My fiancee and I attempted to go apply for our intent to marriage license. Online, all it said that we needed was our IDs and both of our presences at the Town Hall. I should know. I checked at least once a week for the past two months. So much was my surprise when we entered the entirely empty office and are told that it would take two whole weeks for them to process a single email and to make an appointment to complete the state application for a marriage license. Massachusetts already has a three day waiting period so we'd be SOL. The absolutely unhelpful clerks- all three of them- wouldn't look my fiancee and I in the eye as they turned us down. They couldn't help us, even though when we got there, they were gossiping like mean girls in a COMPLETELY EMPTY office. Mind you, every single town around us has the appointment requirement explicitly listed on their website. The whole experience was awful and the clerks were rude. DO NOT GO HERE.

They've managed to keep it's exterior intact while updating the interior, and it all just looks awesome. The main hall inside is big enough for medium-sized events. They held the first Octoberfest there last fall. Elections are held here, many public services can be found here. It's a great office in a beautiful location with free parking all around.

(see…read moreBoston RMV review) I'm not exactly sure that the Cambridge City Clerk's office is normally a high traffic area, but as I understand it, anything having to do with the city or state requires a minimum 2 hour wait and donation of your non dominant hand's pinky finger. We were there to get a domestic partnership (not a marriage. Lets be clear) because since Health insurance is required now (gripe mumble gripe) well you know. Anyway, since my company is national, they offer health benies to domestic partners. Thus we found ourselves at City Hall. We walked in. No Line... We were helped right away and with a smile..... We filled out the paperwork, raised our right hand, said we were telling the truth, and didn't have to show any documentation whatsoever........ We were in and out in 5 minutes. WHAT?!?!?! Not complaining, just baffled. The clerk also told us that our license/documentation or whatever would be in the mail tomorrow, but we'll see if that happens. So now we are happily partnered in domesticity, I didn't waste my entire day, we both have all our fingers and health insurance in case we do lose one. Sweet. EDIT: Our paperwork did indeed arrive that Saturday, and retains its 5 star rating.

My friends got married here in the past week. This is a city hall that's pretty reminiscent of…read moreother city halls I've been too...generic government center, but the people are really friendly. There's apparently two places you can get married, on floor 2 with marriage certificates and on floor 6 with the city clerk. On floor 2, you get married after waiting outside with those waiting for birth certificates, death certificates, and to pay parking fines, so it's a nice mix of people. We arrived early for our appointment and we were able to go in as a group of 11 people to witness. The woman who married our friends was nice, cordial, and friendly and the room was very simple and functional. All in all, the officiating took about 10 to 15 minutes with photos and everything. Don't forget about the "Married in Boston" backdrop on the 6th floor right as you exit the lifts -- it's cute and chalkboard-y!

I've never reviewed a courthouse before, so five stars?!…read more I came here and attended the case on Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College back in 2018. So I can only speak about the experience here for the bench trial. Security is strict, and you must leave your cellphone with the front desk. After you tell them which courtroom you are going to, you then go through security. It's airport style, and make sure you have your photo ID with you. If I remember it correctly, the bench trial was on the fifth floor. The elevators were pretty fast. The bathrooms were clean. Actually during one of the days, the fire alarm went off so we had to exit through the side staircase. Outside the room, you get a beautiful waterfront view, it's very pretty! I heard such good things about the cafeteria and now I wish I had a chance to try it. That said, Seaport has transformed so much and there are endless options these days! Love it!

The court rooms are bright, pretty, with stenciled wall motifs and domed ceilings and colorful carpeting and light wood. They're not intimidating at all and have an old-school town hall meets grandma's living room feeling. I think the idea is to create a sense of community, the idea of a place where the people's voices are heard. Hard to articulate it better than that. It's literally an architectural embodiment of all the floofy ideals they keep telling us in law school that nobody actually listens to. It fits, of course, that all the judges I've met so far (and that's considerable since one of our field trips was a Q&A panel sponsored by the First Circuit in which a bunch of the circuit's top judges talked to us) are magnanimous, paternal and...sweethearts. I can't believe it. Not intimidating at all. It was very much, "You're welcome to come by and watch a trial in my courtroom any time!" Of course, they're all also scary brilliant and classy and composed and articulate like whoa. My second field trip was a sentencing and I think I witnessed the first experience of my life where I've literally seen someone "be merciful." It was even heartwarming. My friend and I had to hold back tears at the end and, keep in mind, we're LAW STUDENTS. LAW STUDENTS AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE SOULS. Then again, the federal courts are supposed to be the "ivory tower" of the American justice system. But, all in all, my experiences at Moakley have been nothing if not refreshing. When I walk in there I really do feel like this is a house of justice. And Brandeis p0wns. Even the US Marshals manning the metal detectors are adorable. I hope if I'm ever indicted in federal court I get to be a defendant at Moakley! Also, subsidized Sebastian's cafeteria is delicious and this building may very well have the best chunk of waterfront real estate in the entire Boston metropolitan area.

I love the Boston public library system!…read more To provide some context, as a kid I loved going to the library but in the country I grew up, libraries weren't free. And they definitely did not have any non-reading materials that the libraries around here have. Anyway, I was a voracious reader back then but I lost touch along the way. So I'm thankful to the Boston libraries, especially the Brighton branch, for reintroducing libraries and the love of reading to me. The Brighton branch is great! The reason I chose this branch was because it's close to home (I visit once a week is probably an underestimation!). But the librarians are friendly, the space is well maintained and clean, and the timings are great (open on Saturdays, say what?!). There are even comfy chairs throughout the library to sit and read. Apart from traditional books, the library provides DVDs (movies, sitcoms, documentaries, etc.), graphic novels, organizes events, etc. and caters to all age groups. Thank you, Boston, for such a wonderful public resource.
