I came to see No Other Choice and was very impressed with this small theatre. It seats about 60 people and it is best to purchase your tickets online because this movie sold out. You can't beat their concession prices! Wow, the larger movie chains charge you outrageous prices while Digital Cinema Gym is more aligned to today economy. I get the larger chains have more movie options and theaters but I still think buying a hot dog, soda, popcorn for $30 is ridiculous. I'm glad to have a more reasonable option and will continue to check here first when in the mood for a movie. Parking in downtown is a pain but they offer parking of $5 in their lot when you validate your movie ticket read more

Attended a special film screening: Ask E. Jean on a Thursday night. This event was hosted by FiredUp Foundation. The concessions had a plethora of snacks and bevies. I was happy to see pickles as an option but I just had dinner. Bathrooms were clean and seats were typical. Screen and sound were as expected. The theater was cozy, we sat in the last row. This is a great small theatre venue. It is very convenient considering its Downtown location! There are a good variety of cheap concessions (popcorn for $3.50-$5.50 with real butter). There is $5 parking in the venue's garage (same as the Merian apartment complex) with detailed instructions provided upon ticket purchase. The movie theatre is smaller than most but allows for a comfortable, local experience. Ticket prices are reasonable, and the nonprofit theatre offers unique movies not playing in theatres regularly. read more

Went with 2 friends to watch Hundreds of Beavers. First time here and it was a pleasant experience. It's on the second floor of a building, parking structure is a shared space but only $5 if you're going to see a movie. Everyone we ran into, from the parking security guard to the people behind the concession stand, were all very friendly and helpful. The food is reasonably priced as well. The actual theater is very small, like 60 people, but the picture and sound was great. The movie was sold out on a Tuesday night, but didn't feel cramped while seated. I don't go to small independent films very often, but if I do, I hope it's playing here. read more

Had a wonderful moviegoing experience here. Conveniently located in downtown, close to public transit. The facility is clean. The sound system, seating and screen are excellent. Although I like to the old space, the new space is stunning! Great downtown location. The parking was easy, and it looks like it's close to transit lines/stops. The staff were super friendly, and there is a great combo deal for popcorn, drinks and snacks. Real butter for the popcorn. It's delicious and fresh! The theater itself features incredible sound, with specially designed acoustics. The screen was great, and even though the theater is small, it makes for a more intimate experience. Seeing Neptune Frost on the big screen was very powerful. I know that Media Arts does a lot of good for the community by way of classes and all kinds of other engagement. Independent art house style theatre in North Park. I had the incredible pleasure of seeing "Loving Vincent" here. The space is small but they have stadium style seating so we short girls don't have to stress if a tall person decides to sit ...right in front of us! We were in the 3rd row in the middle which for this Movie was a bit too close due to the nature of the film. Bathrooms are clean. Space is welcoming. There's even a lounge area for your before-or-after movie chat. Parking in North Park can usually be problematic but I was here on a Monday afternoon and didn't have a challenge. read more

Recently moved down to OB and searched for indie movie theaters and found this gem. I like that it is right next to a trolley stop so I would not have to deal with traffic and parking. The theater itself is so clean with very comfortable seats. There were only three of us there to see a Lebanese film...I wish more folks would support venues like this and smaller films. Absolutely nothing bad to say about this place. It's great for watching independent movies or anything they want to show. My girlfriend and I came here for a 10:30am showing of a movie, and we were 2 of 4 people in the theater at the time. From the outside looking in, it can be tough to imagine a theater being here. You see the name of the place (Digital Gym), and you wonder if this is some sort of actual gym, and you realize that it's a theater. Once you walk inside, there are tables for lounging and internet use. There's a "reception" desk that is separate from the box offiice/concessions area. There is also some merchandise on display for purchase. You can buy certain pieces of art and collectables that are unique and interesting. We saw some sci-fi and lucha libre stuff. The theater itself is fairly small, as I was able to show my silhouette on the screen on the way to my seat. But that's not a factor in my experience here. There were maybe 6-7 rows of about 10 seats per row. I don't know the exact capacity, but it was definitely no triple-digit capacity theater. It possibly calls for a more intimate setting. And yes, there are cupholders by each seat. That's not always guaranteed, afterall. (ahem....Balboa Theater....) I know that at least one point, the San Diego Asian Film Festival featured a movie at this theater. They tend to be involved with local events that promote the enhancement of ethnic make-up and cultural diversity of cinematic representation in significant lead roles in film, whether it be Latino, Asian, etc. Since they are independent, I recommend supporting them in any way possible. Another benefit of being independent is that they are better able to connect with customers and clientele without having to implement strict policies and rules. The feeling and vibe that comes with it is very good. I basically have the urge to drop anything to do with AMC or Edwards/Regal. See you again, Digital Gym. I love this theater! The selection of foreign and independent films is amazing. I've been here a handful of times now and each film I've seen so far has blown my mind. This place is never too crowded, so it has a great intimate vibe! Do yourself a favor and catch a film here and it will really open up your palate to artistic films. Small cute local theatre off El Cajon in North Park It's a small theatre with one theatre but the seats are stadium style seating. There are a few seats that gets the air blown on them directly, and it gets super cold and uncomfortable if you're unfortunate enough to sit there. the weird air system is why I'm only giving it four stars. But everything else about this place is great! Also one of the few theatres that continue to take moviepass and have the e check in option. read more

