Note: we visited Brookgreen in October (the off-season), and it was an unseasonably hot day at 85 degrees. My wife and I visited Brookgreen on our honeymoon, and started with the lowcountry zoo. First, I was disappointed that the butterfly house was closed. Then, we went to the "farm" stables at the beginning of the zoo, where everything was empty. There were only some sad-looking, overheated sheep and one steer. I was hoping to see horses and goats, but all the other animals were gone. There were some chickens, but living in rural KY, we see chickens all the time. The aviaries were pretty cool, and we were able to see all of the birds as promised. Marsh birds, owls, eagles, ducks, and hawks. We saw two otters playing in their exhibit, which was delightful. But besides that, we saw no other animals at all. It was VERY HOT and humid, so they were probably hiding if they hadn't been moved off-exhibit. It's worth noting that we also saw NO personnel around the zoo. It's like it was only open for a walking path. By the end of the zoo, which is so small and with such a limited variety of species that I'd hesitate to call it a zoo, I was overheated and we had to leave. Sadly, we did not have time in our trip to return and see any other parts of Brookgreen. But if you have the time, your tickets are good for one week! read more

Came for the Thousand candles. It was very pretty, a lot of amazing statues. I'd love to back during the daytime to actually see all the statues. There's a lot of small walking paths, so if you have a stroller it can be challenging to pass other people. The lights and candles were beautiful. read more

No stars!!! Their claim of social distancing and limiting ticket sales are an absolute joke for the night of 1,000 candles !!! If you are among those that somehow believe that COVID is fake news than by all means by a ticket and be crammed in with a bunch of maskless Patrons! I reached out to the organization expressing my concern as we had to turn around and leave and was told my $60 In ticket sales would be considered a donation...so disappointing and I will never support this business again due to their reckless and careless money grab. We only made the decision to purchase ticket sales due to their promise of limiting ticket sales and promoting social distancing...which was clearly not the case! They stated in their response email we limited our "maximum amount of sales"..which who knows how many that is. read more

Brookgreen Gardens is magnificent. The grounds are well kept and there is just so much to see. Lots of nice walking trails/sidewalks. And all of the statues are remarkable. This is such a gem and we look forward to going back again and again. This is such a nice option for people to enjoy and appreciate nature and wildlife. I would highly recommend visiting. read more

Unfortunately we were only in SC for a short trip so we didn't get to walk the whole property but I would have love too. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance of Brookgreen. This place is amazing. The gardens are lush, even in the off-season. There are indoor galleries in case of rainy days, that are chock full of interesting sculptures and rotating exhibits. The volunteers are incredibly knowledgable and engaging, and seem to be around every corner of this 9000 acre property. The labyrinth is well maintained and a great respite for meditation. And the "cafe walk" with guide Inge is not to be missed. She takes treats and thank god she does because they know her voice and expect them (understatement). The critters are super adorable-especially the otters - their personalities were hysterical. The male and female were big hams and kept us entertained. If you find yourself anywhere near here this place is a great stop. Your ticket is good for a week - and 2 days is perfect to see the entire property at a leisurely pace. read more

A very nice spot to explore in South Carolina, full of history, art and nature. My family took me there when I went to visit and we couldn't walked the whole place in a day. If you go, you may have to come back another time to be able to look at every sculpture. This place is really fun and quiet, you rarely will bump into someone. There are many cool ponds and little living creatures in them. The whole garden is really clean and we'll maintained. I think you have to be a member to enter, or maybe you can ask for day passes, not sure. There is a zoo with really cool animals and stories to tell. For example, they had two alligators and during the storm Matthew they moved all the animals to a safe place, but no the Gators because they didn't know where to put them. So, after the storm the female went missing and they never found her. Now the male misses her mate and it's so sad. He is about 60 years old. It was a very sweet and real life story someone that works there told us. They do a very kind job helping and taking animals that were kept as domestic pets like foxes. Some of them now can live at the zoo because they were injured and even though they are not were they belong they have a good place to be where food and shelter is provided. I would definitely come back and keep exploring this awesome landmark if I am in SC again. read more

