabby and greasy. One of my companions had a side of sausage and said it was good. The ambiance is lacking. The place is in a basement location with no natural lighting and inadequate artificial lighting. It's pretty dark and I always worry that places are dark to hide dirt. We were there at 10 a.m. and the bar was packed. This is probably a good hangover breakfast place, but I was sober and, therefore, underwhelmed. read more

Having heard great reviews from various sources for BB, I knew that my husband and I would have to go there. We both enjoy trying microbrewed, new beers and are always looking for good places to eat. We were disappointed in the beers... not quite up to par yet with Flatbranch but definitely better than Prison Brews in Jeff City. Alot of the darker beers tasted similar and were hard to distinguish from them. And I did not appreciate that you had to look at the chalk board above the bar to see what their "own" beer offerings were (waitress did not seem interested in discussing/telling us about them either) esp since the brand name beers were on a drink menu... It was kinda dark in there and the angle from where we were sitting was not ideal for it... Would it really be that difficult to get mini table chalkboards or centerpieces that hold mini menus? The food on the other hand was a different story. It was great. There focus here is on locally grown/raised and seasonal offerings (tied into what is available). Everyone at my table tried my lamb burger and wished they had ordered it themselves. My dad got a pizza, definitely good to get if you want to save a bit of money and split your meal. My step-mom got the polenta plate, not quite what she expected (never had polenta) and it was good... an excellent option for vegitarians. I forget what the husband got (I think the bison burger... just tasted like a burger), but the maple glazed carrots that he got on the side were wonderful... So my plan of action for next time is to get the Lamb Burger and the Carrots. Hopefully, with subsequent visits the beers will improve... and the star rating will improve... afterall, they are a brewery... the beer is important! read more

what a great place. We have been here a few times while in town from St.Louis for Tiger Football. First of all, we love to sit at the bar. The bartenders are super friendly and are awesome about explaining the different whiskeys they have to offer and letting us try them out as well. The beers ( not a beer fan, but I do taste my husbands when I am there) are really good. My favorite Salad is the Arugula salad. It is awesome!! Sheperds pie is amazing and might be the best I have tried. Can't wait for next football season to get back to Columbia and get to Broadway Brewery. read more

I didn't realize that I never reviewed BB again... I've been a yelp slacker lately. So I look up places on my phone, but not many reviews lately... Anyway, I have visited BB (as I refer to it in txt msgs) quite often over the last semester. It's become my place of choice for dinner and beer. The IPA is good when its on tap, as are the double and the rye. The APA is pretty solid too. The crowd is sporadic, which is more a problem for the owner than me, but sometimes it may take a min or two for a table. As far as food goes, the pizzas are all good, although they've recently changed, the polenta plate is tasty but spicy, and the specials are often fantastic. Delicious, and I consider myself to be somewhat of a lamb connisseur, being Armenian and such. The beers were okay. Not bad, but typical craft beer. The service was excellent. Service: Upon arriving I wasn't greeted by anyone, although I did see employees roaming about. I sat myself, which is fine. But again no one came over to my table. I had to go to the bar and ask for a menu. The bartender seemed aggravated that I made this inquiry. Turns out she was my waitress also since it was an early dinner. Her attitude didn't change with my menu questions. When I requested a modification to the sides she said the kitchen would get mad...so that modification didn't happen. NOT how one should approach such situations. The girl who delivered my food was friendly, so I think it was just one bad impression with the bartender. 2 thumbs down for not smiling ever and making me feel like a burden. Beer: I had an American Pale Ale and an ESB. The APA was OK. I wouldn't order it again. The ESB was actually a really good beer, but it definitely wasn't an ESB, which was disappointing. I would order many more though, know that I am not getting an ESB. Food: The side of garlic brocolli was great and the lamb burger was solid. Not the best, but a 6/7 out of 10. The fact that all the meat is local and grass fed makes this place awesome. BOTTOM LINE: I'd come back again for the food and the beer. My favorite place so far in Columbia. Their own beer is quite good especially considering how little time they have been brewing. But if you're not a fan of their beer, they have a fantastic beer list dominated by craft brews. And the prices are very reasonable. To be honest I haven't given the wine list more than a glance but it seems reasonable. They also have a full bar which makes it an ideal place for a group since some (crazy) people don't drink beer or wine. The food still needs a little work. The ingredients are fresh and I appreciate that they go to such an effort to incorporate local foods however substitutions without notification are the norm. And more than a few menu items could do with more seasoning. When you're not relying on frying, the ingredients need more spice to keep the dishes from being bland. The pulled pork sandwich is a reliable choice. The service is find in my opinion. Is it five star? No. But every server has been friendly and quick to ask if they don't know the answer. As the place develops and the staff becomes more seasoned, I am sure the service will improve. Personally, I love the location. It's easy to direct people too and there is plenty of free parking at least by my standards. My biggest complaint is that the pricing is inconsistent. I have been charged a different price than what is on the menu more than once. And their own draft beers seem to migrate between $3.50 and $4.50 a pint. Also, an out of town guest had their credit card run through for three different bar tabs (quickly corrected with a phone call). However we frequent the place and have not had a problem with credit card abuse so that seems to have been an isolated incidence and an honest mistake. read more

Wow. This place really impressed me. It's in such a cool spot and building. It's in the basement of this weird little half outdoor/indoor shopping center building thing. Downtown Columbia is super cool as it is, and this is no exception. It's a rather large area with lots of seating and different style tables. Bar is a great set up, it fits a lot of people. I will throw in an extra comment about their bathrooms being super nice also. I glanced quickly at the beer menu without reading it too in depth. I ordered a flight and they assumed I meant all of them. Before I knew I had 12 different beers in front of me. Perfect! I slowly started working my way through them. I couldn't help but notice how consistently good they were. I didn't have a single beer I wouldn't drink again, even the styles I'm not a fan of. They had some really unique choices and great names for the brews as well. I'd highly recommend all the different IPAs they have. AND they are planning on continuing a series of single hop strain IPAs! After working my way through some of the technically 4 whole beers of varying, mostly on the high end, alcohol content, I decided to order some food. I went out of my comfort zone and ordered the wild mushroom sandwich. Outstanding! I never would have thought an entire, filling, delicious sandwich could be made with just a few ingredients. Amazing flavor. This is by far one of the best brewpub experiences I have had beer and foodwise, If you're trying to decide between some of the different places in town to go, please, give this a shot. read more

We called early in the day to reserve a table and staff for 30 people at 7:45 and were told we would be fine, they just had a large party coming in later at 10:30. Knowing this, they only gave us one waitress and made us order in shifts so it was easier on the kitchen, even though the restaurant wasn't even half full, and it still took forever! By the time everyone had finally received all their food, we were glared at everytime staff and management walked by, which I can only assume because it was close to 10pm at that point and they had a 100+ people coming in 30 minutes. They were literally cleaning the table while the rest of us were still eating. Maybe if they had provided more than one waitress things could have gone quicker. ‍The food was mediocre at best and the drink menu was minimal unless you wanted their beer. read more

The beers are always seem to change or a regular basis and are quite drinkable. The menu seems to change quite often too, not necessarily with the season, but regularity which gives you many choices in quite a tight menu. This means that if you are a repeat customer your favourite might just not be there next time. The environment is relaxed and full of young professionals. It's location tucked away in the basement also gives cm great access to the pedestrian alleyway behind and parking in the multi-storey garage if the streets are full.
