This review specifically pertains to a hike my chum and I took last weekend that literally went from the bottom of Manhattan to the top, almost exclusively using Broadway. We spent a solid amount of time pondering which direction to go in (most people seem to go north to south), but decided to walk up the island so that we didn't have to deal with the hordes of tourists toward the end of the journey on tired hindpaws. It was the right decision. We started in Battery Park around 7:50am. I'd recommend a similar early start time for anyone else. The neighborhoods that you typically associate with crowds - Chinatown, Times Square, etc. - were comparatively empty that early in the day, and with the July heat, it wasn't as oppressive as you'd assume, at least not initially. We both work in the Financial District a few blocks from Battery Park, so we're used to seeing literal lines of tourists by the Charging Bull statute and roaming around the scuzzy shops right at the bottom of Broadway. None of that was an issue this time. We took our obligatory Bull rump pictures and carried on. It didn't take long at all to get up to Union Square, which had its bustling farmers market going on when we showed up. That was probably the first time we had to contend with a significant number of people, but it was still nothing compared to what it's like later in the day. This is also where, if you're not familiar with Broadway, you need to pay attention to where you're going. Broadway continues on the NW corner of Union Square, but starts crossing over a lot of notable streets for the next 40 blocks or so. It's not THAT hard to locate - you're in the middle of civilization, after all - but a general rule of thumb is if you're trying to decide which one is Broadway, it's the one that's not going straight. We were also pleasantly surprised to find Times Square not as awful as usual. For some reason the knock-off animal characters were exclusively Elmos and Minnie Mouses on this particular morning, along with one Predator. This was also the only area where we had to deal with a spotty rain shower, which thankfully was timed for a few blocks right after we got out of the worst of that neighborhood so it felt like we were literally being cleansed from a dirty tourist trap. The tenor of the hike becomes very different when you get past Columbus Circle. It's quintessential Upper West Side and just feels very ordered/civilized compared to the chaos you've being dealing with since the beginning. The streets are wider and even with it now being mid or late morning, it didn't feel like there were more people around, though obviously part of that is you're not in nearly as touristy of an area. Collectively both of have lived in NYC for at least a decade, and yet neither of us had ever been on foot past roughly 125th Street. There really wasn't a section up in this area that actively concerned anyone or where we felt like we were in danger, but it's definitely a little worn-down. You can tell a lot of the people you're passing by don't go much below 125th Street either. Beyond the GW Bridge and a quick detour over to the Morris-Jumel Mansion (oldest house in Manhattan), there aren't a ton of interesting optics the rest of the way unless you count the actual landscape - it becomes noticeably hillier as you progress, though most of the inclines are actually off to the sides of the street and not something you need to necessarily navigate up firsthand. We stopped a handful of times for food/drinks so it's a little tough to calculate how long this officially took, but I'd guess around six hours or so (we took nine hours or so with the stops). If you're like us and much more familiar with the bottom half of the island, you're going to be pleased at how quickly you get up to unfamiliar territory. When we took a look at the map beforehand in planning our route, we were both pretty surprised to realize that the halfway point is in the West 90s somewhere - that should give you a rough idea of how lengthy that narrow, top section is. If you're looking for recommendations on places to stop along the way, my personal favorite spot was Nobody Told Me on the UWS, and the establishment I would avoid like the plague next time around is the insultingly overpriced, mediocre Mexican bar El Porton in the W 120s. Obviously 15-mile urban hikes aren't for everyone - and that goes double for days like this when it felt like it was in the 90s and threatened to shower the entire time - but this a pretty solid bucket list item in my opinion. read more

I loved Broadway. We didn't see any shows, but we had the opportunity. I was surprised how few people talk about the "Show" that goes on outside in the streets. There's everything there - buskers, street performers, scammers, hucksters, costumed people, actors, and just about anything you can think of. In many ways, it reminded me of Bourbon Street in New Orleans, except on steroids, and with fewer drunks. You can just stand there, and watch almost anything come by, and almost anything happen, but stay away if you don't like crowds. It was almost as crowded when we were there on a Saturday as Times Square gets on New Year's Eve! It was incredible, and a lot more than I was expecting. I highly recommend checking this out when you are in town. read more