Went last Friday to watch a movie from Spain at the Digital Gym, but arrived too late and it was sold out. So nothing to comment yet about my experience with Digital Gym itself, but I think the gift shop deserves its own space. It is a great gift shop for cinema lovers, all things indie and nerdy and overall cool stuff. I had a good time checking the art on sale plus all the funny objects they are selling at cheap to moderate prices. I would say that most of the things are more attractive to a male audience, so this can be the place for me to get that special gift for that difficult to please friend. read more

Visited this place for the first time today. It doesn't look like a theatre on the outside and it definitely doesn't look like a theatre in the inside lobby. I came in at 7:35pm and the movie started at 7:40pm. No one was at the concessions desk, so I was totally clueless on how this place even works. After a minute or two (which is 10 minutes in confused-customer time), a random girl popped out of the single theatre room to help me. To my surprise, this theatre does all its business on an iPad. Of course, the iPad decides to get stuck as I am about to hand over my MoviePass card to pay, so the girl tells me to just pay after the movie because it's about to start. It's kind of cool that the movie starts right at the listed showtime, although I wish I knew that beforehand to arrive earlier. After the movie, I return to the girl to pay. She then informs me that they don't accept MoviePass even though they're listed on the app. I don't really understand this, as MoviePass is literally a just a MasterCard. You can buy McDonald's with if you wanted to. Anyways, low rating because this girl really conned me into waiting til after the movie to pay so that I wouldn't be able to back out of my purchase. I would've never spent the $11 if I knew beforehand. Pros: comfy seats, inexpensive snacks, friendly staff, neat environment, unique film options, movies start RIGHT on time Cons: doesn't accept MoviePass even though it's a MoviePass authorized location, seemingly only one staff member present, transactions are done on a glitchy ipad, the door to the theatre room is distracting as it's in the front of the room, room is so small that if you stand up you'll block the projection, ticket prices are comparable to superior theaters whilst being worth half, no previews, sound and image are average, no classic ticket stub momento read more

This is for the movie Claire's Camera. SHAME ON YOU DIGITAL GYM FOR FALLING FOR THIS ABSURD SCAM OF A MOVIE! I can appreciate modernism, avante garde work and a minimalist aesthetic. This was simply bad. B- A- D. Worst movie I have EVER seen. Think ' the emperor's new clothes' The critics gave it praise for being comedic. "You won't be the same after you see it". That's right, I know now what a gullible fool I am for listening to critics looking to pull a practical joke on the ignorant. Huppert isn't "sunny!" She looks utterly bored the entire time- distracted and just going through the lines. I'm not sure why she stooped to this level. Maybe they let her keep the wonderful clothes- the Chanel purse might have convinced me to do it too. I had such high hopes for this Korean director with Ms Huppert. At one point she takes a photo with her Polaroid and her fingers cover the entire lens, but her camera work wasn't even the worst. My 8 year old has done better filming with my iPhone. The clunky disjointed zooming in and out of irrelevant background and shots filed with the actors backs to the camera are plain uninteresting. The cuts from scene to scene are just as juvenile, not "sharp". At the end of the movie, the French woman sitting in front of me choked/croaked/snorted in disgust and called loudly for a refund. This hidden gem is great!. This location has excellent and great potential for hosting a multitude of Film Festivals and Discussions and Q&A sessions. Enough space for seating without being too large and without being too intimate. I say it is the right size especially in North Park. Staff was friendly and great and alot of yummy selections and the prices are very fair. One of my absolute favorite places to go in all of San Diego..... this cute little theater in North Park is almost on the corner of 30th Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard this particular place shows movies and has a lot of fun events year-round ..... it is also a school to learn how to make movies and documentaries and the school is for all ages they also have an elementary school that runs on part of the property ..... I highly recommend going here for The Unique movies that they have so many of the main stream movies at the AMC theaters are trashy but this particular place has a lot of quality movies from all over the world so you can see movies from France , from Italy from Canada from Ireland etc etc definitely go check it out, if you haven't already been ....they also have a really nice concession stand area they also sell other t-shirts and movie posters, just park on one of the side streets and there's plenty of really good restaurants all around this really cool theater so you can go eat before or after your movie.... but whatever you do SUPPORT this really COOL UNIQUE UNIQUE THEATRE! read more

