Wow! The Liberty Station space is BREATHTAKING! So massive, clean, and state of the art. Everything is new and fancy. Stunning venue and they must have some magic up their sleeve because I couldn't hear the airplanes fly over which is a miracle. Those planes are so freaking loud. The bathrooms are immaculate! I would rather see a show here than the Civic. Parking is easier too than downtown by the Civic. Probably safer as well. You will get more bang for your buck at Cygnet and most likely have a better experience which is all we really want when going to the theater. read more

Went to A Magical Holiday: Christmas at the Joan tonight and can't give it enough stars! It's a high-energy singing and dancing spectacular. If you like the Rockettes or Radio City, then you will LOVE this show. It features fantastic vocalists, beautifully choreographed dances, and live band. The theater itself is brand new and is cozy and beautiful. This show would be great for all ages and features just about every Christmas song you'd hope to hear. I've been watching shows here for the past two decades...always a great time! I much prefer smaller and intimate theaters like this where I am actually see the actors' faces. This is impossible at the Civic Theater or Symphony Hall or Petco Park concerts where you can barely see the faces if at all, unless you're willing to spend $300+ on a ticket, if not $1000+. I recently saw "Rocky Horror Picture Show", a great production! Fantastic cast , sets, and talent. What an embarrassment. Booked this show two weeks ago. Had two young ladies visiting from Japan and we thought they would enjoy seeing Oklahoma. We planned a pleasant evening of dinner and a show. Took time to explain the story behind the musical. Cygnet texted us a reminder that the show was at seven about two hours before we arrived. We were all psyched and ready for a great evening. We arrived at the theater an hour early, parked our car and figured we would walk around Old Town for a bit before the show. As we passed the box office there were some very nervous people standing around who looked like they might have been part of the cast. The show was cancelled, they told us. We were stunned. Cancelled? Yes cancelled, they said. They claimed they were calling people to notify them. How bloody unprofessional! They said one of the cast members got sick. What happened to "The show must go on"? I can't tell you how many times I've attended a show to find out that a cast member was replaced by an understudy. Not tonight. Oddly enough it was the last night for the show and the theater company is apparently moving to another venue. They had the nerve to ask if we would just like to donate the $200. plus dollars we spent in lieu of a refund. Are you kidding? This was the worst theater experience I've had in my life. Not a bad seat in the house. This is the kind of theater that is always great to go to and see a play. Their schedule is diverse and interesting. They have plays for every age from musicals to comedies to drama. Before we moved to San Diego 3 years ago, we tried out a production. We loved it so much that joining the Cygnet was the first thing that we did after the move. There is a beautiful patio to sit and have a drink or snack before the show. The staff couldn't be nicer. If you've been in the habit of catching live shows like me, you'll definitely want to keep this in the rotation around San Diego. There is simply no bad seat in the house. It's my way of saying this theater isn't very big. Fortunately, we've been to much much smaller theaters, the smallest one being in San Luis Obispo. We got $25 tickets that actually placed us right by the stage in the front row for the production of The Great Leap. This wasn't my first time here, so it was actually interesting to see how different the set looks from show to show. Parking: They have a private lot. There are also plenty of other options nearby, including street parking and public lots dedicated to Old Town. FYI: - The draft beer is from the booth inside and near the entrance. The lid needs to stay on from the main entrance all the way towards your seat. Once at your seat, drink away! - If all it takes is one person to convince you to no longer become a season ticket holder, your business and money is likely no longer appreciated. read more

1st time attending and all of the Yelp reviews were right. There is not a bad seat in the house. I went with the 2nd tier priced seats and they were great. If you decide you want to have a yearly membership, they will apply the price of your tickets towards the membership. Snacks and drinks are available if you want to buy them, both inside and outside the playhouse. There is a restroom inside and there is a private parking lot and that makes it easy. Will call is open about 30 minutes before the play starts and they open the lobby about 20 minutes before the play as well. Shopping is conveniently located steps away from the playhouse. Today at the Cygnet we saw a performance of a live "radio" presentation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It was so much fun! The idea is that the actors are putting on a radio show at Christmas in 1944 and the audience is part of the "live studio audience." Outside the theater were some wonderful people in period clothing, like 1800s, singing Christmas Carols. Really put Signora and I in the Christmas spirit! We paid $45 for each ticket, which was a little much but some of it, I figure, is a contribution to a small theater that must cost a fortune to keep running. The crowd was really into it which made it even more fun. read more

This is a consistently solid theater. Pretty much anything you see will be in the range of good - great. It's a small, intimate venue so even the back row gives a good view of the actors. The seating somewhat wraps around the stage. The retail prices for tickets seem a little steep to me but you can usually get a deal on Goldstar. They're definitely worth it in the $20 - $30 range. Also, they often put on two plays at the same time, with the same cast performing both. I've always found it very interesting to go see both plays within a few days ago so that I can compare performances, casting choices, etc. It's really fun. Finally, if you are able to walk, park at the Old Town transit center and just walk the appx. two blocks. read more

We came here to watch the play Sons of the Prophet on a Friday called something like "Theatre on Tap," where they have free beer on tap and a forum, in which after the play, all the actors come out onstage to answer any questions the audience may have. That being said, we unfortunately didn't get to participate in said forum because it ended up getting cancelled last minute that night. Something about not having anyone to lead it...? Anyways I was bummed about that so minus one star :/ I really would've loved to participate because the theatre inside is very small and intimate. We sat in the third row at the center and were as close to the actors as if we sat in the first row. It wasn't an intimidating or austere atmosphere and I loved that about this theatre! The play we watched was amazing, and the actors frequently used the theatre's smallness to their advantage, running up and down the spots in between the seats. It really made all the difference in getting the audience engaged in the play. I actually really did like this theatre and look forward to attending another play where I can hopefully be involved in the forum! read more

This was my second time attending a show at the Cygnet Theatre and I was impressed yet again. I saw the Rocky Horror Live Show and it was great. The cast was talented (the singing and dancing was great and I didn't mind watching Danny Hansen play Rocky nearly naked most of the show), the live band sounded good, the costumes very well done and the lighting and acoustics were good too. Not Broadway or Off-Broadway calibre, but definitely not an amateur performance. Overall, a really enjoyable show, but I would have liked to see a bit more "interaction" and use of props with the audience that you usually expect with Live Rocky Horror Show performances. There were some lights and boas to buy, but not a good "prop kit." You get your "virgin" sticker if its your first time at the show, the criminologist made the virgins stand up at the beginning and encouraged us to participate, but it didn't really go further than that. The theatre is located on one edge of Old Town, really easy to access and they have a private parking lot right next to it. Just show them your ticket. I wish I had known about this last time, cause parking in Old Town can get tricky. The location is great, as you can enjoy Old Town and all its offerings, before the show. The theatre is tiny, which means there is not a bad seat in the house! Also, there's very short waiting times to get in and out, but can mean a little bit of a longer time for the one set of restrooms. Its nicely furnished with comfortable seats. There is a nice large patio outside where you can enjoy drinks and snacks from the concessions stand. They have heaters for chilly nights. Its literally right out the door of the theatre and nice to enjoy during intermission. The staff is super nice. The girl at Will-Call gave me all the pertinent info (including length of the show, when to show up etc) and even recommended places for dinner before. The ushers were really helpful too. The price is a little steep for the calibre of show, and I'm not sure I would pay full price, but they always have tickets available at Goldstar.com or 1/2 off Tix. read more