Broadway this is the heart of NYC bright lights and big city. If you ever heard that saying before ..believe me Broadway has something to do with it .The good old days are gone ..the old Broadway is just a memory. Remember the days back in the early 80s the twenty five cent peep shows three card monte .kids break dancing on card board boxes for money with rap music blasting from there boom box .and kids also break dancing on the trains.subway cars filled with graffiti..And the subway trains was seventy five cents !!.you would use tokens back in those days .and a slice of pizza was only one dollar. The prostitutes walking up and down streets. So many porn shops you couldn't even count them .people smoking marijuana in broad daylight like it was legal. And you still had your Broadway shows that have stood the test of time .this aspect of Broadway has never faded away. The shows are still here till this day.when every thing else that had to do with Broadway has ether faded away. Or was forced out when Rudy Giuliani became mayor in 1994 and forced almost all of.. ..The illegal activities out of times square and broad way .That is when Broadway became more family friendly .with Disney characters from Mickey mouse-mini mouse Elmo you name it all apart of the new New York and the new Broadway .a lot has changed a we have come a long way. The streets are more safer..you have more police officers on the street out there. And tourists and families can enjoy the restaurant and the shows and all the other things that broad way has to offer .this place to me is still great and will only get better for generations to come. read more

When I first visited "Broadway," I thought of it more as a street. When I realized there are a bunch of Broadway shows around Times Square, I was in awe. I have seen Hamilton twice, Harry Potter parts one and two, and The Book of Mormon. I have also seen Hangmen (off-Broadway but it will be coming to Broadway soon). All of the shows have been phenomenal and highly recommended (Book of Mormon was hilarious but if you don't like South Park, I'd suggest something else). The actors and singers are jaw dropping and there is true talent on and off the stage. From behind the curtain to the people up front and center, there is so much work that goes into each play. If you're visiting NYC, definitely go see a Broadway show! read more

I first showed up to the United States age 16, fresh off a plane from England, and I headed straight for the bright lights of Times Square (after taking a cab from JFK to Port Authority, sharing with 3 strangers). But enough about me. Let's talk about Bogart. Back in the 50s, they called girls broads, and Bogey wouldn't sleep with a broad unless she was under 200lb but over 150 (he liked a little curve, not to much, but maybe just enough). So his first question was always "What does that Broad Weigh?" And that, ladies and ladies, is how this street got its name. True. Story. Broadway is still a very magical and special place - despite the best efforts of Disney and the police and evil Giuliani. And I remember first hand (I'm old) when it used to be a hotbed of excitement and illegal activity. Wandering this street as a teenager was the greatest thrill of my life. The sex shops, the food stands, the movie theatres, the shows, and of course, standing for hours on end inside Tower Records (RIP) listening to every track on every new album on their 100s of listening stations for the entire Billboard Top 200 albums. That was when OK Computer had only just come out. And indeed, when I had only just come out. I remember hearing the soaring strains of Lucky and especially The Tourist, and they provided the soundtrack to that summer in America for me. There would be many more summers in America, and hopefully more to come. Broadway will forever be very very special to me. Even though they f***ing ruined it. Now it's a hotbed of commercialism and capitalism and Disney. They sucked a lot of the life out of this place. It's still a great destination for tourists - as squeaky clean and saccharin as it has become. Lots of street performers instead of drug dealers. Lots of brand-name stores instead of local sellers. Lots of chain restaurants instead of sex shops. Welcome to the new New York. Oh and of course there are plays! However the Carnegie Deli is no more. And that sucks. And you can't drive straight down Broadway anymore like the old days. Some things should never be changed. But they still are. Five stars for what Broadway used to be. When my girlfriend and I first met, we were getting to know each other and one of the questions I asked was, "what is your dream vacation?" She told me her dream vacation was to go to New York and watch a Broadway show. I told her, even though we weren't even a couple yet, that I was going to make it happen. A year and nine months later, I made it happen. During our trip, we walked down Broadway and saw all the theatres. We were originally going to see Hamilton and Lion King but due to COVID they were cancelled (we found future shows to go see them in other cities) but we were lucky to get tickets to see my gf's other favorite show Wicked! Of course there has to be a good show out of the thousands open currently. There's lots of other things if you aren't seeing a show. Broadway itself is a street running through many neighborhoods. Ahhh, Broadway! The Great White Way. A place were fantasy becomes reality, and where stars are born. It is a place where aspiring actors and actresses long to be, and where hopeful playwrights spend a lifetime yearning to see their words spoken aloud on a stage. There is a magic here, and only those who can truly appreciate a live performance of the spoken arts can feel it. Can sense it. Can touch it. Can become a part of it. Over the years I have attended many shows on Broadway. From musicals to comedy to drama, from classics to modern interpretations, from the long running to the revivals. There is something for everyone here to even the pickiest theater aficionado. There is nothing like taking your seat and seeing the lights go down and the curtains opening to begin a show. Where else can you see legends like Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters, Elaine Stritch, Angela Landsbury, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, John Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz, Harvey Fierstein, and so many others to list here hone their craft almost nightly in front of a live audience? Yes, in this modern age going to a show is pricey, but discounts and bargains can be found if one is flexible with their schedule and does a little digging on-line or at the TKTS booths. Even a guy like me that prefers beer to champagne, and burgers over caviar appreciates a little culture in my life on occasion. Living in the greatest city affords me that opportunity, and it is a pity to not take advantage of it. Broadway is still a shining beacon that lives on in NYC. Broadway? As in they say "the Neon Lights are Bright on Broadway"? I think this listing means Times Square. I lived off Broadway (the Street) on the Upper West Side. Dance Studios, Music Venues and many other NYC lifestyle businesses abound up there too. Do they have Neon? Some do and some don't. Next there's Broadway Lower East Side. My musician family members rented lofts on Broadway. There are Artists of every kind. Very different feel on Broadway Lower East Side. Plus, I love Broadway around Columbia University. I love walking all the way up Broadway in warm weather. It's a hike. So many classic sites and historical locations can be seen along the way. Then you have Midtown Broadway. Food, Food, and More Food and that includes Times Square in my opinion. Theaters and Fun places for tourists and residents alike. I could go on, but you get the point. If you navigate Broadway you'll see for yourself. The feel is different, the architecture is different, residential environment, and community/cultural atmosphere is also different. BUT, while different, it is all the same. When you're here it's a NYC feeling that can't be duplicated elsewhere. We're one of a kind! read more