This place is amazing! The sculptures are gorgeous and the grounds are huge. With an admission you receive seven (7) days of viewing. There are three refreshment areas which were packed so I am sure were great! The grounds are immaculately manicured and they feature a light festival I think this fall to winter. The grounds are approx 900 acres and were 4 plantations at one time. There is a zoo featuring many birds recovered from the Raptor animal rescue in North Carolina which cannot be released back to the wild. There are four galleries featuring sculptures and arts of all kinds. The Gardens was founded by Huntington and his beloved artistic wife; he being one of the foremost Hispanic scholars of his time.....Don't miss it .....it is truly lovely. read more

Brook green Gardens is huge! Lots of statues to see and places to go. They also have a zoo and a butterfly farm in the same area. I like that the admission is up to 7 days. So you can just enjoy your time and come back to finish other parts that you've missed. No rush at all. They also have tours that help you learn more history about the statues. The tours are more during the morning and afternoon. They also have a labyrinth that you can walk if you would like to do a quick meditation. This is near the swamp area so make sure to be aware of snakes and alligators. I would love to come back here to have a cute and relaxing picnic here. Be sure to check Groupon because sometimes they have really good deals for admission. They also have a nice gift shop at the entrance if you would like to get anything for your garden. read more

Got to see some interesting wildlife like black and grey fox squirrels, alligators, and other at the zoo. Definitely takes more than a day to see everything. This place is incredible! Thank goodness for a six day pass as it is very difficult to see everything in one day. Put your comfortable walking shoes on because you'll be doing a lot of it. There is a little shuttle that can take you around as well. They have a quaint gift shop as well as a very good restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Apparently they also have live concerts there some evenings.there is a zoo, plantation boat tour, a labyrinth in a quiet area by the water and a huge variety of beautiful sculptures all throughout the gardens. This place has gotta be visible from space! Seeing as how it's that time of year and people are undoubtedly wondering, let's talk about Brookgreen's, "Night of a thousand candles." It's actually over 5500 hand-lit candles and thousands upon thousands of Christmas lights. My wife and I make it a point to go here every year for at least one night. It's absolutely magical and worth every cent. Take an appetite with you! There's shrimp and grits and chicken-bog (Google is your friend) in the food tent. Grab a hot hot chocolate and/or apple cider to warm you up for your walk through the lights afterwards. Entertainment can be found everywhere. There are carolers before the ceremonial ( 70,000 lights) tree lighting every night, and misc, bands and musical numbers are scattered throughout the gardens. Having been to the Naples Botanical just last week , I was expecting beautiful Lilly ponds, orchids and maybe azalea? No, no and sparse. If you love sculpture ----- go. If you love flowers ---- spend your $20 at Trader Joe's on two nice bouquets . p.s. The directional signage is almost as non existent as the flowers. read more

Visited Brookgreen Gardens this morning and went to the native animals exhibit. A docent named Mary conducted a tour in which she fed the animals and provided really interesting and helpful information about the animals and the lowcountry generally. Extremely enjoyable. There is a Zoo, a Butterfly house, and a whole garden to explore. Was pleasantly surprised that the admission is a full week pass. We spent more than one afternoon here on vacation. Worth it. Brookgreen Gardens is, very simply put, absolutely amazing. You know in all those period films everyone says things like "will you show me the gardens?" or "I'm going to take a turn around the garden" etc? Remember poor Marianne from Sense and Sensibility? Well, I never got what the allure was to walking around a garden. Big deal. Now? I totally get it. I could have spent hours upon hours roaming around the gardens at Brookgreen. You buy your tickets ($14 each but you get a discount if you are a AAA member!) and you have access to the Gardens and the Zoo for a full week! It's a wonderful deal. Just driving from the entrance point to the welcome center should give you a clue what you are in for. Wonderful sculptures and ponds... trees full of Spanish moss... it's breath taking. The people at the welcome center were incredibly helpful. There is a 9 minute film that's worth checking out before you start out the door. Also, please do not miss the Pavilion Cafe. And PLEASE order the shrimp and grits. They are the best shrimp and grits ever. I will be going back for more. There are endless pathways to all kinds of wonderful sculptures, fountains and foliage. Two of my favorite pieces, Cycle of Life and Evening, are by Manship. (Please see pictures in gallery.) As soon as I walked through part of the garden I felt like walking back through it again but there was so much more to see. We spent several hours there and didn't even see all of it. And this was JUST the garden. We went to the zoo on a different day. The zoo houses animals that are native to the area. There was a field of very chatty goats (they were hilarious), beautiful owls, bald eagles, foxes (one was sleeping in a tree), alligators and more. Two things really stood out to me. The first was the massive bird cage that you walk through. It's this huge area that's been netted/caged off and there is a boardwalk through it. You actually go in and walk through. There are birds all around you, flying past you, eating etc. It was amazing. Just watch where you step! The other super cool thing and my most favorite part was the river otter area. There have a little glass enclosed space so you can see the otters swimming and playing. It was very entertaining. They also have a butterfly exhibit that is open April to October but we didn't have time to check it out. That's ok though because there will definitely be a "next time"! read more

