I have had my 7 year old in swim lessons at McGuane for 3 sessions w/in a few years. The class…read moresizes are very large (up to 25 kids per class) because it is free to Chicago residents. I will rave about how good the lessons are, but since the class is so large, there are many distractions by kids messing around. If your child can focus and wait patiently for their turn, it is awesome! Most of the time they have 2 instructors in the pool at a time, and sometimes 3. They are extremely good at ensuring your child is paid attention to for their safety. Most of the instructors are very good and put a lot of effort into training your child correctly with correct positioning of their body, hands, etc., especially the head instructor (I keep forgetting his name). He is the best!! There is only one person that is horrible and I wish they'd get rid of this person (don't want to mention gender). This instructor just passes the kids down the pool lane. This instructor doesn't put any effort into training the child and correcting them. This person just appears to be there to be paid. Besides that one person, the others are fantastic. They start the beginners in 3 foot water and when they become advanced enough, they put them in the deeper water and work them at a higher level. I hope the head instructor will remain there and I hope he spends more time in the pool (he's not in the pool much, only when there is someone missing).

It was a well-attended event and, I suspect, it created a setting for special memories for a number of attendees. I appreciate the fact that Phillip Jackson and Black Star have sustained and transformed to remain au courant with community needs. I remember when the little ads for mentors would pop up in various local papers. More recently, I have referred several youth for much-needed but unavailable tutoring over the years and those who have actually made it to a session have remained for years. Black Star is making a difference. I watched Phil Jackson today as he both managed the annual event and frequently stopped to greet a male invitee or tell a little girl that she looked nice. He struck me as genuinely aligned with his divine purpose in that moment and that always pleases me. Two recommendations on improving today's event: Comtinue to move into larger facilities as the growing number of patrons justifies this and avoids discomfort and accidents. Also, use the opportunity to reach so many Black males with healthier food. Food can still be tasty but given the health disparities faced collectively by Blacks, an event diet of more veggies and less starches, fried fare and salt will do its part to keep these men around for the precious girls they accompany. Thanks, Black Star, and keep up the good work!