I have been to more theatres and shows on and off Broadway than I can count! Some rainy day, I need to dig out my Playbills! Some theatre's were the Shubert, the Gershwin, the Majestic Theatre, the Minscoff Theatre, the Winter Garden Theatre, the New Amsterdam Theatre and of course STOMP at the Orpheum Theatre ( which was perfectly fitting for the show! ) Plus Pommes Frittes is directly across the street! ) Fabulous Belgium fries with unreal dipping sauces. Personally an avid fan of live performances, my initial experience with Broadway started in Chicago. Though not as big as the Broadway industry in New York, Chicago's Broadway is mainly located in the downtown with some theaters in suburbs and uptown. I love the Broadway scene in New York City.Always love going out and seeing some of the best theme based Broadway shows.I have seen some of the best theatrical performances in few of the best theaters in the city. Even after so many years watching Broadway shows, I still get excited to see the opening night of a new show.There are more than 40 professional theaters in the theater district. Apart from enjoying some nice performances, one is also able to experience some of the oldest theaters in the entire world. NYC's Broadway represents the highest level of commercial theater. I mean what can I say really, it's Broadway. The bright lights make you feel like you're walking through an outlet mall during the day. The big city with people running everywhere... and of course Broadway. The musical productions on the Broadway theatre are nothing less than stunning. I saw Hamilton and it was incredible. The theatre was incredibly clean. The only part that STRESSED me out were some of the staff and how rude they were. They acted like I was stupid, I'm not stupid (Hamilton reference ;)) but in all seriousness I wasn't going to let some of the staff take away from this place and it's rating. Yay Broadway! The street is quite long and it leads to...well, Broadway shows. Pretty average street if you ask me; always crowded with people! It goes diagonal through a lot of the streets, so it's probably a good road to take if you need to get somewhere faster! For the shows, I've seen two of them: Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. Welcome to Broadway or what they commonly call it "the Great White Way." Broadway is the launching ground for new plays, musicals, comedy, you name it. I'm am noting the fact that only a couple of theaters are on Broadway itself. Most of them are crunched together on the parallel streets running from 41st up to 51st. Let's also not forget there is a Broadway theater up at Lincoln center called the Vivian Beaumont. So if you walk down a street you may find up to 3 theaters on each side depending on what you are going to see. What constitutes a Broadway theater is the number of seats the theater has. I believe it is about a minimum of 500 but I could be off with those numbers. There's plenty of off Broadway theaters as well. The best thing I like about seeing a production is being able to catch celebrities in roles. Sure it may not be the original cast but hey, it's still the same show. Times Square offers a half price ticket booth for same day productions of certain shows but if you are after a headliner such as Hello Dolly or Hamilton which were on my last visit, then you need to purchase those tickets far in advance and plan your trip around them. Broadway theaters does have its downsides however. Many of the theaters are old and run down and you need to use stairs to go to the basement to use the rest rooms. Another thing is that many of the shows let out at the same time so you're stuck with thousands of people and it is easy to lose the person(s) you're with. After a performance some people wait outside the back of the theater in the hopes of sighting the star of someone they liked in the show. For instance, when we left the Shubert theater after Hello Dolly, my daughter and I were across the street at Juniors and there was a mob of people waiting for Bette Midler to get into this limousine parked right in the middle of Shubert Alley. Broadway also is a very long street that runs from Upper Manhattan down to lower Manhattan. It is not as wide as you see on TV. I've walked parts of the route they use on the Macy's parade and believe it is not as wide as it seems in certain parts. Seeing that it is now spring new shows are opening quickly so they can be contenders in this year's Tony awards. Be prepared to spend a lot of money because in addition to your ticket they do bag checks and you are not allowed to carry beverages into the theater. Of course the reason is so you can buy them in there at exhorbant prices. But that's the fun of it all. My only suggestion would be is that if you want to avoid the crowds of Times Square before or after a performance then head over to 8th Ave and walk down to the street where your theater is located. One last thing, most theaters will not admit you until 30 minutes prior to the performance but the line starts its queue at least an hour beforehand. If you are a theater lover as I am you will truly enjoy a live stage production. Who knows what celebrities you'll see! read more