If you are ever in the Myrtle Beach area I highly recommend you plan a visit here. We only spent a couple of hours here, it was a cold windy day. We took the walking tour, our tour guide was wonderful and we were lucky to be in a small group. Sadly I didn't get her name. This is the location of what had been in the early 1700's rice plantations. The grounds are vast and there are sculptors all over place. There are things we didn't get to do on our visit- the zoo and lowlands. There are teams that can shuttle you around to reduce the amount of walking. They have strollers for children and adults. The tix price was $16 per adult and that ticket is good for 7 days. There is a river boat tide and butterfly garden and those cost more- I don't know how much more. read more

This place is a real gem. We had a one week holiday in Myrtle Beach and Brookgreen Gardens was the highlight. The entry fee ($12) entitles you to return visits within a week. We ended up spending 2 half days there. What do they have? 9,000+ acres, of which some 500 are well managed gardens, walkways, ponds, fountains. But most amazing is the remarkable collection of statues & sculptures (over 1200 of them!) located throughout the place. They are elegant, beautiful and of high quality. They also have a zoo and aviary for indigenous fauna. They have a restaurant. They provide river cruises as well. One could easily spend they day there, if it's not too hot! This is a genuine "must do" while in the Myrtle Beach area. read more

I loved this place! I went on a trip to South Carolina with my boyfriend, and this was the place I was most excited to visit. It was so beautiful. This place is SO massive, with amazing flowers and trees and ponds. It was wonderful to walk through. The first pond we saw had fish, frogs, and tadpoles in it. There were many flowers in bloom when we went in spring. The statues were cool to look at. There were also two little art galleries that were fun to look at. Their gift shop had a lot of interesting things, it wasn't cheap but I never expect gift shops at places like these to be anyway. The bird house was SO COOL... although frightening. I have never been to a place where you can get so close to birds like that. I kept wanting to go back in, but my boyfriend was scared, haha. I love that admission was so cheap. Less than 10 dollars, and you get to go back for I believe 4 days after. That was really cool, because we were able to go back on days when we had an extra hour or two with nothing to do. Also despite being during spring break time, it was never too crowded. We did pay to do a pontoon boat ride in the evening. My boyfriend did not want to go at first because he thought it might be boring, but he ended up loving it and so did I! It was very relaxing and the tour guide was interesting. He talked all about the different plants, we saw an alligator laying, a few turtles, some different herons and birds. The tour guide also answered questions and told a few jokes. He was a really likeable guy. All of the employees, by the way, were older. And they all seemed really happy to be working there! I loved that. Everyone smiled and was happy to help. I think my favorite part about this place, however, was the fact that I wrote on a comment card how much I enjoyed my time, and the employees. They sent me a thank you card in the mail and said they were glad we enjoyed our stay! I totally was not expecting that, and it just shows how much they appreciate their customers :) read more

This is one of the best gardens ever, well worth it! They have everything for all ages. A beautiful diverse mix of flowers (with an awesome alley of live oak trees), cool art/sculptures, and a great zoo! There's a lot of history highlighted here regarding the rice plantation and it is very interactive with informational signs and older buildings still left in tact. The highlight is the zoo with a lot of animal exhibits (otters are the best)! You can get very close to the animals in the bird dome and barn. There's a kids exhibit near the zoo with a butterfly garden (closed seasonally) and a lot of interactive themed playgrounds. The garden also has a boat that takes you out on the water where you can sometimes see alligators and they walk through the history in an engaging way. They have a restaurant cafe that's a little pricy but great food. The cost for entry is reasonable for all that you can do ($10-18) and kids under 3 are free. The ticket lasts a week and you could spend multiple days here. read more
