I was invited by Broadway San Diego and Yelp Elite Squad to see MJ the musical for free! I was so happy I received tickets to go because I love MJ and this was going to be my first broadway musical ever. There are plenty of seats and I was seated on the side of the orchestra towards the back. I had no view disruptions whatsoever. The bathroom was large and spacious and there were plenty of food/drink stations. There were also plenty of security and staff around so finding what you need and feeling safe was easy. I was blown away by the performance and I definitely want to come back to see other shows.. It was truly an amazing night. WWOOOWWW! WHAT A NIGHT ! Been here twice for Broadway shows and both times have been absolutely phenomenal. I've seen Hamilton and MJ the Musical. I loved everything about Hamilton, the energy, the music, all of it was sooo good. Will forever be my favorite. But Michael Jackson completely blew me away. I'm seriously considering coming back this week to watch it again that's how good it was. The cast absolutely killed it ! Every song was a hit, the production was so well done and the way they brought his story to life !! my gosh, I'm impressed. I felt like I was one with the production and literally in his story. The dancing was off the chain. LOVEEE ! I've sat in both upper level and orchestra seats and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. If you can get orchestra level, DO IT! It feels way more up close and personal. Seats are a little tight but not uncomfortable. 10000/10 experience. Lines to get in move super fast. Parking at Wells Fargo lot is $15 day of and $10 online the day before and it's a super short walk. Also from what I've seen, you can bring in a decent sized purse just an FYI. read more

Broadway San Diego is basically where me and the wifey go to catch feelings... from plays We've been to a few shows here and somehow I leave more emotional every time. One word... EPIC. I was very impressed. This was way better than Las Vegas show The One, as there was actual Michael Jackson's dance moves involved and dancing not only that it's a story about his life. There wasn't any acrobatics BS like in Vegas years ago. They danced to and sang all the songs that were favorite #1 hits including 2 Bad, Beat It, Billie Jeans, and Thriller. The audiences all got excited and cheered on the whole entire show and everyone got up and applauded it was a spectacular show and OMG Jordan M. looked and moved like Michael Jackson! There were also live singing and bands playing. Everyone did a fantastic job! The show is called MJ Musical at Broadway San Diego. Get the tickets now while they are still touring in San Diego this is the closest thing that you will experience to Michael Jackson's concert if you missed out!!! read more

Attended MJ The Musical Yelp Elite Event sponsored generously by Broadway San Diego. We had great Orchestra seats near center. The show took place during the 1992 rehearsals for the Dangerous tour. It encompassed his rise up to stardom from a child with a very good child actor, a young adult Michael and an adult Michael. It did not shy away from the tough treatment from his father. Really good performances and the dancing was crazy. I've never been to a Michael Jackson concert when younger and this is the closest I'll ever get. Great Show! read more

I had tickets to see The Notebook. Wow! first the performance was amazing. The cast amazing the show worthy of everyone's attention. The inside of this venue is gorgeous and the seating is what you would expect of a historic building that takes you in and gives you the full experience. The outside of the building getting into the venue is very uncomfortable. The number of people I had to walk past openly using drugs on the street urinating openly - the smell of urine getting into the venue was absolutely Horrendous . Now leaving the building the sidewalks had been washed down and another patron said oh they do that so it's clean for those leaving the theater - that would've been great going into the theater as well. To pay what we do, It's a little disheartening that this is what we have to experience just for the opportunity to see world-class theater read more

Prepaid for parking and it turned out I couldn't use it because the entrance for the parking structure was blocked for the marathon. No big deal, I parked somewhere else. With the many events that are going on here in San Diego one of the best that was going at the Balboa Park the largest Christmas Celebration the many people you can see at the event. On Saturday I had attended the celebration the many people the one group that caught my eye was the Broadway San Diego one of thd Greatest Groups that helps with the many shows and performances . Seeing the many people they had and welcomed at the tent they have they were giving free show posters from the past shows from George Hamilton to River Dance . The Civic theater has been one of the many theaters that have hosted the Broadway Shows one of the greatest shows the Lion King that reached so many here in San Diego.. Broadway San Diego they are the best for the many shows they have created for the city and the customer service they have meeting the group one of the most Incredible group of people with such great spirit the way they welcomed so many . People they welcomed with many new shows to introduce the new shows and the openings Broadway San Diego has such great magic to arrange some of the many great shows . As always what a wonderful venue. Saw Aladdin and it was phenomenal. Our seats in the orchestra were perfect. I have tried seats in the balcony before and they are waaay too far away and rather steep. If you are terrified of heights do not buy balcony seats. They have an assortments of drinks and snacks to choose from. Heavily priced and not cheap, but if you have the munchies and cannot wait until after the show this will tied you over. read more