Pedro Almodovar was playing here so I had no choice, other than to attend "Dolor y Gloria" (Pain and Glory). I loved his films in the past, "Habla Con Ella", "Tacones Altos"; I don't think there could have been a better place for me to fall in love all over again with the characters that are resounded from previous films. This theater encapsulates emotion; I cried. I think there is a certain way people sound from Spain. Especially in a theater. It was so powerful to be in a room with other people who can appreaciate the same directors as myself... My two favorite lines from the film, "Call me if anything is strange." "Everything here is strange." " Love can move mountains, but it isn't enough to save the one you love." I was reminded of unrequited love, "The First Desire" and growing old. The setting was perfect, the film was true Almodovar style: A surprise ending! And I drank lavender sparkling water. read more

Back when the original Matrix came out, I went with my friend on opening night and watched it in a theater that with the exception of me, was all black people. Every time Morpheus came on the screen it was like he was actually giving high fives to people in the theater because people were standing up and applauding and yelling Get him Morpheus! It wound up being one of the best movie experiences I have ever had because people were so into the movie that it turned it from something just on the screen into a living breathing thing. Tonight, I went and saw the movie Turbo Kid at Digital Gym. And while the theater wasn't the massive sprawling multiplex that it was when I saw the Matrix in Calumet City Illinois, it had that same level of energy. Everyone there loved movies, the people running the joint stood in front and introduced everything and their passion was contagious. The movie hadn't started yet and you could just tell it was going to be a fun experience. And I can't say enough praise for how great that is. This was a movie that literally, no one I know has ever heard of. Yet inside of this place, you would have thought it was the biggest blockbuster movie to come out in the last twenty years. Combine that with the fact that they were literally the only theater anywhere nearby that took a chance on screening Turbo Kid, and I honestly wish I could give them more than 5 stars. For those that haven't been there, it is sort of an unusual place. It looked like there was a nice internet lounge combined with like, a small store selling cool movie stuff like artwork and Pop Vinyl toys, and then a 46 or 48 seat theater. Despite being small, the seats were very comfortable and clean, and the size of the screen didn't detract from the overall experience. Additionally, although I didn't have time to stay they added a free Wes Craven movie after Turbo Kid as a nice send off for the recently departed Craven. Just a really cool/knowledgeable place. Despite the facts that I've been rooting for this place to improve since its inception, and the reality that *they do bring in lots of exciting, diverse fare -- movies you'd have a hard time seeing on the big screen elsewhere in San Diego... *nevertheless* charging full theater prices for this poorly designed hole-in-the-wall, which still bleeds sunlight unto the screen anytime someone opens the side doors, which still has subpar sound and acoustics, and which still employs rude and incompetent help... it's all too much to take anymore. Sorry, I won't be returning, short of hearing from reliable sources that major renovations have taken place. One star for the movies, one star for the comfy seats. Wish you well on making it a better movie-movie experience. It's just not there. Still. Gotta be honest. Good luck. read more

Loved this theatre! Went for the first time yesterday. Nice to have an option besides Hillcrest and the Ken. The theatre is small but the seats are stadium style and comfortable. The staff (of one) was super friendly. They have very few concessions. We got our tix online but there were only about 15 people there for a 4:30 Sat show. The only negative thing was the theatre has a strong smell of a deodorizer like carpet fresh. I'm sensitive to smells so it distracted me during the movie. Definitely not a deal-breaker, and I don't know how much a normal person would be bothered by it. But just know that in advance. read more

Saw Roma (great movie & should be watched on a big screen) here last night. i'm would probably return only if I cant find a movie playing elsewhere, like the documentary shorts before the Academy Awards. The movie started at least 10 minutes late, until then the overhead lights created awful glare and another couple talked loudly, in this small space, bringing forth rude comments from other moviegoers that persisted into the opening scene. Ive see many movies in small spaces, including Sundance, and never an attack like that before. After the room darkened and before film started, an employee came hastily into room, up and down the stars but no communication with audience about delay. Appeared to be disinterest in the theater part of this media center by the staff, and apparently the audience needs supervision! My friend with me, a broadcast engineer thought the sound system not good- at times the actors voices came unintelligibly from various parts of the room. So the seats are comfortable, restrooms clean, street parking challenging, and cant comment on concessions. And I cant even hazard a guess as to what it would be like with a fuller audience if like the others there this time. read more

My 8 year old son loves this camp. Simon is the best he really listens to our concerns and takes action to make things great. Today my son forgot his lunch in the car so I called and explained the situation to them as I was an hour away on business. My son told me on the way home today that Simon went to Subway to order a sandwich for him. My son has learned a lot of movie making digital tech skills here as well. Awesome artistic place, has great summer camps for kids who are interested in cinema. Great staff and will be coming back for sure!
