This is my favorite burger place in Columbia. The food, drink, and service is consistently great.

We love this spot for a great beer and a burger. They also have good pizza too. We really enjoy the atmosphere and how local it is. My only negative is the restrooms could be a bit cleaner sometimes. read more

Third or Fourth time we have gone to 1839 and not as good as previous visits. Our sever (Eva) was very nice but did not seem to have much experience as a server. She brought out our appetizers and entrees at the same time even though we specifically asked for the nachos to come out first. Our second round of drinks sat up at the bar for almost 15 minutes while she bussed tables. The Nachos were definitely not as good as previous visits with an excessive amount of cheese which made the chips soggy. The burgers were very good as always and we love being able to choose our toppings. We will go back, avoid the nachos and hope the service level improves. read more

This place is great. Smaller menu, but the stuff on the menu is AMAZING! They give you a piece of paper to build your own burger or chicken Sandip if you want, which is great. The burger was most certainly fresh (not frozen). One of the best burgers I've ever had in the Columbia area. The chili cheese fries are good, I wish the chili had a bit more flavor but the queso (cheese) sauce they poor on it is to die for. Eat here! You won't be disappointed. This is a very nice "hole in the wall" type joint complete with a few booths, a few tables, a decent bar, and a back area with a pool table and some bar games. Our large group (10) came in after a long day of work around 9:30PM on a Saturday night and were able to get a block of tables together. I wasn't a fan of whatever hoppy beer was in the pitchers on the table, so I went to the bar and asked for "The biggest Guinness they'd give me". This was met with a deadpan "Are you serious?", to which I replied "But of course!". Next thing I know, I'm being handed a 42 ounce giant glass mug of heavenly Guinness. This alone was worthy of a 5-star review. But it only got better! They even had a Woodford Reserve Double Oaked...which I also had. As great as the beverages were, the food was astonishingly better. Most of the group opted for double and triple burgers with varying degrees of accouterments. These were amazing burgers, really top notch. The wings left a little to be desired, but were still pretty good. If I were going back, I'd definitely want to try the pizza as it looked great too. Service was fast and friendly. All around a great experience. Note: There's ample parking outside, but seating is a little limited, so call ahead if you're bringing a group. Prices were extremely affordable. Probably the best hamburger I have had! I would give five stars however the place could use a good cleaning and maybe turn the music down just a bit during the early evening hours? I went to 1839 for dinner on a weeknight. First thing I noticed was the crowd, it is not the college crew you get in many places downtown. It also was not as crowded as downtown restaurants/bars. They have a decent menu, and I was in the mood for a burger. One of the cool things about 1839 Taphouse is the sheet they give you to customize your burger or chicken sandwich. I ordered mine with cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, bacon and ketchup. Most of the toppings are included in the price, with a few costing extra. I ordered a single burger, which was $3.99 (without a side). Not too bad price-wise. It tasted good, but the burger patties are thin so the bread overwhelmed the meat a little. I would recommend getting at least a double if you order a burger. For a side, I split some jalapeno homemade chips, which were good and has just the right amount of kick. These cost $2.99, so total my meal was about $7. Very decent pricing for dinner. The beer selection was interesting and different than what you will see most places. The waitress was knowledgable about their beer selection and offered some good recommendations. My only complaint is that, while the service for most of the meal was great, our waitress disappeared later in the evening. We had to wait more than 20 minutes after we were done eating to get the check, and long after that to pay and leave. I understand things happen, so this won't keep me from visiting in the future. read more

Several points to make about this pub. 1. The food is great. It's bar food, so don't expect high class dining. But the Portions are great, and what I got to eat was fresh and delicious. The price was very reasonable as well. My drink was well made. The cooks/bartender are the ones who saved this review. 2The atmosphere was alright. It was much smaller than what I expected, but still roomy. Music was a bit loud, but I didn't mind. Games were playing on tv. 3. My service was absolutely TERRIBLE. I went on a Tuesday, so it was not packed. I saw several empty tables when I first arrived. I was asked what I wanted to drink and the server left for about 10 minutes. We had to ask for a menu, waited another 5 minutes for that. I sincerely felt like the server was annoyed with my simple requests. Food was brought out in a timely manner (I give credit to a great cook staff). My food was wrong, though, not what I ordered. I accepted it anyway and just gave it to some friends. We waited over an hour for our check, and had to physically flag down our server because she was talking to the over servers at the other end of the room. We were not checked on at all after we got our food. This server did not take pride in her work. I usually leave large tips, but this server was the first in a while that did not deserve one (I still tipped though). Overall I had a decent time, and probably will return because I enjoyed the food I ordered. Will have to try the nachos. I sincerely hope I do not get the same server, though. read more