The play was probably great but they sell green n white Wicked popcorn wrapped in plastic meaning during the second act, if you do not have geriatric ears, you cannot hear the play all. Third strike. Aside from the limitation of the theater itself, the productions and the technology (audio and visual) are AWFUL. Peter Pan yesterday was the most lame production. Peter could not sing/dance, the production made "current" was absurd (and took out most of the charm of the story), the choreography could have been done in a high school or active senior living population complete with pipped in tap music for the non-dancers, and the gaying up of pirates just did not work on so many levels. Did I mention the audio? DID I MENTION THE AUDIO? truly abysmal with pretty good seats ($400) PLUS $40 parking this is a MUST PASS next time. Good luck with this model. And I am a huge supporting of true arts. But seriously get some talent who are actually trained to sing and dance AND have actually performed before. Never Never Land indeed. read more

" Anastasia Play Was Awesome " My wife and I went to see the Anastasia Play at the Civic Theater and was blown away. We have seen hundreds of plays at the Civic Theater but this true story about a little girl in Russia was really interesting and AWESOME ! I have never seen such Fantastic Video effects and film in the background of the play before. Simply Great ! They story was easy to follow and was very interesting and the music was very nice. Last month my lady and I had the opportunity to visit Broadway San Diego and see the last performance (there) of "Wicked". It was a pleasant experience and helped me score extra points with my partner who was dying to see the show. Our ticket taker and the ushers who supported / guided us were friendly, helpful and responsive. I was also impressed by how comfortable our seats were ..... including more than average leg room. The theater was laid-out well and seemed to provide reasonably good viewing of the stage regardless of your seat. The performance was fantastic .... at least in our opinion and, the audience seemed to agree based on applause level & length, backed up via the number standing ovations. We will likely return to this venue to see another show. read more

The people behind us were talking extremely loudly the entire time and one of them turned on their cellphone flashlight not once but three times. The show circuit and theater itself is 4.0 The staff about 3.0 but the crowds and attendees are about 1.0 I've attended 3 shows this year; 5 last year and 5 the year before - and I must say it is getting worse and worse. Saturday evening - i went to see waitress. During the 3rd song - no less than 20 people (all at once) were lead to their seats (folks - thats 20 minutes into the show). They were all in rows J, K, M, N (on the odd side). Now i realize these seats are likely the donors, etc. but WTF - the show is 1/2 through the first act. There is a rule, no late seating - adhere to it. It took the 20 or so folks the entire song to get adjusted - meaning i missed it. Same show - the guy with party of 4 talked the entire show... "Ok, now she is going to come out with...." it went on the whole show - his running commentary about the latest gossip about each performer. I gave him the stink eye but he never shut up. Same show -- same guy that has been in the same seats all season - hands his phone to the 10-11 year old next to him and the child plays candy crush the whole performance. Not only with the lights on the phone, but the episodic noises. I don't know how the attendants don't see or do something about this. I mentioned to the attendant - but she shrugged her shoulders and said it would be hard to pin point who it is. Lady - it is a dark theater --- see that glowing light on the row N, seat 53...yep that's it. This is my last year as season ticket holder - it just a waste of money now because i never get to see the whole show or hear it --- because of all the noise, bright lights (killing the night vision adjustment) and poor policing of late arrivals. Really not being run professionally or with pride and respect for the performances or the ticket subscribers. read more

