Briarfield isn't awful, but it's not great either. If I had to describe them in one word it would…read morehave to be neglect. My father spent a good chunk of the last year there for rehab, & I'm not sure that it did him any favors. The facility itself is sort of run down, not dirty, but in serious need of TLC. Most of the equipment & rooms look like a time-warp, moreover, nothing has been updated since the 80s or 70s, likely whenever this joint was built. At least in the rehab wing they updated to more modern TVs, but in the long-term wing they still have standard box TVs, again from to 80's or 70's. This place doesn't even have central air, & all of the window AC units I had seen had mold growing on them. That can't be healthy. One of the biggest issues is the staff. Over on the long-term side you are looking at the worst of the worst. Don't stick your loved ones in there unless you have an axe to grind with them. Often they do just the bare minimum, you know, whatever the law requires even if their patients required more than that. I can't tell you how often I would catch staff just hanging out in the nursing office or out back smoking. Most of them also act like you are bothering them if you try to ask questions, & more often than not they have no clue what's going on with any of the other disciplines within the facility. There are some really good aids & nurses, but they aren't the norm. At one point my father was allowed to go 48 hours without hardly eating or drinking anything when he came down with pneumonia, & given that he was in an altered mental state at the time he couldn't advocate for himself. He also contracted Sepsis while in their care, which eventually killed him. Specifically, he was infected with a bacteria that can commonly be found in fecal matter. There's a lot of bureaucracy going on here too. Every discipline seems to have their own agenda & will commonly feud with each other. For instance, the Physical Rehab team would recommend one thing, & then the Wound Care team would tell them no. They just couldn't put their heads to together to come up with a comprehensive plan that was good for my father. They wouldn't even take him down to their gym once he contracted Sepsis. Worst part is that the administrator didn't have the slightest clue what was going on with her staff 90% of the time. I think she's a good person, moreover, she was instrumental in helping us win a insurance appeal, but I think she's in over her head with this outfit. It's funny, because when we finally moved him to a better facility these problems went away overnight - Austinwoods. Heck, Austinwoods had him standing & transferring within a week. They also routinely took my father down to their gym. Wish we had moved him sooner. Briarfield staff told us he was never going to walk again & didn't have the potential to do prior to moving him. Also, staff will schedule your loved ones for appointments without consulting you, often outside of your availability. They also get upset when you tell them to reschedule said appointments, even though they were aware of your availability to begin with. The biggest issue I believe is the overall Briarfield company. It would seem that their only focus is on making money, which comes at the expense of everything else. The first thing I noticed was that they seem to have a turnover issue, moreover, there are always new faces. If you ask the staff they will tell you that they don't get treated very well. So, you can't retain good or quality staff if you don't pay well or treat them well. They also had to hide supplies, moreover, the facility just wouldn't pay for what staff needed. The other thing that I noticed was that staff started to act funny as soon as my father's insurance stopped paying for his care & we had to start paying out of pocket for rehab. All the sudden they started to dial back services, when up to that point they had been more than happy to provide whatever therapy they could. Their excuse was that my father wasn't getting better, but my running theory is that they were getting less money from us than from the insurance company. TL,DR: Do not ever put your folks in the long-term care side of this facility - gross. Do not place your loved ones in the rehab wing if they have anything even remotely complicated going on. Also, the fiscal ambitions of this company can interfere with care.

I have nothing positive to say about the oppressive corporate leadership, and in areas involving my health care, religious freedom, and personal money, I've filed numerous complaints, asking for State-required Grievance Committee procedures, but never receiving any feedback or resolution of problems that didn't need to be covered-up or denied, as was the case. I witnessed the poor care received by other residents and was only reprimanded for voicing by complaints to the staff involved in it. It is sad and unfortunate that Shepherd's ratings have declined over the years, when it is so well funded by well-meaning donors.