I wouldn't go here if you expect any form of friendly service. I am 24 years old and from Arkansas. They refused to serve me because they believed my ID was fake even after I showed them my health insurance card with my birthday and my pilot license. They were rude throughout the entire process. Decent place to grab a beer and maybe some nachos. I don't have any real complaints, but also don't have anything that great to say about it. The beer specials are decent and the food is your typical burger/wings etc menu. The only thing that really stands out is the different flavored chips and the "flip night" special where you can potentially get a few drinks free. If they did a quick remodel and cleaned up the place a bit; maybe add a few more unique takes on food, this place would get a little more of my attention. My friends and I are always on the lookout for good places in Columbia that aren't crazy packed on a football Saturday. We gave 1839 Taphouse a try for the first time recently, but it definitely will not be the last. The homemade chips made an awesome appetizer that we nibbled on throughout the meal. I love the 'build your own' burgers and nachos. The group I was with had both of those, and said they were great. I had the philly cheese with steak (and jalapenos! extra points for jalapenos!), which was extremely good. I'm not a very adventurous beer drinker, but they had a great selection, and the waitress was helpful in guiding one of my fellow diners to something interesting. If you can tear yourself away from Sub Shop next door, 1839 Taphouse is worth a trip. read more

We will NEVER visit again. - worth the read, and frankly unbelievable. Friends and I went in for drinks. We sat for 15 minutes until we had to ask for assistance. It was clear the waitress (Raven) was having a bad night and took offense to us asking. She treated our table like an inconvenience the remainder of the night. Being rude is a understatement to our entire table. Even when we were leaving she was unable to get our bill right until another waitress came to help. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS SO MUCH WORSE! Two weeks later I receive a harassing message on Facebook from a different waitress (Bianca) using curse words, making accusations, and calling us cheap. (my friends and I were regulars so they know us) I let the owner know of this rouge waitress and her actions. He called me back and said that she admitted to sending the harassing messages. I first thought to myself, ok great he will handle it and we can move on. WRONG - His next question was to see if she put it out there for the public to see, or if it was in a private message. As soon as I said it was a private message and not in public, the owner changed his entire stance on the situation. He stated he spoke with the waitress again and he didn't know what to think, but they stated they didn't want to serve us anymore so we should just go our separate ways from Tap House. The bad reviews are legit here people, beware. Even the staff we became friends with would jokingly mention the bad reviews at times. The main reason we went is due to it being down the street. Ill be sure to just go to Murrys across the street! Guaranteed the owner and staff will not treat their customers this way. read more

Right down Providence from Mizzou. Great place to be pre/post games. I'm a big fan of the heated patio. I'm usually out there watching the TV's, or at the bar. They have TV's everywhere, and just put up a new massive one inside. You should go, drink a craft beer and get a cheese burger, it's one of the best burgers in town. read more

The best part about this place is the crowd: hipsters, lawyers, the elderly, handsome business men like myself- all sitting in the same bar getting along. I used to love the wings but lately instead of chicken wings I've been served shriveled up pieces of chicken stuck to a charred bone. It seems the quality of meat went down and the duration of time in the fryer about doubled. I've mentioned this twice to them as the wings used to be so good until a few weeks ago. Don't understand the hype about this place! The peach fuzz beer that I got did not taste "fruity" as stated and I had some of my boyfriend's blue moon and it literally tasted the same. Our waitress messed up on our groups' orders multiple of times. For a huge group of 10-15 you know you won't be able to remember our orders off the top of your head -- that's what a notepad is for. I like this place pretty well. They have a wide selection of beers on tap. The beers on tap rotate in and out, though, so your favorite might not be there next time you go in.