I love that we have a place for Broadway tours to perform, and I love that there's a good mix of different kinds of shows coming through. It's nice knowing you don't have to travel to New York (not that that's a hardship for me) to see the more popular musicals and shows out there. The decor of the Civic Theater can be deemed either dated or classic. I like to think of it as classic, because I'm emotional like that. There's a lot of deep red, velvety textures, and some art-deco-looking sconces and wall art. Personally, I think it works well together, so I can't complain. The seating within the theater is comfortable for the amount of time that you'll be in there, and I honestly haven't been in a bad seat, in all the times we've been there. Sure, I prefer to be as close as possible, but sometimes that just can't happen. So, it's nice to know that if I'm in Mezzanine level, or in one of the side boxes, I won't have an issue seeing the stage. However, though the view is good from everywhere, the sound isn't always consistent. We were in the side boxes for "Book of Mormon", and the balance of the sound was just off. However, we were Orchestra, second row for "Once" and had no problems. It definitely could be the production itself, but I have no way of verifying that, and I kind of feel like the theater should take care of sound prior to a show's opening. But that's just me. Also, the bathrooms, though clean, are a little jankety. There are a few stalls, in several of the bathrooms, that have a gap so large between the door and the wall that you can clearly see out (and in!) while sitting on the toilet. Not the most comfortable of situations to be in. My final gripe has to do with crowd control. If they're going to tell you to line up at a certain point in order to get access to the stage prior to the show, they should manage the queue, to ensure that the people who were lined up for 30 minutes (like us) aren't pushed out of the way by the people who came storming up to the doors two minutes before they opened. read more

Yay for being season ticket holders! Looking forward to a great year with Book of Mormon as the highlight. A good start so far with Priscilla: Queen of the Desert and Evita... we bought 6 shows for $180pp (cheapest seats and Sunday night time). + Sunday night shows mean a less packed theater, free street parking, and can easily take advantage of restaurant happy hours before the show + Staff handles the lines well- takes us less than 10 minutes from entering the Civic Center to getting seated + The theater doesn't jam too bad when everyone's exiting. I've been at far worse, so only a few minutes down 4 flights of stairs isn't bad at all. - I didn't know they continue to sell season tickets throughout the year. I wasn't too interested in watching Priscilla initially, so had I known, I would have just waited to buy season tickets after the Priscilla show. No additional discounts for buying season tickets early, so our tickets would just have been 5 shows for $150pp. - Also, you can get pretty good discounts on individual shows the week of through Travelzoo. I've seen discounted tickets for every single show in the season so far. read more

The venue is great for being built in 1965. No where is a bad seat. We've seen Lion King, Wicked, Into the Heights, West Side Story, Lord of the Dance, and a few other shows from large to small productions and the space is utilized to it's fullest. Plenty of bathrooms and great food choices with cheese and cracker plates. This review is for the ticket vouchers we received as a gift. I went to the ticket office the day before to exchange for our show tickets. After fees and charges the total was under our voucher value so I got a whopping $1 back as changed. The next day we went to the concession stand to use our concession vouchers and no change was given. They do not issue change so you must spend the entire amount or pay the rest out of pocket. Even though it's printed on the ticket, we, like many others, overlooked it (so I admit, it's my fault for not reading). We bought items for $15.50 and I gave two $10 voucher. She (Tamaika) looked at me and said "Okay, thank you. You're done." I'm like, "where's my change/credit? She responded, "Sorry, no change. They should have told you when they sold it to you". I'm like, okay, I got it as a gift, Fine, let me order another drink. Then she said, "sorry I already closed the transaction". Really, lady? I would have appreciated a courtesy heads up. So either the venue is trying to make money when clearly they already making money or this lady has no heart and just takes your money. She should have said, "Oh, there's no change given at the end, you have $ left if you want to purchase something else or pay the $5.50 out of pocket". Instead, she saw how pissed I was and offered a $3 cookie. Really, I already bought 2! It's about the principle! So disappointed and I hope she handled my rage differently and informed other customers after us. read more