We did the whole 'tourist' thing and went to "Phantom of the Opera" which was also absolutely amazing. I am not sure what this listing is for, the avenue? Or is it referring to the theatre industry/district in NYC? Meanwhile the address to this business profile does not give me a clue to what this listing is for. The address is neither on Broadway, the avenue, nor an address of a theatre. So I'll write about both the avenue and the industry/district... Most of Manhattan is on a grid system. Broadway is the avenue I used to walk on to go from downtown to midtown because it moves from the east side to the west side across other avenues. Broadway is the only avenue that travels north on a slant. I remember when I first found out Broadway stretches past the Bronx. I was actually in shock how far it goes. It actually continues into Westchester! That is too far for me to walk!! Broadway was closed down around Herald Square to Times Square area several years ago to automobile traffic to make room for a pedestrian plaza. Which leads to the second part of my review of Broadway, the industry: The portion of Broadway in Midtown Manhattan including the Theater District, between 42nd and 53rd Streets, and Times Square is where the heart of the theatre industry is located, sometimes to referred to as "The Great White Way" which is actually referring to the bright lights in the area. A Broadway show refers to the type of theatre the show is playing in. A Broadway theatre houses 500+ seats while a Off-Broadway show is less then 500 seats. And usually a Broadway show is in playing around the Theatre District which actually even includes Lincoln Center even though it a bit more north than the main area of the Theatre District. The problem with Broadway shows is how expensive the tickets are which unfortunately makes Broadway shows not accessible to most people in NYC. This area of Times Square around Broadway was not a place I wanted to visit back when in the 70's, 80's and even part of the 90's. It was mega seedy area with the shadiest characters like drug dealers, hookers, muggers and it was full of go-go clubs, sex shops/peep shows, 3-card monte street hustlers, and adult theaters. There were a few regular movie theatres in that area during this time but no one wanted to go to this area. Even the electronic stores in the Times Square area were notorious for swindling shoppers. This area in midtown was certainly a place to avoid during the 70's up to the mid 90's. Starting slowly with Mayor Koch the area started to change. During the time Mayor Giuliani was in office, porn/sex shops, peep shows, adult movie houses started to close. I noticed them closing one at a time. I was working in the area in the 90's. Also police presence was increasing in the area. The homelessness in the area was starting to move away too. It was changing pretty rapidly too. It felt safer and safer as time went on. Now when you look at Times Square/ Broadway area you can barely tell this area once used to be mega sleazy and it was the red light district of Manhattan! read more

I am taking this "Broadway" to mean the stretch of theatres in the Theatre District. My first Broadway experience was when I was a teenager in HS, which was pretty fine as far as I can recall. More recently, I've been back to Broadway as someone who can actually drink, and I think that makes a huge difference. While yes, family fun and entertainment is easily found here, I had considerably more fun as an adult. First of all, the themed cocktails that are available at most shows are an easy sell for me. Though of course they're expensive, I would say that every themed cocktail I tasted while I was there had a generous amount of alcohol in it. (I tasted, maybe 4 or 5.) Which can't be said about the bars I visited, despite the prices be about the same as the prices of the themed cocktails. I love seeing musicals here, in all their magical, gaudy, hilarious glory. There's really nothing like it, because... It's Broadway. I'm sure when I visit London next year and I'm faced with a similar theatre district, it'll be a magical and wonderful experience. But it won't be the Broadway experience. Because it's just kind of unique. And so yes, you will see tourists everywhere, but you'll also see locals. Personally, I would say that hype seems to be to be a bit exaggerated in my opinion, but it's still fun to support "local" theatre and the talent on Broadway is fantastic. It's an institution, and I grew up loving theatre so visiting Broadway is sort of going full circle for me. read more