I purchased tickets to the MST3K The Great Cheesy Movie Circus Tour in January of next year through Ticketmaster and chose the VIP ticket selection. Seeing as the tickets were labeled VIP, and the other venues around the country were offering VIP experiences (including special merchandise, meet and greets, etc...), I thought it might have included something to the same VIP tune as the other theaters. Curious as I am, I reached out to Ticketmaster and asked them what exactly was included in the VIP experience they were selling. Someone got back with me and said it was only labeled VIP because they were "premium" seats. Huh. Clearly they must have made an error. I mean, they are ultimately losing out on potential revenue and for a business, that can't be good, right? Because I know the contact at Alternaversal, the production company behind the live show, I reached out to them and after some research on their end, they told me the VIP packages were not being offered in San Diego. They told me, specifically, "San Diego is one of the Nederlander markets and as such they chose not to participate in the "VIPs". However, they label their top price best seats in the house as premium/VIP seats, even though they don't come with anything extra." I decided to reach out to Nederlander, who put me in contact with the presenter, Broadway San Diego. I emailed them multiple times and never received a response. I then reached out to Balboa Theater, the venue, directly and spoke with someone there that said "That while we can not make any promises regarding the show, we will be happy to pass your concerns along to Broadway San Diego, the presenter of this event in San Diego." They also asked me to send my ticket info to them to pass along. I also forwarded my ticket info directly to them per Balboa Theater's instructions. Today, I heard back from the Area Manager Bryan Keneally, who responded curtly "We are sorry for the delay in response to your e-mail, but packages vary and this is what's available in San Diego." No explanation, no apology that it took them WEEKS to respond to me. Everyone outside of Broadway San Diego was quick to respond, not to mention very nice. I HIGHLY recommend NOT attending any shows that Broadway San Diego presents as their management is less than professional, not to mention their customer service stinks! Quite a disappointing experience all-around. I know I won't be attending any of their upcoming shows and might just sell my tickets to someone for this one and purchase them at another venue that is happy to take my money for not just a ticket but a VIP experience as well. read more

This is my first season subscribing to Broadway SD and there are definite pluses and minuses: +teacher discount +great customer service. When it turned out that the I didn't have tickets to The Color Purple was because I hadn't actually bought them, I got a pair of free ones +parking, though it isn't free, is easy +variety of plays. If I had kids, I'd like that they were family friendly, but I don't have kids. -Poor economy seems to mean that there are a number of "yahoos" (husband's word, not mine) in the audience. Exhibit A: these 2 women moved to some empty seats near husband and me because one person had brought their dog, and the couple in front of the women were kissing the entire time. Exhibit B: drunk woman in front of me was talking the entire first half of the last play. -Really bad Next to Normal casting of Alice Ripley. Her voice is going, going, gone by the end of Act 1 and this made for a painful Act 2. Awful awful. -Family friendly means plays like Shrek instead of something I might enjoy seeing live. I LOVE, love, love Broadway San Diego. After years of attending events there, I am still delighted each and every time. The staff, volunteers, ticket-purchasing and sales team are all great. The concessions people move the lines amazingly fast during intermission, and I've never missed the curtain. The season ticket packages are fabulous and affordable, even for my family on a budget, which makes theater accessible for the kids too. Only one complaint: the vendors selling show swag at the close of each show are really slow and disorganized. The lines are all sketchy and scattered, then you get the people who spend 15 minutes debating between a magnet, a t-shirt or that new USB containing the show tunes. Aside from the oblivious rudeness of these buyers, there has got to be a better way to advertise or recap the availability of offerings BEFORE you get to the front of the line! The only other "complaint" is for the facilities: What the heck is wrong with the faucets in every womens restroom, every floor? (Maybe even mens, but I've never been in there.) They literally spray cold water at your midline, not your hands - watch your nice dress, there! It's evident they are faulty by all the water sprayed on the countertops, the mirrors, everywhere. After years of this, I wonder: does anyone listen to customer complaints at the Civic Center? I just have something to say to the person who thought "family show" Shrek took up valuable time on the season playlist: WRONG! I am a long-time season ticket holder for Broadway San Diego and Shrek was one of my all-time favorite any-age productions - seriously. One of the many surprises each season is that I can never predict how the shows are produced, and I have never walked away disappointed. Other past favorites also include Rock of Ages, Wicked, Les Miserables (coming back soon!) and yes, even Beauty and the Beast. Storytelling, costumes, music are all fantastic here, all top of line and never failing to delight! I am so excited for the coming 2012-13 season, which has the best line-up ever. read more