I saw Jersey Boys which was quite enjoyable. But my impressions of the Broadway area are a different story. My expectations based on the media: a street with old-world, opulent, grand theatre entrances with bright lights full of charm and character. Reality: A congregation of back street alleyways with rubbish on the streets, steam coming out of drains, theatres spread far apart with inconspicuous entrances which I would not have found but for the crowds lining up outside when a show was about to start. In fact, I had walked in that area a number of times not knowing it was Broadway until my travelling partner pointed it out to me. Really disappointing. Probably one of the starkest contrasts between my expecations and reality in my travels. read more

But as long as student-rush tickets and family hookups exist; I'll always return to you Broadway...because no one else provides escapist entertainment in its purest form like the Great White Way, cause I'm a Broadway Baby. When you're first show is at the age of 4, when you've had Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, Nathan Lane and Debbie Allen respectively baby-sit you backstage, when you've seen 25+ shows at the age of 25, when you leave college for a year to intern on a Broadway musical...you tend to fall into this category. So a big shout out to Spring Awakening(x4), Les Liasions Dangerouses, Is He Dead?, Cats, Chicago(x7 through family), Throughouly Modern Millie(x a million through former job), Jelly's Last Jam, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Smokey Joes' Cafe, Will Roger's Follies, Sweet Charity, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Fosse, the Color Purple, Ragtime, Macbeth (x2), Hairspray, the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Les Misarable, the Scarlet Pimpernel, RENT...and whatever else I've managed to view over the last 20+ years of living. read more

Broadway is one of those quintessentially New York City things that one must experience upon visiting. The shows are generally of the highest quality and production value, and many shows that debut here go on to tour around the country or world. In addition most productions to not make it onto Broadway without being vetted at small to medium-sized regional theaters so that adjustments and improvements can be made for the audience's benefit. Standard pricing can be stiff, but look for discount services, "rush" tickets, or day-of availability at the theater fro savings. I don't recommend too many of the restaurants in the Broadway area, since they are very touristy. Plan on grabbing a pre or post-show meal at a genuine restaurant that New Yorkers actually visit! read more

Gigi at the Neil Simon Theatre was an enjoyable show, and Vanessa Hudgens and other cast members were energetic and inspiring. We got rush tickets on the third row for $35 each by showing up a couple hours before the show. I think you can get standing room only tickets for even less if you don't mind standing in back. I'm a very big fan of acting and live performances, and always enjoyed Broadway! Recently saw the Phantom of the Opera and it was spectacular, as always. The only down side - its very hard to find tickets by a fair price with a good seat, not the first row, but decent, so that you can actually see whats going on. But that's all details. The shows and theaters in New York - Broadway in particular have gotten to be fantastic again over the past decade. Of course, it all depends on the show, but most of them are engaging and highly entertaining. The theaters are beautiful, some of them are really old and have beautiful ceilings and walls (paintings and chandeliers - it's pretty cool to see those kind of things once in a while). It's disappointing that it's gotten so expensive, but I suppose part of that has to do with the ever-changing technology(?) - someone correct me if i'm mistaken. In any case, Still worth it to go every once in a while and indulge in the thrill of live performance - there is truly nothing like it. Each time I gain more and more appreciation for how difficult it must be to remember all those lines (and music in some cases), and perform 6 + times a week and still make it entertaining for the audience - and yourself! The seats in some theaters are also pretty close together, so if you have long legs, it's (I imagine) pretty painful and annoying to sit for that long in such a cramped space. Hopefully they'll change that someday and think about the audience more than how many people they can fit in the room at once to make the most money. Anyway, something everyone should see at least once in their lives. read more

Be careful but usually a safe and fun place to hang. Quite a few police around though and lots of people but very convenient and walking distance to several subway stations and bus stops. Lots and lots of restaurants and shops and usually very friendly people although some can be a bit impatient or rushed but it's the city. read more

Despite the crowds, what an exciting areas. With all the huge billboards, tourist stores, restaurants and the finest theater in the world.

Walking down Broadway is a must-do when visiting New York. I, personally, love the hustle and bustle feel and how many people are constantly on this street. The performers and entertainers are also really fun. Definitely take a stroll down Broadway! read more
